@gerrit since you are a long term SE guy was there ever a proposal to restrict voting to the following people a) Verify that a voter has an advanced degree in science
or a peer reviewed publication
at least on science sites
i for one do not care for votes from "watchers"
all i care about is votes from peers in the field

2:55 AM
do anyone of any fossils left behind by a proto Vulcan civilization on Tau Cygna V ?
Hint watch Star Trek Picard
oh Hey Gimelist. Welcome aboard

hi
been a while, was busy with life
I'll try to be more active :)

so any thoughts on my question ?

which one? I'm just going through several months of questions lol

any fossils left behind by a proto Vulcan civilization on Tau Cygna V ?

tell Trump we need a mission to go there and find out

so what was the drama I missed? Look at the chat here seems like some interesting stuff was happening

yea it was about this mega watt wave that hits out site repeatedly
the one with no citations

oh shit it's raining! I'll get the clothes back in the house
@gansub what?
@gansub who? the guy who is always being downvoted? is he banned?

@Gimelist Mega Watt wave . i cannot takes names here. you know the rules
By the way on Tau Cygna V rock slides were not unheard of.

@gansub I have no idea what you are talking about

3:09 AM
@Gimelist And I am bound by rules
I can only hint
not take names otherwise i will get banned

oh.
MW.
But that's not new, he was always a bit sketchy. Was there a new story?

no. you know the rules. we require citations for in depth questions or else

oh ffs
anyway, I was supposed to fly to India in a few days but it got cancelled

for the Delhi conference ?

3:12 AM
you know we have had people from Israel live here since i dont know 2000 years at least ?

yea I know there are Jewish communities in India. In Cochin mostly, no?

yes exactly. the oldest synagogue outside of Israel I believe
i think they took a seaward route to come here

I was back to Israel in December for Hannukah, and visit the family and stuff

right well. most of the community is moving back
but the new ones they are not "local"
people like you

bought some books on Hebrew and Jewish history, with some recent studies on how archeological evidence fits with what we know from the scriptures
interesting stuff

3:16 AM
i did not know the sea faring history of your people
but 2000 years ago to travel all that distance by boat ?
not bad

Jews were never good with boats

then land route ? i doubt it
no route from Israel to Kochi
maybe hitch a ride with other nations boats ?

Well, if you consider that after the second temple a lot of people moved to Babylon, then Kochi is not that far away

still too far a route to come by boat

I don't think it's boat. You have to go south, and there wasn't any Jewish presence or boat building in the Red Sea

3:21 AM
that is old
meaning we have had Jewish immigrants for the past 2700 years
going back to King Solomon
that is reallly old

Whether a "King Solomon" existed is still up to debate, by the way

no scientific evidence ?

no
well, there were kings at the time, and there were reasons for kings to exist, but whether a "King Solomon" as described in the bible actually existed is not sure.
The books were written after his alleged time, and there is no reference to King Solomon in any of the neighbouring civilisations

3:36 AM
i dislike the land route idea because the route passes through hostile territory
and hence sea seems more plausible
say do you wear ethnic costumes of your ancestors to work?

no. Even in Israel, not a lot of people wear this stuff. The black suits and funny hats you mean? Only the orthodox Jews wear them.

yea yea exactly. when i asked for permission from my supervisor in the US to wear ethnic costumes to work he denied it
but guess what - Indian women were allowed to wear them. every day
my supervisor said maybe for special occasions you can wear them like Halloween
and i am like Halloween is not special for me

then your supervisor is a jerk

you can say that again

Why do you even need permission to ask?
I'm pretty sure that is reason to file a complaint

3:47 AM
i never heard of people wearing ethnic costumes to work
you would get laughed at

well depends on which work. University?

yes
have you ever seen men wearing ethnic costumes to work ?
women yes men no

Yes, in Australia

4:03 AM
yea that is nice they do wear it. I think ethnic costumes are great because they blend in with the climate
but even in my country i would get odd eyes staring at me if i wore one to work
in this heat wearing a coat suit and tie UGH

I never wear a suit and tie

how about for conferences?

Several months ago I went to a conference in this really posh place in London. I was the only one in the room with jeans and t-shirt

yea you are kind of a rebel

guess what - nothing happened. I still gave my talk, and people were happy with it, and then after the talk I made connections with people who did have a suit and tie and it was just fine

4:06 AM
formality has to given into informality i think in the sartorial sense

However, this may be privilege resulting from me being a white male and it may not apply to every one

but that is surprising - Australia allows men to wear ethnic costumes in a University wow
never heard of it

@gansub It's not that they allow. No one forbids you from wearing anything
may be your colleagues will look at you weirdly, but no one can tell you to not wear it
ok I finished going all the way back to December and answering what I could

yea nothing much to say. it is all about this mega watt wave
and it keeps breaking on our shores
moderators trying to enforce citation rules on somebody who has never been through a scientific degree
By the way did you read this question i asked gerrit
since you are a long term SE guy was there ever a proposal to restrict voting to the following people a) Verify that a voter has an advanced degree in science
or a peer reviewed publication
at least on science sites
i for one do not care for votes from "watchers"
all i care about is votes from peers in the field
this means that SE would have to verify my Univ degree before allowing me to vote

4:26 AM
Let's not do that. This will discourage people from participating, and some of us want anonymity.

the verification will be anonymous
ok we can tweak the proposal. the people with scientific backgrounds's votes should be 10 or 100 times more than those with not

I still disagree

then let us allow for the mega watt wave to grow and grow.. it will be really useful for us to learn from mega watt waves
i think i shd change my SE email id. From gmail to my univ email id

1 hour later…
5:46 AM
i think i will ask this question on meta

4 hours later…
9:44 AM
@gansub I don't think there was ever such a proposal.

10:09 AM
@gerrit you yourself have mentioned in this in the past
you only care for votes from peers not from anonymous people
do you want me to look that quote of yours ?

I may have mentioned it, but it's not a proposal unless posted on meta tagged :)

@uhoh I am very glad Hammen answered that question. Originally was too broad. I once told my psychiatrist I participate at a forum where a NASA worcker writes and she wrote in my medical expedient "He says he has maden an application that conects with NASA" lol XD I hate psychiatrists
If I didn't need a pill they give me I will even visit them
They have filled my medical expedient with trash as Walsby does in this forum

12:03 PM
@Universal_learner Ha! I like your sense of humor :-)
I know it's an important relationship but I guess you have to sort-of ignore what they write if possible. As long as you can get them to do wha's necessary.
DavidHammen's answers are usually a pleasure to read, and I think it's great (but not surprising) that you found some problems with the Wikipedia article.

1:03 PM
Hammen hates wikipedia (for science purposes). I can corroborate geology articles are poor. I didn't take many info from the wiki when writing my mineral guide app

1:33 PM
If you read the quote and Hammen's answer, it is not totally false what is said, but it is sometimes uncorrect. Fossils are just prefered, but sometimes the limits are defined by events
I learned....I had not good stratigraphy teachers unless at last course, when a good professor explained us basins and trangresssion/regression cycles

1:52 PM
Wikipedia is sometimes wrong, but it's up to anyone to improve it.
When I come upon something I know is wrong, I don't complain, I click 'edit' and I correct it.
David should use his answer here to correct the wrong article instead of ranting. :)

One teacher told me I could quote wikipedia as a student of a degree, but the article should be referenced. Sometimes you find well sourced articles.
I think History and so articles are better than geology ones. Maybe because geology is a rare science compared to biology or chemistry
