2:15 AM
Since this seems to be the channel for idle games / cookie clickers and the like... I started playing Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms. They had a limited-time offer where you get $100 worth of bonuses for free (to which I say, who would spend $100 on that?)
It's not bad I guess. Scratches the "get achievements" itch without needing a lot of input.
I'm currently doing a run where only one specific character, and anyone they affect with their buff, can do damage. Except their buff doesn't unlock for ages. So I've been adding other characters that can buff them, making my single damage-dealer hit harder.

@Adeptus well......
you have the MLP game when they try to sell you a single character for 50$....

wow

Single trains in Train Simulator on the PS also cost in the 30$ range...

@trogdor I fear I exhausted my life quota of visual interface screw with Rayman.
That is, assuming we are talking about the same level of visual noise for no reason.
(I don't know the game you were talking about specifically)

so that was all unedited how that game works?
anyway, it's not like that with Return of the Obra Dinn
it's more of a ,... I guess sort of a style thing more than anything else
they don't like, change your perspective like that crazy thing you just linked, it's more that it's constantly looking like it looks in that trailer and it's visually confusing and apparently for some people also nauseating to some degree
nothing even moves actually, while you are looking at it
you hear people talking in every vignette before you see anything, and then when you do see something it's usually the freeze frame of when someone died
you use clues like who was speaking and around and what they said, plus what you see, and other stuff like that to figure out who it is in the scene who died, how they died, and what their name is (actually often you find what their name is entirely somewhere other than their death scene, but sometimes someone will yell like "oh no not Insert person's name here XD)

@trogdor that is unedited, yes, and that is from a "bonus" level from the game.
Basically, every world has a final level where you have to run all the time.

but anyway, if you even just watch that trailer you can probably see what the issue might be, the borders are,... a little blurry and the general way things look, plus your own movement, can be a little disorienting
@SPArcheon aaah ok so that's like, a super harder level for bonus points and stuff

For each of that levels, there is an "8 bit version" as the game calls them... and they are like that
@trogdor nope, a regular level that you already played with interface hell plastered on it.

the 8 bit stuff in that was pretty bad honestly xD
@SPArcheon oooh ok

10:05 AM
Nothing new to see, nothing new to unlock. Just UI annoyance for the sake of it

huh
just literally bragging rights for beating it then I guess

Rayman bonus content has an history for being quite... lame I should say.

I've never played a single Rayman game

let's just say that more often than not the 100% completion bonuses are quite not-worth-it or just nowhere to be found.
Biggest offender being Rayman 2.
Which was build so that you would think that you could at best get 99.9%

well that's kinda dumb XD

10:13 AM
@trogdor the game had 1000 lums you could collect. In a cutscene near the start of the game the big bad eats one.
you are left with 999.
so... 99.9%
yet, in a level, disguised by an optical illusion that requires a leap of faith in a pool of lava to be found, a little passage took you to an hidden room with another, uncounted for, lum
lum 51 out of 50 in that level
that one made the percentage go up to 100%
and for it you got... nothing
the game didn't acknowledge it in any way.
@trogdor well, it kinda looks like a... virtual boy game.
And that is not a good sign.

well it's like
it's meant to kinda look retro

So, I can understand why it would be a trigger for some.

but they also did kinda weird things with the borders on people and objects

that said, I am more annoyed by the fact that it had "Dinn" in the name and it is not about "Djinn"

I really actually liked Return of the Obra Dinn, it's a really cool mystery type game where you figure out what happened to all the people on the ship in a pretty unique way
however I can also completely understand not liking their choice of visual art style and such
it's not going to be for everyone for sure

10:23 AM
well. There are many games who are visually confusing.
some have reasons to do so, some don't

I do actually think it's a really good game, but if you don't like certain aspects of it I can definitely understand that
the visuals are extremely weird and not everyone is going to want to do the core game play loop either

@trogdor I am not saying that, I don't know the game at all, just seen the trailer.
The only thing I would say is that I don't really see a purpose for the game to look that way.
I don't know if there is a plot reason.

I didn't mean you definitely don't I just mean that if you don't I wouldn't at all hold that against you
there's no plot reason its kinda just like, a stylistic choice of the game

I mean, if the core mechanic is that you see echoes of what happened, then I would say a more natural choice would seem to have the "present" scenes use color, drawn pictures and the "echoes" the current arty style
But that is just a personal idea.
Like I say, there are many odd visuals in games and I don't pretend to get every single one.

nope strangely enough
the visuals just don't really change between real time and your visions of the past

@trogdor Yep, got that. I was just suggesting that IMHO it would have made more sense if they did.
But since I have also read that the game is quite "grue" on some part, probably it is similar to Isaac on that front.
Deliberate not realistic graphs to avoid being too creepy?
I mean, based on what I read it could become Darkest Dungeon otherwise.

6 hours later…
8:03 PM
There are some gruesome death scenes that would be even more gruesome in color
It's possibly deliberately to keep that from being the case

8:57 PM
there's no movement in those murder scenes but they also like, basically freeze on probably the most gruesome part, just about the exact moment the character(s) who dies, dies
