@AndrasDeak Yeah, I've got no interest in digging into Thermian discussions of legality. War crimes are illegal because they're bad, not bad because they're illegal. They'd still be bad if they weren't illegal.
I'm talking about how media in our world deals with issues like heroes doing bad things.

@BESW I guess this has some parallels with "my character would do this [evil thing]"

Aye, it shares that same fixation on in-fiction consistency at the expense of real-world implications.

or even just using in-fiction as an excuse to be a jerk
but yeah, good-faith first

It's the same category of thing as "using real-world racial stereotypes to depict orcs can't be racist because orcs aren't real."
It's not the orcs that are the problem, it's the real-world racial stereotypes.

yeah

yeah it's kinda like making a movie where the protagonists fly a bomber jet over a non-combatant city and kill everyone in it because one bad guy was hiding in there, and then saying "well but in our movie war crimes don't exist so it's not a depiction of a war crime"
I assume doing that would be a war crime
I hope doing that is considered a war crime

Yes. Yes, I believe that would count as a war crime.

or dropping nukes on two large cities <.< >.>

X(

but people are usually less forthcoming about the implications of the latter :D
