It's because large patches of solid white don't match the rest of the design choices.

White is otherwise used as an accent, not a fill, and the other fills aren't light enough tints for a pure white to blend alongside them.

@BESW I just realized something else that probably contributed to that "uncanny" felling.

Exact same eye/mouth position on all three characters

and since the eyes are designed in a way that actually makes them look like they are pointed upward, that also ends up a little unnatural.

Yeah, the wings are definitely not the only challenge that design is facing. And this new image improves the wings significantly by making them a tint.
