@Derpy I think it's fairly common in many places. Here it's usually the cohort of academically inclined teenagers from rural areas who move out at a young age
And the urban kids generally live with their parents --- if there's room for them --- for a few years more because it's economical.

@kviiri remember: the girl in question also doesn't have any story. No family, no data at the registry office, should simply not be there.
Manages to find a way to enlist to school? When any data search should result in her being never born in the first place.

yeah I'm not so concerned about people being like "why is this kid so independant" it's more like "why does this kid not legally exist?" XD

I mean correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the US basically like that, in that there's no legal requirement for people to be registered?

in what sense?

To have some public record of your existence, at all

8:47 AM
because people aren't like, asking for your birth certificate all the time but people would happen to ask questions to a kid who applied herself into high school with no apparent,... parents or guardians

Eg. here everyone gets a personal ID, every birth must be recorded

and there is a Census here too

Eh, fair point

It's the sum of all of that. Why this kid is so independent while she doesn't seem to legally exist? Suppose she finds a part-time job....
Birthplace: Canterlot
Date of Birth: season #, episode #
Education: Celestia's school for magical Unicorns

Social worker would at some point be sent to check that she has proper shelter and income at the very least
if she did then wtv I think? but I don't know what she's done in those areas
so if we are asking the questions, then yes she needs more than just the fact that she actually does exist to keep the authorities from asking what is going on with her apparent aloneness

8:52 AM
Again, Aelita principle. In Code Lyoko they hack into the local civil registry archiveand alter the data so that Aelita is registered as Odd cousin. Notice that in the animated show there is no hint that Odd parents have been informed of what is going on. And after the show ended... I mean, she has no backstory, what will she do in the future?

basically, if we are applying real world American logic to the show, at some point there would be a PT meeting, she would not have any parents to show
someone would ask why that happened
at some point she would probably be obliged to show the existence of some parents which I assume she can't do
then Social Workers would get involved to figure out what the hell is going on

Anyway, for sake of completion, I forgot something yesterday.

assuming she shows them she is securly independant that might be the end of it? I'm not really sure
to be fair

There is a single episode where she is shown working somewhere.
One of the shorts, she is helping at a sushi-bar.

So canon does solve the income question (to a degree), but not the bureaucracy question, got it.

8:55 AM
that all being said, it's a kids show and I think they don't expect anyone to be thinking of these things XD

(if they wanted to put her in an odd place, they did it. I kinda remember a fan artwork of Sunset selling sushi being made far before that episode, maybe they got the idea there?)

but yes, if we want to ask these questions I think she would definitely get looked into at least a little in her,.. situation

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica not necessarily, she never mentions that again, so that could have been an one-time thing. Like when they started washing cars to collect money for a school trip.
(sorry, wrong reply button, fixed now)

@Derpy Even if it is a one-time thing, it's a sort of acknowledgement that yeah, work is needed, which is why she does do it.
Whether she hops from one to another off-screen is a different matter.

yeah if she's an industrious hard worker I can buy that the financial aspect is covered
and I have no idea if anyone would be prompted to dig deeper than "she seems to be adequately or better taking care of herself" but I'm not an expert on what exactly social workers would look into in cases like this in real life
I'm fairly sure at some point they would get involved but I have no idea if they would bother to dig into paperwork after realizing she's doing fine, or what they would do upon not finding anything
absolute worst case scenario Immigration might get involved? I don't know XD
for all I know they would just be like "oh well you don't have a birth certificate, I guess we need to draft one up, how old are you?"
I will say I don't feel like a kids show does need to answer these questions, but I do think it's an interesting thought experiment XD

9:06 AM
@trogdor and then she replies "two movies and half"

@Derpy I mean, jokes aside I assume she knows her age :P

I wouldn't assume that the ponies age as fast as the humans.

@trogdor EG's Conversion Bureau is called Immigration? (I'm fuzzy on all the naming variants, some of them mutate in translation.)

@trogdor the series seems to imply that hundred years old ponies aren't rare. So, we don't know if pony years map 1:1 to human years.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica I don't think they have anything like that because they are,.. some magically created human-ish dimension in a pony world? but I was mostly going off of Kivirii applying American RL logic to her situation
and I was mostly going off of that at that point
@Derpy well then she could make something up I guess, not the worst lie she would ever have told I assume
I assume she isn't so horrible at math that she can't come up with an equivalent age that works

9:14 AM
@trogdor has to be kinda a genius in the first place if she managed to pick up school without ever having studied some topics before. But that would probably be too much nitpicking. It's mostly no one bothering that she has no past.

yeah

At least until movie 1. By movie 2 the whole school basically knows she was a pony and simply does not care.
Probably because pony Sunset is far less annoying that Old Sunset that everyone assumed was an human.
or maybe the school just happens to be in front of Foster's House....
Could also be the Doraemon/Atatu lemma. By now the city has given up hope to live normally because they know those kids will be constantly causing a mess... so they don't care anymore.

lol

(also, should read Ataru, not Atatu like I wrote)

9:29 AM
I have no idea what it means XD

Some Jedi kid probably.

@trogdor ^ the one on the right.

ah

I think that it is even explicit said in an episode, the city basically expect them to cause big damage at least once in a week.
Was quite popular as an anime many years ago....

9:46 AM
well my knowledge and watching of anime has been quite limited XD
I've probably started watching something like 10 anime and finished something like 3 or 4 or something

Has actually a bronze statue at the Oizumi Anime Station in Nerima, Tokyo.

cool

well, if back in the late '80 you ever actually saw this Rpg rule book....
that was because that tabletop rpg was reskinned to be based on some popular mangas.
One of them being the one I referenced above.
sorry, wrong edit
This is the reskinned cover - the one above is the original one
Never owned either version, just read about it in some anime discussion.
Apparently it was kinda like Fate, but aimed at creating nonsense
@trogdor BTW, if you ever heard about an old anime called "Galaxy Express 999", Oizumi Anime station actually has that anime theme used as the train departure tune.

never have no
XD

10:02 AM
anyway, link to the station site if you wanted to see the actual place.

1 hour later…
11:03 AM
BTW, if anyone was wondering why the character with the green hairs in the picture above is only wearing a swimsuit in the station statue, that's because those are actually her standard clothes.
She is supposed to be an oni.
And in Japan folklore, Oni always wear tiger-skin clothes
Despite that, let me say that the actual anime is less fanservice focused that you may think, especially compared to recent years ones.

3 hours later…
1:53 PM
New Smash Bros character DLC announcement in about 10 minutes.
Hope it is not Crash.

2:14 PM
was Steve.
still not that great for me, but I guess others may like the addition.

3:06 PM
WHAT THE.... ?
@trogdor Remember the "Shantae And the Seven Sirens" scalpers on Amazon, all with a 15-to-30 October shipment date??? While in the meantime Limited Run Games had no info about it on the site???
Well, guess what....
Checked the page just now.
How could the scalpers know the actual shipment date before Limited run revealed it?????
Sep 25 at 11:04, by trogdor
either they have insider information, or someone guessed and a bunch of people just copied that

3:43 PM
also....
Doom gets an actually decent collector item.
Not that I would buy it, but... better than getting a fake gamboy cart.

1 hour later…
4:52 PM
@Derpy A friend is curious whether it comes on proper diskettes.

5:49 PM
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica the floppy is a commemorative pin.
in this particular case, this is just a collector item with NO included game.

@Derpy Yeah, but he was curious about whether real ones are one of the available media on which one could still buy this edition.

apparently, this is just an item they made to go with the release of the Doom 64 ps4/switch port

. . . and has two Shantaes in the search results for some reason.

Because she is Doomguy daughter.
I mean, don't you know about the Doomdad meme?
Or Doombro, depending on who you ask. Either way, there is an ongoing meme of drawing Doomguy with various characters, teaching them how to play the game
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica more seriously, I don't know.

4 hours later…
9:32 PM
@Derpy I actually didn't.
