6:38 AM
@vicky_molokh Unless the King is a down-to-earth but wise and dangerous ranger who wants to reclaim their birthright from an illegitimate hereditary stewardship of Gondor or something

@kviiri That's exactly an example of 'is just better than fellow adventurers', having as many points spent on Ranger stuff as other adventurers on their stuff, and then also a lot of points on Heir (to Gondor etc. etc.).

7:00 AM
@kviiri My favorite adventurer-king is Fflewddur Fflam, son of Godo.
He says it's a very small kingdom, so small that they didn't mind at all when he decided to go off and become a bard without giving the kingship to someone else, because there wasn't enough to administer that it actually needed a king in the first place.
But he's not a very good bard either.

@vicky_molokh In a sense, although honestly I feel Aragorn would work pretty much the same as a character without being a royal.

The college of bards flunked him out. The Chief Bard took pity and gave him a magical harp that always stays in tune... but a string breaks every time he tells a lie. Fflewddur spends more time repairing the strings than playing them.

I mean, not in the Tolkienish scale, but in a Tolkien-derivative fantasy work, yes.

7:40 AM
Then again. Tolkien did have a thing of making just about everyone better than everyone else, in some way.

...My second-favorite adventurer-king is Bran Davies, the son of Arthur and Guinevere, brought forward by Merlin to grow up in the mid-20th century. He's a reluctant hero who just wants to be normal and ordinary, because as an albino orphan he's never been considered either. Also he has a dog that can see the wind.

I'm not sure about kings but Duke Nukem was quite good, before the line between irony and seriousness started blurring in his machismo.
Another noble hero of the DOS-talgy era is Baron Baldrick from Mystic Towers

1 hour later…
9:11 AM
@kviiri so, basically anything starting with 3D and onward?

@Derpy Yeah. Probably helps that DN3D wasn't a part of my childhood except through a few times playing it at a friend's house

@kviiri before that, as far as I know, the two 2d games were basically Turrican clones (and some claim clones with stolen assets too). It is my understanding that the 3D game was the real start of the downward spiral - females as objects, toilet humor, bad jokes...

10:07 AM
@Derpy Run and gun, yes. I never played the first one much but I think the second one was quite good. The graphics were neat and there was a bunch of cool environments to adventure in.
@trogdor Re: Stellaris, have you been watching the news on the upcoming DLC, Federations?

3 hours later…
1:19 PM
@kviiri uh no what does it involve?
ooh I see
I looked it up
it's got, as would be expected, new Federation mechanics
but also some new empire creation stuff like origins and apparently new megastructures
neat
oh and a galactic senate, which I guess is meant to give more diplomatic options

1:34 PM
Yeah, seems like decent improvements although the new content unveiled so far is rather scant

1:50 PM
fair enough
hopefully there is more than that

Yeah

@trogdor "and for all of you folks that loved the End of The Cycle, we decided to port the Seek Mr. Eaten Name quest from Fallen London to Stellaris!" (:P obviously a joke)

Although I mean like, they haven't unveiled much of it yet :P
The specifics are largely up for guessing

@Derpy still never done that, turns out so far I have not rolled up an empire I would love to get eaten by some psionic horror
XD

@trogdor technically, due to a mix of not-so-great AI and min-max players, one could survive the thing and even kill it.
A shame, if you ask.

1:55 PM
lol
it still sounds like a pain

It should be invulnerable, plain and simple.

it still apparently like, eats most of your empire and leaves you with no fleet and just one planet, and it's not even your capital

@trogdor yep, but it is very prone to "wear down tactic"

yeah
I mean, apparently you can feed everyone else to it weakening it and slowing it down till you can build up to kill it yourself?
it kills everyone else before you or something

@trogdor yes, it is programmed to always go for you last. And the other empires are programmed to basically ignore it until they are attacked.
but the real problem is that it is basically a huge clunk that moves thru space and has very bad tracking against small and fast ships.
so, LOTS of small cheap ships can keep it busy while larger ones attack.
Also, it kinda scales with your stats right before the "reckoning" starts and whatever it kills afterward.
so, again, in a way damaging your empire right before the countdown finishes actually mean the End will be initially weaker
That is, if my memory serves.

2:24 PM
hello

/me waves.

how are you

A quiet (in the sense of people leaving me alone mostly) but active (in terms of work activity) day at work.
Also still sorting some soundtracks in the background.

nice
just kinda working on langugae
been kinda out of it this morning

2:41 PM
Hello o/

hey

I'll be popping in only fairly briefly, I'm heading for some board games.

nice

2:59 PM
@vicky_molokh I've kinda been doing more with infernal.

@Gwideon I'm open to checking it out but, expect me to go for long without replying today (more than usual, I predict).

3:19 PM
@Gwideon Oh, since you have a phoneme table and are writing words, it's probably a good idea to document the general expected orthographic depth and/or any common mappings between sounds and written symbols. E.g. whether zh conventionally means the ʒ and/or ʐ sounds, or should it be read literally, or something else.
Wait, that's . . . essentially what the sound chart is doing.

yes

I'm just more used to IPA than the proper names of sounds, sorry.

it's okay
I'm trying to expand the lexicon but I'm not sure if it's any good

@Gwideon I think I'm not good at generating or evaluating vocabulary ideas on a practical level. But on a more theoretical level, I think it's good to focus on the commonly used terms - house, furniture, counting, food, clothing (or similar accessories), movement, common work etc.

okay

GcL
3:54 PM
@Gwideon Reading and reading a variety of things.

nice

2 hours later…
5:42 PM
@Gwideon What's going on on Meta now? I've been a bit OOTL.

same stuff
less intense now but it's still toxic

@Gwideon In chat rooms, or is there a new post?

mostly chat now. Still have posts but they're are less of them as it's been clear that posting a bunch of toxic crap will get your post shut down
@Xirema had a bit of an argument that ended alright but still. trying to play peacekeeper is not doing any good overall anymore.
anyways I'm gonna go back to ignoring meta

@Gwideon I would advise that.

meta.stackexchange.com/q/338655/622332 but this post does seem to exist so yay. probably has a bunch of crap beneath it. It's sad that I expect that now.

6:02 PM
@Gwideon The most upvoted answer seems not-terrible, but after that it kind of veers off into "this is basically totalitarianism!" nonsense. >_<

yeah
it's just kinda sad
@Xirema did you just post the same message twice

@Gwideon Apparently. XD

it's fine
anyways. I don't really want to delve to much into what's going on with meta.
so moving on. has anyone seen tron uprising yet

@Gwideon It's in the queue but will likely have to contend with the second half of SDF Macross, Ultimate Hellsing, and possibly another Macross.

6:18 PM
okay.
i'm a bit annoyed as the pilot isn't on disney+. also a ton of shows are super out of order

Why isn't it?

not sure
it is on youtube though. also there's some indications that the show might be coming back. It's mostly rumors but it would be so cool if they were true

6:33 PM
anyways i'll leave you all alone

7:25 PM
Oh woe, I lost the game
But it was fun

@kviiri Noooooooooooooooooooooo

@Xirema Thank you for writing that answer BTW.

7:46 PM
@Rubiksmoose Yeah, it seemed like the existing answers were kind of glossing over that part of the comparison. The user who got banned on Wikipedia was orders of magnitude more problematic than even the most scathing accusations against Monica accused her of being.

8:15 PM
so how is everyone

pretty good, how about you?

pretty decent

cool
