Welcome to November’s installment of Stack Overflow research updates! This month marks one year since my colleagues in UX research and I started sharing bite-size updates about the quantitative and qualitative research we use to understand our communities and make decisions.

In recent months, we have invested time and energy in improving the question-asking experience on Stack Overflow, one of the most fundamental interactions on our site. In August, I outlined what we learned from the question wizard, our first major change to the question-asking workflow in a decade. In September, Lisa  …

@trogdor @Rubiksmoose > We just revealed the next exciting chapter for the MY LITTLE PONY franchise: MY LITTLE PONY: PONY LIFE, an all-new animated series launching next year alongside a new product line inspired by the series! We’re feeling good!
and people are already calling these "My Little Cats"

keeping all the characters, apparently?

the only one who really worry me is Spike, who is very close to turn into a plush.

....those pony designs unnerve me

@Ash The only therapy I can suggest is browsing a gallery of G1/G3 ponies pictures.
Contrast should make these new design look like the lesser evil.

If the new design means they will get as silly as the MLP MANGA...
count me in....
I mean, the manga gave us this

@Derpy If there's more of a cat vibe, my daughter may be more into it :P

WHat's weird is she loves horses/unicorns, but not my little pony.

@Derpy well this is freaking adorable

3:33 PM
hey

3:54 PM
@NautArch you should thank b_jonas for linking that web comic to me some years ago.

@Derpy oh, ha!I wasn't even looking at the comics. I was looking at the art and then the books.

6:00 PM
so I saw the first episode of the mandolorian. I thought it was pretty darn good

Me too!

I like the kinda old west vibe it has. also that ending has alot of interesting implications.

6:15 PM
no spoilers!! (haven't seen it yet)

won't spoil it

6:45 PM
Definitely worth a watch for any that might be interested though.

6:57 PM
I kinda wanna wait until all the episodes are out and then get a month of Disney+ and binge it all at once though.

@Yuuki not a bad decision there.
I've got young kids, so i'm all in. And we're planning a disney trip, so i actually want them getting more into the overall disney universe so they'll be more excited.

Does Disney+ have all of their nature documentaries?
That's pretty much all I watch on Netflix.

it does!
and new stuff, too
my daughter went straight to the vet show. WHich i'm not sure is above her pay grade, but hey, circle of life.

7:13 PM
mmm do I drop Netflix for Disney+...
I barely watch anything on Netflix, although I did actually manage to get into Stranger Things recently.

definitely could pause it while you try some new stuff and then could always start it back up

1 hour later…
8:25 PM
@Ash same, giving me the same vibe as Teen Titans Go, which I can't explain why but I just cannot stand it's art aesthetic
@NautArch huh, maybe it's the candy coloration, or maybe it's the fact that they talk XD

user15026
@trogdor agreed.

I imagine some people like ponies/unicorns/horse/ect but would prefer they were magical pets rather than,.... people XD

@trogdor yeah, i dunno. I never really watched it, but i'm always up for moar cartoons. Did my best to give both kids a chance to see if they like it.

not for everyone
even sometimes the target audience XD

i mean i'll watch nearly any cartoon. I love me some cartoons.

8:30 PM
yeah but I mean
not everyone is gonna like it

hey has anyone played the star wars rpg. I think i've asked this before

that's all I mean XD

@Gwideon which one?

there have been a couple of those

edge of the empire i guess. not really sure what the differences are.

8:31 PM
ah that's the new one, no I have not

@trogdor yeah, definitely.
@Gwideon i haven't actually played any (yet), but am looking at the 5e version of it.

5e version?

We do have some tagged questions for Edge of the Empire (which is not SW5e)

@Gwideon sw5e.com

hmm interesting
is the non dnd conversion any good

8:34 PM
I've played Knights of the Old Republic
That's the only one I have played though
Plenty of other Star Wars games I've played too but that's the only RPG one

hol up. you talking video games or tabletop @Gwideon?

well I was talking about ttrpgs

I really liked Rogue Squadron and the actual first and second battlefront games

ah, but KOTR is a GREAT video game :)

Not the new ones they are trying to pretend are the only Star Wars Battlefronts that exist XD
@NautArch that was part of my confusion as well
I've not played any of the TTRPG Star Wars games
Not sure I want to honestly

8:38 PM
why

I've had bad experience with franchise TTRPG'S before
Most notably the Stargate one

Is D&D not a franchise TTRPG?

That doesn't mean you shouldn't try it though
@MikeQ well it is but not in the way I meant?
I meant a franchise that exists outside the TTRPG landscape that then makes a TTRPG
XD
But also
D&D isn't exactly my favorite TTRPG
XD
So both sides are covered on that one

I'd like to play a game of it.
If I could make a mando bounty hunter it would be cool

Seems fair enough

8:43 PM
If I were to run a Star Wars TTRPG, I'd use the Faith Corps system.

Yeah if I want to play one I would use some other system for it personally
I still like Star Wars but I don't trust them to make a coherent system for the game
If only because my experiences with that kind of thing in the past color my picture of what it will probably be like

Atomic Robo did well. Dresden Files works at lower power levels but scales very badly. Ummm. I can't think of any other that really felt like a successful conversion.

yeah
again, my biggest disapointment was Stargate SG1
I loved reading the book
then we actually played it and it was a mess

it's made by fantasy flight games which makes other games besides starwars stuff. I think it even has a non starwars version of the system.

tis fair enough
I have not played it
it could even be good

8:56 PM
Looking at the system... aaaah that's not something I want to play.

I can understand that

It's got lots of complexity in places that don't match the franchise's themes or priorities.

@trogdor the spycraft one?

Yup, that's the one.

@Carcer yes

SG-1 is a TV show about characters of great moral fibre succeeding against overwhelming odds through tenacity and ingenuity. For the official RPG they chose d20 Spycraft, a system which sidelines personality traits when it acknowledges them at all and places emphasis on a needlessly finicky combat simulation system that centres on high outcome randomisation. For a show that doesn't even have a combat scene every episode, and combat is almost never the way to solve big problems.

At minimum, a Star Wars TTRPG needs a mechanic that benefits characters with the high ground

i don't think 5e is the best system to do a starwars rpg

Faith Corps, on the other hand, is such a close fit that I'm astonished (a) it wasn't made for Star Wars; and (b) it hasn't been snapped up by the franchise licensees. Mike Olson has been using it to run Star Wars at cons for at least three years now.
(Specifically, he's been using it for Star Wars Rebels style play, which is what I'd do too.)

I've never used fate so I don't know much about it but i know what I'd like from a starwars system. I'd probably like it to be a bit more open ended. I'd also like a focus letting the players do also things and really be able to affect the story.
also yeah the edge of the empire system seems a bit to complex for my liking
okay fate does seem like it would be a good system

I think fate does basically everything you just mentioned XD

I do have one problem. I have trouble getting my players into collaborative narrative games since they're used to the gm being the final arbiter. They tend not to utilize the amount of narrative power that they have. I've been trying to encourage them but um yeah. It's also a little hard to adjust my mindset as a gm. It would probably be useful if I was a player first.
but I guess that's more about giving everyone time to adjust to the new system

10:03 PM
@Gwideon I can understand that, I suspect it'd take me some getting used to as well (but I've never played it either)

yeah that's the problem I had with kids on bikes though by the end of the first session they were getting more used to it.
I also have one player who is..... Very stubborn and doesn't find much appeal in collaborative systems. he prefers something he can have the most "Viable" build in.

@Gwideon IME and based on accounts of other players and GMs, not all FATE campaigns are on the high end of the storygame scale.
The tools for direct-story-collaborative gaming are certainly present in the system, but it's possible to keep them low-key in actual usage.
Now, the charop part of the game will certainly seem underwhelming to that one player.
