> A bee, as used in quilting bee, working bee or spelling bee, is an expression used together with another word to describe a gathering of peers to accomplish a task or to hold a competition.
> Used metaphorically for "busy worker" since 1530s. Sense of "meeting of neighbors to unite their labor for the benefit of one of their number," 1769, American English, probably is from comparison to the combined labor and social activity of the insect; this was extended to other senses (such as spelling bee, first attested 1809; Raising-bee (1814) for building construction, logging-bee for a log-rolling; also hanging bee "a lynching").
:/
that last one took a turn

@V2Blast Quite likely. I tried googling for the etymology but couldn't find anything decent with "working bee"

> Because the word describes people working together in a social group, a common false etymology is that the term derives from the insect of the same name and similar social behavior. According to etymological research recorded in dictionaries, the word in fact probably comes from dialectal been or bean (meaning "help given by neighbors"), which came from Middle English bene (meaning "prayer", "boon" and "extra service by a tenant to his lord")

@V2Blast "The Hanging Bee" sounds like an interesting one-shot.

Ben
@linksassin I would be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued

It reminds me of that song from Hunger Games. "Hanging Tree"

@V2Blast Not saying it would be a joyful one shot. Maybe run it in Barovia

Aaaah, no Strange Fruit please.

@BESW Not sure I understand.

The references to lynching.

Yeah

Ben

Yeeeah, it's not a joke is the thing.

@BESW Ah. Makes sense. Certainly didn't think it was a joke.

Ben
@BESW Ture, but editing "joke" to "reference" is effort :P
