But like,.. he is so obviously the bad guy
You have to be ignoring a lot not to notice that

Yes... and yet.

I do get it if someone complains about the new star wars stuff because it is moving on from the older material, I felt that way at first too

He's also obviously the main character.

Except he gets barely any actual screen time

He's the young male Force-user, descended from the Skywalker bloodline. Everything about the first six films tells us he's the one we're there to watch.
If you go into the new films immersed in not just the lore, but the structure of the older films, it's very confusing.

12:09 AM
That is far from everything
@BESW mk sure

Pretty much. The first six films are about two generations of a Force-sensitive family and how that particular bloodline is instrumental in the rise and fall of galactic power.
Star Wars has always been about Skywalkers. Now there's a new member of that family at the helm of a new galactic power. If we're looking at it strictly from the perspective of Star Wars (which, lets face it, a lot of fans aren't exactly immersed in narrative analysis or film critique outside Word of God fandom culture), Kylo Ren is baffling.
Throw in contemporary political conflicts and an unhealthy chunk of resistance to self-awareness, and it's easy to get a really weird message from TLJ.
That's not the only path to this kind of thing, obviously, but it's one I've seen.

12:29 AM
Anyway, I'm going to wait for the Star Wars sheep / Star Trek goat crossover we all deserve.

12:40 AM
@BESW the resistance to self awareness also baffles me

I refer you to Angry Jack.

I started doing a significant amount of introspection just in middle school
@BESW mk, I will look at that when I get home

Summary for our purposes: for many people "I do bad things" maps almost perfectly to "I am a bad person." In cultures with a deep-seated belief that people are Good or Bad and don't change, there's a LOT of investment in Not Being A Bad Person.
Therefore, introspection doesn't lead to positive change and becoming a better person: it leads to learning you're doomed to be the villain.
So it's a lot more comfortable to just assume you're Good and anyone who complains about what you're doing is Bad or Doesn't Understand or Has Been Tricked By Bad People.
Because if you're a Good Person, then you do Good Things.

@BESW but that is like,... Really shallow introspection though

Yes.
But it takes any introspection to push through to the deeper stuff, and this paradigm actively discourages people from that.

12:44 AM
I just don't understand that

There's no reasoning here. It's purely emotional logic.

Mm maybe it's just something I won't ever understand

Have you ever not checked your email because you thought there might be a message you didn't want to deal with?

I've almost always been so introverted that it was difficult not to think this way
@BESW no, not quite
I have later ignored the person who sent it though

Heh.

12:48 AM
Not saying it's better
Just different

Yeah, I get it.
Well, a number of people have a sort of ostrich-head-in-sand reaction to things they don't want to deal with. If I ignore it long enough, it'll stop being a problem.
I have this. It's not good.
And I can easily see myself actively defending character flaws I don't want to deal with.

@BESW I mean,.... I do this specifically if I have to seek another person s help with something
If I have a problem I can fix myself it dies in flames
But I really don't like asking for help
That kidney stone thing involved trying to just let it pass (Both times!) Before realizing the Pain was just too bad

@trogdor So, take that tight, balled-up "don't wanna!" feeling, and the "it's starting to hurt to pay attention to this" feeling, and mash them together. Now try to imagine feeling that whenever somebody starts talking about behavior you engage in, or situations you find yourself in.
It's easier to lash out to make the feeling go away by making people stop talking about it, rather than to face the feeling and wade through it.

@BESW actually when other people criticize me I already get that reaction

Yes, but this isn't just specific criticism against you.

12:55 AM
Ok,...?

It's hearing "toxic masculinity" and dreading that it might include you, so just lashing out at anyone who says it.

Oh
See that would never occurr to me
Criticizing a thing rather than a person wouldn't give me that reaction

We have a mutual friend who shall here remain nameless who told us, years ago, that he once felt ashamed to be male because of all the terrible things he was hearing about masculinity and male privilege.

That is sad

He managed to break through that and come out the other side realizing that he could define himself separately from those things, but a lot of people instead respond with "stop saying things that make me feel bad."

12:59 AM
I have the most trouble with criticism specifically from my parents
I see a certain bias they have, and they make a lot of assumptions whenever they do say something in criticism of me
And then they get things wrong based off those assumptions and it makes me furious
But they not only don't like it when I show any anger at them, they can't listen to me when I bring this up to them
Because I am still their "Kid" and I have no authority to bring something like that up to them
My parents are great for a lot of reasons but that is not one of em
It's the biggest reason I wish I didn't still live at home

Aw.

It doesn't even get all that bad very often, but it's still annoying at the least when it happens
I've actually even made some progress with my father on it
But my mom has gotten used to not being challenged when her mind is made up
And I will admit that people skills are not my strongest suite either

@PixelMaster Here's the comment you left:

it only makes it harder to hit the creature. To reduce the damage, you need resistence (1/2 damage) or immunity to the type of damage that the attack deals (slashing, bludgeoning, and piercing for regular weapons, or fire, cold, etc. for other effects). There are also class features (such as the rogue's "Uncanny Dodge") that allow you to reduce the damage regardless of resistence. You can stack such a feature with resistence for 3/4 damage reduction, but gaining resistence from multiple sources doesn't help any more than just from one source.
