That said, note that many characters in one piece have a very "over the top" design.

That is also avoiding a side issue - character design has gotten blatantly more fan-service when compared to the first episodes.

I mean

I feel like any time someone shows me a character from this they look weird as hell

@trogdor To be fair, I choose some of the worst contenders on purpose, but yep, everyone is weird. And most females now have an impossible hourglass figure as a result of what I said before.

What is Sunset's personality originally like?

Saw herself as an alicorn in the mirror, became obsessed with that idea, got into an argument with Celestia (who totally failed to manage the problem in a decent way btw) and escaped to the other world.

There she tried to continue her "rise to power" attempt, which culminated into stealing Twily crow (HOW she knew there was a crow and WHY the crow had any power... never got an answer).

Failed miserably, got really burned in the process.

Anyway, after the sudden - but oddly more credible than what it would probably seem by just reading this line - reforming she basically flips completely from zero empathy to absolute empathy (most of the time - getting stuck into a groundhog day loop with PINKIE was enough to make even her snap...)

It is kinda weird because they do manage to turn the same character from mostly-mean to adorkable over the end of a movie.

The small comic prequel to the first movie is basically all you have to work with as for the original issue that got Sunset into the other world.

Notice that it may not even be fully her fault since that mirror... could have ended up showing what was supposed to be her opposite (explaining the mirror would be a whole topic by itself)

and it would not be the first time the mirror causes serious damage, so I wouldn't call Celestia idea to show her THAT very smart at all...
