except like I pointed out, all those girls were weirdly happy despite all the obviously destroyed buildings and the overgrown roads and stuff

I can understand the claim, but I would also point out it is a game where you have to find the substance yourself.

it is not one of those movie like things where all is shoved at your face.

The main concept of the game is lingering memories

you meet many ghosts that are still waiting for something, and help some to find their closure

if you don't take notice of the memories you see, you won't get to notice their stories.

So, basically, if you play games just to finish them and then sell them, this is not the game for you.
