hello
09:04
hello
thanks!
my latest config file is the one I added to my question, resulting from cat /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml

4 hours later…
12:41
@Py-ser As I mentioned (twice) before, I did a minor edit to the minimal .xml file in Update #1 in my answer. Please use it, and restart thermald.
@Py-ser Start replies to me with @heynnema so I can get flagged.
13:29
@heynnema
gotcha, I edited the file and restarted thermald
open two terminal windows
show me "systemctl status thermald"
13:31
$ systemctl status thermald

where are the indents?
13:34
it is indented, just not shown on this window
so it looks like in my Update #1, yes?
yes
how many CPU's do you have?
I copied it and pasted it
$ lscpu |grep 'CPU(s)'
CPU(s): 12
On-line CPU(s) list: 0-11
NUMA node0 CPU(s): 0-11
after you pasted in the newer .xml, you restarted thermald, yes?
13:36
after i pasted it, I did "sudo service thermald restart
"
in your Vitals display, you're showing package ID 0 temps, and fan speed, yes?
yes
what do they say now?
now they are just fine, I am not running any heavy jobs
average temp is 35 C
fan speed?
13:39
0 RPM
huh?
shouldnt it?
laptop or desktop?
laptop
when u run your heavy jobs, do u see the fan speed increase from 0?
13:41
yes, very much. I can even hear them
ok, good
in one terminal window, type "top"

back to top,
you've seen this before, yes?
top? yes, definitely
but never noticed about the swap thing
ok, we're going to run a test now,
leave top running,
when we stress the machine, you'll hopefully see 12 processes that pop up near the top of the "top" display that will show that thermald is working,
but you won't see them until the temp creaps up over your threshold of 55C,
in the other terminal window, type "YES", the watch the temp increase from 39C, and monitor the "top" output in the other window, tell me how high the temps get, and if u see the processes I described in the "top" display.
13:48

What version Ubuntu?
20.what?

13:58
I tried to change the download server but apparently it doesnt work either
where did u change download server?
the updater was asking if I wanted to upgrade. and I chose yes. I mean, it wasn't native 20.04
I changed it in the software updates window (the one with the big A)
Open "Software & Updates"
yes, there
now it is set to "servers in Italy"
what does the "Download from" say?
14:00
"servers in Italy"
confusing... you system is messed up... what programs do u run to stress and drive up temps...
it is some computation softwares
data simulations and such
u still have top running in one terminal window, yes?
yes
start the comp softwares and monitor top, and the temps, and the fan speed. report what u see.

set your Download from server from Italy to GB, then do "sudo apt-get update" again.

Hi Doug!
14:24
wait, maybe I found a server from UK that is accepted in the "download from" window
It's updating
are u sure you're in the "Software & Updates" app?
yes
Just catching up. I see you are on a tangent for now.
it's updating what exactly?
it's ok Doug

does it give you an error message?

I agree.
I'd really rather not : )
I've already spent way too much time on this. Reinstall a fresh Ubuntu... whether you'd like to or not :-)
gotcha. thank you very much for your time!
ok. keep me posted here via chat, but start messages with @heynnema so I'll get notified
14:32
sure, but I'll try several other ways before going for a reinstall
14:58
@hey
@heynnema just in case, how do you suggest to reinstall?
15:30
I added a comment to your new question referring to here.
@Py-ser Backup your important data/files first. Then boot to a Ubuntu Live USB. I believe that a Ubuntu install will see the previous install, and give an options to install to the same location. Just make sure to uncheck the "format" checkbox so it should leave your /home folder alone.
there is my name and other sensitive info here, I'd really like not to show this to the public
Who/what are you asking?
@DougSmythies please consider to delete that comment in the new question
new question?
15:32
@DougSmythies this
No. This is public anyhow, and you are asking for more help without the history.
There's nothing in this chat to be worried about.
@heynnema : agreed
I asked you to do remove the link, it is not up to others to decide what I have to worry about or not. ignoring my request isn't kind of you. you are not helping me this way
Are you talking to @DougSmythies? It's not clear.
In your new question, you're just asking somebody new to help fix a broken system. Something that a Ubuntu reinstall should fix :-)
15:38
I am. s/he is the one who linked the room and s/he is the one who decided to ignore my request "to help me better"
I am attempting to make others aware of all the details with the objective of efficient use of their time.
It's not fair to other users to not be made aware of your previous question/chat.
@DougSmythies agreed
@Py-ser Fix a broken system by reinstalling... as painful as that might be... and as much work as it could be.
It would have been far more efficient if relevant info from this chat were pasted in the new question. Instead the user is ignoring my kind request, and practically not helping anyhow. I leave it here, it is of no use anyway. Thanks @heynnema for your time
