@ypercubeᵀᴹ While this specifically doesn't violate a normal form (unless the referenced column is part of a key), it does introduce a vector for update anomalies which were alluded to but never really defined clearly.
My general opinion on this is it was never specifically mentioned because when you could store like 2 bytes/meter of magnetic tape, no one thought someone would be stupid enough to store essentially the same information more than once
2/3 of my kids are competitive "footballers" now ... and 1/3 is still learning how to be a part of our family. covid was a wrecking-ball for learning how to be in high school.
so much so that we've strongly considered expat but dont know where to go
