What the hell is cloudlinux anyway?

@JoelESalas Fuck me, I should have bitched about the same thing, then. :(

But that's the main event for tonight!

If only. Still another couple months of that crap, sadly.

@ewwhite Woohoo! Midnight UTC! Rep Rollover!

@HopelessN00b Well, several months... Post-election we get to hear the losing side (either one) bemoan how it was rigged/unfair/predetermined/etc

12:04 AM
That's... everyday in American news.

@HopelessN00b ...and that's why I don't watch US TV news...
Even better, the only remaining local newspaper here recently moved their site to a subscription model... Good luck guys!

...me either. Still need to find a way to accidentally catch the occasional sound bite from it, though. It's like being stabbed in the ear with a penis, but without any of the good parts of ear-penis interaction.

Oh, I'm all setup with popcorn...

Ok gents. Time for a steak and a beer.

12:11 AM
@jscott it's not as fantastic as a steak and a blowjob, but the ladyfriend isn't in town this week.
4

@Adrian Well, still, I know we are all able to finish ourselves, but it's tough to beat steak and beer.

@jscott Very true. And while the back door of the office may smell like a latrine in the morning, we're two blocks walking distance from a bunch of great bars.

1 hour later…
1:28 AM
Is anyone watching the debate?

I'm deliberately not watching it.

I'm busy touching myself under the desk hoping that none of my coworkers notice
5

@JoelESalas About 10 ma-jillion people on Twitter are.

@jscott I find that highly unlikely. Isn't twitter only used by spambots and companies trying to break into social media?

@JoelESalas I didn't know there was any debate going on until... two hours ago when someone asked me if I was going to watch the debate. "What debate?"

1:36 AM
@HopelessN00b No, I'm pretty sure it has the same asshole-posting-radical-party-affiliation-chest-thumping posting rate that FB has. But I don't do FB, I just hear people bitching about it :)

@WesleyDavid Not the slave debate, the masterbate!
2

@WesleyDavid vi vs emacs debate... sigh, again.
@HopelessN00b I'd vote for that.

@jscott Fair enough. To be honest, I wouldn't know. This site is as close as I get to "social media." No FB, twits, Linked-in, or anything like it.
@jscott You would? I could see @voretaq7 wanting to see a masterbate with Obama and Romney, but I'm a little surprised to see you interested in such a thing, to be honest.
To get me interested, I think it would have to involve the wives, but hey, to each his own and all that.

@HopelessN00b I dunno, "mass debate" "masturbate", English is a funny language.

@jscott Ah, so that's where that came from. Your downfall being not having as perverted a mind as me.

1:41 AM
I mean if the ref [do they call them 'ref' in a debate?] asked the candidates "When was the last time you masturbated?" I would, possibly, die from laughing.

@HopelessN00b I used to work as a fishing guide. I started out as a journeyman hooker, and graduated to a master baiter.
2

@WesleyDavid ba dum tishhhhhhh

@jscott I think it's moderator, or something like that. And while I'd love to see it, that sounds like something the FCC would literally crucify a person for.
Would it be pathetic to point out that I joined the school rugby team solely on the basis of hearing that each rugby team had a hooker on it?

Talk about false advertising.

@jscott A moderator runs a debate.

@ChrisS Yes, thanks, that was the designation I was looking for.

2:14 AM
This is really amusing

@JoelESalas So I hear, Fail Whale AHOY

yawn-debate

@ewwhite So it's going that well?

it's really crappy

@ewwhite I'd expect presidential candidates to be a bit more polished when they're, you know, debating for the presidency

2:33 AM
So who won?

@ewwhite Definitely not the moderator

tru

2:46 AM
What SP should Vista be on these days?

MSNBC says Romney won.

GF's laptop is installing sp1 right now as an automated install.

@Adrian There's an SP2 for Vista... but SP1 is a prereq

Sheesh. She probably never left it on lOne enough to do a check either.

Q: SUSE Linux hangs while BIOS update

kiranSUSE Linux machine hangs while BIOS upgrade. When i do a manual power off and power on, the display does not comeback and i can see amber LED on the display tablet of my POS machine. ALL the LEDS(HDD, power supply, Fan, Memoery error) on the tower(CPU) back also are on when i power on the machine...

@Adrian "I'm in the middle of a critical task! ... Ok, now to update the BIOS"
2

3:01 AM
@JoelESalas "...okay, now to power off the machine while updating the BIOS so I can get back to my critical task!" kicks out power cord
2

@Adrian I don't know if I should be more irritated at you... or the PM whose assignments I'm procrastinating on... but I actually answered that freaking question, you bastid. >:/

A: SUSE Linux hangs while BIOS update

HopelessN00bYou're screwed. The way to fix this quickly is to use a different machine, and this very thing is the reason that BIOS and firmware updates come with a warning (usually a big, colorful one) not to power them system off during the update. If it's even possible to recover the system from this (an...

@HopelessN00b This is why the major brands have dumped oodles of time (a drop in the bucket relatively speaking, but for the specific feature it's a lot) making their firmware update process completely infallible.
Most servers come with dual BIOS now; and the flash process is quite complicated where it writes certain areas in a incremental way... Much like a journaled file system actually.

@ChrisS And that PITA feature of not letting you update your laptop BIOS when you're not plugged in, and the like.

Yep ;]

@ChrisS Oh, nifty... did not know that... maybe BIOSes are worth a look these days. Sounds like they've evolved a lot since back in the day when they were so primitive they bored me to tears.

3:12 AM
The one in my home workstation went bad last year during a flash.. That sure was fun, not.
It's a MSI board or something like that... I feel so pampered by HP's flash process, no booting to DOS with some crazy utility that stops responding for 3 minutes then comes back "Done" or "Error". All my laptops are now HP Elite Books (used go cheap on eBay).
I'd strongly consider switching the workstation, but I like to build my own computers too much.

I'm installing the latest VirtualBox right now. 'cause, you know, I need my business email servers to run good on my MacBook.

Nice. The modern Dells have a similar feature too, and probably most other OEMs...

On that note I actually ordered a case for my next workstation. it-tech-uk.com/small-micro-atx-pc-cases/…

And like you say, I'd consider buying an OEM desktop too, if I didn't enjoy building my own so damn much.

Yeah, you can hardly go wrong with Dell or HP gear.

3:17 AM
@HopelessN00b: and least with the last OEM desktop I worked with, the case was horrible

@ChrisS That is sleek. Unfortunately, I must have the e-penis envy thing going on, or something, because I never go smaller than a full tower for my desktops. My most recent one weights over 100 pounds with everything I've stuffed in to it, and not surprisingly, functions as a slightly too effective space-heater in my den/computer room.

/me hardly had any space to work in it
@ChrisSl: going all integrated?

@JourneymanGeek Always the case with OEM cases. Going back as long as I can remember... so almost 20 years.

also, no drive bays

@HopelessN00b My current is a Koolance PC2-601b

3:18 AM
@ChrisS IBM gear has been quite good to us. But it's expensive.

had this wierd arrangement with sideways mounted drives bolted straight to the side of the case

@Adrian I haven't used IBM gear in 7-8 years, but it was not a good experience at the time..

I for one of these
its a 'mini' tower, allegedly.
its huge, and lovely to work with

3:20 AM
@ChrisS Much purtier than mine... let's see if I can even find an image of my case online.

@HopelessN00b That's what it looked like when it was new... ~9 years ago

Our other system is in an old centurion, which is looking none the worse for wear after 5 years

@Adrian My experience with IBM gear is that it's beautiful and awesome when it works. You can just leave it powered on in a corner for 15 years. When something goes bad, though, it goes REALLY bad.

@HopelessN00b Could very well be. The only problems we've ever had with it were 100% crappy software issues.
Whether Ubuntu or the shite Steinmetz VPNd we used for years.

Ah, my case is this guy:

3:22 AM
@HopelessN00b I had all kinds of weird hardware failures... And the icing on the cake was the RAID HBA that stored the configuration in the Card's ROM. So if you switched drives it would try to use the same settings and fail; and if you configured for the new drives there was no recovering anything from the old drives.

*shudder*

Yeah, IBM software and firmware is inhumanly awful, no doubt about it.

Weird. My comment from that BIOS update question disappeared.

@Adrian Yeah, the mods around here, they jump on any excuse to kill a comment, even a useful, upvoted comment. :(

@HopelessN00b Well, personally, I think it's rather shitty to delete comments without sending a note saying that the mod thinks it's over the line.
Frankly, that one didn't even approach TomTom levels of snark.

@Adrian I only feel that way on the comments I'm particularly proud of. But comments are the bastard, red-headed step-children of the SE network, and are treated as such, unfortunately.

3:26 AM
@Adrian TomTom has been banned from the site quite a few times now.

@Adrian I didn't think it was snarky at all, honestly. Of course, maybe that says more about why my comments get flagged a lot than anything else. :)

@ChrisS yes, but simply pointing out that the OP is the proud owner of a very expensive doorstop is even marginally helpful..

@HopelessN00b The mods aren't the only ones who have noticed certain "less than friendly" comments and posts... SF is one of several sites that have earned a reputation.

@ChrisS you're a mod. Maybe you can shed some light on why that one got tossed?

@Adrian Where?

3:30 AM
@ChrisS Not blaming you guys... you're only reacting to the people who flag them. (Who, incidentally, must be the wimpiest, whiniest group to ever inhabit the planet, IMO, but... whatever.)

The BIOS question.
1
Q: SUSE Linux hangs during BIOS update

kiranMy SUSE Linux machine hung while doing a BIOS upgrade. I guess I'm assuming you can see comments deleted by other mods.
I'd still have the comment in my clipboard for posting here, which I almost did, but the GF's laptop wanted to reboot for Vista SP1.

@HopelessN00b It doesn't say who's flagging things.... Someone may have it out for you. Though your stuff that's been flagged has been at least questionable... So if someone's looking there's stuff to be found.

@ChrisS Meh. We're sysadmins, not social workers.
Believe me, I know the difference. Intimately.

@ChrisS I was told that one of my funnier, marginally useful comments that got a bunch of upvotes also attracted "a lot" of flags, so I don't think it's just one person.
Probably just me being crustier than most. shrug I am who I am, probably too late to change that now.
Crap.

What moron gave the folks at work my phone number? Me obviously, but damn am I stupid sometimes... *sigh*

If the OP gets pissy because he bricked his machine, well, that's his poor judgment for trying to flash his BIOS while he was working on a critical project.

3:35 AM
@Adrian I know... But there are non-technical people in SE that say we need to be nice when we hit noobs with the cluebat. =]

@ChrisS Frankly, SF is not a place that's appropriate for IT noobs. It even has 'server' in the name.
Hell with it. No sense in arguing about .SE on .SE. It's a rigged game because it's a game.

@Adrian And a FAQ that states "for professional sysadmins," not that it's going to make a difference in the pressure to... make the clue-by-four smackings more friendly.

@Adrian I think it's mostly due to two things: 1. The proliferation of the non technical sites, where the general level of snark is equivalent to a IT worker who's sleeping. 2. Most of the advertising revenue is "generated" by drive-bys, which is fueled by search engines (which are amazingly good at filtering out forums and such based on "snark")

I suppose the idea of putting a note in the ServerFault FAQ that sysadmins are snarky because of lusers like you is also a non-starter, huh? :D

@ChrisS I suppose we'll see. Dump crap long enough and you poison your own well. This place would be a steaming pile of crap if it weren't for about 15-20 really sharp guys who stick around. And if there were no answers, there'd be no ad revenue because there'd be no views.

3:42 AM
@HopelessN00b: someone who hasn't bothered to hang around to learn what the community is like isn't gonna read a FAQ

@Adrian Conversely I've heard on more than a few occasions of people coming to SF and never wanting to come back because it's not "Professional" enough. Not sure what they're measuring SF against, but it's the way it is.

@JourneymanGeek And putting up a screen with FAQ information before the question screen is seen as a barrier to content creation.

@Adrian: and some people will skip it ;p
At the end of the day all we can do is kill off bad questions and answers and hope it works

Mods get flagged for "low quality Questions" automatically. It used to say "Also skipped FAQ" (there was a banner for new users that would pop up). I never saw too many where they didn't skip the FAQ.

But that won't fix scope
chances are your suse/bios flasher is a developer handling his own system rather than a sysadmin. An automated system won't catch that.

3:49 AM
Well, I've flagged Mr. BIOS to be sent to SU where he should've gone in the first place. I swear the Question Entry Form should have the first two bullet point lists from the FAQ in blinking red text.

@JourneymanGeek Not saying it would help, but it would give me a wonderful, smug feeling. :)

eheh
@Adrian: god, I will be happy when I hit 3K here

@Adrian I was considering that, but then I thought, "SF doesn't migrate crap" and decided against it.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah. My goal's to do that next week unless I get pissed off and quit answering Qs for another 3-4 months. Like last time.

closing it would not be a bad idea
@Adrian: eh, I'm working at it
I haven't gone over the 'hump' like I have on SU yet

3:55 AM
What happens when you hit 3k on SU? Pity sex from a hot redhead?

@HopelessN00b Or one swinging a cat5-of-9-tails?

Wait, you're talking about ServerFault!!!! How do you guys not have 3k here?

@HopelessN00b ServerFault makes bad questions get on their knees and plead for their live before shooting them execution style.
4

@WesleyDavid As it should be!

@HopelessN00b: I have no illusions of being a professional sysadmin yet ;p
@HopelessN00b: vote to close

3:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek If it makes you feel any better, you're already miles ahead of half the professional SAs I've had to deal with (and restrain myself from murdering) this week.

Yes I did get the VIP pass to last week's conference just for this:

@HopelessN00b: precisely cause I know and want to be better at things

that's why I'm here. I'm sneakily learning from all y'all ;p

And yes, that really was the Image 151 from my phone. =]

4:00 AM
@ChrisS A conference that serves hard liquor? That's not a recipe for drunken disaster.

@JourneymanGeek Chopper is my hero. He totally reminds me of a book I read a few years back about the halcyon days of running under-sea fiber all over the world.

@WesleyDavid grrcon.org I thought it was a great idea. There's only 100 VIPs, so most people had to stick with the free beer.
My only regret was waiting until later to grab some Grey Goose... as later it was gone.

You can take consolation in the fact that Grey Goose sucks.
French vodka, really? Blech.

@ChrisS nice.

Grey Goose is awesome stuff. Every other French vodka I've had sucks.
But all the Polish vodka I've had sucked too. Only the Russians and Americans have any knowhow from what I've tasted.

4:08 AM
I guess... come to think of it, most all the popular-in-America, mass-produced vodka is shit.

So what vodka do you like?

@HopelessN00b the only ones I like are micro-distillery. But then I think vodka's pretty tasteless. Give me a good Gin any day.
extra dry martini with 2 olives, 5:1 gin to extra dry vermouth.

@Adrian Vodka is supposed to be good for two things, keeping warm and adding alcohol without flavor... Most vodkas add the flavor of a** and hairspray.

Yeah, a nice gin is good too.

@ChrisS odd, sounds like what my ex smelled like after a night of clubbing.

4:11 AM
Indeed, if you can taste the vodka you're drinking, it's not good vodka.

@HopelessN00b my boss claims you develop a taste for the various tiny impurities, but i think he's full of crap.

Hrm... I'm sure I've encouraged such behavior in the past.
Makes me want to hit the club again.
Then I remember that I'm fat now.

@Adrian He might be right, but good vodka's filtered multiple times to remove those impurities, so... I dunno, maybe I'm just a vodka snob.

@HopelessN00b i upvoted the bios question after migration. So now you have more SU rep than I do.

@ChrisS swishswish "Ahh... Smirnoff. 2006. Definite bouquet of Chron's disease, with slight undertones of IBS and diarrhea."

4:14 AM
@Adrian We'll see about that... just gotta find 2 SU answers to downvote... shouldn't be too hard. :)

@Adrian When you distill vodka, you have to pitch the first and last 5% of the batch because it's inpurity heavy (large distilleries don't "waste" anything). Then send it through at least the equivalent of one carbon filter, and 3 is pretty common. @HopelessN00b isn't being snobish, that's the way it's supposed to be.

Does it have to be THIS hard to install CentOS in VBox. >_<

@ChrisS not arguing that, am saying my boss is full of shit that he can taste the differences between top flight ultra-distilled vodkas.

@WesleyDavid An unmistakable sign you should be installing Windows 8RT instead. :o

@Adrian The only difference I can really tell between the high end vodkas is the proof; and that's not really so much "taste".

4:17 AM
What does he consider "top flight" and "ultra-distilled?"

Maybe he's like the guy I know who's convinced that Bud Select is a "top shelf" beer. :/

Budweiser should sponsor SF.

@HopelessN00b beats me. I try not to listen. Actually doing winemaking at home and growing up around wineries in Upstate NY, I tire of people yammering about booze as if they're knowledgeable.
@HopelessN00b That's a lot of downvoting you're going to have to do tonight....

Ah, gotcha. And, FWIW, I could never master the art of completely tuning out my boss either.

And 9980 rep? That needs fixing right now.

@Adrian Wait, what the crap? Did you just upvote every post I have on SU? Not nice, man.

4:21 AM
@HopelessN00b lol
10 points apiece. Takes a lot of downvotes to make up for 4 upvotes

@Adrian Alright, I'll forgive you, because I assume it's you who bumped me over the line on SF.

@HopelessN00b It's a hobby of mine, actually. Especially since by the time one is close to 10k, there's some awesome answers in need of lovin'.
@HopelessN00b Now go play with the 10k tools for awhile and brag about their sheer awesomeness so that we can be jealous.

Alright. as you command. After posting a screenie to memorialize the occasion in chat.

@HopelessN00b Oh, I missed it. Congratulations on our newest 10k user!

@HopelessN00b BRB, got 40 downvotes to give...

4:27 AM
@ChrisS Adrian just pushed me over the line. But thanks. And could you suspend the cat for a few hours real quick?
@WesleyDavid :p

@HopelessN00b ZOT!ZOT!ZOT!ZOT!
This is NOT a place for 'Live Support', ask on the main site. // Insult Management and get a star!

Meh, he's been around for a while... I think we can save the droolproof paper for another time.

I'm wondering if this is actually spam. It's definitely just one reseller's website and not the canonical website for the product.
1
A: DNS management for WHMCS / cPanel?

KevinThere is already a WHMCS addon to do this. cPanel DNS manager for WHMCS

Whereas the canonical URL seems to be: whmcs.com/appstore/426/DNS-Manager.html

@Adrian I missed that. I'll go correct my mistake, thanks.

@HopelessN00b Well, I only noticed because I took the time to go dig through the internet for that product. The text that the link is embedded in makes it sound more official than it was.
I'm blaming the late night caffeine buzz. Normally I'm happy to simply downvote WHM & Cpanel questions.
I'd seriously like those to have an official policy from the mods to be sent over to Webmasters

@Adrian That would get my vote, but I think the problem is "we don't migrate crap," and officially, 99% of cPanel/WHM questions are crap.
Cool, just used my first delete vote! Thanks, man. I wonder if there's a delete review queue...

@HopelessN00b Well, they're crap for here. They might be less so for Webmasters.
I think we have a higher bar here than some other sites.

@Adrian True, we do. Maybe that's it, but all the cPanel questions I see are basically "halping me to be setting up tha intertubes sight, please?"

5:19 AM
@HopelessN00b True, but the bar on Webmasters is so low than it only garners a couple sentences in their FAQ.
Not that the low bar is a bad thing for them, since it gives the noobs a place to go to talk to folks who know their software.

Yeah, you're right. I've had to do some web development in my day, and honestly, webmasters seems... um, beneath me... even though I basically know nothing about deploying/developing a modern website.

good morning @Ladadadada

@WesleyDavid for some reason it always works for me the time i reinstall
I have no clue why
o0
the fish?
just got a massive rep boost out of nowhere
Prolly means someone got too votehappy and i'm gonna see it poof ;p

@JourneymanGeek Nah, I went and gave you and Adrian +50 rep a piece on under-rated answers when I realized you were both under 3k here.

ahh thanks ^^

5:31 AM
I'd have done more, but I figure I'll need the other 30 votes for downvoting crap later in the day. :)

@HopelessN00b Thanks. Should've just gone and done it awhile back, but haven't had the time and been annoyed at how some things are handled around here.

5:45 AM
Oh, I totally understand. If I wasn't the vast majority of the way to fanatic, I'd have taken a week or two off to let my irritation at those very things fade away.

And for what it's worth, if/when I drop off .SE for a little while in 11 days, you know why. :)

ugh, I hate it when the door randomly self opens ;p
lol
@HopelessN00b: kidnapped by ninjas, I am sure ;p

@JourneymanGeek Nah, I'm cool with those guys. I give them lots of business disposing of my worst lusers.
But, speaking of being annoyed by some things... we have another y is my males being caled SPAM???? question. sigh

Q: Why Does hotmail still reject my emails?

DailI have a very strange problem. I just have configured Postfix + Dovecot on my server and all works perfectly. I can Send/Receive emails. I only have problems with hotmail accounts, I do not understand the reason, because I also configured: SPF DKIM rDNS My IP is not listed in any backlist, I us...

And, @ChrisS and @theothermodstoo , I want it noted that I left a nice, useful comment, instead of the much funnier, much more likely to be flagged+deleted comment I really wanted to leave.

Shouldn't you be asleep by now?

Remember me bitching about how I was stupid for giving the people at work my phone number a couple hours ago?

Well, three guesses why I'm still awake, and probably will be all night. I mean, it's overtime, and it pays well, so I'm not complaining too much, but it's gonna be another long, horrible day to get that money.

Must be nice earning overtime =P

5:57 AM
@ChrisS No kidding.

It is, and all the other SAs at the place hate me for it, but after the 6th week in a row of 60+ hours and 0 days off, well, that's starting to not cut it so much anymore.

At least I know they're decent folks to work for.... most companies would pile the overtime hours on the salaried employees to save $$ on the consultant.

@HopelessN00b You've worked 42 days straight?

@MilesErickson I did that once for IBM. 3 days off between Thanksgiving and Valentine's day. 1600 hours between Thanksgiving and Easter.

@MilesErickson Give or take, yeah. Of course, some of those Saturdays or Sundays were like 2 hours of work... so it's not quite as bad as working 42 days straight, so much as it's not having had a day off in 6 weeks.

@HopelessN00b Working 2 hours on a Saturday is far worse than working 12 hours on a Saturday, IMHO. It's like... I just ruined my weekend for that?

6:00 AM
My father's worked 10 straight 7-day weeks every summer for the last 25 years in food processing. It wears you down.

@MilesErickson Yup, exactly the problem. Though, it's been more along the lines of... "you woke me up for THAT?!?!"

speaking of which, the beer's done its job. Time to sack out. G'nite Gents!

Peace!

G'day

@Iain Yeah, I figured it out and already used up all my delete votes for the day. :)

@HopelessN00b yeah - they're hard to come by and easy to use up and the worst of it is until you get to 20k they expire after a few days

Damn. All the more reason to strive for the next 10k rep, I guess.

7:34 AM
So anyone use godaddy web hosting. If someone has scheduled an upgrade of an app, can that be canceled?

Never had occasion to try. You could always ask... or post a question here, even, and maybe that GoDaddy employee guy will chime in.

the web designer apparently setup a joomla site I have never heard about, she is out on her honeymoon for a month, and the site is running a ~3 year old version of joomla and is apparently compromized... Without silly thing like backups...
I found the credentials, and was hoping I could just click the apply update button this morning (16 hours ago) and joomla would be updated, and I could then clean things up...
but it hasn't been updated yet, and I am not sure what I am going to break if I try to manually install.. :(

@Zoredache Jesus. Can you find some way to export any of the data and site content? I know it might have the compramised data in it but you can go through with a fine toothed comb afterwards.
Three years? I thought Joomla was updated quite regularly.

Wow, work only owe me £1600. No wonder my credit card is feeling sorry for itselfg

9:22 AM
@Iain If you took out the "minecraft" bit would it be on-topic?
Although I don't see what his actual issue is.

actually ya

@tombull89 not sure - seems more programmery but upstart is a grey area really - but as you mention it's NARQ

At least we didn't have a "minecraft" tag...

Dan
@tombull89 We do now!

Q: Microsoft CALs for Domain Controller

DamoI am designing a network and I've come to the point of specifying out the number of CALs required for this network. Microsoft licensing has always confused me, it's just not always clear to me. I plan to have 1 2008 std domain controller, another 2008 server (not a domain controller) and 200 Wi...

@tombull89 insta close dupe of

Q: Can you help me with my software licensing issue?

Ben Pilbrow This is a Canonical Question about Licensing. I have a question regarding software licensing. Can the Server Fault community please help with the following. How many licenses do I need Is this licensing configuration valid What CALs do I need to be properly licensed Can I run this product...

Ah, yes.

Dan
"Microsoft licensing has always confused me, it's just not always clear to me."

Bless

Dan
@Iain Haha, I already added near enough that comment

10:01 AM
Douglas Adams summed it up well enough: "There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

Minorly amused. Just watched a student use Total Commander running from a memory stick to access the C: drive, find Solitatire, and start playing a game.

Dan
@tombull89 Not a bad effort. Now break his fingers

We have a couple of students I tend to keep an eye on, he's one of them.
aww he lost his game.

Dan
@tombull89 I can't say too much, I was pretty terrible too

@Dan Same. I got a couple of bans in my time at school, and in the 6th form got a permernant one.
But the difference between when I went to school and me working in a school is that I'll go and chat to them about it - it's easier to talk to them rather than smack them down.

Dan
10:14 AM
Haha, good work. I was kicked out of Sixth form in its entirety, so never hit that point. I hit my proper "Too cool for school" phase in Sixth Form, I just stopped caring about anything.

My favourite moment was not turning up to some IT Key Skills shit lesson for 6 weeks, rocking in, asking for the worksheets for the last 6 lessons and handing in the whole finished pile on the way out
To be fair though, I'd have twatted me as a 16 year old

@Dan haha, epic. I did GCSE ICT thinking I was going to be taking computers apart and web deisgn, but no. It was two years of Office For Dummies.

lol
I had the teacher from hell and quit school so I wouldn't fail
(the less said about uni the better)

Dan
@tombull89 Yeah, did exactly the same. Got a C in the end which, let's face it, was basically a fail. Stupid pointless lesson
I never had the guts to skive before Sixth Form, so I did at least turn up

When we moved into the new school the system wasn't as locked down as it is now, so there was a lot of Halo LAN played by the 6th formers.
I would have loved to be a 6th former at this place.

Dan
Did you have Acorns at school?

10:21 AM
morning all
i used Acorns! man i feel old!

@Dan Can't remember - all I do remember is a load of beige boxes that struggled to run XP (I started secondary school in september 2000) with a number of 95 and 98 boxes all on a Novell network.

desktop publishing on Acorn was awesome!

Dan
@tombull89 Ah, I started in 97 and they were swapped to PC's in 99
@ColdT I know someone who still uses one
@tombull89 Oh man, my college had Novell - that was the last time I saw it in the wild! I miss college, that was a good year

@Dan When clearing out the science prep room in 2003 for a new science block building I found a 5.25" floppy disk.
I went back for an interview this year - now I understood why things were so bad. Money seemed to be spent on the wrong stuff...something like 28 physical servers and the main school cabled in using 100 mbit hubs.

Dan
@tombull89 There's still a huge part of me that misses my early days of IT. Everything is so mental now, 10GB backbones, SAN's etc - I want IDE cables, 10Base2, a chice of CGA or EGA :D

10:26 AM
I almost had a seizure when they told me they took out their last bit of freaking co-ax in 2011.

Dan
@tombull89 Haha, jesus - ironic giving my last post, but I couldn't put up with working somewhere like that

Saying that, I did enjoy college. For some reason, Unreal Tournament was installed on all the ICT lab computers, so most free lessons and break times was spent on that.

that licensing question was sent over from SU and is now closed as a dupe of our licensing question

Dan
@tombull89 Because I did System Support our IT lab was a literal lab with no oversight from the main network. They just gave us a route out to the internet so we could do what we like
Although weirdly, the vast majority of my time was spent playing football which I loved. Despite hating nearly everything about football before that and since

@tombull89 lucky for some, everything was locked down in 2004 in my college

10:29 AM
@Dan Hmm. I don't know what we had, we had access to network drives and internet.
All the machines had removeable had disk caddies so I think if a system was hosed they just swapped the disks with spare.
I never saw any of the college IT team.

Dan
@tombull89 I just remember that in college I was able to, uh, gain access to the examiners guidelines, marking sheets and exam papers :D

@Dan that would explain why you hated college lol

Dan
@ColdT No, I liked college. It was school and Sixth Form where it all went wrong :D

@MDMarra please stop being really aggressive

:p

10:45 AM
@HopelessN00b i guess this defeats the purpose of professional system admins within FAQ!

That's the thing about FAQs... and manuals... and documentation of every sort. The people who need to read it the most are the least likely to ever look at it at all.

Dan
> right this is why we use LAMP and not iis or other microsoft bullsh.ts

I love how it's Microsofts fault that he went mental on a server and broke it

yes i chuckled on that point too lol

Yeah. And I used up all my votes hours ago. It's gonna be a long day.

Dan
@MikeyB That's epic

11:26 AM
Oh, damn. I've been working the latest work catastrophe for 8 hours now... so it's time to take a shower.... and go into work. <cries>

@HopelessN00b truth

11:38 AM
@Iain Can you make sure this get duped to the correct one that I just linked against? serverfault.com/questions/434776/…

This may be a silly question, one I'd probably know off the top of my head if my brains hadn't turned to mush over the last couple of weeks but if we had a canonical answer for how to 'snap' (of one form or another) a whole machine without access to the hypervisor (i.e. VSS for Windows and whatever in Linux) we could point users to that and say "hey make sure you do a snap before you make changes you don't fully understand", I just think it would get them into the habit and lighten our load
Does that make any sense?

Some how i don't believe that formatting solves the problem. Clearly they have found a flaw somewhere to exploit, and if they just restore data from backup and have identical setup, well that just kind of defeats the purpose of formatting.

@pauska That is a better dupe.

hmm snap snap
wheres the hard work in that lol

@ColdT: its better than leaving the system as is. hardening it is a whole different issue

11:42 AM
@Chopper3 I don't think you can snapshot an entire operating system like that..

@ColdT: I am told a good sysadmin works his butt off. A great sysadmin does not

it needs to be done on the layer below, like an hypervisor or a bare-metal backup

@Chopper3 It makes sense, but it won't help. How much does "always take backups" help lighten the load? My guess, none. The people who don't already know it and do it won't bother to read it, and will still post their I nuked my $Server and don't have backups or snaps, halp questions here anyway.

@pauska I think you can with W2K8+12 iirc, again my brain's broken, and you can snap LVM volumes too - I know not everyone uses it though

@JourneymanGeek you have a fair point, its certainly better to format, but doesn't necessarily solve the issue that originally caused it

11:44 AM
@HopelessN00b But my idea would be that every time someone fucks up a system we go "look here, this is a better way" and then that person my use that next time and the whole thing might make the world very slightly better

better to avoid then be stung by it twice

@Chopper3 yeah but you can't snapshot the memory etc. The only thing I can think of is a system state snapshot (Windows calls it system restore), which can be rolled back via the windows boot menu

@ColdT: Well, the next part is when you wished you stayed awake in forensics classes
so you can track down and fix the issue that caused it

@JourneymanGeek A very important lesson to learn. And before you've even started your career, good for you! Don't trust any sysadmin who doesn't display signs of laziness. Laziness in an SA leads to automation, which is nothing but good.

@pauska yeah - that's the kind of thing, I was thinking about that IIS question just ^ up there and how if he'd been able to snap it back he'd be fine

11:46 AM
@Chopper3 I wouldn't be opposed to it, just saying I doubt it'll help.

@HopelessN00b I know, pissing in the wind - but at least it would mean we could answer some dude with one link rather than get into a battle with them

@Chopper3 Yeah, might be worhtwhile when you put it like that... something to mull over punching up next time I get a few free minutes at work.

I'd do it now but my head's not in the right place at. all.

Nor mine. And on that note, it's off to the office... after a night of remote firefighting for the office. Gah.

@HopelessN00b eheh. There's some things one does not learn from school. The biggest thing I get off SF is sysadmin culture

12:07 PM
@ColdT The sort of person that comes here with that kind of question isn't the kind of person qualified to perform the postmortem analysis and figure out "why." So, it's a start. But, you're right. The real answer is; "You're in over your head. Get a professional involved ASAP."

12:29 PM
Hey guys... I hear this is the place for 'Live Support' and that I should forgo asking my question on the main site and instead ask it here :)

<.< ... >.> Who told you this??

@AaronCopley A little birdy...
In all seriousness though... I am wondering if my question is better asked here or on DBA...
I was wondering if AWS can be set up for SQL Server failover so that it brings up an on-demand database server instance if my main database server fails.
Not sure if this is better asked on SF or DBA

Could always ask on SF and if it doesn't get any reponces ask for it to be migrated to DBA. SF may get it the exposure with more users.

@maple_shaft I would definitely try DBA for that. You'll get more specialized and experieinced answers.
It would be on topic here, if you really want to post it here, I just think you'll get better quality answers at DBA.SE on that specific question.

@HopelessN00b @tombull89 I am in estimation mode for management that is too terrified to commit to purchasing application hosting yet, so quality is not my primary concern, just quanity
This is entirely about sizing, and Oracle has got them on the line and is trying to convince them that AWS is a terrible mistake
abandon SQL Server for Oracle database, AWS for Oracle Cloud, lean and mean for enterprise

12:43 PM
Yeah... now I'm not sure which site it would be better on. Pick one, and if you don't get enough attention, flag it for migration to the other one, I say.

absolutely hating oracle db right about now

At this point I don't care anymore... just want them to make a decision, they want to go live in January... don't see how this is going to happen if they dither on stuff like this then just expect me to switch out the database on the application like it takes an hour
ORM frameworks are amazing, but not THAT amazing
@ColdT Why is that?

installing 10g on win2k8r2 is not supported but i need the x86 and x64 architectures of the dll... it works perfectly fine on 2003, just don't think its even supported on 2k8r2

@maple_shaft Heh. Sounds like we work at the same place, based on that. I guess some stupidity's just universal.

@HopelessN00b Seriously... you get paid a LOT of money, probably 1.5 times or more than what I make, and in return you have one fucking responsibility to me and this company... that is to make a fucking decision, and you can't even do that right.

12:50 PM
@maple_shaft Heh. 1.5 times? I seriously doubt our CIO only makes 1.5 times more than me. Spot on about the rest, though.

@maple_shaft I know the feeling. People get paid a lot of money to make decisions and manage. If you can't do that, well, there's the door.

@tombull89 Which would be a tolerable answer if these guys ever got shown the door, huh?

Please... let me do that.... its not like I will have any less stress than I am being put under right now.
I will gladly take all of that money... I will even go back to school to get an MBA if you care about that worthless piece of paper so much

Ah, yes... (removed)... how apt. :)
