Hi everyone
> This room is NOT for 'Live Support',
I am looking to discuss a question that already has an answer. Can I ask about it here?

12:28 AM
"each array of 12 disks has two spares (raid 6), but it is not backed up." what exactly does this mean in terms of the safety of my data being there?

12:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek Are you the same guy from "Tavern at Meta" ?

I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING...
I mean @NikeDattani yeah
@NikeDattani I'm an (elected) moderator on Super User and was appointed moderator on meta.se

@JourneymanGeek I don't understand the ALL CAPS

@NikeDattani is a joke ._.

Was the "I didn't do anything" to me, or to yagmoth555?

But yeah I'm the same guy
@NikeDattani for the "Are you the same guy..."

12:58 AM
okay, I thought I recognized the name from Tavern on Meta. I think you're from Singapore.

I guess this is my first time interacting with you outside of Tavern
There's regulars there, but they're all real SE users too. Not just Tavern/Meta users. However the only one I see regularly on other SE sites, is I think Glorfindel.
Do you happen to know much about RAID disks?

4 hours later…
5:10 AM
@NikeDattani alas no
I don't get to play with enterprise hardware much
used to, a little
@NikeDattani though
Raid is not a backup
Raid saves you when a certain number of disks dies
not from say, randomware or someone going "rm -rf /important_dir/* when he meant *.log.1
so with ENOUGH disks....
you won't have any data loss with up to 2 dead disks - assuming a third dosen't die when you're rebuilding the array (why wait that long?)
but it won't save you from something that's done system level
