@JourneymanGeek how goes ?
Apartment complete ?
Moooostly
Moooved in ?
kinda stuck at the parents for now - the train line home broke, and I'm still mostly here cause they need a ton of help
11:09 AM
Hopefully soon then
Its mostly livable at this time, just needs a bit of personality
Are we drama free between the community and the company (I am scared to look)
oh hell nooooo
After the data dump drama, I think the next round's just about starting up
Ongoing (data dump(ster)) or new stuff ?
... rate limits ?
Company put out a series of marketing blog posts
11:12 AM
oh I have never read the blog
meta.stackexchange.com/q/403266/135565 kinda is a good starting point
Its all quite depressing really :D
> An existential threat looms over the world of human knowledge preservation. That’s not meant to sound dire; it’s simply a fact, and the good news is that it’s very navigable. We believe we can take these bold steps into the changing world and stake a claim where it needs to be staked, on behalf of this community, contributors past and present, and those yet to come.
I mean, LLMs are In the sense that they're parasites locking human knowledge in a black box of wordsalad
Anyway
After reading the beginning of that post I am not sure I have the fortitude to fight my way though the manglement speak
this is the current stupidity I'm enjoying
@user9517 Oh its as thick as the people who think this is a good idea
Cloud Stop not a bad idea
11:19 AM
What's the rest - I haven't built a system in years but I did look inside mine recently after spilling coffee all over the place ( no damage fortunately)
E5 2680V4, 96 gb of ram (sweet spot in terms of cost), MATX case
I'm still using a Ryzen 7 1700 + 64GB from 2017(I think)
Might swap out the PSU, its old, and I didn't test it. Waiting on a cooler (it might be lost in transit)
Oh
this is a 2015 chip
and my MB is a PRIME X370-PRO
I like building PCs :D
and this was probably ~400-500 sgd total. No idea about quality yet, but the components were comically cheap
11:36 AM
I used to but not any more. Having said that I just looked at what my MB supports and getting an R7 5800x looks like a big jump up
Stuff's broadly compatible. Its actually more a matter of bottlenecks
I could probably grab my 3080, plug it into that old server board, and it'd work
Ram's probably changed since then, but PCIe's surprisingly backwards compatible
I use this mainly for running lots of VMs for work the 1700 seems to do the trick
If you got enough cores and ram, sure
one of my linux boxen is a n3550 potato, the other's a n100 nas that's probably good enough but, well, its kinda boring
