I kinda wish people had a "delete my blog comment spam anonymously" option. uuhh with more memory..

NOOOO! I had my streak of answers with points broken. D=
That's what I get for answering softball questions with a hint of snark.

@WesleyDavid That guy showed up to a softball game with a tennis racket.

That guy showed up to a softball game with no pulse and maggots eating his vital organs.

Eww, web filtering via DNS.

Q: Problems encoding an HTA file to run Java+Batch files for DNS server

Joshua CavalucciI'm having a problem coding a .HTA file, and I really need some help. I've been searching all over the place and I can't seem to find what I need to add to this code to make it run. I'm trying to get the HTA script (running javascript) to, utilizing a .BAT file as well, pull information from a li...

1:07 AM
@hobodave Magsafe?

@voretaq7 Completely worth the premium on apple hardware right there.

@ShaneMadden I've knocked laptops over with the new (barrel) magsafe plug though
it can stand a surprising amount of sustained pulling - it really only breaks loose with sharp tugs

@voretaq7 Damn. Hit just the wrong angle?

pulling "out" it lets go really easily, pulling in the direction of the cord it holds on pretty well
the older (fire prone) ones with the cord sticking straight out detached more reliably
but they were prone to wear at the cord joint and would catch fire, so that wasn't an ideal design :)

@voretaq7 Minor details.

1:14 AM
@ShaneMadden you're fine as long as you have no cats!
::looks around his decidedly cat-free apartment::

@voretaq7 Haha, well she hasn't chewed through the girlfriend's macbook power adapters yet..
I don't understand why people always think they need to hack up their hosts file to get apache to listen for a host header. Is there some guide at the top of the google results for "apache config" that suggests doing that or something?

@ShaneMadden "total misunderstanding of how the internet works" should be a close reason.

@voretaq7 Lol, speaking of way-too-simple answers..

A: DNS entries required to get test.example.com to respond to pinging?

Shane MaddenThe A record for test that you already have in there is the one you need. It's working - you might not have waited long enough for the DNS. Pinging test.wendler.mobi [97.107.134.245] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 97.107.134.245: bytes=32 time=75ms TTL=51 Reply from 97.107.134.245: bytes=32 ...

yah. not touching it. i'll be banned for cruelty.
also linking an image instead of a zone file: Grounds for murder

@voretaq7 Seriously. I also like that he used example.com in the text but had the real domain in the image.

1:22 AM
... maybe he can't ping test.example.com? :)

@voretaq7 Indeed, NXDOMAIN. Man, if I owned example.com, I'd have some fun with it.
Curse you IANA!

step 1: run for IANA
step 2: Make board

step 3: wildcard DNS, pointing to 1.1.1.1
step 4: BGP announce 1.1.1.0/24
step 5: ???
step 6: profit!

step 5: bad.example.com

@voretaq7 I like it.

1:29 AM
@ShaneMadden couldn't resist throwing in the literal answer
I need to make a throwaway account for mild snark.
It will probably hit 20k before this one.

@voretaq7 Likely.
@voretaq7 Great answer by the way, heh.

RFCs: For when you absolutely, positively need to be asleep an hour ago.
April 1 RFCs: For when you have a crowd of angry net admins and need to placate them with nerd comedy.
Draft RFCs: For shoving under the door, as the name implies.

@voretaq7 They kinda overdo it. One would be good, but weren't there like 3 this year?

@ShaneMadden idunno, i didn't look this year :-x

Almost every April Fools' Day (1 April) since 1989, the Internet Engineering Task Force has published one or more humorous RFC (Request for Comments) documents, following in the path blazed by the June 1973 RFC 527 entitled ARPAWOCKY, which parodied Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem Jabberwocky. The following list also includes humorous RFCs published on other dates. List of April 1st RFCs ; : :: A parody of the TCP/IP documentation style. For a long time it was specially marked in the RFC index with "note date of issue" because some people apparently took it seriously. ; : ; : (see ...

1:34 AM
@ShaneMadden hmmm
the one that updated RFC 1149 is of VITAL IMPORTANCE
otherwise what do I do with all my avian carriers? I don't have a cat!
"Unlike the current IP
transmission standard, packets created by the IP over Burrito Carrier
service are vulnerable to infection during transmission. Infected
packets will usually be detected two to four hours after the packet
is destroyed."

1:53 AM
@voretaq7 Eww.
@voretaq7 Also I think that DNS guy's confused. I pasted in his answer proof that it was working..

or he's REALLY trying to ping test.example.com

@voretaq7 He's trying to DDoS IANA's name servers. Unsuccessfully.

maybe if he sends ONE MORE PACKET?

@voretaq7 Maybe from a different system on his LAN. That makes it distributed, right?

Waste Of Money, Brains And Time

what a terrible day
that 4 foot fall killed my hard disk, and my laptop can no longer open unless I use a paperclip, and the dvd drive no longer exists :(

@hobodave Bright Side: At least the screen is intact?

2:31 AM
for now
i want to put my fist through it

no, don't do that
I had an EVP who threw a pen through his once
Apple does NOT repair that under warranty

An electronic voice phenomena attacked your MacBook? Dude, call discovery channel. You can get your own TV show.

@WesleyDavid Please, DON'T encourage them.
It'll just wind up migrating to the channel formerly known as SciFi, and then they'll cancel my Warehouse 13 too.
Cockbiters.

But they don't know they're dead. :'(

That's the saddest part - watching the channel try to cling to life!

2:42 AM
I can't decide between a 13" macbook air or a 15" pro

RANDOM QUESTION TIME!
How many EVPs from those lame ass ghost shows do you think could be duplicated on a wax cylinder recorder, versus ones that are just because their recording equipment is SHIT?

I'm in the same place, @hobodave

@hobodave what kind of work do you do on it? Is it a desktop replacement?

I don't have a desktop. It was my primary work machine, but my office finally bought me an iMac, so I really don't use it all that often anymore.

@voretaq7 I always assumed it was overzealous interns using Adobe SoundBooth and for the first time drawing a paycheck for something other than mowing lawns.

2:43 AM
I'm aware of the up and downsides, I'm just fretting over the price

@hobodave MBA is a 2-3 year machine. MBP is a 3-4 year machine -- 5 if you stretch it with RAM
Conversely MBP looks like it's mid-cycle for updating while the air just got a spit and polish
Apple: Cant win. Just keep buying so my stock goes up :)

I got in on Apple around $150
foolishly didn't snap up a ton when it dropped below $100 in early 09

I got in on apple around $75-80.
Unfortunately I was flat-ass-mothefucking-broke back then so I didn't get a lot, picked up more here and there after major drops

heh
I went "all in", it's worked well for me
not really all in, but like 75%
diversification is for pussies

@hobodave It's certainly panning out

Q: Adjusting Linux Group Access

mcfan123I have created a group in RHEL with one user in it. This user will need full rwx access to /home/anotheruser/ ,recusively. How do I change the user/group permission to allow that user/group to rwx in /home/anotheruser/ If I do a vi group in /etc/ this is what is says: usergroup:x:505:user123 ...

HALP.

"do I have to be in root? Any specific place as to where I should execute them?".... does he think he's talking about / or the root user?

btw I did have a magsafe @voretaq7, it was just not optimally positioned

@ShaneMadden I fear he is of the cut and paste variety. If I pasted enough stuff around it I could probably get them to execute dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1M count=1

it was bent 180 degrees and underneath the laptop

3:12 AM
@hobodave that's what I figured. The new barrel-style connector, right?

@voretaq7 Let's not find out.

no the old style, the box
and half the laptop was hanging off the shelf
stupid me

@ShaneMadden oh but WHY NOT? Some people need to be escorted out of the profession in a nice white coat with big buckle straps while screaming "THE INTERNETS MADE ME! THEY MAAAAAAADE ME!"
that's an unfortunate series of precarious collapses then - the barrel ones have knocked my MBP over a few times b/c I pulled along the axis of the cord

what do you think I can get for a lightly banged up early 2008 mbpro?
if I replace the drive, I'm thinking I could get $500-700

@hobodave screen's still good? You can probably get a few hundred on eBay as-is.

3:16 AM
hell I think I have a spare 320 sitting around that I turned into an external hdd
I recently replace the keyboard, so there are no worn keys
not sure I can fix the bend near the superdrive though

probably a few bucks for the keyboard as a part too

@voretaq7 Hmm. If we can get it on video, then I can support it.

@ShaneMadden excellent! BRING ME THE RECORDING LART!

Q: SPF - should I implement?

Manca WeeksA request has been made by a web developer for our domain DNS records to include SPF TXT records. I found differing opinions on this out there... Any comments or insights you can offer will be highly appreciated. I know this is not an empirical question per se - but I would appreciate your subje...

Are there really people out there who say "don't implement SPF"? If so, I just put words in their mouths.

there's no good reason not to
the only reason I can think of is "I'm a lazy ass domain administrator and I don't even know what SPF is"

3:23 AM
@hobodave Yeah. He said he found "differing opinions", which makes me wonder.

silly
it's completely passive and harmless, hell most MTAs will deliver it anyway

@hobodave I always just softfail stuff. Let the spam filter take it into account.

@ShaneMadden Don't implement SPF. It's dark voodoo.

@WesleyDavid TXT records are the devil's resource type.

SPF sucks
but
it's a benign suck

3:27 AM
@voretaq7 comically enough, openspf.org is down right now. I was trying to find a choice quote from there for my answer :(

@ShaneMadden yeah I know
I'm hoping it's up by the time they check the answer :)
Google's cache should have it

@voretaq7 3.. 2.. 1.. "SITE NO UP. I IMPLEMENT DOMAINKEYS INSTEAD"

@ShaneMadden DKIM is an ass in the pain
still haven't gotten around to it :)

@voretaq7 I've honestly never messed with it

Someone else please Please PLEASE visit this question and convince this guy to READ ABOUT HOW PERMISSIONS WORK before he fucks up his universe: serverfault.com/questions/301889/adjusting-linux-group-access

3:31 AM
@voretaq7 Eek. Not sure if I want to touch that one..

I want to take away his root password :-/

@voretaq7 "Here's a chroot for you to play in until you pass this written aptitude test"

@ShaneMadden "Here's a blunt stick. Try not to hurt yourself with it."

@voretaq7 Also effective.

When a guy says "I'm messing with groups!" and then says "What's that funny number in usergroup:x:505:username" makes me not feel so bad about myself.

3:39 AM
@WesleyDavid when a guy says "What's a umask??" in not-so-many-words I weep.

@voretaq7 Why up so late and on the 'puter?
I'm not used to seeing you here at this time.

general insomnia

Oh, and @voretaq7, of course you made the 10K challenge. Expect prizes. Pay no attention to the powder in the envelope. Just inhale deeply.

@WesleyDavid tasty tasty anthrax?

@WesleyDavid Can I do a 20k challenge instead? I'm just barely on pace for it ;)

3:45 AM
@ShaneMadden So you want twice the bacterium? Whatever bakes your cake. Sure.

@WesleyDavid Solid.

Wait, no... I'll just mailbomb you.

@WesleyDavid use thermite

Oh man thermite. <3
I like it almost as much as fresnal lenses.
Ever melted concrete in 0.5 seconds?

demo'd it going through an engine block in college.

Q: Trying to GRANT ASP.NET access to sample Database from my book

Super DaveI am trying to set up this book to run database apps under IIS, and GRANT ASP.NET access to the database. Saw that question. My response: "Eww. Words. close tab "

@WesleyDavid Yeah. I squinted a bit and he's trying to grant rights to a user that doesn't exist because it's some copy-pasted script.

@voretaq7 One word: Tannerite.

exploding...targets?

Legal explosive. And yes, people like to shoot it.

3:52 AM
thermite is perfectly legal: it's not an explosive :-)
it's not even hazardous until ignited

Thermite not being an explosive is its primary fault.
Being able to weld trollys to the track, however...

My good deed for the night, editing that beast.

which means if I get stupid in about 30 minutes y'all know what happened.

4:03 AM
@voretaq7 How will we be able to tell?

@WesleyDavid are you referring to some of the recent questions?

Haw.

mostly by the drool…

So I'm getting job offers from places I don't want to live. =(

@voretaq7 And the dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda answers to all of the questions on the first page?

4:05 AM
@voretaq7 "Your question tastes like pain and suffering. Take this pill and see what I mean..."

Although one possible big contract might come up. Of course, it's in a topic I'm foggy on, but judging by ServerFault questions, incompetence is no big hurdle to doing a job and getting paid for it.

@ShaneMadden naw, when I'm high my answers tend more toward "Here, hold this wire."

@WesleyDavid Getting involved in the 8-to-5 game, eh?

@voretaq7 Mine tend more toward "WE CAN'T STOP HERE!! THIS IS BAT COUNTRY!!!"

@WesleyDavid It's only a little incompetent! It's still good! It's still good!
@WesleyDavid BATS?????
BATSHIT CRAZIES you mean!

4:06 AM
@voretaq7 As your attorney, I advise you to always run as root, never have a generic kernel and put all your DNS records on one VPS hosted in the philippines.
3

@WesleyDavid where are you getting offers?

Philippians?
Thanks Chrome.

@WesleyDavid ... I never have a generic kernel.

So far, a software company in DC and an amusement park in the Ohio valley.
A nudge towards a college in Ohio
An offer from a security company in LA.
I'd do the LA thing actually.

@WesleyDavid Well, you know Paul had a lot of good things to say to the church of Philipi on the subject of VPS hosting. "Thou shalt not run a shared instance" or something...

NO GOOD CAN COME OF THIS! MUAHAHAHAHA!

Oh, and some folks are encouraging me to apply for the StackExchange SysAdmin position, but I think I don't have a chance.
Plus... NYC... snow, cold... I have seasonal depression. I don't think I can handle it.
Ohio was bad enough for five years.
shudder

@WesleyDavid Meh, give it a shot ;)

Last winter, my first in AZ, I was so absurdly happy and energetic I felt like I needed to get shot with a tranq dart just so I could chill out. Didn't know it was possible to be so upbeat.
Also didn't know how badly dark and cold affect me.

@WesleyDavid apply. I would but I'm at a point in my life where I don't want to make any changes just yet

@voretaq7 You live nearby, right?

4:13 AM
@WesleyDavid ya I'm on LI

@WesleyDavid I actually like cold weather. But then I used to live in Vegas. But I also like warm/hot weather because then women wear less clothing outside. I'm so confused.

@Holocryptic I hate hot weather. I don't care what other people are wearing, if my balls are sweating there's no way I can be happy.

@voretaq7 I'm tri-state illiterate. What's LI?

@WesleyDavid long island

@voretaq7 hahaha, there is that

4:14 AM
points at csup output
so. many. ports.
MAKE IT STOP!

@voretaq7 Wow, such a contrast. I can handle heat like no one I know. It literally has no effect on me. 115F? Not a problem. Humidity however, that's a big problem.

@WesleyDavid yeah, in NY there is no such thing as heat without humidity

And yes, I sweat like ice cold coke on a Louisiana porch in August. Sweaty people tend to handle hot weather well.

the temperature curve and humidity curve are identical. When it's 115F outside it's also 115% humidity. You can fill a glass by waving it around in the air.

Drippy balls = happiness.

4:15 AM
I couldn't help myself

@WesleyDavid drippy balls = "dear jesus am I going to have to wear old people pampers to not sweat through my slacks??"
also, i wish I could pin that!

@voretaq7 Yes, foggy butt is pandemic here. No one notices that you look like you just shit yourself.

I also have a high tendency to sweat. It makes for good times in the office.

I have a friend that lives near Mount Sinai. going to CUNY to get his second PhD.

high quality slacks and undergarments are pretty much necessary if you wear suits in NY during summer.
does anyone else on here actually use fountain pens, or am I the only anachronism?

4:19 AM
Can you just sheep dip yourself in Ban liquid roll-on? I imagine that might spur a personal thermal crisis, though.

My only problem with the new gig is that I can't wear cargo pants willy nilly anymore.

I love fountain pens, but I only have a Schaeffer starter set.
I used to do calligraphy as a kid.

@WesleyDavid RAAR! DOME MANHATTAN AND AIR CONDITION IT!

@voretaq7 The hell is a fountain pen? The sharp thing that tears paper you have to refill with ink manually?

@Holocryptic if your pen tears paper you have a shit pen, shit paper, or both :)
even my dip pens don't tear paper

4:21 AM
oh, the sexual innuendo running through my head right now... I'm a bad person.

@WesleyDavid which Sheaffer set do you have?
@Holocryptic . . . SLAP

@voretaq7 That just made it worse

@voretaq7 Let me go check. I got it at 16 because my uncle never used anything but Schaeffer pens. I'm kinda into crafts like that. Really anything to do with paper. I'm a bit of an origami nut. Like folding. Got into paper airplanes. It's a nice tactile thing to do when not 'putering.

I have no artistic talent
@Holocryptic kinky.
glance at star wall … yeah, I'm a bad influence on late night discussions.

@voretaq7 I leave that to other people. I don't understand "modern" art at all, and wonder how people make money in it. Then I think about all the hippies taking art classes and laugh

@WesleyDavid That's neat. Thats all just folding, right? No glue?

I thought all geeks used Fisher Space Pens. The factory is just outside of Vegas, so on our recent trip we went and bought a few - I finally got an original astronaut AG-7 pen: spacepen.com/originalastronautmodels.aspx It's very nice, heavy and solid.

@Holocryptic Yep, just folding. No glue or scissors.
@voretaq7 Here's a shot of the cheap-o starter set I have:
As of 60 seconds ago.

@Ward ahhhh, Boulder City. There was an awesome ice cream place we used to go to there.

4:31 AM
@Ward I had an AG-7 a while back, it's still around here somewhere. nice pen, well balanced

I want to get a Conway Stewart.

@WesleyDavid calligraphy set?

@voretaq7 Yes, remnants of my grade school calligraphy days.

those are some very broad nibs :-)

Always wanted to develop a draftsman's handwriting and then a flowing calligraphy.
Very broad, yes. =)
As it is I'm going through a handwriting change now.

4:32 AM
@WesleyDavid draftsman's writing is easy
takes a few years of practice -- doing landscaping work helps

@Holocryptic We pretty much only go there for the space pens. The last time we were there was in 2006, just before Paul Fisher died. He gave us each a bullet pen.

@Ward surf.transworld.net/files/2010/05/image007.jpg He looks alive and well, and I think I hate his guts already...

@Ward Oh, that Paul Fisher

4:37 AM
As weird as it sounds, I really like thin characters, so used to write with the smallest tipped pens I could find. 0.5 mm or so
Eyeballing a 0.18mm Mars matic 700.
Of course, it slices all but the hardiest of papers, so not really practical for writing at anything more than a few letters per minute. =)

@WesleyDavid heh, I think those are ugly personally - the blue is the only one I like

Yes, the blue is the only one that doesn't make my eyes vomit.
@voretaq7 What attracted you to fountain pens? A older family member?

I thik I'm going to attempt to sleep. Or toss around the bed pretending to get to sleep.

I do most of my writing with a converted Brause #76 dip pen nib
my handwriting is substantially better with fountain/dip pens because I have to write slower and don't dig in to the paper as much

Ahh, gotcha.
Oooo, the thunders are happening.

G'day

how're you ?

Doing well, chugging through tasks, trying to be better at life than I was the day before.
How're you on a fine Wednesday (as I end Tuesday)

It's looking fine atm

7:39 AM
@Iain, there is one way to get IP information from a device that should work on every platform...
Query snmp...

@Zoredache :)

It is one method that should work everywhere. It will just be extremely painful to use that method...

I think he wants a cross platform xyzzy command that magics up the ip address
tbh once you move away from linux with it's faily predictable eth0,1 etc then finding out what the interface name is becomes a bigger problem

@Iain, well snmpwalk would do that given the correct options, and having snmpd setup.

8:06 AM
Do you know of a simple to use tool that will do a keystone correction in a image?

no, sorry

oh, and 'other then photoshop' is implied. I don't want to have to sell a kidney... :p

Morning.
@Zoredache: I think GIMP has a perspective tool that might do the job, though you might have to crop the edges afterwards to get it rectangular.

@pauska Got a budget? And what you going to have to put in it? Switches, servers, both, ups?

@tombull89 "budget".. I can buy anything reasonable priced
going to put a new EMC san in it.. and pdu's
and probably some switches. bitches love them switches.

A power distribution unit (PDU) is a device fitted with multiple appliance outlets designed to distribute electric power, especially to computers and networking equipment located within a data center. There tend to be two major types: heavy floor-mounted PDU devices which take main feeds and distribute into a handful of smaller feeds. The second type of PDU is the rack-based PDU, sometimes called Smart-PDU, PDU, or Power Strip by IT professionals. Rack-based PDUs are used for taking high voltage and current and reducing it to more common and useful levels, for example from 240 ...
we already have a APC ups, so I'm tempted to get a APC rack with smart PDU's
the CTO lives on the other side of the world, so it would be nice to give him the ability to power cycle stuff

ah we've got something similar, just with out all the control interfaces
all our racks are hp, all but one of the UPS are APCs.

something like that would be cool

ah right.

expensive as hell though
@tombull89 ??

don't worry I'm getting it mixed up with something else :/
I'd had two days off so today is my "monday"

10:20 AM
@pauska We've got those PDU's you linked, they're sweet

just looking at one of the blades...

Q: HTTPS only on OpenBSD 4.9?

Dusan SukovicI've tried this example from OpenBSD http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq10.html#HTTPS it works fine, but with Mozilla Firefox 6.0 it's possible to use both http nd https, while I want to force users to use only HTTPS. How Can I achieve this? Thanks!

Q: How to know what user belongs to what ip on debian

Lucas Kauffmanis there a way to get an overview of users logged in on my server and the ip they are connecting from ? I have the IP already, I want the user that is associated with it :)

First question I've seen that has a valid, one-character answer.

@SmallClanger Did I get it right?
