I haven't been asked this, but, hey, it could happen. Businesses ask for five year plans for long-range planning reasons. And sometimes, IT gets asked this as well. And IT is what you call a fast-moving field, and five years is a long time. So. Now what?At WWU, if you had asked me that I probably could have given you one. Our core mission doesn't change, educate students, thought the details of

I'm deeply conflicted about this question:
2
Q: Five year IT Plan

MasterOfNothingMy company has asked our department for a five year plan. This is hard for us to conceive since we are a smallish shop and mostly reactionary to peoples needs. Does anyone have any advise for creating a plan such as this?

It's the one time I wish the SE engine wasn't what it is.

I've done a 5 year plan. Completely out the window after about a year.

1:18 AM
@ShaneMadden I agree, best you can do is to have a 1 year plan

1:44 AM
That's probably because you're planning the wrong things. Do you have a fixed (or at least planned) rotation schedule for servers and networking equipment on a long-term basis? Or is everything an as-needed firefighting operation?

I work for a small business outsource IT company. We work for MANY small businesses. They look at IT purely as a cost to their business that often they wish they could do with out. Not ALL our businesses are like that, but getting them to purchase a server that they NEED is hard enough, more or less get them to plan for the life cyle of a server.

Just because it isn't easy doesn't mean it isn't important.

I've seen all sorts of answers to that. Probably the best one was someone that their DC would litterally crash 2 or 3 times a month. They kept asking us to fix it. This was on a server they probably had for close to 12 years. They kept telling us that they didn't have the budget to afford a new one.
I guess that's one of the disadvantages to outsourcing your IT. You don't relaly get a stake at the budgeting table

2:02 AM
@womble In that organization, there were lifecycles for all devices. The things that we couldn't plan for were the things that blew up the plan - managers taking over a department and reorganizing everything, high-ups getting enamored with a saleperson's pitch.

2:15 AM
@Nixphoe 12 years? They couldn't afford the upgrade to a TRS-80?

:) Some times small business owners have strange ways of rationalizing things. Having to spend money on their business, even if it is to make it better, means... less money that they bring home for their expensive house and toys

A netbook would have been faster
12 years ago now would be a P3-600
The cheapest possible Dell is $300 and 2.2GHz

1 hour later…
3:47 AM
Ok serverfault admins ... I have a Win7Ult64 laptop and a WinXP32 that I want to network together. What do I need to do? They don't seem to see each other over the wireless.

@jcolebrand /me votes to migrate question to superuser

Think so? I figured you guys would know faster :\

Heh =)

Which room is that?

Windows Vista+ has new sharing features that snub XP and prior
I'd go into more detail, but I have to dart away from the 'puter
I've found an article that might help though: howtogeek.com/howto/9040/…
@ me if that doesn't help
But yes, SuperUser will likely already have the answer. They're pretty sharp there

3:53 AM
Root Access ...

Which is total garbage because no user, no matter how super they are, should ever have root access.
2
Lusers.

lol

4:08 AM
@WesleyDavid My favorate run command is ncpa.cpl . That works on EVERY version of windows, at least 2000 and above. I had to learn that after Vista came out because it would take like 12 MILLION mouse clicks to get there via GUI

4:40 AM
@Nixphoe you bastard. You should make that like a comment tagline or something. That should be your frickin username.

5:01 AM
@Nixphoe Yeah, I saw a Microsoft tech support person do that about two years ago and never forgot it.

6:00 AM
what do you mean they can't see each other? Do they get an IP from the same dhcp scope, can you ping one from the other. Have you permitted the kind of access you want through the firewalls, have you tested using IPs \\192.168.1.1 instead of names...

@Zoredache Their webcams aren't facing each other
;)
There's an idea, actually. IP-over-QR-codes-scanned-at-high-speed-by-a-webcam.
Like good ol infrared, but even more useless!

G'day
If you have the rep please go and vote on this synonym serverfault.com/tags/solaris-10/synonyms
this isn't SF, is it SO ? serverfault.com/questions/301088/…

I think it fits in the just close it. It isn't a great question.

6:51 AM
@Zoredache works for me

You might just want to manually retag those, or ask on meta to have that created. Given the small number of questions I doubt there is enough people who pay attention to synonyms to actually get it created via a vote.
So I cannot vote for it, because I do not have 5 answers in that tag that have upvotes.
as far as I can tell only you and voretaq7 could even cast a vote.

that's the real annoyance about the system

7:10 AM
I spammed the front page. It should all be gone now. In a few hours it should not longer even be offered as a valid tag in the auto-complete...

:( there goes my one and only (vague) chance to get a synonymizer badge

oh my... I just did something silly and commented on a insane youtube video.
Now I am going to be even worse and ask a question on english.se.

I would consider one hundred thirty five to be abnormal

But my algebra teacher strongly was of the opinion that if you use 'and' it implied what followed was after a decimal.

has the review link disappeared leaving || for anyone else ?

Good morning!

@Iain - why yes, yes it has, now that you mention it

it only appeared a couple of days ago too as for 10ks it was a tab in tools - now we have neither

weird huh

where's the right place to ask why a question was moved from serverfault to superuser?

Q: Help with Windows Perfmon

eugeneKi want to check how much Windows Server performs using application that can access data perfmon can by the same names. Generally i want to check how CPU, memory, network and HDD performs. What counters should i check and what are the advisable values for those counters.

meh. I'm not gonna bother meta with it. I was just curious about why this specific q was moved - it seems like a very good server q to me.
Although I guess I'm a little surprised that no 'why we moved it' reason is given

9:01 AM
it's a very poor question, It's almost certaintly not from a professional. I guess it was a close call SU or closed

I edited it (after the move). yes the grammar was poor. the base question, imho, is not

9:24 AM
I moved it because a number of users had asked for it to be - very often mods are really just reacting to what the community are requesting - it's not like mods know everything about everything so we can't always judge every request on its technical merits

choppertars nearly gone! \o/

Funnily enough I was thinking of changing my icon soon

Son's clearly been biten by the SE bug, he's barely off the site he's posting on :)

pfo
how old is he?

15

pfo
and you let him grow up as a computer geek :) ?

he's not the geek I initially thought he was going to be, plays bass, rows for his school and talks to girls, really thought he was going the way-of-geek for a few years but he's too tall and good looking I think, plus educationally he's too much of an all-rounder, I was only good at geek classes myself

pfo
probably better this way :P
you can still become a geek later in life when it doesn't impact your life that much.

9:46 AM
yeah, he loves history and geography - so he'll probably be a teacher or barista

pfo
heh
i doo love that too but more from a geeky POV :P
@Chopper3 i stumbled upon this question of yours recently and what you could do about the ESXis try the following: Set ESX4is link failure detection mechanism to beacon probing instead of link detection only: kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/…
if every ESXi host is on one or more switches this should protect from the fault you described

which question?

Q: A better multipathing system

Chopper3We're lucky, every server we have has multiple NICs/HBAs/CNAs connected to multiple switches and this approach has kept our platform up on numerous occasions. That said we ran into a problem last week that I'm not sure how to fix. We had a switch that was carrying a good chunk of our traffic cra...

personally I'd never put any box on a single switch

pfo
i also never do that
or try to avoid like the plague

9:56 AM
ah yes, think we tried that - it didn't work in that scenario as we have inter-switch links for VSS so both switches see all beacons but it didn't recognise that the links from one switch was down - I think anyway, it was a while ago - cheers anyway

pfo
ah VSS is a kind of a blockere here
it will even become more common in the years to come
not vss maybe but cross-stack LACP

yeah, something like that, back in a bit, got a long dull conf call :(

10:55 AM
Morning folks

@ShaneMadden Sure, you don't try and plan everything out to 5 years. That's where people get in trouble (or disheartened) and say "well, I can never get these plan things right so let's just not bother at all", which is a pity.
@Nixphoe Were you contracted to provide long-term planning for them? If not, it's not really your problem not to provide a plan.

12:01 PM
@womble That's exactly it. Actually because of that converstation I've brought up to my managers at least the idea of throwing a life cycle for new equipment out there so our clients are at least aware "about" how long the server's life cycle is and how much money-ish it's costing them per year
New Badge? Excavator

@Nixphoe Yeah, got that this AM too...

12:18 PM
Guess I haven't been around the block long enough to get that one. So now I have to find a good quesiton that doesn't have an answer and could use some clarification
I guess the badge is already working it's intended purpose
My job loves keeping http management enabled on our firewalls. I love disabling it and forcing https. BWAHAHAHA

Holy fuck, I'm embarrassed for this bloke, that this is going to be out there on the Internet forever with his name on it:

Q: Bind9 refusing to start

Phill FernandesI am experiencing issues getting Bind9 to start. Output from "tail /var/log/messages": Aug 15 06:50:30 iceweb kernel: [125973.964184] type=1400 audit(1313409030.779:50): apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" parent=7227 profile="/usr/sbin/named" name="/var/lib/named/etc/bind/named.conf" ...

I tried to be nice.

I don't understand *nix so much, I don't get it. I'm sure I would ask the quesiton the same way
lol

Ok. What'd that do with my link to "/review"?

12:52 PM
@womble Didn't someone else recently have the exact same problem? I swear I just saw a question like that a few weeks ago.

'morning folks
Did I piss any diamonds off this weekend? I went through and flagged about 40 things between Sat and Sun.
I can't stand Jeff's stance on the chat link
0
A: Chat side-bar not showing up on Server Fault

Jeff AtwoodIt's also linked on the bottom in the footer, so scroll down on your page. And it is linked on meta in the sidebar.

They borked the link to "/review" too, used to be in "/tools" which is linked at the top for 10k+ users... Now there's no link I can find, and I don't like the context switch penalty between keyboard and mouse.

1:08 PM
I'm not too fussed about the link going from the top, although I would still like to see a link to chat in the sidebar on all sites, not just meta.

Replacing a link with a totally UNrelated link at random intervals makes zero sense

morning everyone...

morning

today's assignment is to re-ip about 35 switches and routers without breaking anything...

enjoy
lol

1:13 PM
@SpacemanSpiff Yikes; I hope they're only L2 or similar...
Otherwise that sounds like off-hours duty.

yep, L2 mostly
it took me a little while to figure out that the old 3500 series L2 switches won't let you even bring up 2nd L3 interface
junos lets me bind two IP's to any interface or sub-interface, don't see a technique for that on cisco

I just tried the LOPSA signup link and it tells me the server couldn't be found... O_o
Second link in the email was apparently borked.
Other one seemed okay.
Although the wording of their privacy opt-outs is kinda borked too.

Hi everyone.. back from vacation :)

1:29 PM
Hi @Pauska.

Hrmm... anyone know how to break out of a telnet session when you're connected from one cisco box to another?

You're in nested telnet and ^] breaks out of the top one?

that doesn't seem to work

@pauska It's still August, what are you doing back?

surprised the first device hasn't killed the session yet

1:32 PM
@SpacemanSpiff ctrl+dropkick

okay, mashing ctrl + shift + 6 + x in random smashings seems to have done the trick

@ChrisS Only two weeks vacation, taking another two on october and one at christmas

+1 for mashing. :)

@SmallClanger - they ordered me a replacement keyboard for this laptop the day it arrived, as a spare

Most telnet clients use Ctrl+] as the escape char, though some I've heard use Ctrl+[ or Ctrl+B...

1:36 PM
What do you guys think of google buying moto?

I once had a Macbook pro due to a USB glitch (that our helpdesk refused to call into apple) start answering YES to every question during a NetWare to SUSE migration, since there was no cable to yank my fist through the keyboard shut it down as quickly as possible.
it also split the motherboard in half

@MarkM Moto used to be the Cadillac of mobile devices, then they got complacent and have been milking the cash cow the last few years, maybe Google will return them to their previous 'glory'...

Doesn't moto make the chips Apple uses in the ipad/iphones?
or did they sell that off to someone else

Otherwise it seems like it fits with Google's "dominate the search/ad worlds by giving customers easy access to our services" mantra.
@MarkM They're only buying Moto Mobile (Cell Phones et al)

got ya

1:41 PM
Moto is definitely being bought by the Googles?

maybe they'll de-clusterfuck Android finally

Official "Google Phones" where google controls the hardware and software from start to finish should be great. The biggest problem with Android is that so many low/mid range phones run it poorly and the iphone's experience blows it away.

@BartSilverstrim Yes, Moto Mobility is.

Hopefully having legit phones developed and manufactured start-to-finish from google will give android the polish that it needs.

@MarkM - Yes exactly

1:44 PM
Gotta wonder what Samsung is thinking though
since they are so cozy with android

I'm sure they'll develop all new models so those of us with the old Motorola boxes have to buy new ones :|
I'm jaded, my Droid2 just has not been good to me.

Right now I have a samsung transform (free from work). gotta say, it sucks balls.
It falls into that "low end poor experience" category.

Hate Samsung phones, my colleague loves them though

The galaxy line is pretty sweet
but the transforms cost us like $30 so thats what we get through our business plan
since the CIO doesn't want to spring for Evos for 250 lines :)
(cheap bastard)

@MarkM I doubt Samsung is too worried yet. They make cheap phones, not nice phones. Unless Google changes Moto's target audience...

1:48 PM
They have a fledgeling tablet line still that moto is going to compete with directly
And not all of the samsung phones are cheapos, just most.

Plus Google almost certainly will not use Moto Mobile to make much profit directly; they're almost certainly going after the Seach and Ad traffic. In that context, Samsung making and selling Android phones just puts more money in Google's pockets.

yeah

I dislike cheaply constructed anything... Samsung phones included.

agreed

Moto does some chip work for Apple, but Apple has been migrating over to their own chip facility and Intel.

1:51 PM
@BartSilverstrim Intel for tablet/phone?

Rumor is they're moving to A chips.

They already are on A5, I thought.
But the A5 isn't made by apple, it's just apple branded
Just googled it. The A5 is made by Samsung

There's a chip fab maker they bought not long ago.
I thought I heard they're manufacturing some and they outsource it as well.

Ya, i remember they bought them too. Not sure what they're actually doing with them though

Meh.. I have a Samsung Galaxy S II, and I dont like it
its super fast, but too clunky
its also way less eye-candy than HTC with its Sense GUI.. especially when it comes to important business things like a calendar on the front screen

1:57 PM
There are also rumors that there is/was an A5 based Macbook Air in Apple R&D
And there were dealings with Intel regarding the possibility that Macs will migrate to the A architecture in the next 5-10 years.
When the processor is powerful enough for desktop use, I guess.

Maybe we could run RiscOS on them

2:11 PM
I've got a Samsung microwave, does that count? can't ssh into it but have tried putty, went very sticky

I mean, it makes sense to do ARM in notebooks, especially airs if they transition to IOS. Lion has all of the best iOS features integrated into it. It's the next logical step.
Plus, a lion is the king of the jungle, so they're kind of fucked if they need another cat name for the next version.

Zenoss is quite good at stress testing disks... :)
always fun to see just how many datapoints you can monitor before it starts to puke

@pauska I read that HTC is scaling back Sense, since it eats up so much RAM. That was keeping a lot of their phones from going to 2.3
So, if you want to upgrade, the 2.3 ROM won't have Sense included.

@MarkM The problem is that their old phones have too little internal memory, and you cant put Sense (or other critical applications) on the SD card

It might have been upgrading from 2.3 to 3.0 actually, I don't remember the specifics

2:16 PM
Nah it was the 2.2 -> 2.3 upgrade
I think they solved it by stripping out some irrelevant stuff

All I know is that LauncherPro made my shitty transform feel like a whole new phone.

they removed 3 apps.. cant remember wich

I could never go back to the stock launcher

stock on sense or galaxy? I like the sense one, but I'm using launcherpro on my galaxy

The stock android launcher

2:17 PM
Not a member of the Droid army, so I can't really comment.

oh yeah, thats horrible
I like the way you can scroll the launcher

I haven't used a senseUI phone
yeah

Wife dropped her droid system even though she kind of liked it, but then moved to iOS and preferred that. I hated it from the start.

I like that the dock is 4 apps and follows you to other desktops
I wish I could have an iPhone :/

too bad it doesnt alter the main button on the galaxy.. if I double-tap it (wich i often do in my pocket etc) some kind of voice activation bullshit pops up

2:18 PM
Damn Sprint

I keep asking people to throw my droid for me, step on it, whatever, nobody will do it

kind of annoying when that robot woman starts to say "unrecognized blablabla" through my jeans

its all the excuse I need to put an iphone on my credit card

haha

im considering switching to HTC Sensation (no idea what its called in US with your stupid branding scheme)

2:19 PM
lol
probably the verizon super amazing droiding robot phone v2
or something similar

Verizon still on strike?

looks pretty nice

I don't hear anything about Verizon's strike...it's like, "Oh, yeah, same level of customer service with or without employees...weird..."
2

my choices from work are 1) blackberry curve 2) samsung transform
both are shitty options, but i chose the shitty transform option

2:21 PM
@MarkM: Wow...that's like choosing between being branded with a hot iron and kicked in the nuts by a kangaroo.
3

Yeah, I went with the kangaroo
the initial pain is a bit more, but it doesn't leave a permanent mark

transform == galaxy (1) ?
oh god it has a keyboard
eww.

@pauska It's got an 800mhz ARM v5 cpu with 128MB RAM

I want a HTC EVO Shift... But refuse to pay that much for monthly service.

it's about as cheap as you can get from sprint
on the plus side, i dont pay a cent for my phone or service
so i cant complain a whole lot

2:25 PM
Would the solution as being somewhat proposed be to have a redundant "cloud" host do the DNS, and point their DNS to primarily their live data center, and if the data center is unavailable point it to their "cloud backup" server(s)?
So the DNS would always point to the outsourced balancer in the third party network, and make a quick cutover to the virtual servers when necessary?
Because if their data center is the point of failure they couldn't use load balancing to point DNS somewhere else.
But he keeps bringing up TTL on DNS records...shouldn't be much of an issue if it's hosted in an already redundant provider that has their VM's on standby.
Am i picturing that correctly?

@BartSilverstrim You'd have to drop the TTL to a small value (60 seconds or so) to allow it to expire quickly.

Hello folks
Apple patented anything with a rectangular shape and a touch screen. I guess that kills nearly any device in the past 3-5 years

Link?

@mikeyb: why would you need to change it if the DNS hosting was done at the cloud provider's balancer?

2:40 PM
The DNS name would always point to their (hopefully redundant) provider, so they can re-point it.
Although anyone caching the DNS translation would be a problem.
That's probably the point I was skimming over.
But that would be what would be needed.
yes?

@BartSilverstrim The DNS record is cached for the period of the TTL. If it's, say, 1 day, it'll take anyone who got that record a full day to recheck DNS.

@MikeyB: yeah, I was thinking of new clients trying to connect, not the ones that got it cached. My duh.

So that means 1 day of downtime on changeover instead of 1 minute.

Setup a LB somewhere, otherwise setup multicast

2:42 PM
@MikeyB: I'm not sure there is an easy way to do what that guy wanted to do without redundant sites available and a load balancer.

lol

He wants to do it cheap, simple and reliable. At best you can get 2/3.

Good luck to apple getting that to stand up in court

All of those are patents

2:44 PM
Apple has a lot of patents out there.
I heard of one that allowed you to change the color of your Mac from software.

i dont know about EU patent law, but in US law, very generic designs like that don't stand up. there needs to be something innovative

@MarkM Why we can buy a Galaxy tab but the Europeans can't

@MarkM Oh my god... they both have DISPLAYS!

@Jacob a temporary injunction is quite a bit different than a ruling.

So from what I'm thinking, the only way that guy could have the redundancy for his web app is to have the VM's and the primary hosting area both running and synced with a load-balancer at the host provider configured. Otherwise there would be issues with the DNS cutover. Or he'd have to focus on having his datacenter fortified against everything short of a natural disaster.

2:47 PM
Much like people accused of violent crimes are denied bail and have to stay in the jail until the trial is over. Doesn't mean they're necessarily guilty.

@Jacob: technically they can still get them.

@BartSilverstrim really?

I forget the wording but Samsung couldn't ship them there. Retailers that already had a stock can sell them.
It's just a way to irritate them in legal wrangling.

@MarkM There has to be something "innovative" as the reviewer understands the concept (or doesn't understand, as is more often the case with tech patents)

Large companies are being sued all the time.

2:49 PM
Right

So they're trying to stave off some sales temporarily.

Temporary injunctions are levied all the time. Judges tend to err on the side of caution and want to defend the patent holder.

It's due to a patent lawsuit about Apple's designs being copied by a couple other companies and wanting access to their design work before release.
So they're in a pissing match over how to get into a position to deal.
It's like, if you get pulled over or arrested, you'll have thirty charges thrown at you because they're hoping two or three will stick.

@BartSilverstrim You can't copyright a screen. Shall I burn my TV,phone, non apple LCD screens and computers?

It's not unusual even for Apple to have some company they deal with like Samsung to be suing them while still manufacturing some things for them.

2:51 PM
afaik, you can't patent a form factor. that's like patenting a square and asking for royalties every time something that's a square is made. What they can patent is a square that has a specific kind of touch input that's different than anything else around

@ChrisS Or you know, swinging sideways on a swing.

stretch
yawn

Anyway, im out for a few. Gotta call some dumbass vendor

what have I missed? Has the fuckwittery already started?

see ya

2:52 PM
oh apparently it's about to begin for @MarkM

@Jacob: there are very simple things that have been patented, like being able to transmit files to another computer using bluetooth, things like that. That's what patent trolls sue over.

remember bring the shot glasses so you can do the vendor drinking game!

And the reason the patent system in the US is said to be broken.

@MarkM You could claim that square shape is useful for something; like bashing people with; and patent the shape for that general purpose. Our Patent laws were formed long before people started pulling "technicalities" on legal wordings (and consistently getting away with such)

@voretaq7 Apple patenting the world... Iworld

2:52 PM
@Jacob they're not patenting the world.

@Jacob: you can't bash apple for it. They're not, by far, the only ones doing patent stupidity.

they're BUYING the corporations that HOLD the patents.
there's a very subtle difference.

That's the popular thing. It's not just Apple. Google just did it with moto. MS does it. Most large corporations boost their portfolios doing it.
It's why small companies are often acquired now.

@voretaq7 That's a constant; it doesn't begin and will never end.

@BartSilverstrim Google just ate Moto

2:53 PM
Small businesses get a good idea, do some marketing, try to sell themselves to the big players, retire.

@ChrisS but it ebbs and flows like the Spam tide.
@Jacob Only PART of Moto. I don't know if Google got Symbol in the deal.

@voretaq7 they got the mobility part
@voretaq7 mobility= red moto=blue

@Jacob Motorola is a lot more than its Mobility division :)
Symbol = neither (Motorola never Moto-logo'd them)

@voretaq7 thats my point. the mobility section split
and was aquired by google for lunch

@Jacob nonsense. that was a mid-morning snack for Google.

2:55 PM
Anybody know a way in HTML/CSS to float an element over other elements without using position:fixed?

If they had bought the whole mess that would have been one course of lunch.
