@joojaa There is just this sort of academic/nerdy mode one can be in where you are searching for reasons and rules. And you can keep asking and asking. Graphic design is a bit more solution oriented. I bet people drawing impressive perspective drawings never really think much about these matters. If you start creating stuff instead of thinking about the theory you might find that these questions don't need answering?

@Scott -- Note to self: Always download files from link services like Hightail immediately when a client emails them to you you. The downloads expire and you'll have to ask the client to resend things. (Yeah.. did this today... ugh.. had to ask for a resend two weeks later... hate that.. make me look inefficient and unprofessional.)

@Scott Note to self: Never immediately remake 265 nametags when the client sends the second revised "final_final" file. Give at an hour or two until the third "final_final_final" file shows up. 😫

@Wolff I tend to wait for the "final_final_final_REALFINAL_final" file. -- Funny though.. the speed at which I work has often meant redoing things if I jump in right away... so I learned to always wait at least 2 hours before doing anything.

Long story short.. I sent a "hey I'm free if you have projects" email out to clients a couple weeks ago cuz I had nuthing to do.... got a few projects including a larger one.. but...I've procrastinated on that one a bit, focusing on the smaller projects to get them done... it's been a week or so.... went to dive in to that large project today.. the "transferbigfiles.com" link has expired.. oooof.

Kinda proves to the client that you haven't given their project a thought since you last talked with them.

I'm blaming it on file corruption due to an OS upgrade I had to perform...

@Scott They don't know about aaall the preparations you have to make.

I'm fast with stuff... really fast... So I tend to procrastinate when I'm just not into things... then crank things out at a rapid pace.

But I gotta remember to ALWAYS download client links immediately when they send them :)

@Scott I'm fast ... in theory. But cleaning the material from the client can take time. And asking them about stuff waiting for answer. And them editing the original files while I work with the first draft and stuff like that.

Truth is I can do what the client thinks is a 60-80hr project in about 10-15hrs if needed... but not without the copy :) I really just get text from clients.. maybe a headshot now and then or a jpg/pdf of a book cover... most art/photos are for me to source.

But I have had more client content demand type positions int eh past.. and yeah.. clients can be their own worst enemy :)

Stock.. always edited stock.. or custom illustrations.

Used to do photographers in the early 00s but that's gone the way of the dinosaur any more.

And.. since the iPhone camera is as good as any Cannon DSLR... clients tend to take their own headshots... but I do have to ask them to take a LOT of them.. so I can hopefully get one decent one.

Most of my clients have professional head shots done at some point

@Scott I don't know if it's the same for every designer, but I feel for every project I have to take on sort of an editor role. Or babysitter. It's rare to get everything nice and orderly.

yeah that's true here as well. I think it just comes with the designer knowing the entire puzzle.. and everyone else is kind of guessing

@Scott Problem with phone images is still the ... what's it called ...focal length.

Not really... depends on the person taking the photos. I've gotten a couple really good shots from iPhone photos... BUT... the person using the iPhone needs to be aware of things like light, background, angle, etc.... I wont' use the "selfie" shots... I tell clients to have their wife/husband take the shots if needed.. and take them outside when possible

sort of helps get rid of the worst things people do...

But such images are really used more as secondary images.. so I'm not continually using the same headshot from the cover of something 4 more times on the interior.

@Scott We have a client who sometimes needs us to remove backgrounds on some portraits. They think they help by having a white background, but it's this wallpaper with sort of a waffle texture to it. Real tricky with dry puffy hair.

I imagine.. probably more tricky the older or blonder the subject :)

You surely get more "random" stuff than I do.. I deal with the same handful of clients.. so I've educated them over the years.

@Scott I do. And some regular clients as well. Sometimes when I'm used to some inconvenience I won't dare rock the boat. You don't know if a change is for the better, and if they were trying to follow my advice it's somehow also my fault.

But I get better at foreseeing the problems and educate new clients. If I expect them to become a regular.

@Scott I've estimated that for the last 13 years I've been through 4.300 orders. Some just checking a PDF in 5 minutes others an 80 hour coffee table book. So I don't know how telling it is.

:) I had a job in the late 90s... to prove I was worthy fo a raise I started keeping tack of the number of projects I worked on in a day... it was a minimum of 150 and a max around 300-400 some days. Quick, mostly typesetting, type of things - business cards, fliers, invitations, etc. Small one-off stuff. I know in that job alone over 6 years I mustve done at least 5K in projects.

today... I MIGHT do 300 a year...

I havent really been tracking it... I probably should though.

In my experience, the better the job,, the less the project load :) Allowing more time for actual design.

@Scott Of course. It's just that we have order numbers and have always been around 3 designers. So I can just take the number of orders and divide by three.

Work's been VERY slow here the past year though... Covid repercussions are just hitting my clients... everything moved online during covid... my clients are more old-school.
