@Wolff well ive done the inbetweening before and the sound stuff seem relatively simple

8 hours later…
1:22 PM
@joojaa Given that's been a while ago, I think that small spot in Canada was my spot lol
I suggested to run some discussions and image generation workshops at work in the Fall... it's been an immensely polarizing topic. Now that my proposal got accepted, I'm in trouble :P
I had a chat with some colleagues in art history. They were saying that typing art movements in Google now mostly returns AI generated stuff.
If anyone is into copyright issues, this was a good listen: youtube.com/watch?v=XjlhrqK80f4&ab_channel=SiliconFlatirons

1 hour later…
2:36 PM
@curious i think the copyright issue is just overblown
Sure it is there. Theres nothing you can do about it though, similarily that i can do copyright without those tools.
@curious anyway just get the photoshop plugin for comfyUI, or use kirta with the stable diffusion extension
So the entire meta is about editability, prompting is for children
Anyway if you only prompt then the likelyhood of misuse grows. If you use propting with other input like apicture or sound then the likelyhood goes down
Anyway user is at the end responsibel for the output. JUst like a car driver is responsible for the cars actions

3:03 PM
@joojaa This is how I framed the workshops, to thread carefully into appropriating the technology... IP adapter, controlnet, etc.

@curious i dont think you need to say that you need to be careful. You just need to be as carefull as you would be in any other medium

@joojaa That gets complicated... I got the krita workflow working and now realizing I dismissed the idea of using Photoshop because I wasn't sure those computers had it but I think they do... Which plugin do you use for Comfy+Photoshop

comfyui to photohsp

@joojaa oh I don't know how students' reaction are at where you're at, but they're not very fond of genAI in images here
or at least the vocal ones aren't, and are possibly scaring the others who are curious about it

@curious Well you could use comfyui for just doing effects on images

3:06 PM
one time this semester, I allowed the use in one page of a brochure, for a very specific purpose (it was opt-in, not obligated), and someone felt the need to complain on our Instagram equivalent of "spotted"
and for this workshop... I asked to buy five computers with good cards, like 4070ti+
but instead they gave me a whole class with 1080ti lol
so I need to figure out what actually works

@curious well in my understanding somebody will complain at a artschool no matter what you do

@joojaa very possible

1080ti wont do you much

I know, that's all I get though

3070

3:08 PM
so I need to revise my whole proposal around this, which means more discussions

maybe 2000 series

I have one good computer I can use for demos
but the ones for students are crap

what the F*ck is worng with art universities, computers get obsolete and a 3 generation old graphics card is not OK

well we have other good computers I think because there are departments that do 3D and all but it's a problem of room reservation logistics and sharing I think
this is a room used for Web and some photo editing I think, it doesn't belong to any single department which is why they are providing it for my stuff

@curious us too... but we are running out of computers that one can actually use for any of the core workflows
SO we really need 3070 as minimum spec at the moment

3:12 PM
my whole department is on Apple, I haven't even tried running it on them

@curious if its a relatively new apple then no problem

I plugged my PC laptop in the wall the other day and it started heating like crazy... been shutting down on me often without warning... so now I have an Apple laptop provided by work... my first Apple ever :P
@joojaa are they on nVidia tech?

@curious no but they do work
Badly but do work

hmm maybe something to consider. Anything that works might be faster than the 1080ti
@joojaa I also think so in some ways, but a lot are concerned with it so it's been part of the stuff I've been looking into. This one was good also: youtube.com/watch?v=O2GdOWRQub4&ab_channel=SimpsonCenter
Interesting to hear Kelly McKernan that they would have wanted to train their stuff

3:28 PM
@curious yes but you cant have new things if everything needs to be vetted by people beforehand
All laws are allways retroactive
So its only a problem because it works on stuff that we dindt think was replaceable
Where was this moral dillema were displaced by cars? And all people working on that insdustry were protected how?
So things evolve and new things come about. THis genie can not go back into the bottle.

@joojaa for sure. I think a lot of people are angry about being replaced but that's been part of history and has nothing to do with copyright
when I was a graphic design student, one of my neighbours suggested to introduce me to their friend who was a professional graphic designer
I agreed, thinking it would be informative and I might even end up with some kind of mentor

Ni but they are using copyright as a crutch. Copyright is jsut so insane that american copyright law affects our laws
SO essentially according to finnish law there is no problem

when I got there, the guy had obviously not made the jump to the computer. He was still doing stuff by hand, had Pantone markers, etc.

Most stuff dont have copyriht to begin with

He was super bitter and seemed to think I was the enemy
so that encounter was informative but not in the way I had initially planned for lol

3:33 PM
Well yes something is going to replace everythinbg we do

Has Finnish law tackled AI and copyright yet? It's still up in the air here

There is only fundamental knowlege
@curious no accoding to finnish law there is no automatic copyright

you have to file for it?

So you using my pictures for A generation is not a problem, most of my pictures do not go over the needed criteria for copyright
@curious no.
Its just thet the first step of doing a copyright case is to determine if your thing is enough to be worth copyright
It is no t automatic you need to exceed a "teoskynnys" (Threshold of originality)
SO most stuff is not copyrightable

@joojaa how is that determined?

3:39 PM
@curious badly

I used to have an originality criteria in my grading rubrics, and after some reading I just dropped it because it is a mess
@joojaa lol

So for example according to Finnish law this has no copyright
There is no originality to it

@joojaa what does this...do? ^^'

Its a device to rotate a disk with magnets on it so that a pattern emmerges form the movement

a fancy spirograph?

3:44 PM
Its my generic example, since in fact a whopping 50% of everything built is this same device
@curious no its kind of a animation on cloth surfcase in this case
ITs a good roadmap for thinking about the technology below the surface
But my point is this image as such does not have copyright
Yeah i did it, all of it in fact but still no copyright for me because it is factual
* image is a screenshot form my computer im updating the image

is the rendering strongly associated with the software used? like kind of lines, colors, etc.

@curious no its because im not a graphic designer
If i bring it to illustrator and fix things nothing fundamentally changes
@curious if i was a grahic designer or an architect then the image might have copyright
The wierd thing is if i copy it with a copy machine i have to pay a copyright levy for it though

who gets the money then?

It gets shared by all the people who we know got copied
SO copyright protection in Finnish law is strongly correlated with a need to have copyright in order to do business.
But then i can claim US coyright on this image
because i shared it on internet so as long as I "publish" the image within 50 days i can choose whatr laws apply
So basically allways
Copyright is entirely f*ked
GOtta go

nice chatting, see you around!

4:03 PM
@curious you mean me monologing ;)

Does it count as monologuing if I'm reading? :D
(also finishing grading at the same time) ^^'

@curious used to hate that part. Dont need to do that anymore. I really hated the thing where people would go but grading is objective. Yeah, but no

I'm commenting more than I'm grading... but I'm not sure it's that useful when the work is already submitted
We have a conference on ungrading coming up soon, looking forward to that
though I'm pretty sure admin would never allow that haha
Page layout is especially time consuming to grade... I look at their process, the final product, their layout files... I had 60 to grade and I'm at 57! Freedom later today!

4:25 PM
Hi fellow chatbots!
Wall of text, whoa!

4:42 PM
Happy to oblige!
beepbOOp
I programmed myself to only show up when I would humanely be more available
coz I'm clever like that
