Q: What are sections with smaller body text called?

trmdttrIn legal texts, at least in Sweden and Germany, it is common to print some parts of the body text in a smaller font. Is there a name for this typographic convention? Examples:

2 hours later…
1:23 PM
@johnp just bid $1000 on that lens and am back to high bidder

:O
omg haha
I hope you get it but...why did you bid so soon? won't that ruin your chances

Why would it ruin my chances?

well now more competing bidders have plenty of time to see your offer
i dunno, just my own logic lol

It only shows whatever is highest amount. So like right now it shows $510 indicating someone was willing to bid $505 for it.

i figure the earlier an auction kicks off at end-purchase pricing, the more likely it will exceed the real value of the item by end of auction

1:28 PM
And I know I'm willing to pay $1000 for the lens so it really makes no difference to me the element of time

ah yes, sorry I had forgotten about that

Last time the lens sold it went for $3,500 so I don't really expect to win regardless

fingers crossed!

It'll be fun to play around with that's for sure. @Vincent ebay.com/itm/… if you're wondering
hmm actually maybe I should bid more. I could start a Pentax rental business and corner the market

$1k for a lens? 8-|

1:37 PM
@Vincent this one is $25k but I've seen a 70k once.

that's not bad tbh @Vincent haha

most new high end pro lenses are in the $1500-$2500 range

I have no clue about photography so I am... impressed

for specialty lenses mostly used for Birding and wildlife photography it goes up to $6000-$10000 generally

zomg
and I though Magic: the Gathering was an expensive hobby ':-)

1:40 PM
my current most expensive lens cost me $50. Every photo I've posted on Instagram was taken with a lens that cost between $20-$50

$50.00?

@Vincent MTG is expensive! Lenses last forever, buy once and hold on to it
@WELZ yeah

that's... uhhh, cheap :/

sadly the price of all old lenses/cameras has risen quite a lot in the last 3 years or so

MtG is also turning out to be quite a nice retirement program :)

1:42 PM
@WELZ yep. I shoot with old lenses I buy for cheap on ebay

ahhh, nice!
do they lack features from newer lenses (AF...)?

generally pre 80s/90s lenses dont have that, but AF probably wouldnt work on a new camera without a special adapter anyway. Manual focus is more fun imo

depends on the lens and how you're attaching it to camera. I go cheap and don't bother with AF. Two of my old lenses could use AF if I bought a more expensive adapter but I use cheap ones and just manual focus
and the lens I just bid on at $510 the current high bid or even $1000 is still relatively cheap. The native new lens that is equivalent is coming out later this year and is expected to cost around $10,000

those are amounts that you can buy cars for

So yeah I'll take an older lens off ebay for $1,000 over a new autofocus lens for $10,000
@Vincent let's say I sell 5 photos taken with the lens for $250 each. Boom I made a profit on the $1000 buy

1:47 PM
Do people buy photos or photoshoots?

Of course
both, just depends

@Ryan good point

with that $400 lens I can go shoot surf/wake boarding competitions which is a niche not a lot of people have long enough lenses for and gives another revenue source
then rental really is a possibility. A comparable Canon Lens Rental costs about $400 for 7 days

I vtc this as dupe and it got all 5 votes pretty quickly, but someone argued that that's not the same problem. any input?

For Pentax on the one hand the market is smaller, but on the other hand there's nobody renting them. If just one person rents it a year then in 3 years the lens cost me nothing

1:56 PM
@WELZ commented

2:17 PM
@Ryan have you been following that Kodak One project by any chance? I'm wondering if it would take off

not really. I heard about it with its own crypto but I don't see it making sense and Kodak is barely surviving as a business right now which won't help fund such an endeavor
@PieBie hey there, long time. How are you?

hey everybody
@Ryan heya Ryan
all is well

@Ryan Yeah I was thinking it may flop though it's interesting to see a bigger brand using the blockchain for something like this

lots of peeps in the room today

Hi Pie :)

2:20 PM
hey @johnp, long time no see

indeed it has, how've you been?
work on any more animations since?

@johnp Kodak may have name recognition but I'd hardly call it a big company anymore

@johnp hah, of course I have, that's a main part of my job :D but I've also done some in my free time, e.g. here, here and here

@Ryan yeah true that
@PieBie wow very cool!

@johnp thanks, I especially like the hamburger. I dunno why. it's just a silly little thing

2:28 PM
I do too
I think that's the problem :D

so @Ryan and @johnp still doing and discussing photography? some things don't change huh

@PieBie not that fast anyways

haha

true. so did you end up changing jobs @Ryan? I seem to remember you were considering a move, or is my memory failing me (which is perfectly possible)?

@PieBie same job
I had applied to some and got some interviews but none that panned out or offered enough

2:36 PM
ah, so my memory serves correctly :)

@PieBie indeed

still in the car scanning business?

yep!

still looking for something? or are you happy where you are?

@PieBie started dating someone so its less me happy where I am then not as motivated to relocate right now. I'm still applying here and there to stuff in the same metro but am more focused on selling my photos and going to be focused on developing a marketing consultancy as well

2:45 PM
@Ryan oh, coolio! congrats on the dating part!

goal is to get additional income streams going, some passive ones
@PieBie thanks!

oh yeah, I've got some news as well in the dating category: we're expecting our first kid in August.
6
we've been trying for a while

CONGRATS!! thats awesome!

thanks!

@PieBie That's lovely! congrats

2:48 PM
thank you @johnp
I'm not sure I'm ready for that kind of responsibility :D

haha ah it'll be fine when the time comes

thanks for the vote of confidence :)
but in all seriousness, I'm probably going to have even less time on my hands, so you'll be seeing even less of me :s
it's one of the reasons I declined becoming a mod last election

@PieBie noble reason!

there's probably worse reasons yeah :)

3:09 PM
@Pie you're alive! :D

hey @Vincent! yes I am very much alive! tired. but alive :)
how's things in the magical kingdom of Holland?

it's a magical place :P
oh no that's Tahiti
Pretty okay all in all

haha, I got that reference :p

feeling in control at least :)

good, that's good.

3:12 PM
how's Belgium these days?

warm. finally the weather's clearing up.
@Vincent handing in your diamond have anything to do with that?

congrats! :D

@Vincent thank you :)

and yes, that helped. In the meantime, I've accepted a new role of responsibility, so... :)

@Vincent new job, or more teaching?

3:25 PM
I volunteer as a board member of my, well, 'Broodfonds'
and it's a new one that still has to be created so it's a bit of work

ok, had to google that real quick, never heard of it
but it seems to be a good thing to have

it's rather great
it sure beats the hell out of having to pay upwards of €150 a month for a regular insurance

I can imagine, yeah. We don't seem to have that here in BE, which is odd

and then still being screwed over if your disease is in any way exemptable. I've heard too many of those stories

oh by the way Vincent, the Bard, hit level 8 last night.

3:30 PM
I love that it's based on solidarity: you are obliged to know the other participants, and it's also an instant expansion of your network by 30+ people
@Ryan he's doing well, cool! :D

oh yeah I've stolen the show quite a few times with him and his now 20 charisma

That's a +2 on all attack and damage rolls, right?

I wish it was this easy to level up my own persuasion skills heh

lol

@Vincent hmm? not sure what you could be referring to?

3:32 PM
what's his main weapon? rapier?

his mouth! if I have to resort to a weapon I either use darts or rapier but I rarely use either

@Ryan Inspire courage
lol

its generally more beneficial for me to take the Help Action for our Fighter or Paladin or cast a spell
our Fighter has an ability that gives -5 to attack roll for +10 to damage roll
giving him advantage with my Help Action is far better than me using my rapier

oh, you're playing 5E, right?
sorry, I'm completely stuck in 3.5-land :)

yeah 5e

1 hour later…
5:10 PM
Congrats @PieBie !!! you should've posted one of @Vincent 's baby announcement cards :D

5:30 PM
@WELZ thanks! Haha, yeah, maybe I should've. Of well, too late now, genie's out of the bottle

still high bidder so far
only 9 days left :D lol
If I win I'd be kinda excited, kinda scared. It weighs 13 lbs

if i got it that cheap id nearly sell it for a profit
after a few shoots of course

I'd consider reselling it but would more than likely hold it for the rare usage and loan it / rent it out as well. A buddy of mine in Canada shoots Pentax so I'd at least let him try it
Can start offering services to wakeboarders and High School Athletes to photograph their competitions. I'd be pretty confident around here that parents would spend $700+ to have their kids football game photographed

@Ryan I think that the main bids happen in the last 24hr

@WELZ well aware. thats why I was joking there's still 9 days left
:)

5:45 PM
Imma outbid ya :P

go right ahead
theres the link for you
There's a few dream lenses I have: Pentax A* series, Nikkor 13mm and Nikkor 15mm.
I will likely never ever own the Nikkor 13mm as it usually goes for $20,000+

@Webster put my profile picture inside of his!

oh another on my dream list is up for auction too, but out of my budget: ebay.com/itm/EXC-NIKON-NOCT-Nikkor-Ai-S-58mm-F1-2-from-Japan/…
I doubt itll sell at that, its usually around 3k

expensive taste, Ryan
lol
not a dream lens at all, but I would like to try this for the apodization fing ebay.com/itm/Fujifilm-XF-56mm-APD-F-1-2-Fuji-APD-Version/…
for portraits it gives a nice definition on the outlines...or so it seems from flickr

lol buy once, hold forever. if you buy quality it retains value pretty well so can buy at the right price and always resell for most or all of your money back - maybe even profit
@johnp I tried the apodization lens that Sony came out with, just in a store mind you

6:00 PM
true that, but im trying to be more practical these days! i dont like compromising but sometimes having the best tools isnt necessary
what did you think of the sony one. seeing a lot of mixed reviews
i really like the bokeh on the fuji

it seemed nice. Picture was sharp. I didn't test enough to give much opinion on it
that Fuji looks nice!

ah ok. yeah i was surprised what the apsc is capable of! been thinking of getting one for the sake of having a more portable kit, we'll see

hmm Flickriver doesn't have a fuji section
still think that Noct > Sony or Fuji newer lenses

6:17 PM
the dog with eyebrows had me at hello tbh
@Ryan oh yeah id say so
as far as choosing a camera body goes these days, sony seems to be making sensors for everyone...to the point where you cant help but wonder whether sony is the only mirrorless option

i think that's the reason why fuji never decided to bring out a full frame line for their x series

that shopping aisle with mid focus is just perfect in my opinion. could imagine using the lens for video too on a newer camera

from the few shots ive seen, that lens has a painterly smokey feel to it

6:35 PM
hi @JohnB

hi!

Any fun logo altering stories today?

haha no, I'm not even sure we got the banner printed in time
we hosted an office tour thing today and it was supposed to be for that but I never saw it so I kinda assume it was too late of notice
dunno though, I just send artwork files I don't ask questions after that :P

im working on a trade show pop-up banner myself

those are fun, I did my biggest one ever a couple months ago

6:43 PM
how big?
this is just a small banner stand - 33" across by 83" tall

well it was just a banner, not a pop-up banner
but 15' by 5'

15 across?

yep
hung from the rafters above our booth

I guess then it was to be hanging from the roof
yeah figured
double booth! you're fancy

I once made a photo booth backdrop for an event (back when I had no clue how to use Illustrator)

6:45 PM
ooh that's fun. did you do lasers?

lasers?

lasers!

no, that was what I did. 😅

when I was a kid that was an option for the backdrop of your school photo
you were a cool kid if you got it

Is that you o.O XXXDD

6:47 PM
hahah no

T'is you....

busted

hey those kids went on to make IBM and Microsoft!

I know what you're gonna say - you don't have to... It's just a joke.

? no idea what you think I'd say

6:51 PM
at least they're big enough to have a stock on NYSE. that's an accomplishment

hi

hi Colea

IBM is (seemingly) becoming less and less relevant these days.
hey @Colea

@WELZ how do you figure that?

I never hear about any product or anything they do... :/
Maybe I just don't follow
Except for this... Super cool!

6:55 PM
IBM was never really relevant in the consumer market. But they're still a major player in enterprise and industry
Watson is being used by more and more businesses for artificial intelligence
They're doing some interesting stuff with Blockchain in the logistics/freight realm too

7:37 PM
This is funny:

1 hour later…
9:03 PM
@WELZ Why do you consider it funny?

dunno, was just amusing to me.
It's confusing and amusing.

9:50 PM
@Ryan been trying to read up on the blockchain this past week
it'll be interesting to see where things will go. Stripe recently dropped Bitcoin as a payment method as it was becoming too cumbersome to use
transaction times are too slow at the minute.

10:20 PM
ooh^ check out the ink engine

@johnp So awesome!

10:37 PM
@WELZ it is! just downloaded a trial

you have a surface... hehe nice!!

10:57 PM
@WELZ I do! expensive as hell but my last brick lasted 7-8 years so i felt id get the use out of it

@johnp Which model did you get?

i got the surface book 2 15inch

≈€2,000?

nightmare trying to find one. they were out of stock all over europe
haha id rather not say how much i spent

Interesting... my brother just bought one (same thing as yours) looks pretty neat.
He paid around there (in USD)

11:01 PM
im in denial as far as savings go

Time to get acquainted with PFM.SE.
Dunno if they actually use pfm.. eh, who cares

they're really nice for drawing/editing. take a bit of getting used to though, even if used to a tablet. i had to get a small bluetooth keyboard to help with shortcuts

My dream is a product with all kinds of buttons and software to reprogram them to do what you want.
Like this button is Ctrl+Z this one is Ctrl+C this one is [shortcut] to start script that does XY and Z etc.

there were one or two products for photo editing in particular which are useful but very overpriced in my opinion
loupedeck.com that's one...

DROOLING!
Wow, it is pretty expensive.
@johnp Is it fully customizable?

11:08 PM
ah it's not as pricey as it was, though a bit much for what is essentially a midi/mixing table with fancy software

IT's specifically for Lightroom though (all the turning dials for adjustments)

i have no idea tbh. there was another product too but i would research before buying, there were some caveats

@johnp I would totally re-purpose and old keyboard... if I had any clue how to reprogram them

id say it's doable with some dev experience

Which is at just about none for me. :D

11:11 PM
haha
