...zoom out and see how long it is :-)

Not obscure enough. R-4808

heh
that would also be acceptable :)

5:25 AM
btw if you do decide to rename the room, the URL needs to be changed for the bot in the config file
found that out earlier when the bot disappeared :p

leave the name part of the URL off (chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/12308) -- it should figure it out on its own
assuming a redirect doesn't make the bot cry

worth a try, lets see....

@DannyBeckett Forgive me if someone else has already said this, or if you've considered and rejected it, but the TAF is harder to read if there's no newline at the FM101400 block.
If it breaks markdown, though, it's not a deal-breaker.

6:12 AM
@voretaq7 Is this what you were just saying?

@DannyBeckett yup
@SteveV. it does break markdown, but I'd be OK losing the link to have the TAF come out "normal looking"

one alternative is to add a bullet, like on !!weather?
!!weather lpl

@DannyBeckett LPL/EGGP: Liverpool John Lennon Airport • Observed: 24 mins ago • Wind: 200°/SSW @ 5kts • Visibility: 6.21mi/9.99km • Clouds: Ceiling & visibility ok • Temperature: 6.0°C/43°F • Dewpoint: 3.0°C/37°F • Pressure: 29.82" Hg/1,010mb • Conditions: VFR

that might work too, give it a try

e.g. the • where the new line should be

6:14 AM
Yeah, give that a try.

ok will do that and hit you guys back in a minute

I'm gonna be biased because when I read a TAF I scan it like it's columns (I generally ignore the times 'cuz weather forecasts are never right about WHEN something's gonna happen - I just want to know what they expect will happen so I can expect the least convenient outcome for me)

Yeah TAF needs to be multi-line more than it needs to have a link.

ok well if that's the case, let's just do that
@BretCopeland @Bret it'd be awesome if we could have both :(

not my fault

6:19 AM
yeah I know

the only "formatting"
which works for new lines
is to have monospace

that would probably be better anyway
for TAFs and METARs
right?

Very yes.

I presume you just did that with 4 spaces?

@DannyBeckett yeah

6:21 AM
@DannyBeckett yep, has to be on every single line. If any lines are not indented like that it doesn't do anything.

ok cool

the 4 spaces on every line may put some longer TAFs over 500 characters though :)

@voretaq7 500 limit doesn't apply

I have a new cloud code here: NSC
what's that?

...yeah that's true b/c it's got newlines :)

6:22 AM
@voretaq7 Regarding what forecasters expect to happen, the Area Forecast Discussion is my absolute favorite weather product for that. I use that sucker way more than I use the TAF.

sky_cover Sky coverage. Values are: NSC|SKC|CLR|SKT|BKN|FEW|OVC|OVCX

@SteveV. I use the NWS forecaster discussions (the TAF discussions are useful sometimes too, but more often than not they're empty around here :P)

and SKT too
oh and OVCX

No Such Code. Means the forecaster got drunk.

@DannyBeckett "No Significant Clouds"

6:23 AM
thx

i.e. "We're probably gonna have clouds. But we don't think it's gonna be a low overcast or anything. Idunno, I'm just a dog with a weather radar. Where's my milkbone?!"

Incidentally I need to punch a meteorologist

are we thinking of the same thing? this is what i'm thinking of: forecast.weather.gov/…

the warm weather (and rain) keeps moving closer and closer to the weekend
@SteveV. yup

6:24 AM
how about SKT & OVCX?

there's a "TAF Discussion" available on ADDS which is just the "Aviation" chunk of that -- i.e. "Generally Useless"

Never knew that.
Good pilot always learning etc etc.

@DannyBeckett those two I don't know....

Neither do I, and I'm a meteorology professor.

hmmm..
they're specific to TAFs

6:27 AM
To AC 00-45G!

METAR doesn't have them

and they don't show up in the TAF format template

NSC "Never Seen these Clouds"

so whoever is using them should be beaten with the TAF format template until they repent for their sin

METAR: SKC|CLR|CAVOK|FEW|SCT|BKN|OVC|OVX
TAF: NSC|SKC|CLR|SKT|BKN|FEW|OVC|OVCX
the 2nd line is from aviationweather.gov/adds/dataserver/tafs/… (row 27)

6:29 AM
well I can tell you by inference (SKT = SCT ; OVCX = OVX)
but I don't see them in 00-45 either

OVCX could also be OVX
though I think you're right
Overcast & obscured, perhaps?

I'm pretty sure OVCX is Overcast/Obscured same as OVX (for use when you're expecting dense low-level fog)
SKT...has to be scattered

Yeah, it's even in the right place in the order.

lmao, I was thinking that

and thinking about it thats how I think I usually see it

6:31 AM
Between CLR and BKN

who the hell spelled scattered wrong I wonder
ok I'll go for that!

I also would guess OVCX is obscured, but i've never, ever seen it used.

@SteveV. OVX is obscured

@BretCopeland I just figured out, the \n bypasses the 500 char limit so you can post a block of code
I guess the dev assumed you wouldn't want markdown to be formatted if you're pasting code
but didn't check for Line.BeginsWith(' ')

@DannyBeckett eh, four spaces starting the line is normal markdown syntax for code.
There's no reason it couldn't still go through the render engine.

7:14 AM
you said if a message contains \n, it goes down a different code path
n/m... just speculating

@DannyBeckett just for rendering. Basically what happens is if multiLine is true, then it checks whether every line starts with four spaces. If so, it wraps the whole thing in <pre> tags. If not, it wraps it all in a <div>
@voretaq7 +1 on Groom Lake.
I guess if you're going to build the fastest plane in the world, you might as well build a five mile long runway.

@BretCopeland ah I see, and no further Markdown formatting is done to it after it gets wrapped in <div> or <pre>

@DannyBeckett yeah
