Well suppose we change 853 to 852. What does that do to the differences?

Difference is just halved

Yes, and looks a more likely pattern. So my guess is that the number 853 is the wrong term because it should be 852.

Why not 897

Even there there is this half problem isn't it?

How would you change 897 to make the differences halve each time?

If the differences halve each time then the third number has to the second number + 90
