@JohnRennie Sir what is meant by connecting port during COVID?
A detailed explanation to this will be most certainly welcome.

3:47 AM
I will quote from somewhere the news..
In the new memorial being built in England's port city of Southampton to commemorate all the Indians who fought in the World Wars, the design of a ______ statue of an early 20th-century fighter plane has been approved.
This is what the quote is basically.

Q: Having difficultly to understand two indices with regard to inflation

TheFinanceOfficerWhat are these terms "provisional headline inflation" and "imputed index" used to predict in terms of inflation?

Yes that is another profile of me
However the provisional Headline index is not really well explained.

There are lots of measures of inflation because not all types of goods increase in cost at the same rate.
For example food prices might go up a lot but fuel prices might stay the same.

Ok
Please answer in slight detail

4:24 AM
Typically the most common measure of inflation is the consumer price index. This is calculated by taking the prices of a whole range of things and averaging the price rises.
And this is usually what is meant by headline inflation.
It takes a lot of work to calculate the CPI exactly because there are thousands of goods that you need to find the price of, then process all that data to produce the final figure.

So it's common to issue an estimate of the CPI halfway through the calculation i.e. when you have a lot of the data but not all of it. This gives people an advance warning of what the final result is likely to be, then you can issue the exact figure later when you have all the data.
And this is the provisional figure.

So the provisional headline inflation is an estimate of what the CPI will be based on having some but not all of the data on prices.
An imputed figure is one that has been estimated rather than actually measured.

4:30 AM
For example covid restrictions may mean that the government cannot get all the price data, so it has to estimate the prices it could not collect. Then those figures are imputed, which basically means guessed.
So the imputed index is the inflation rate based on some data that has been estimated rather than actually measured.

Is that clear now?

4:51 AM
Yes
Please move to the next topic.

What is the work of a secretary?
How is it different from a President?
What is meant by Assistant Secretary General and head of the new york office
Could they equivalently be the same post
?
I'm not sure that secretary is a precisely defined term.
I think it just means an important official.

ok
Ok please move to the third question.

How is Oscar different from Golden Globes?
I don't know because I am uninterested in films. You'd have to Google to find out what these awards are.

ok..:-)
Assistant Secretary General and Head of New York Office are they the same post
Please highlight one the same.

What New York Office
The United Nations?

5:02 AM
yes United Nations Environmental programme
This is what I am having doubts with..

yes bang on :-)

I don't know to be honest

The article doesn't make it clear what the two roles are.
But it's common for one person to have more than one role so Ligia Noronha could be both Assistant Secretary-General and the Head.

5:09 AM
ok got you..
Btw the previous days question on North and South was pretty easy..

OK :-)

We only had to consider the extreme point
as the diagonal..
Which we didn't
Please move to the next question..

What is meant by Red Carpet?
At important ceremonies like the Oscars it's traditional to lay down a red carpet for the film stars to walk along.
So the term red carpet has come to mean any special arragement you make for someone who is famous.

ok
Metaphorical or non metaphorical..

Metaphorical.
In the case of the Oscars it's literal as they really do lay down a red carpet.
But in most other cases it doesn't actually mean a red carpet, just some special arrangements.

5:18 AM
ok
Ok got you.
What is a special purpose vehicle in simple language?

I don't think special purpose vehicle has a specific meaning.
It's just some vehicle designed to be used in a way that is unusual.

5:35 AM
In economic terms there could be please check this out
A special purpose vehicle, also called a special purpose entity (SPE), is a subsidiary created by a parent company to isolate financial risk. Its legal status as a separate company makes its obligations secure even if the parent company goes bankrupt.
Could you get this what it means

Give me a moment ...
@RajorshiKoyal OK, the word vehicle in economics doesn't necessarily mean a car or truck i.e. not the usual meaning. It can mean a company that you create for a specific purpose.

I am confusing myself :P
Let me quote the whole news

Suppose you have a company, and you want to launch a new product.

Adani Green Energy has signed definitive agreements with the Toronto-headquartered Sky Power Global to acquire _____ percent stake in a special purpose vehicle (SPV).
What does special vehicle mean in the context.

But the product needs a lot of money to develop and you have to borrow that money.
If you borrow that money then the new product is a failure and doesn't sell then you can't repay the money and your company goes bankrupt. Yes?
OK so far?

5:46 AM
ok

To guard against this what you can do is set up a separate company just to develop the new product. That other company borrows the money needed to develop the product, and if things go wrong that other company goes bust, and your company is still fine.

ok
Why would the other company want to take that risk

The new company is a special purpose company because it was set up only to develop the (risky) new product.
So this would be an example of a special purpose vehicle, where vehicle just means a company.

Adani Green Energy has signed definitive agreements with the Toronto-headquartered Sky Power Global to acquire _____ percent stake in a special purpose vehicle (SPV).

5:50 AM
Now Adani could go bankrupt then why would it want to take that risk?

This means the companies Adani Green Energy and Sky Power Global are going to set up a new company for some reason.
Maybe it's to develop some new product.

But 100 percent stake is the answer for the blank
So it is totally being owned by Adani isn't it?

It just means they own all the shares in the new company, but they are not liable for its debts.

How?
I could not get the argument properly. It seems confusing.

If the new company goes bust owing millions of dollars Adani Green Energy and Sky Power Global don't have to pay back that money.
@RajorshiKoyal I own shares in Unilever, but if Unilever goes bust and owes money I don't have to pay back that money.

5:52 AM
then who will pay the money that it ows?

No-one.
The people who lent the money to the new company will lose their money.

That is hiarious :-)
hilarious*

Lending to a new company is risky so lenders will usually charge a high interest rate.

What if I take the loan directly on behalf of the company what am I to lose that is what I am asking
What is the perk of having a subsidary?

Then if the company does well they make a lot of money. If it fails they lose their money.
Typically lenders will make loans to lots of new companies, and enough of the new companies succeed that overall the lenders still make money.
@RajorshiKoyal if you make the loan directly using your company and you can't pay it back your company goes bust and you have no job and no money.

5:58 AM
ok..

If you set up a separate company and it goes bust the original company is still fine and is still paying you.

@JohnRennie Sir have you read any book recently written by any economist?

@RajorshiKoyal no, I have never read a book on economics.

ok
Low-cost carrier GoAir operated the first night flight from Srinagar to _____, thus becoming the first airline in the history of Indian aviation to achieve this feat.
What is the big ddeal here
Why has not body achieved something like this in the past/

I don't know. I don't know anything about operating airlines.

6:03 AM

RBI also has four fully owned subsidary right as we have already discussed
What is the big deal here?
Please assist me with this..
