@voretaq7 I might have just found 3 random A's of yours to upvote push you over 20k

@Farhan you'd think he would change laptop at least once in his career

@DanHulme hah, good catch

A: Are there ever temporary flight corridors?

rbpThere aren't temporary flight corridors, but during emergencies, the FAA will issue temporary flight restrictions (TFRs), many of which include the following text: ALL AIRCRAFT ENTERING OR EXITING THE TFR MUST BE ON A DISCRETE CODE ASSIGNED BY AN AIR TRAFFIC...AIRSPACE CONTROL (ATC) FACIL...

Can someone verify the "wrong way" thing? I've never heard that

8:45 PM
@falstro I don't think it exists in the US. It's not in the Pilot/Controller Glossary and I've never heard it mentioned. If I'm IFR, ATC should be keeping that altitude free for me anyway.

@Pondlife yeah, same here
but he's talking about what the FAA would do, so I assumed he was referring to US ATC.

@falstro The legal requirement to fly those IFR altitudes is "unless otherwise authorized" (or whatever the wording is ) anyway

Another gem from my new flying book: "Ventilation generally improves the cockpit environment significantly." I'll be sure to bear that in mind when I'm freezing my arse off in an open Tiger Moth.

:)

@DanHulme Is that your "new old" flying book? It sounds a bit pipe and tweed to me :-) I had a book like that, by the way, it's not a criticism :-)

9:01 PM
it's not even "new old": it's the 12th edition, 2013

9:25 PM
@DanHulme If you honestly object to that statement you should come visit New York in July and I'll stick you in one of the flight school's Warriors with the skirt-lifter vents on the floor :)
A word of advice to anyone who ever wants to buy a PA28: Buy the old ones (1966 and earlier) because they have ACTUAL VENTILATION so it's not a sauna when you're taxiing out :)

9:41 PM
@voretaq7 Try the Katana, you're sitting under a concave sheet of plexiglass focusing all those rays right at you. You're well done before the airflow starts pumping OAT air into that little oven. Especially if you have a long taxi. :)

@falstro "It's your own fault for wanting to see outside!" :-P

yeah probably. I've grown to prefer the TB10 though. :)
even though the electrical, oil, and fuel gauges are phenomenally retarded.. :)

It's really hard for me to imagine anything worse than the new-style Cherokee vents though.

I don't understand: what's all that stuff in the top half of the picture? :-p
also, thanks for posting that, as now I know what plane the cockpit diagrams in this book are supposed to be

9:57 PM
@DanHulme Decoration :)

@voretaq7 You beat me to the airbag question by 2 minutes :P

@Farhan :-P

@DanHulme most small-ish GA planes have their instruments arranged in a similar fashion
most larger ones with steam gauges too when I think about it :P

@voretaq7 btw, what else are you looking at your hobbs vs tach question?

what's the black knob at the bottom of the picture, on the central pillar thing?

10:04 PM
@voretaq7 Your plane looks very neat.

@Farhan Nothing - I just never got around to accepting your answer :P
(when I forget such things do prod me!)
@Farhan Mine ain't that pretty :P
@DanHulme the round knob, or the lever pointing straight up?
(the lever is the fuel tank selector, the round knob is rudder trim)

I was thinking of the round knob, but I guess it doesn't matter now

@DanHulme Is that trim?

@Farhan so voretaq7 says

@DanHulme Yup, I am caught up now.

10:17 PM
@voretaq7 you got rudder trim?

@falstro kinda. It's a spring that can push (or pull) on the pedal for you.

heh, neat

yeah it's a nice little feature - especially when you're doing slow flight or stall recovery and you can crank most of the pressure off your foot.
Of course when it's out of whack (like in the plane I trained in) the results can be confusing - like "right rudder in a left turn?!" confusing.

yay piper

@egid Hey aside from the whole "Let's rivet steel plates directly to the bare aluminum spar!" thing they didn't make too many bad design decisions :)

10:24 PM
agree

(and when you take a Comanche and rip half the parts off it you actually get a pretty nice plane :P)
