whats good

3:14 AM
@voretaq7 So the long version is coming for the engine question?

3:35 AM
@Farhan which one? :)

7 hours later…
11:05 AM
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to the site

12:00 PM
@DanHulme Hey, how's it going?

great thanks
I have to decide what plane to learn on

12:18 PM
@DanHulme cool, what kind of license are you considering?

@falstro just a PPL

@DanHulme that's not "just" :)

I mean, nothing commercial
anyway, the dilemma is, there's more than one flying school here

but cool, usually the choice of trainer aircraft is more or less depending on the local flight school fleet. I didn't really have a choice, I trained on the Katana (Diamond DA20)
heh

so I can learn on something conventional like a Cessna or a PA-18, or I can learn on a Tiger Moth
I have a friend who's already learning a Tiger Moth and he wants me to join him
allegedly (say the instructors there) starting with it makes you a much better pilot, but it takes longer to learn and is more expensive

12:28 PM
I generally don't agree with stuff like that; some aircraft may be more forgiving, but that just means that if you're lousy pilot, you'll still be able to fly it. But if you focus on your technique, and you have a good instructor, you'll be just as good a pilot
but that's just my opinion

the Tiger Moth is also a lot of fun, but very limited by weather

@DanHulme so do both? :)
anyway, I'd love to get some tail-wheel training, never done that myself

that would probably be my favourite option, but people say you shouldn't switch until you're comfortable with one
the Tiger Moth doesn't actually have a tail wheel, just a skid

@DanHulme might be sensible advice, can't really tell, I regularly switch between the DA20 and the TB10, but I only flew the Katana until I got my license

I think I'd definitely convert to a more useful plane later
one you can actually fly to places in :-)

12:34 PM
yeah, and in the UK you've got the IMC rating, which is nice, but most trainers are not equipped for that

12:55 PM
@falstro what's that?

@DanHulme it's like a lighter version of an instrument rating, allows enroute IFR, but no approaches or departures
a lot cheaper to get as well
at least that's what I hear
not all that familiar with the UK :)

OK
wouldn't be much use for a Tiger Moth anyway
you can't IFR in it

yeah, that's what I meant.
you'll likely switch to a different aircraft after you get your license, as you put it "a useful plane" :)

yes
"useful" is just what I say to tease my mate; "practical" is probably fairer

:)
useful is not that far off the mark though

1:03 PM
yeah
the club has an annual jolly to France in both their Tiger Moths
and they have to have two cars drive along because there isn't enough luggage space

hah :)
yeah, TB10 is a pretty good aircraft in that sense, a four seater and you can carry some luggage along with that unless they're all 200 lbs

1 hour later…
2:08 PM
Heh. Someone at FMY just climbed into the charlie, and they got like "30N.. uh.. for future reference, you're just now coming to the edge of the delta and at 1800 feet, that puts you smack in the middle of the charlie". I love how it's all, yeah, no big deal, whatever, try to get it right next time. :)

3:04 PM
@voretaq7 In this, I was referring to In the light aircraft world there are a few trade-offs to consider. The short version:
But you didn't talk about the long version.

6 hours later…
8:46 PM
Very true:

9:02 PM
@Farhan I heard a rumour they went straight from 8 to 10 because all the even-numbered ones are shit :-)

@DanHulme Both 8 and 10 are even numbers.

yes

So it means that 10 won't be good either?

exactly

I was under the impression that good and bad happens on alternate version, regardless of what they are called.

9:29 PM
Uhm. Where's 2000?

it's in a different product line
NT, 2000, server 2003

hah, ok. Whatever.
