@voretaq7 do you use an app for W&B?
and if so, which?
(i am a fan of AeroBalance, it is very nice)

@egid as of last year, yes (Aviation W&B)
before that I was using an Excel sheet any time it was something I didn't know for sure would be in the envelope (i.e. "more than just me, another human-sized person and some fuel")
aerobalance looks really slick
I like the pre-programmed checkable bits
@egid do I have to enter fuel consumption and time in flight to get the zero-fuel computation and plot? that's a long-standing bug in Aviation W&B that I've been waiting for them to fix & might be worth changing apps at some point :)

no
it just draws the line, always

@egid as god and nature intended!

you specify your fuel state when you compute, and it plots from that to empty
you can specify a landing fuel amount as well
and it'll plot your landing weight
zero fuel is always computed, though

AW&B plots landing weight, and their code is Starting Weight --> Landing Weight --> Zero-Fuel Weight -- if the details to compute landing weight are missing it kinda "stops" and forgets about zero fuel

9:15 PM
hah

buuuuug!

start, flight consumption, ground consumption are the 3 options when you edit any fuel tank

I just tell it every flight is going to be an hour and burn 11 gallons - I don't use it's fuel computations anyway, I do those myself :P

yeah, this doesn't pretend to do fuel calc
it's a single purpose app
you can send W&B via email too

yeah you can do that in AW&B too, and print a load sheet which is pretty useful
now if only I could get foreflight to print a navlog that doesn't suck I'd be all set :-)

9:18 PM

total tease that was. "You can print your flight itinerary" -- awesome! <prints> . . . not so awesome.

i'm a little sad that CloudAhoy is going to cost money now

@egid LIES. Seagulls are never on the ground. They're always flying back and forth across final.

I suppose I do enough of my own instrument recurrency to justify it, but if I was instructing more it would be a no brainer

@egid If it were $25/yr I wouldn't even blink. $45/yr I'm barely blinking
I shell out for the expensive georeferenced foreflight so why the hell not :P

9:20 PM
I did get a year or two of free usage, I shouldn't complain at all

what really upsets me is it won't talk to the Stratus receiver

did you spring for stratus?

which basically means I'm using the GPS in my phone when I replace my ipad
not yet, but I will be this year probably

i like the 2's traffic but again, not sure if worth 1k

when I get the iPad Mini I'll spring for the stratus

9:21 PM
i heart iPad mini
i had an iPad, never used it outside flying
i actually use the mini outside the airplane

@egid you get partial (900MHz) traffic on the 1 don't you?

i dunno, don't have a 1 either

980 or whatever the UAT frequency is
I like 2 because of the improved GPS, and I think I can fabricate a mount for it in the back of the plane where it will be able to get a decent signal and be out of my way

i've got a Dual XGPS150A amzn.to/QguXLI
great little unit

@egid My iPad is exclusively an aviation device - I read forums and shit on it too sometimes but mostly it's for weather and foreflight.

9:23 PM
and foreflight now does a direct-connection thing that gets satellite info etc
mine is foreflight + ereader

I've got the original plug-in bad elf, works great 99% of the time
but I want the Stratus and my free weather/traffic :P

if we drop 1k on cockpit amenities I would probably prefer an AoA meter

I've got no desire for ADS-B in panel-mount equipment. Just wanna get (an IFR approved) WAAS GPS so I'm good for 2020 and flying GPS approaches and I really don't care so much after that :P
(I think my disdain for the panel-mount traffic & weather stuff is it's so much easier to do all the pre-flight route planning in Foreflight. Clearly what is needed is "connected panel" to get to the point where I can send my route to the plane's GPS/FMS from my iPad.)

would 'what is the cheapest ads-b out transponder available' be a legit question for SE?

@egid mmm, not really - because it keeps changing

9:28 PM
sadface
not that often, though, right?

(also the cheap ones SUUUUUUUUCK - there's one that's literally ONE KNOB to enter squawk codes)

aviation loves single-knob inputs
that sounds GREAT

it's like turn - push - turn - push - turn - push - turn - push --- let's take EVERYTHING I HATE about my crappy AT-150 transponder and make it FOUR TIMES WORSE!
@egid nobody loves single input knobs after they've had to use them :P
I keep eyeing the Avidyne IFD 440 and thinking they may have actually got it right
I just can't bring myself to plunk down a deposit until (a) the paint is done and I find out how much the inevitable surprises are gonna cost me, and (b) I can poke at the thing with my own grubby little fingers
@egid the other bit about ADS-B questions is there are (in the US, for most of us GA people) 2 routes - 900something MHz UAT or 1090MHz ES transponders - "cheap" (and in some cases "annoying") varies depending on which you pick.

1 hour later…
10:38 PM
@lnafziger I'll change the message from Unavailable to Missing shortly - thanks!

i kind of love the deleted answer to aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/800/…
:D

pastey?

it's pretty big, basically describes how non-FBW artificial feel works and how often it exists
it's very detailed
and very much not what i wanted :D
it's a great answer to a different question, unfortunately
i've edited a bit to clarify, hopefully

@DannyBeckett Thanks!
@egid Yeah, that's what I thought too.. It was a good answer. Just to a different question. :)
Also, the transponder in my airplane only has "one knob" to set it, lol. It isn't like we have to do it very often.

!!weather MGE

On the other hand, in the newer of the two that I fly, I can enter it on my FMS too instead of using the one knob.... Then I have a full keyboard. Not the old one though. ;-)

I have a Narco with 4 dials. Good times.

I do like the garmin transponder.. Lots of buttons! :)

yeah, the gtx series are nice
not $3.5k nice, but they're nice

10:50 PM
the ADS-B out version (GTX330) is $3,400 and change on Aircraft Spruce, plus install
oops, nope, $4100 with harness

Nice
that's a bargain compared to ours though, I'm guessing.

oh, i'm sure
which is pretty sad, also, but yeah

yeah, exactly

I do really want an AoA indicator now

they start at $1,030 plus install for an alpha systems unit
:\

@Undo Can you make a question out of that somehow? I enjoyed reading everyone's replies... I think it'd make a good question

That's where I'll be tomorrow. Not so bad right now, supposed to get some freezing rain tomorrow though...
@DannyBeckett What as his question?

10:54 PM
@lnafziger click the little grey arrow to the left of my previous message ;)

Is no on mobile client

oh.. it was about if it's ever cheaper to fly than to drive somewhere
it was something I wondered too

Ahh, I don't have time to read all of the replies, but I can tell you "yes" it sometimes is. Especially when you consider the value of your time (consider what that is for someone like Bill Gates).
Also, I used to fly sometimes on light airplanes and avoided paying mileage for the trip in the car and hotel rooms... Worked out cheaper sometimes.
And I was in the office more, so was more productive.

Yeah, that was the gist of the responses @voretaq7 and I gave

Q: I want to be able to fly, yet I can't get a license

tiss wissleYou have to feel my passion here. I want to pilot helicopters, and be able to soar the sky, and have the power to do so. However, I am exempt from obtaining a driver's license, and I can't take any pilot training without one, cold turkey. I do not want to fly illegally, but there's no other opti...

Umm wat

yeah I saw that in the ticker too

10:57 PM
Since when does pilot training require a drivers license? And why would somebody be "exempt"?

Could be somewhere else in the world..
Who knows what they require in India. ;-)
Anyway, headed home. Talk to you all later!

@lnafziger I think that essentially summarises what the other guys said too; that, and it mightn't be too much more expensive, money-wise

I would also like to get a helicopter license for < $5000

@lnafziger seeya!

@DannyBeckett Yeah, it's really a case-by-case basis though. Sometimes it works out, other times it doesn't.
@BretCopeland Me too! :)
cya

10:59 PM
Likewise. 10k for helo would be a steal.

@BretCopeland I don't suppose we have any initial numbers on how the ads on SO are going, traffic-wise?
or generally the line-graph on traffic

@DannyBeckett I'm not sure that's something which will be publicly released.
I will say traffic in general has gone up.

ah ok (I noticed a slight increase in hits/day on the proposal)
but for a slight increase in the average (185 -> 235), I guess it's going very well

Today was a new record for number of new users, but new users doesn't necessarily mean a large change in interaction.

@egid: yeah, I saw that weird helicopter question and came here. :)

11:04 PM
hahah

Dunno what is up with that person.

i'm not sure how to respond to it

@abelenky blind.
;)

i, heh, definitely had my pilot's license prior to my driver's license
so this is either not about the US, or they have been given bad information

I want to put that question "on hold" it's really bad and I don't want it collecting equally terrible answers. Can some people vote to close it?
I can close it in one vote as a mod, but I'd rather have a little bit of community support first.

11:07 PM
> To qualify for the Sport pilot certificate, an applicant must: Have a valid US State drivers license or a current 3rd class or higher Airman Medical Certificate

i'm honestly more concerned about it collecting a ton of down votes than I am bad answers :)

@egid possibly that they've read?

Voted to Close.

@DannyBeckett OR. also, show me the sport helicopters and i'll believe you.
:)

lol yeah

11:08 PM
closed... until it gets fixed at least.

"I want to be a millionaire, but my job only pays me $80K. You must understand my passion!"
"I want a supermodel girlfriend, but I weight 300lbs. You have to feel my passion here!"

@abelenky actually that one is easier to answer - "cut spending a ton, invest wisely"
:)
this one... just not possible

@abelenky Just read your flight sim answer - enjoyed reading it. Do you have an up to date photo of your setup at all?
/what else have you added?

Don't have any new photos yet.... since that photo, I added the TPM panel: http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/tpm.html, and the Trim Wheel: http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/trimwheel.html

I have a small 7" monitor directly above the yoke, that is only the instruments.
Then I don't have any instruments on the big-screen (26"), it is entirely an outside view.
And I reorganized the panel, so it looks more like a real cockpit, and isn't stacked so high that it blocks part of the screen.

huh, saitek's radio panel looks pretty nice
as does their switch panel
they've really expanded that line
they've always made very, very nice hardware

11:16 PM
Its not bad.... its just MASSIVE compared to real radios.
I wish all there stuff was a little closer to "actual size".

ah, it's hard to gauge
sweet
(want in airplane)

:)

1971 wasn't big on annunciator panels

I have the saitek multi-panel which is somewhat nice, but pretty awful compared to what it should have been.
The mode selector knob was literally impossible to turn when I got it. I had to disassemble the panel and the knob, then bend some metal to make it reasonable.

@abelenky Thanks, that's interesting - I need to get started with a setup. I take it you've seen Flight Sim Guy?

11:22 PM
@BretCopeland: Yeah, the mode knobs are very stiff. But the AP knob and radio knob seem ultra-sensitive.
Really, i wish they'd partnered with any well-know radio manufacturer to use their actual hardware, and put Flight Sim electronics in it.

@abelenky yeah, and by the looks it makes you think it's a concentric dial, but it's not.
Feels and functions not even close to how a real airplane's dials work.

With the Cessna Trim Wheel, Cessna Yoke, and Cessna Rudder Pedals, they seemed to acknowledge that realism counts for something. Hoping they come out with new versions of everything.
(re-reading the helicopter question): I like how the poster implies that flying illegally is a viable option... just one they don't want to do. :)
" I do not want to fly illegally, but there's no other options."
(eg. I guess I'll go the illegal route if I have to... because there's no other options)

@abelenky yeah, one of the reasons I wanted it closed.

The Barefoot Bandit did that too... and it didn't end up so badly for him!

@DannyBeckett Urr... not sure how to make a decent question out of that. It seems too broad no matter how one phrases it.

11:35 PM
@Undo: what question?

6 hours ago, by Undo
Just curious, is flying ever cheaper than driving?
43 mins ago, by Danny Beckett
@Undo Can you make a question out of that somehow? I enjoyed reading everyone's replies... I think it'd make a good question
There

not sure how to word it myself, but I still think it's a good question

I don't think flying is ever cheaper than driving.
The advantages are that its faster (especially if there's an obstacle).

exactly.

Consider this driving route: http://goo.gl/maps/tMfvr (3:30 hours)
vs. this flying route: http://skyvector.com/?ll=47.45650857951796,-123.28692627161354&chart=301&zoom=4&plan=A.K1.KBFI:A.K1.KUIL
(less than 1 hour)
However, the downside to flying v. driving.... when you fly somewhere and land, you can't really go anywhere. :) Or you have to procure a car.
When you drive somewhere, you already have your car.

11:41 PM
Someone needs to make a plane with powered landing gear and retractable wings :P

this is why I think it'd make a good question, because people have had very good answers to it

Put it this way: I wouldn't want such a question attached to my name. Anyone else is free to tackle it.
I place no copyright on the idea :P

ok I'll see if I can come up with something that is on-topic in a bit

room topic changed to The Hangar: How do we get controllers on the site? (no tags)

@Undo why wouldn't you?
@abelenky depending on how much your time is worth, faster is cheaper

11:52 PM
@egid Because I think that any way you word it it's going to be too broad.

That is true. But straight-up transportation costs, I think driving is always cheaper per person-mile.

pose a hypothetical trip
:)
with x people

Meh, I'll leave it to someone else.
@BretCopeland Hehe, trying to hint at something?

I know one controller, and one aspiring controller.... maybe I can get them on.
It'd be really cool to have the aspiring controller on as she goes through the Academy and gets her assignment, etc, etc.
I just feel she'd be downvoting me a lot. :)

@BretCopeland the response I got from a friend who is a controller: "...There's some restrictions on what you can do but I'm not sure what they are. I'll look into it."
so, that may be a problem as well
in terms of what the FAA will allow

11:55 PM
@egid how so? They participate in webinars on AOPA where they answer questions and give opinions. I don't see how this would be different.

so maybe we already have controllers? They just won't admit it. :)

@egid As in you can't answer questions on a QA site? Yeesh.

@BretCopeland, I'm sure in those cases they get approval from either the union, or the FAA
we should reach out to the former ATC guy who wrote for Avweb for years

@egid blah, that is idiotic at best.

@BretCopeland, well, it's the government, and ATC is just as dangerous blame/litigation-wise as begin a pilot
avweb.com/authors/6.html is no longer a controller, and keeps a personal blog now

11:59 PM
I've seen lots of interviews with controllers though. They can't possibly have all been FAA approved.

anyway don't quote me, but I'm sure there are at least some restrictions on how ATC can publicly comment
@BretCopeland and how many of them were NATCA reps? :)
(i would wager most)
