The necromancer election fraud question reminds me why I love this place. The tone as well as an exquisitely researched and reasoned answer
And a surprising solution. The best way to get Maximum Necromancy is to subcontract.

Hm?

Q: What is the most amount of election fraud I can commit using necromancy?

PyrotechnicalI have deemed the ignorant masses of several nearby regions to be unfit to rule themselves. Unfortunately, they've established a democracy to determine leadership of their region and continuously refuse to elect myself to rule over every aspect of their lives with an iron fist. Given my loss in t...

It's a question and answer I can only imagine finding here. Given that voting has made me think about why I value this stack, it has particularly hit me how much I value having access to this place

Sounds like maybe similar to when I made an undead-controlling cleric in 3.5 who specialized in controlling undead that make undead under their control.

@Scrollreader worth nominating for our cheese hall of fame?

I believe so, absolutely. It's still tamer than 3.5 chain binding effritti, but it's quite an achievement.

"Haunted West Delivers A Different Perspective On The Weird Western" article by Rob Wieland for Forbes. Tell tall tales of the weird, wild west with this RPG that offers a look at history from the marginalized voices that shaped how we live today.
"Exquisite Crime equal parts paranormal whodunnit RPG and goofy group doodling" article by Chase Carter for Dicebreaker. The latest title from Banana Chan and Sen-Foong Lim comes from the publisher of Alice is Missing.
"Experimental lyric RPGs are pushing the poetic power of roleplaying forward" article by Linda H. Codega for Dicebreaker. By destroying the boundary between players and characters, lyric games innovate new ways to play - or, sometimes, not play at all.
I feel like when Forbes is writing articles about Mother Lands and Haunted West, it's no longer an obvious claim that D&D and its derivatives are the only visible part of the hobby.
Pretty cool.

@Scrollreader LOL, and then you get locked up for electoral fraud because your mom can't file a FEC report to save her life

@AncientSwordRage I use quote marks and italics. Quote marks for what my cleric says, italics to describe actions. Like this. Seson rubs his jaw "Ikarou, did your pet leave this on the carpet?" Anything else is in plain text.

@KorvinStarmast I'm trying to avoid starting the message with "<character name>..."

Then I rub my jaw in italics
"Ikarou, did your pet leave this on the carpet?"
Works either way.

That's fair

@AncientSwordRage just DM'd a great session, players did some nice out of the box thinking in dealing with a fire the sorcerer started with his fire ball, and that kep burning as they battled earth elemental myrmidons. Ended up dousing it with a few barrels of beer ... they regretted the loss of the beer, but that was all they had to extinguisn the fire, so that's what they used.

@AncientSwordRage OK, I'll go and see if there's anything I can contribute, been a while since I dropped by

@KorvinStarmast yay

Latest one I could have answered but it has already been, was "Doh, why didn't they just take The One Ring to the Grey Havens?" in re LoTR.

2:27 PM
@AncientSwordRage From experience playing on IRC, we used one channel for in character, one for out; alternately, logging in to the same channel twice with different user names. In both cases, use the "/me" command to indicate actions, etc. Also convenient with a dice bot.

2:48 PM
@JoelHarmon thats all well and good, but my main issue is wanting to not rely so heavily on starting messages with character name, like 'ASR typed into chat a clarification to his previous question'

2:59 PM
@Someone_Evil The armourer is probably the only tank proper. But generally, tank rarely expresses that job description well. Terms like face or striker create more utility in a 5e environment.

What makes the armourer a tank proper in your eyes?

@AncientSwordRage That's the thing; just like in this chat, the person saying a thing is automatically indicated on the side, not directly part of the message per se.

@Someone_Evil The whole subclass (in that role) depends on the gauntlet feature that actively, like the spirits barb and cav fighter, provides a feature that makes enemies attack at a disadvantage. It also backs it up with the potential for obscene ac that the other two could only achieve at much higher levels and by multiclassing and sticky tools that keep the armourer where it needs to be. The temp hp also soaks reasonably well.
Armourers are generally exceptional defenders (which I think is a better term in a 5e context).

3:17 PM
@Akixkisu this take is consistent with my experience DMing for an armorer.

An optimised build includes even more tools for battlefield control at early levels like compelled duel or misty steps to get where they need to defend other party members.

@JoelHarmon sorry? What's the thing?

@AncientSwordRage Perhaps I'm confused about your desired output. My assumption is you're using some kind of chat system to send messages live, right? In that case, if you can log in twice (e.g. use two browsers and two stack accounts to be present in chat twice), then you can say out of game stuff as yourself, and in game stuff as your character. Then you just need some notation, such as italics, for when your character is taking an action rather than speaking, and you're done.
(Bonus points if you have programmer friends who make channels for speaking different languages, with a bot that posts consistent, attributed gibberish to the Common channel when characters talk.)

@JoelHarmon that's not practical with our set up, but even then, how does that "avoid starting all of your narration as "<character name> ..."?" ?
it's not an issue of distinguishing between IC and OOC

Joel Harmon doesn't have to start all of his posts with his name like this, because it appears on the left automatically.

3:32 PM
that just moves the name to the left?

Yes, but it's not part of the message content itself.

you go from "Joel Harmon doesn't have to start all of his posts with his name like this, because it appears on the left automatically." to "Joel Harmon: doesn't have to start all of his posts with his name like this, because it appears on the left automatically."
@JoelHarmon thats not the issue we have

Then without significant post-editing, I don't see how you can avoid that kind of attribution.

...why is attribution an issue?

Because you're attributing words to a speaker?

3:37 PM
I wanted ideas on improving narration like going from "ASR is typing a message into chat, trying to get his point across" to something like "Typing a message into chat, ASR is trying to get his point across"
Attributing them to the speaker was never an issue

Fizban's Treasury of Dragons introduces a canonical hierarchy of alcoholic beverages in the D&D universe. The rarity of the item Dragon Vessel ranges from Uncommon to Legendary, with each rarity producing new liquids, as well as the liquids of the lower rarities. The alcoholic beverages produced, in order from Uncommon to Legendary are: ale, mead, wine, and whiskey. Thank you for attending my Ted Talk.

@BESW I don't think Barding mentions size at all (though the numbers/scaling are a bit silly nevertheless): dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#MountsandVehicles
> Barding. Barding is armor designed to protect an animal’s head, neck, chest, and body. Any type of armor shown on the Armor table can be purchased as barding. The cost is four times the equivalent armor made for humanoids, and it weighs twice as much.

Here is an answer related to dragon barding:

A: What can a dragon use to increase their armour class?

Dan BThe barding rules state that any armor can be barding, but they're unfortunately quite vague on which creatures are proficient with barding -- see Are mounts proficient in armour (barding)? for more on this topic. If your DM rules that dragons are proficient with armor, then a dragon can wear a ...

Q: Would allowing Draconic Sorcerors to be descended from the new dragon types be balanced?

nick012000The book Fizban's Treasury of Dragons has been released. 4:33 PM
@AncientSwordRage Conventions for differentiating in-character speech/dialogue vs. narration of character actions vs. out-of-character communication can vary from group to group, or person to person. For instance, some people might put OOC communication in parentheses, while in-character narration is italicized, and in-character dialogue is surrounded by quotation marks. Other times, there may be a separate channel/place for OOC chat vs. IC narration and dialogue.
It can vary based on the platform you're using to communicate (and what tools it provides to differentiate this sort of thing) as well. For instance, Roll20 chat allows you to communicate "As:" your display name for the game, vs. as a specific character you have control of in that game. And likewise, Discord allows the creation of multiple channels, so OOC chat can be completely separate from IC chat/narration.

@V2Blast that all sounds like formatting, not narration

Perhaps I'm not understanding your question, then? It seems like you're asking how to avoid (having to) format your narration in a certain way. Could you clarify what you mean?
(It seems like doppelgreener and trogdor already touched on the points I was going to make)

@AncientSwordRage Is there a main site question here? It seems like something we could handle.

@ThomasMarkov I've been trying to find time to ask it, and add enough details to avoid the misunderstandings I've seen in chat
1 hour ago, by AncientSwordRage
I wanted ideas on improving narration like going from "ASR is typing a message into chat, trying to get his point across" to something like "Typing a message into chat, ASR is trying to get his point across"
Or some of BESWs responses worked well

5:09 PM
@AncientSwordRage Ah, okay. I think this example helps. Though it is a tricky distinction to communicate

5:39 PM
If I'm being honest, I'd probably frame challenge that with the idea that starting with the name is actually better
Put another way, I think it would be good for your question to explain why that style is desired

6:05 PM
> And regardless of whether this is acceptable or you don't consider it a 'problem', at least two of the players (my self and my fellow player) would like to change this.
@Exempt-Medic I will try to add that in though
@Exempt-Medic hmmm it's not any particular style that's desired, just variation

added the tag

@ThomasMarkov thanks

6:26 PM
@AncientSwordRage Ah that makes sense now, thank you

@Exempt-Medic Glad it could be cleared up

@AncientSwordRage How does converting an answer to a comment work? Can you add it to another answer as a comment?

@ThomasMarkov yes

Okay.
So my flag does make sense lol

Good good

I flagged this answer for a mod to convert it to a comment on my answer.

@ThomasMarkov they may just delete it 🙃

Call me no fun, but if you want to be a fire breathing squirrel in my campaign, you're going to have to get more creative than to just be a dragonborn druid.

6:50 PM
How would you do it, Mr NoFun?

Ask the wizard or sorcerer to cast Dragon's Breath on me.

@AncientSwordRage play something other than 5e =)
s/5e/D&D

I played Scum and Villainy with NautArch last week. It was tons of fun.
It was quite the paradigm shift from D&D, but I adjusted quickly.
I rolled a success to inconspicuously land our ship on the exterior of a space station. So the GM asked me how I did it. Naturally, being a D&D player, I expected to be told at least what the station looked like. Turns out, unlike D&D, I can just make that stuff up, which was super cool.

@V2Blast Yeah, I misremembered. They reproduced the Large Animal text from 3.5 and didn't adjust to account for the fact they left out the 3.5 text for animals of other sizes; so squirrels and elephants have barding that's the same cost and weight.

@BESW Ah, that explains why the barding rules seem so ridiculous

Yup. They took complicated 3.5 rules and "simplified" them by... only copying out part of the text.

 Meant to get this out earlier today. I have a project I intended to share today but didn’t get it done in time. So here’s my Cavandoli lacework so far, in pictures because that’s all I have time for this week.  I’ll be better on getting something out next week — I had a bunch of stuff this week.  Orange is meant to be pumpkins, and is in progress. Purple is just a test of slits

@BardicWizard Very cool lace!

@AncientSwordRage Ahh fair enough. I hover around Gaming mainly, occasionally pop over to SF&F and maybe Movies & TV, but this is my main chat space cos it's got a good balance of timezones, common interest and creativity :)
@KorvinStarmast Shall have to let me know anything that catches your fancy. So far all I've seen is the blurbs they've used for advertising. Psionic Dragons/Dragonborn sounds cool
