My d&d group that was having all the trouble last week actually seems to have resolved the problem!!!!!!!!!!!

Good to hear. How'd it get resolved?

@MikeQ We talked today for most of our session — we talked a bit about the specific incident and how we felt and what we thought went wrong. Then we made a list of things that we wanted to exclude or limit in the game, and figured out how we could write some specific stuff out of the setting without ruining everything we’ve done; afterwards we played the scene over again to go better
It was less like a formal lines and veils list and more like basically saying what was absolutely not happening and to what extent we were okay with some other stuff
I’m really grateful for all the help people here gave me and all the advice from people who’ve done this before
It really helped.

5:45 AM
Nice! I’m happy to hear your group is talking about these things!

Turns out everyone had a different idea of where the implicit lines of ok/not ok were, and although some things were the same for all of us, it was kinda good that we explicitly spelled stuff out bc now everyone knows what’s uncomfortable in a bad way and what’s uncomfortable in a way that we’re okay with (basically, what uncomfortable topics do we feel we can explore safely and what do we definitely not want to explore)
Like there’s definitely two or three things on our list that seem like they wouldn’t be so bad, but actually make some or all of us really uncomfortable (my irrationally discomforting thing is book burnings, for instance)

Yeah, that's the sort of thing where you could know somebody pretty well and still be surprised, so it's important not to just assume.
And hopefully now your group will be more comfortable to speak up if lines change or new things come up, before it gets to be such a big problem.

Thoughts from Twitter, would Critical Role have worked if it was played as 4e d&d?

...why wouldn't it work in 4e?
(Maybe need to define "work")
Produced equally compelling narratives? Within the realm of LPs of D&D-likes, not really a system issue, that's down to the actors, producers, and editors.
Been faster to respond to suggestions about how to make it more inclusive and less bigoted, rather than refuse to change until a Big Name or personal friend took up the call, and then fail to generalize the lessons so that the pattern would have to be repeated for every specific problem? Not a system issue.
Become the dominant voice of the edition in fandom, spin off hundreds of copycats, and reinforce D&D's position as a synecdoche for the entire TRPG industry? Hard to tell, the 'controversy' over 4e had a lot of people being more open to thinking of their hobby as something which exists beyond a single franchise.

The argument on twitter was combat length

Editing.

@BESW that's my response too
Several wargaming channels have done the same thing

9:31 AM
System absolutely matters for many many things, but... much much less when considering things like the pacing of an edited event.

@BESW I agree there
40k in 40min is marketed on keeping episodes under 40min I'm sure a d&d game could do the same.

(I would have to log out of Twitter entirely to see the conversations, because I have so many of the phrases muted that I can only see the one post you directly linked me to, and the post it's quote-tweeting.)

Talking about role-playing games on video, did you ever look at the villagesong Boardgame/RPG?

I have not.

Looks like I never shared it here?

Villagesong is a boardgame you don't win, but you play a leader of a village and face change by accepting or rejecting it. At the end, your choices form a song your village is remembered by

I'll look at it later! Right now it's fish night but we're running late 'cause we took a care package to some friends.

10:35 AM
Hope they're ok

Nothing dramatic, just caring for a baby and a parent at the same time. Brought them some dinner, a baby monitor we'd used with my dad, and some Baha'i historical photos to share with the youth they're working with.

Sounds excellent; enjoy your fish

@AncientSwordRage Not only combat length, but the need for everyone to be keyed into the battle scenario all the time. To make 4E work everybody has to know everybody else's characters, which is great for people who like to do that, but not so great for less mechanics-focused or less experienced players, especially in a large party.

@Glazius I can say, not knowing the other characters in depth can be beneficial to the roleplaying: I have a solid idea what the other characters in the WtA round I am in since a decade have in skills, but at times they surprise me by informing about skills or feats I wasn't aware of, drawing nice spotlights.

Q: We need to talk about late votes to “policy” metas

Someone_EvilLet me start by trying to give a definition. We’re here talking about meta discussions which strongly guide or dictate behaviour, and in particular where there are opposing, incompatible options and – by nature of the problem we’re talking about here – disagreement about which to go with. For lac...

Tried out Lancer yesterday.

- Start was slow, but I wouldn't even entirely blame that on the game being in text, since clearly everyone or nearly everyone was doing a lot of lookups and thinking before replying.
- The importance of positioning is cool. This seems to be achieved by the largely artificial calibration of movement and range ratios to be comparable (per turn). And the importance of cover/obstacles.
- I want to see more reaction play, but so far that looks promising too.
- I am thinking that a lot of the win-or-lose outcome depends on ability to maintain top shape. I expect thin

When a very old question, which was fine when asked but would now be off topic, shows up in the Close Votes queue, should I vote to close (potentially unnecessarily bumping it), or vote to leave open (even though the close reason is valid)? I know I shouldn't go muckraking for old questions to close, but not sure about how I should treat them from the review queue.

@A_S00 VTC does not bump it. Closing them keeps them from being necromanced.
