@BESW that is true they do do a distressing tale out ending in a strange way they don't prepare you for
It definitely doesn't fit with the rest of the game
And definitely made me upset at the time

ooo updoots

8:23 PM
@Medix2 Hmm, I thought this was a nice basis that only needed a few bits of icing to make a great cake.

@KorvinStarmast I feel like Medix wrote that on their phone while doing something else. The formatting is so uncharacteristic of Medix.
There's a unique style to Medix's answers, I can usually tell they wrote it before I see the nametag. Here is a characteristic example.

@TheOracle oh god, what have I done D:
XD

@AncientSwordRage You created a broken product. Have you been reading WotC's content creation strategies?

@ThomasMarkov yes... I mean no...

8:42 PM
I don't get it: WHAT is wrong with asking the community how they want to reword the arcane archer tag when I only could fix it to fit pathfinder and 3.5 properly and not whatever 5e did with it?!

Nothing. The meta question only has 2 downvotes, so only 2 folks disagreed with the proposal.

@Trish So we have community curation processes in place to handle this organically from the review queue, and generally we take things to meta when those processes fail for some reason. I imagine the downvotes are because you took it to meta before community curation even took a crack at it.

@ThomasMarkov I took Magus to the meta years ago because the tag was so horrible wrong. That one was like even worse but the best attempt I would have made would be to re-define it as a prestige class, which would be equally wrong. Meta is community curation.

@ThomasMarkov What? Since when can't we propose new ideas by posting a meta question?

the search for the perfect description really should be Meta.

8:47 PM
@MikeQ I don't know, youll have to speculate with me on why the downvoters downvoted it.

And I would guess because it skips the acknowledgement of that. Something to the effect of your comment reply on the q (eg. "I see a need for a better description, but can't think of one myself"). That lack wasn't personally downvote worth though

@Trish Right, but should we be using meta to do curation when the usual main site tools haven't had a chance to be implemented yet?
I think it is generally seen that meta discussions supersede our usual curation tools, so now I feel it is inappropriate to handle this issue (that we should be able to handle just fine without meta) without going through the meta discussion.
And I think the issue with was that it had problematic usage that warranted meta discussion, right?

@Trish Sometimes people simply disagree, even when incorrect. That's a problem inherent to the SE approach. Otherwise, if you want to take a hard-charging attitude (even when you are correct, as you are in these cases) there is sometimes pushback on that alone

@ThomasMarkov that is plain wrong.

In this case I do think the downvotes are probably not the most valid
But without feedback from the downvoters we'll never know

8:57 PM
Meta is the place where we should discuss what we do in deeper changes. Altering a tag so extensively is a deeper change.

Yeah, there shouldn't be some initial bureaucratic barrier that gets in the way of meta discussions. Proposals for a fix shouldn't need to wait for the content curation tools to get around to fixing it.

@ThomasMarkov it was cropping up in some questions where it was clearly not Pathfinder. Just like arcane archer was used on non-5e. The tag description however was game centric.
or rather, it should
those 41 are all Pathfinder questions about it.

@MikeQ yeah that’s not at all what I meant, but okay.

14 questions, not sure all the answers warrant the tag be added to their questions (it usually doesn't)

I don’t actually care, I think the meta discussion is fine. I was just speaking in general terms about how we don’t have to take everything to meta because we have tools for dealing things without meta discussion, and that the downvotes were likely because someone felt it wasn’t necessary because we have tools that don’t require meta discussion.

9:03 PM
@Someone_Evil ah, true...

So yeah, it’s raining outside. Peace.
You asked What was wrong with it, so I was just offering an explanation for why someone might have downvoted it.

14 and 9 for pathfinder and 3.5 respecively.

And I do think this is just fixing a description. It's fine to have a discussion about it, but (IMO) it's always better to explain why you needed a discussion (same idea as mainsite Qs showing their Whys), and we already have several discussions demonstrating that making this kind of change is fine
@Trish If I saw it correctly, one was for both, but that's nitpicking and not really relevant

@Someone_Evil might be, but that's still... 22 non-D&D-5E questions.

I already said it was nitpicking didn't I? :)
With all the faff around nailing down a definition I'm coming back to a thought I've had about archetypes and overlapping options. How many different ways are there to make an Arcane Archer in 5e?

9:18 PM
@Someone_Evil I'd say zero, since I think ArAr is a waste of design space. The Ranger already exists. 😎 Granted, that's my opinion. Also, Ar Ar is what a pirate says when he stutters.
which makes Arcane Archer something made from cane that a pirate sits on when sipping rum drinks on the beach
Hat, coat, exit ...

@KorvinStarmast I suppose let me clarify that idea, how many different ways are there to make a "Archer with archery relevant magic" in 5e?

Would it help to rename it to Magic Archer or something like that?

@Someone_Evil Sounds like a main site question that is maybe too broadly scoped

@KorvinStarmast It's solidly idea-gen, really :)

9:21 PM
Well if we think about classes that can really take advantage of using a bow, we have Fighter, Rogue, and Ranger

I'm not thrilled by the subclass implementation either, but I'm faulting that to the fighter subclasses being too small to anything interesting with

Fighter, Rogue, Ranger, and Bard can all make a magical archer pretty easily.
In fact, Bards can probably do it better than the rest of them.

@ThomasMarkov Ranger. Done. MAgical Archer. Or is it a Druid with a bow?

@ThomasMarkov The lore bard: this edition's mimic PC sub class. 😁

forgot about bard antics

9:24 PM
I'm sure there's one in the Artificer class too (because why not?). And probably one in the more martial Cleric domains (again, why wouldn't there be?)

Gunslinger also can go magical spellshooter.

yeah but where do we draw the line of magic being relevant to archery?

Wouldn't you actually want Valor for this? The weapon features are useful and I thought you already had good spells for it?
But it's been a long time since I barded

@G.Moylan Nowhere? It's magic. It can be related to archery whether it makes sense or not

DM note: if the monsters/NPCs have a *bead of force*, and use it, one (or more) of the party PCs is out of the fight if they fail a DC 15 Dex save. The paladin failed.
(Granted, 5 of 7 players showed up, so he played one of the other PCs for the rest of that fight). On the third round of his being all bottled up, paladin dropped his trousers and mooned the bad guy who had tossed it. (This got a laugh from the other players)

9:27 PM
@Upper_Case I meant in the sense of what classes could really constitute an "arcane archer" vs a class that has a bow and can cast unrelated spells

@Someone_Evil swords. I played a ranged swords bard and its was pretty broken.

PCs were all level 6.

@ThomasMarkov Did you shoot rapiers out of your bow like arrows?

@ThomasMarkov Oh, I thought swords had wordings limiting it to melee, but maybe not?

@Someone_Evil nope.

9:28 PM
@G.Moylan My wife once shot daggers out of her eyes at me, is that the same thing?

@G.Moylan I still say "same difference". Archery is almost totally undifferentiated as a method of fighting in 5e

@Someone_Evil Words limit a bard?!?

A level 1 Wizard with a crossbow, in the classic 3.5e style

> Whenever you take the Attack action on your turn, your walking speed increases by 10 feet until the end of the turn, and if a weapon attack that you make as part of this action hits a creature, you can use one of the following Blade Flourish options of your choice. You can use only one Blade Flourish option per turn.

@ThomasMarkov "twirls crossbow around fingers and slips into holster"

9:29 PM
@G.Moylan exactly.

@ThomasMarkov There's a touch of awkwardness around weapon proficiency and fighting style, but I suppose the two flourishes that work with ranged might make it worth it
And I sorta dislike using a sharing resource on yourself in general

@Someone_Evil if you want to really break it, take a level of fighter.

@Upper_Case I prefer the Troll-Shaman with a Compound bow right out of chargen.

@Trish Yikes... they wouldn't even fire a shot if I ran across them. I think I'd just comply with whatever they wanted

9:46 PM
@Upper_Case Best part: it can be even uglier if instead of shaman you use a tradition that allows you to house a spirit in your body (possession) to get some extra points of strength. Strength 15 Bows are totally legal but hit like anti-tank-rifles!

@Trish That image really makes me want to play some Shadowrun

@Upper_Case Mission accomplished! :P

@Trish Lol. Now just convince my DM!

@Upper_Case Tell him you want to show him the awesomeness that is a troll-Rabbi with a bow calling himself Hoobin Rod!

@Trish Love it! And the DM loves Shadowrun almost as much as me, but he hated running it. Which was a shame, because the campaign and setting he created were really cool. And we went straight from that awesomeness to Tyranny of Dragons. Ugh.

9:56 PM
@Upper_Case Why that and not.... Dragon Dawn/Dragon Knight/Dragon Rest?!
Or... In Search of Dragons/Dragon Magic/Dragon Keep?

No idea why he picked it. I'd been hoping it was a brief filler, but it's been over two years of agonizingly slow progress (though it's appropriate to the module and group size, especially given the extra homebrew stuff he's put into it). But I'd rather it just... end
At least we could move on to the vastly superior Rise of Tiamat. Or anything else, really

Tyranny of Dragons is Hoard of the Dragon Queen + Rise of Tiamat (+revision) isn't it?

@Someone_Evil yes
God was that really 2 years ago now?

@Someone_Evil It is. Rise is awesome (I read it by accident, not realizing it was a sequel to Hoard), but Hoard is so awkward of a module that my advice to anyone interested would be to just skip it
Hearing a 5-minute recap would be more fun than slogging through it

HotDQ has the distinction and deficiency of being the first official published adventure for 5E

10:09 PM
@Someone_Evil But... Dragonlance's Thaksis is the superior Dragon goddess!

@Trish Tiamat hated that

(technically it's the very same dragon goddess XD)
@Upper_Case Dragonlance is superior anyway. but then again, I am QUITE slanted because Dragonlance has Matafleur, most badass cute elder red dragon babysitter... Which is exactly *what makes it the superior campaign.

Q: What counts as damage by an ammunition when using Arcane Shot in regards to poison?

SilentAxeI am currently building DnD-5e Arcane Archer (from Xanathar's Guide to Everything) character and considering how beneficial it is to take the Poisoner feat (from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything ). In particular the relevant section of the feat reads: [TCoE:p80] When a creature takes damage from t...

11:34 PM
@Trish poser 😋 Tiamat is the boss.

@KorvinStarmast Thakisis Rulez because she is the Queen of Matafleur, big mommy dragon babysitter! You can't best Matafleur as the best red dragon ever.

@Trish Smaug pwns Matafleur. .😋

@KorvinStarmast Smaug's a poser. Being blind on one eye and still going to battle with a much fitter dragon with full eyesight, that's galls!

Korvin, you should put your tongue back in your mouth :)

@Trish Dragonlance has structural issues that contaminate all items in it.
Did any of you ever run the original Dragonlance module, as written, in AD&D 1e?
I still have it, and the other three modules are still in shrink wrap. The players hated it. (Draconians in particular)

11:40 PM
@KorvinStarmast I read the whole modules to write an answer, plus the novels.

I enjoyed the novels, muchly.
I bought them when they came out.
(Except that I hate kender)
Moronic variation on hobbits
Kitiara and Tanis are two of my fave DL characters

The nnovels were great, and Matafleur inspired me to torture some players of another GM by handing him a module where a red dragon ran an orphanage for gobos...

The Twins trilogy was probably their best work.

orphans that were orphaned by the very heroes.

Oh, and gully dwarves? Gimme a freakin' break
(gagging sound is heard from Starmast household)

11:43 PM
@KorvinStarmast nah, Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Because Matafleur :3
<- Biased
Though the twins come in close second

OK, I guess that there is no argument about taste. 😁
Gustibus non disputandum est and all that
(FWIW, dwarves as comic relief in LoTR movies annoyed me. Gimli as a character deserved better than that)

FWiW, Mrs Grindtooth also is a perfectly fine black dragon example.
She spreads the evil of algebra, foreign languages and geography with her boarding school.
