@nitsua60 hmm, couldn't find it (at least not ctrl-f on the chapters :P)

12:32 AM
@NautArch I might have misremembered. Or that might have been changed after playtest?

1:07 AM
@Axoren did you look at the Mouseguard link I posted up?

1:22 AM
@AncientSwordRage I missed it, I think. Could you relink?
I think I tried to bookmark it and it didn't save.

I was gonna read through all the links people dropped over the past couple of days tonight after D&D with the handful of us that are working on the system.

Re-reading, it's not perfect, but I remember liking how it was handled

@AncientSwordRage Thanks.

Hiya!

[wave]

How’s it going?

Not enough TRPG in my life.
You?

@BESW today could have gone way better, but I’m still alive, so that’s good

"Haven't assumed room temperature yet."

5:19 AM
@BESW pretty much.
It’s mostly stress. It’s 24 days to the first AP for me, 27 to the other one I’m taking, and the cardigan I’m designing is on the 5th hook and 3rd yarn in a futile attempt to get something I like and allows me to get a second repeat of the bee chart on the back

Oof

The cardigan is the source of most of the stress. I’m making it based on a character I like, who’s a swarm of bees, from a really cool webcomic, so it’s going very slowly in an attempt to make it good.
In theory, this was a better idea than the reality.

...Gavotte?

@BESW from skin horse, yeah. My best friend liked it so I gave it a try and now I really like it!

Such a great comic.
I played a version of Sweetheart in a TRPG a while back.

@doppelgreener @AlexMitan: Captain's Fancy Valentine Sweetheart is a Neurotic black ops social worker who is always happiest when There’s a protocol for that and firmly believes that Things need reasons! She's an Uplifted Canadian sled dog who is slowly learning Setting a good example is thankless work.

5:32 AM
I've been reading it recently. I'm up to October 2016...

If you can, leave positive comments! She's in a hiatus right now that's partly due to the comments getting so consistently negging that it's kind of exhausting.
@Adeptus It's wild to see her art style change so much even over the course of Skin Horse, much less from the early days of Narbonic.

@BESW That's terrible. I haven't seen any negative comments on what I've read so far (I don't always read all the comments, but when I do...)

The old comments on skin-horse.com got purged in a server error a few years ago but they were mostly very good (eddurd's filks are a thing of glory and I'm glad I saved some of the best), but in the last year or so a few vocal people started leaving "this is repetitive and predictable, how lazy" type comments almost every day.
I've been a fan of Garrity's work since about midway through Narbonic.
Her co-author for Skin Horse, Wells, started out by writing epic and hilarious fanfiction for Narbonic which Garrity then illustrated as a periodical for Sunday filler.

@BESW They may have recovered them somehow? So far I'm seeing plenty of comments (including filks) dated shortly after each strip was released.

@BESW I’ll try!

5:45 AM
@Adeptus The comment purge was mid 2012, I think. You'll see some of the earlier strips have Kay Gilbert copy-pasting an archive of older comments.
Skin Horse makes Digger look svelte.

@BESW The hiatus is actually why I’m doing this; it made me realize things I love might not be around forever so I should do the projects based off of things I like now, rather than putting them off until it’s too late.
@BESW that was prob before I was born!

@BardicWizard [feels very very old]
But yeah, Narbonic ran from 2000 to 2006 and I picked it up in early college which would've been 2003/4ish.

I’m just young.

6:15 AM
@BESW [feels very very very old]
I started university about 10 years before you

Q: Roll Xd6, keeping highest value and adding +1 for each duplicate of that value?

Man_Over_GameI'm trying to set something up on Anydice, but I'm having some trouble wrapping my mind around some of the language Anydice uses. What would I need in order to roll a set of dice, keep the highest value, and add +1 for each copy of that die? For instance, if I rolled [3, 5, 5], I'd end up with a ...

2 hours later…
9:39 AM
@BESW Ooh. i'd be interested in how that turns out.

10:03 AM
@BESW if you're able, let us know how it turns out!

10:18 AM
Okay, I made the pesto but haven't served it yet. Tasting just a little by itself, I feel like the only significant distinction is that maybe the carrot greens absorb the flavors more than the other greens I usually use. Will report again after dinner.

11:01 AM
Legacy of the Lost by BasiliskOnline. A Belonging Outside Belonging game of community and discovery in a post-apocalyptic sc-fi galaxy.

11:38 AM
@doppelgreener @AncientSwordRage I overdid the lemon so can't really tell if the carrot did anything subtle! Maybe it's a little sweeter? It did make the texture a bit more gritty, because I kept the stems in and they don't blend super well.

11:53 AM
@BESW hmm, maybe worth more experimentation

And my pesto tends to pack a punch. In addition to the more expected garlic, olive oil, lemon or calamansi juice, parmesan cheese, and walnuts, it's got ginger and chili sesame oil and black pepper and finadenne' denanche' (local hot pepper condiment).

12:28 PM
sounds amazing
I've never head of using walnuts, ginger or chilli

walnuts are a relatively common replacement for the ridiculously expensive pine nuts.

that's good to know

ginger and chili oil, are more of "Things you have to actively stop BESW from adding to whatever he's making."

ahh, we all have those

I've also used almonds instead of pine nuts, but I prefer walnuts.

12:31 PM
mine is smoked paprika and copious amounts of lemon juice
@BESW I try to avoid using almonds in most things
mainly due to how they're grown in california

That's very reasonable.

I guess? It's something I can easily give up, and it's a pain to find non-Californian almonds
Not sure what difference it actually makes, but I feel better about it so...

I feel like ginger is a strange thing to add to pesto

@BaconyRevanant you have to actively stop BESW from adding it though
I can definitely see it working
Also, all this time I've been visualising Homous...

I'm not saying it's bad, just that it seems strange
Have any of you done alfredo sauce before?

12:46 PM
Yes, albeit with varying success

@AncientSwordRage yes
Spicy ginger-garlic hummus is most excellent.

@BESW I mean my brain went from pesto -> Humous straight away
@BESW it sounds it!

Is there an easy way to determine the score of an answer on a given date other than having to manually add and subtract various vote totals?

@Medix2 ask someone in chat to do it?

Guess I'll start doing addition and subtraction XD

1:35 PM
@Medix2 You gonna make a graph of the post scores

@ThomasMarkov Not worth it

But it might be.

I'm just realizing how undefined the faq process is, but that's the case on almost every Stack...

Yeah our FAQ proposal system is kind of in limbo, I think.

@Medix2 any way, the discussion that we had at the time should be in the transcripts.

1:37 PM
@Akixkisu Sorry, I don't follow
What transcripts, and who having what discussion when?
Yay English not having clusivity :(
@Akixkisu I will also say, I upvoted your Meta answer because parts of it, I do agree with and I feel some of the processes mentioned are worthy of discussion

@Medix2 the discussion about the faq-proposal about the "don't guess the system policy" that I and I think one or two moderators had at that time, when I commented on it. Which should be sometime on or after 17th of nov 20.
So if you are also curious about that, then it should be available.
Not sure if it was this room or dragons though, but one should be able to find them if there is interest.

2:11 PM
Wow, the mods have a lot to think about with the community check in.

2:26 PM
@Medix2 chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/56184988#56184988 I feel like there might be a few lines missing that might have happened elsewhere, but I experienced it as a good and productive exchange, so I dug it out.

Very nice description of how time is understood during combat by linksassin here, I wish this was in the BR and PHB.

@KorvinStarmast I like the table, but it is a good description.
It is unforunate that the time section and the combat section are so far apart.

3:08 PM
@Akixkisu agree. There are a number of "why did they organize it this way?" questions that I had, but one that trogdor had that really put a finger on it. When Trodgor was going to play a paladin (his most recent experience being with 4e) he was a bit frustrated that he looked into the Paladin sectio nof Chapter 3, and none of his spells were there. He said that they ought to have put the Spell lists in the PC Class section, Ch 3, and the longer I have thought about it the more I agree
(This based on he and I getting our level 1 chars put together when we played some of ToA together on line, discussions in discord)

@KorvinStarmast I assume it comes from a misinformed understanding of the players using the index to search for concepts. WotC's approach favours researching all related information to an idea via index entries. But they are also not exhaustively doing that. I wonder if they ever talked about that part of organising.

@Akixkisu Given how bad their index is, and their table of contents (the 2018 Basic Rules has a decent ToC) I can only say "who the heck was the tech writer in charge on this project?"

3:26 PM
@KorvinStarmast that is a very interesting question.
The credits are kind of murky dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/credits

@Akixkisu the editing team?

@AncientSwordRage I don't think we have good information to assume their roles like that.

@Akixkisu not for certain
but it would be a line of inquiry

4:13 PM
I'm starting to feel like all these echo knight questions are really "ask your DM". THey wrote one heckuva unclear subclass.

@NautArch it's really unclearly written

@AncientSwordRage It is. Frustratingly so. Thamt whole wildemount book is (and tash'as.)

@NautArch Tasha's isn't quite as bad though, right?

@AncientSwordRage It has quite a few moments from my perusal (not very in depth)

I wonder how much the echo knight looks as good and clear as the other subclasses to people less experienced at D&D?

4:17 PM
IF you don't know the problems, it'll look fine.

Yeah, the spells and subclasses from Wildemount definitely lack polish. As a campaign setting and lore book it is very well done though.

@NautArch oh yeah, from what I heard, but just not as bad
My guess is people must assume that the details of how Images work is well defined, but squirrelled away somewhere

The Echo Knight is definitely the chief offender. There are some issues with the Chronurgy wizard, but not as bad as the Echo Knight, and the graviturgy wizard is actually pretty okay.

I"m trying to think of what things are similar to the echo, but i don't think there are any.
Spiritual weapon doesn't occupy a space
Telekinesis moves physical objects

@NautArch yes, the lack of polish is noteworthy

4:22 PM
Ugh, i think i'm going to write up a generic answer about table decision.
for all of them (which honestly is clear in the other echo knight questions we have that this is unclear)

@NautArch Please.

@ThomasMarkov first one up, happy for edits before I copypasta to the others.

Id suggest that these conversations need to happen prior to choosing the subclass at all, because most of these situations are almost certainly inevitable.

^^
adding

Which will help better set the player's and DM's expectations going into battle.
Basically, the feature is so odd, that if you don't talk about it beforehand, you're gambling on how your DM will rule on it.

4:29 PM
I'd capitalize "Echo Knight" but that is a nitpick :)

@bobble done and done

you left out one instance
> none of those have the same properties of the echo knight.

@NautArch They super-rushed the playtest on Wildemount, I know.
(Like, "here's a thing, can you give us feedback in two weeks?")

This sentence is a pretty wild ride:
> Helping make sure everyone understands the need gray areas, what needs to be agreed on, and that judgements may come up that require an immediate ruling may happen will go a long way to to mitigating any unhappiness and setting the expectation that this subclass is a little loosey goosey.

@nitsua60 surely it's at the printers by then?
@ThomasMarkov it ends in 'loosey goosey' so it gets a pass from me

4:33 PM
I think it's a great stylistic representation of the subclass.
:P

Before my last copy-pasta, I'll take an edit on that from y'all :P

I'll try to fix it lol

@nitsua60 Which means that whomever is / was in charge of project management doesn't know how to use a time line nor an even flow chart. {remaining comments censored} Nor do they know the 1/3 - 2/3 rule.

@NautArch Try it now

@KorvinStarmast 1/3 - 2/3 ?

4:35 PM
4 mins ago, by bobble
> none of those have the same properties of the echo knight.
should be "Echo Knight" :)

@AncientSwordRage If you have a deadline~timeline and have others whose plans depend on knowing your plan to make "the project plan" work, allocate no more than, and ideally less than, 1/3 of the time line in getting your overarching plan put together and to them so that thay have 2/3, or more, time to get theirs to you so that the whole plan can be assembled.

Alright, I got the changes made to all three answers.

@ThomasMarkov Just a note, judgement is a perfectly valid spelling

@Medix2 It set off my spellcheck lol

So would grey and channelled I assume
Or gray and channeled, fun with English

4:40 PM
According to thesaurus.com, "judgment remains the preferred spelling in British legal proceedings"

bah, who cares about Britain

@ThomasMarkov OBJECTION!
@bobble ::cries in tea, union jacks and thoughts of blighty::
@ThomasMarkov I suspect that's a particular legal term, and although we may be rules lawyer, we're not in rules court.

When I was in school I was told judgement was incorrect.

@ThomasMarkov When I was in school I was told 5 minus 8 was undefined, as was the square root of negative one.

Is this another artefact of Webster deciding certain words should be spelled differently?

4:46 PM
I wonder if I can find that meme along the lines of "We teach you things and then we teach you how those things were lies"

@Medix2 In the sense that there is no group structure on the naturals, this is true.

@ThomasMarkov In the sense that other countries do not exist, judgement being wrong is true too
But yeah, English spelling is an absolute mess and it's no wonder we have so many edge cases and oddities with words. Like singeing

I imagine youll find much more widespread agreement that the natural numbers are only a monoid than you will that other countries dont exist.

@Someone_Evil even if it is, it's by no means the only time someone's done that

@Medix2 Miss me with this silliness.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica My favourite thing, is people assuming words/phrases like "Normalcy" or "do the needful" are new inventions of those who have corrupted english, when actually, they're archaic phrases that persisted past their use in the UK
one of my favourite 'idiot changes' made to English is that we used to have Ile and Iland, one was a corruption of French (?) and changed to Island to match the original spelling in that language. Ile was changed to follow suit, but no previous spelling of Ile has an S in it.
@NautArch ...is the plan to dupe close those Echo Knight questions?

@AncientSwordRage Just to put this all in perspective, I_land means something different that Island if you are a pilot, but if you say it quickly they sound similar. 😁

Hi @Catofdoom2!

you noticed i logged on

@KorvinStarmast Do you want the Aisle seat, or the seat where you can see the Isle?

@AncientSwordRage hello

4:59 PM
@Catofdoom2 there's a little animation when you join chat

@AncientSwordRage Tibetan or some such: 'oh hi did not notice you'.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica ?

fire drill
brb

@AncientSwordRage Would you believe that English might be not the deepest orthography?

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica yes

5:00 PM
Good. ^_^

I think it was nativlang who did Tibetan orthography? Wild stuff

@AncientSwordRage Yes. 😎

The whole thing is Moot
whether that means it's worth discussing or not is up to the reader to decide

i'm back

lol
back in 6th grade they said it was a fire drill but it was an actually a gas leak
my players are attempting to make a deal with a high-level fiend. what fiend should I use?

5:25 PM
How are they attempting to make a deal if nobody knows who the fiend is?

@AncientSwordRage
they are doing some dumb rutial from one of the books

@Catofdoom2 you should probably know what book and which ritual
unfortunately I have to leave work otherwise I'll be home too late

@Catofdoom2 Throw a curveball: a VtM kind of Fiend.

Not sure what book or ritual you're talking about. In any case, if there's 0% chance that it could result in combat (maybe it talks to them through the book or a disembodied voice), then you don't need a stat block. Just say it's some fiend entity that's appropriate for the setting.

@AncientSwordRage identical answers aren't identical questions

5:53 PM
its apparently greater fiend
or grand fiend

@NautArch not always, but it definitely was ni this case
You guys closed it for no reason, and it's just created excess clutter on the site
"Can the Echo move through [thing]?" and "Can the Echo move through [Other, similar thing]?" is not a useful distinction
@AncientSwordRage Oh oh, I know this one! The answer is "Because English is 3 language roots in a trench coat, Germanic, Latin, and Greek"

6:08 PM
@NautArch I think that must be just how we treat it over on Sci-Fi
@BaconyRevanant try a creole of high norse and old English
@Catofdoom2 they can request that, but as the DM you can and should (sometimes) say no

@AncientSwordRage Well, it was a year before release or so. Just a much shorter than usual playtest window.
@KorvinStarmast That all sounds correct. Aided, IIRC, by a change in the staff responsible for that particular part of products' life cycle.

@nitsua60 ahhhh
@KorvinStarmast I've just finished a draft of my estimation article if you want a look

@BaconyRevanant ...rifling through other language's pockets for spare words.

@BaconyRevanant I got some details wrong maybe? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_English_creole_hypothesis
@Mithical hello SHOUTY MCSHOUTERSON

Which is to say that for many years I was pretty impressed with the playtest process. Over a year out from release, give a few months to run an adventure or test some content, and feedback questionnaires that had obvious thought put into them. (Questions about specific NPCs, or how challenging X was, or how proposed subclass Y compares with established subclasses A, B, and C.)

6:18 PM
Oh my, so many Echo Knight questions
Someone must be playing an Echo Knight

It's my favorite sherson! Hi @nitsua60!

@AncientSwordRage With some Gaelic as a garnish
@Mithical It's amazing how many loan words English has, especially from French

@doppelgreener I had to Google that very carefully

@AncientSwordRage I tried, all I got was that Maylasian chef

Sheeple (plural of Sherson)
In a two sentences: The government is lying to us! Wake up, sheeple!

6:23 PM
Ah, so singular case. Neat

(triple dash for strikeout in chat)

@BaconyRevanant what axoren said

like this

Man, I wish there was a standard that Reddit, Discord, and SE all followed instead of each doing it differently.
Simple chat-level markup is a solved problem.

I'm of the opinion that they should all just use full unicode libraries and nothing else

6:24 PM
Also, Tab-completion vs. Enter-completion. I wish this was also standardized.

@Axoren we should make another standard for them all to follow

@BaconyRevanant Libraries written for unicode or in unicode?

@Axoren Yes
A Unicode library written in Unicode

As for whether or not people actually do write code in unicode: codegolf.stackexchange.com/a/195276/12309
Code Golf exists.

6:55 PM
@AncientSwordRage yes I do.

7:35 PM
@KorvinStarmast how can I contact you?
Are you on discord?

7:46 PM
yes, I'll send you an email address if that 'use it once' app is still working
@NautArch arrgh, what was the name of that thing we used for email addresses, one use and it dies? Hmm.

@AncientSwordRage yes, I am on discord. Are you on here now?
@Mithical thx
@AncientSwordRage when you and I are both on I can get that email to you and then kill the message.

8:02 PM
@KorvinStarmast I'm on now
And I'm on discord
If you have Besw or Rubik's they can pass a message on
To be honest I'd prefer discord

OK, how do I find you on discord. I think I have it working better on my phone now'
That dies in 5 minutes. Got it?

Ok, look forward to hearing from you. Do a quick "radio check" email and I'll see if ti gets through

Ahhh, I already sent all my details
My passwords, SSN, my shoe size

@AncientSwordRage Nice article, so far about half way through, and you reminded me of somehting as I got about half way down ... Mission Analysis. It's the first thing one does when given a new mission. So when the boss asks, at the water cooler, 'how long does it take' the answer is "in need to do a mission analysis" or "a task analysis" and then you have comitted to doing just that. But you haven't written a deadline yet
@AncientSwordRage Nice article. (And I recognize a few traps I have fallen into in the past!)

8:26 PM
Thanks!
@KorvinStarmast I'm used to that happening during our sprint planning, if it happens at all. Covid has not been kind to us

wait a second, why are we talking about sprint planning?

@goodguy5 I sent Korvin an article about estimation

ah okay

8:50 PM
@ThomasMarkov Is it marked that? (sorry to everyone who doesn't have context on that)

High priority curation task, I know :P
@Someone_Evil I just read the post more carefully, the flag is probably okay actually.
Decline my flag and I will take my lashes

meh, taught me that it may still obfuscate the post to others even if I get no indication of it.

That is strange.
In a strange way, it really isn't that bad of an answer. It could use some more support, but the sentiment is decent. And the crude idiom could be salvaged.

I mean, usually those posts are deleted by the red flags, which does an additional lock (which we can see) in addition to the obfuscation. But I guess a validated RA flag can do some of the same

A: What are the “spam” and “rude or abusive” (offensive) flags, and how do they work?

@Someone_Evil Are you actually able to "unspam" a post?

> Red flags can be cleared by moderators, whether active or already dismissed. This will cause the flags to be marked as disputed, even though they may have been marked helpful in the past. Since these flags carry heavy weight on the post and its author, a special mechanism is provided to clear borderline flags without penalizing anyone (declining the flag would penalize the flagger).

Frozen ravioli bag: ready in 5 minutes!
Also frozen ravioli bag: boil 3 quarts of water.

That's just a matter of wattage

Electric kettle, I choose you!
(I put a small amount of water into the pan on heat, and boil the rest in the kettle, then add the kettle water to the pan.)

Btw 3 quarts is about 3 liters for you folks with sensible measurements
There’s something else very wrong about this ravioli bag.

@ThomasMarkov Is it filled with tortellini?

According to the label there’s 1.2 kg of potassium in this bag.

10:15 PM
kg?
and how much does the bag weigh?

@NautArch That would be something right.

The bag weighs .7 kg.
But insists that there is 255 grams of potassium per serving.

Someone has forgotten their milli I suspect

@Someone_Evil vanilli?

@NautArch how much is a vanilligram?

10:18 PM
@BESW i do this!

@Someone_Evil Depends, if he sings your message it's extra.

the small amount of water in the pan is so that i can heat up the pan and not pour my boiling water into a cold pan to then re-heat all over again

@doppelgreener Exactly! (also heating an empty pan is not great for the pan)

(heating up the pan with no water in it means two hundred degree very hot metal no good very bad day, even hot water will explosively vaporise if i pour it into there)

Spoken like someone with experience.

10:21 PM
i have, at times, run out of water in the pan and gone "yes no problem i will keep it on the gas anyway and not put more water in here. gee this kettle is taking a while."

@Someone_Evil It depends on if they're actually measuring or if it's someone else.

those times were ... two.
