If the dollar sign has special significance, I'd expect \$ to mean a dollar sign per se

@kviiri our use in mathjax? Yeah I agree
@goodguy5 they seem equivalent, but yours is 1ms faster (at ~0ms) than mine

user435118
@AncientSwordRage Which regex do you recommend?

@Daniil ([\\\$]?\$\$?).*\1

12:22 AM
I'm also not sure what the second \$ does
This seems to work just as well:
([\\\$]?\$).*\1

I do.

I can't figure out what the \$? does.

you're already checking against 1-2 dollar signs.

@goodguy5 so in my one, you only need two

Q: Is letting a player use a Large or larger race a bad idea from the game balance point of view?

Baskakov_DmitriyPathfinder ruleset assumes players to be Medium or Small humanoids. Not so many rules exist for non-standard characters. regarding a different (D&D) game: Anyone know of any art out there of a githzerai wearing scale mail or something similar?
I'm playing a githzerai Battle Smith artificer.
I decided to go with the steel predator art (from MTOF) for my steel defender's token image, but haven't yet been able to find a suitable token image for my character... 99% of the githzerai art I've been able to find seems to be wearing no armor (like, shirtless or in a very flimsy robe).

As a DM, I have no issues with this; she gets the game and has been reading the rules, an...

Funnily enough, I had a similar concept in a recent playtest game. Githzerai artificer (armorer). Searched for a few hours for decent art, eventually gave up and went with something that looked like magi-tech battle armor.

CascabelIn terms of systems, I'm thinking of something that can get everyone into the game without a ton of setup or consultations of a player's handbook, but still enough going on (e.g. a few stats and some dice-rolling) that it's not purely an open-ended storytelling game. @BESW Do you think it might somehow be a bad idea?

Not dramatically, no. But I'm not gonna invite 'em unless/until I have some time to devote to talking with them and right now I don't.

I'm reading the Invisible Library novels, because they're deeply unchallenging and that's what I need right now, something to do while my brain just wibbles in the background. But I'm almost at the end of the third book and my brain just woke up to shout "That's not order vs chaos, it's facts vs feelings" and now it's way past my bedtime and I have a lot of uncomfortable thoughts about how order vs chaos is an epistemological nightmare.

@BESW Chaos vs Cosmos
it's also our human understanding of order/chaos vs reality

I'm not sure order/chaos is a human universal, is the thing.

@AncientSwordRage Oh cool, someone remembers that duo.

In the multiverse of the invisible library, worlds are categorized according to how chaos-dominant or order-dominant they are. But those words aren't accurate to the depiction, and I think that's deliberate. Chaos worlds aren't disordered; they're places that are ordered by stories.

@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica Duo?
I was thinking more along the lines of this:

Q: Did Lovecraft ever describe his fiction as 'cosmic horror'?

AncientSwordRageH.P Lovecraft wrote extensively about what we now call 'cosmic horror', a mix of elder beings, forgotten gods, and alien beings. All these beings have one thing in common : their chaotic nature. It seems curious do me that a writer like Lovecraft would refer to these 'chaotic' beings as 'cos...

2:48 PM
@AncientSwordRage Chaos and cosmos.
Chaos (Ancient Greek: χάος, romanized: kháos) refers to the void state preceding the creation of the universe or cosmos in the Greek creation myths, or to the initial "gap" created by the original separation of heaven and earth. == Etymology == Greek χάος means "emptiness, vast void, chasm, abyss", from the verb χαίνω, "gape, be wide open, etc.", from Proto-Indo-European *ǵheh2n-, cognate to Old English geanian, "to gape", whence English yawn.It may also mean space, the expanse of air, the nether abyss or infinite darkness. Pherecydes of Syros (fl. 6th century BC) interprets chaos as water, like...

@GcL hah, I can well imagine
@HotRPGQuestions this smells like an example of a policy that only makes busy work for people, and requires a level insider knowledge
"looks like your asking for designer intent!” "uh, no... Lore is fine." "Best edit that in then!"

GcL
It think that question got updated to ask about the lore specifically

If we didn't have the policy, maybe no one would assume they wanted designer intent

@AncientSwordRage That policy is there to stop answers which assume their own guess is as good as designer intent and thus a sufficient answer for "Why X?"

GcL
Designer intent used to be okay. I have an archive to Gygax interviews and writing that I dug up and cleaned up for some AD&D/2e questions

I don't recall there ever being a post notice specifically for that. I recall them being declared as off-topic and closed for that reason.

If we did, we sure didn't have a specific notice (we at least haven't got one anymore and we still have the game rec one)

Q: How do we save designer reasoning questions?

mxyzplk - SE stop being evilI think we have a bit of a problem with designer reason questions on the site. Q: What is the maximum number of known spells (that can be cast with spell slots and use Charisma) a character can have?

NathanSI often find it frustrating how few spells sorcerers have. This has led me to trying to increase the number of spells they have with a few multiclassing dips. I was then inspired to ask this question: What is the maximum number of spells known a character can have? I want this to be achieved prim...

@AncientSwordRage I don't think we used post notices, but if game rec has anything to show us, it's they don't help a huge amount.

I'm just impressed by this one.
@AncientSwordRage Go! Go, Cunningham's Law Elemental, go!

@AncientSwordRage do it. (and then will you please link it?)

I've got to do it first, but yes

10:07 PM
@doppelgreener Yes, exactly.
@AncientSwordRage Worlds in the Invisible Library setting that are more "chaos" aligned, follow narrative logic. People are more successful if they adhere to a particular character trope, the kinds of dramatic coincidences which make stories happen are more common, that sort of thing. In an extremely "chaotic" world, people effectively lose free will and just become walking cut-out characters.
"Order" aligned worlds resist narrative. Dramatic coincidences don't happen, everything is clockwork-predictable, and extremely ordered worlds are so intensely anti-story that people can't survive there for long.
It's an interesting spectrum.
