I like this RedOrca user. I like the way they think.

12:19 AM
I wonder how my work computer isn't on fire yet... it has 4 gigs of RAM total, running Windows 10 and I have 110 chrome tabs open (spread between two windows)

GcL
@Himitsu_no_Yami Paging. Lots of paging.
@Himitsu_no_Yami Laptop or desktop?

desktop
It seems to be handling things pretty well given the circumstances

GcL
Interesting. Less paging than expected. Compressed memory. So more CPU load? neat.

I really need to migrate from tabs to Pocket.

GcL
I know some colleagues that declare "tab bankruptcy" from time to time instead of saving them or using pocket.

12:31 AM
One of my coworkers (who is working from home) just said he could hear my RAM screaming lmao
Tomorrow I'm gonna find out what happens when I load Roll20 into active memory
but for now, my shift is over so I'm going home

GcL
Safe travels.

@BESW Oh dang

@BESW can I ask a total noob question? When using my (new, today) Wacom input tablet, I should look at the screen, not the tablet, right? Any tips for getting good at locating myself after a lift-and-reposition, or is it just time?

So, if your new shiny tablet is anything like my old one, you can ghost the pen above the surface of the tablet without touching it, and the cursor will follow as if you're moving the mouse; touching the tablet is like clicking.

It seems a little like that.
Except it's matte black, not shiny =)

So: ghost the pen to find your place, then touch to make the mark.
Does that work?

2:04 AM
coolio--sounds like it's getting the habit into the hand of hesitating just a sec between end-of-line-lift and just slapping it back down where the next line should start.
(Talking about writing/drawing like on a whiteboard in class.)

I assume you don't look at the mouse when you're using one; you look at the cursor on the screen. The input tablet pen is similar.
@nitsua60 Hmm not sure what you're saying here, re: tablet.

@BESW correct--I just need to be patient and willing to make mistakes. (Sounds a lot like life?)

Yeah. Heh.
If I seem to be misunderstanding the challenge you're facing, let me know.

@BESW Like, if I'm writing a few lines of cursive using the tablet, when I get to the end of a line, lift my hand, slap it back down to start a new line, and it's not neatly lined up, or even below enough...
Just need to practice more, and maybe be more visually aware of the cursor's position in that split-second when I'm close enough to pick up but not touching.

That sounds about right, yeah.
Also, undo is your friend, bind it to one of your tablet buttons and learn to love it.
Like, the three actions everybody binds to their tablet buttons are Undo, Redo, and swapping between draw and erase tools.
After that, maybe controlling the brush's embiggening, or a color grab button.

2:13 AM
@BESW ooh! Good tip!

Your standard setup is to have the tablet so that its buttons are on your non-drawing-hand side, with that non-dominant hand poised to smash 'em without interrupting your pen hand's journey.

I think I'll probably be set up differently, since my use-case is pretty different. I'm currently playing with it on my left (dominant) with the buttons above. That leaves my right hand free for mousing, since I'm writing and managing Zoom panels and swapping to other documents to grab snips and drop them onto the whiteboard app.... And sometimes text-chatting with the whole group, so I've got to keep the keyboard front and center.
Basically, hyperactive switching among four input devices while trying to keep track of a dozen teenagers. Pretty standard, really.

Ah, fair enough.

But Michael Prescott makes some nice "digital drawing for RPG art/maps" videos that have inspired me to try my hand... I'll have to keep those tips in mind for when the time comes =)

About to stream our D&D 5e actual-play podcast, Planeslip: Echoes of Creation, momentarily: https://www.twitch.tv/bigdredwun

In a universe adjacent to our own lies a world known as Runia. This world, once peaceful and idyllic, is now threatened by a monstrous being from its prehistory. A group of adventurers known as Whiskey Company have risen up to do what they can to fight this entity known only as Nagat. They have trekked far across the mortal realms in search of the shards of Barrinoth, the Titan of Justice, in hopes of returning him to his full power - and now they finally have all 6.

I'm trying a magic trick where I kickstart the fermentation of the next batch of ginger beer with leftovers from the last. Wish me luck x)

7:18 AM
you can do that?
XD

I can try at least
But as long as the culture is alive it ought to work. And judging by the fizz, it is alive

That's how you do it with yeast, so I don't see why it wouldn't work with ginger beer?

7:40 AM
@BESW Yuh. Plus mine has yeast in it (I know some people start ginger speciric cultures, but I've had good experiences with yeast and it's easier for someone like me whose energy for this kind of craft comes and goes)
I would guess having been accustomed to ginger, my culture has experienced a bit of microevolution already, making it even better suited this time around :>

8:21 AM
@KorvinStarmast What model are we talking about?
@GcL It's a legit unofficial source that reprints the Pathfinder SRD. I think the official source/partner for SRD content is Archives of Nethys?

Neat
Why hasn't humanity just,... Flooded the earth with ginger beer?

2:11 PM
@NautArch Are they completionists?

@GcL Not sure, we're not really dungeon crawlers. I just did a recap and mentioned there's another unchecked door in this section and two more passage ways back at the initial split.

2:46 PM
@NautArch Jello-O pudding is an instant pudding brand that is sold by the same people who make Jello (flavored gelatin) ... and it used to be advertised to death by Bill Cosby in the 70's and 80's.

@BESW Wacom day 1 success! Thanks for the bit of handholding/encouragement yesterday.

@KorvinStarmast Yah. My guess is the brand, which started with gelatin products, expanded.
@nitsua60 you're supposed to hold the pen, not a hand.
that may help

@NautArch yes it did, I saw it happening during my childhood. My mom used to make pudding for us but she never bought Jell-O brand pudding.
It was too expensive and she did not care for their flavors

@KorvinStarmast I also recently learned that gelatin is made from a variety of animal hoof types. THere is a vegan version, tho.
but either way, Elf pudding is clearly pudding made from elves. Probably more akin to blood pudding.
than dessert pudding.

@NautArch Yes, so is glue. :) And then there is a kind of meat called "head cheese" that has a lot of gelatin in it ...
@NautArch I think that Elf Pudding is clearly an off brand from Keebler made by their elves, and it was stolen from a shipment headed to "Wall Of Stone Mart" somewhere near the sunless citadel

2:49 PM
@KorvinStarmast Yeah, I had actually never tried head cheese before until I was recently in New Orleans. A restaurant there had a slice fried and put on toasted bread with something else. I tried it. It was delicious.
@KorvinStarmast hahahaha! ALthough I think it's made FROM not BY keebler elves ;P

@NautArch muahahaha perhaps so.
@NautArch Better when sliced and fried than when served like bologna on a bologna sandwich. Yeah. So is blogna in my experience.
(But that's a matter of taste, my brother still likes his baloney sandwiches ....)

GcL
3:10 PM
@NautArch I have stopped believing brits when they describe something as a "pudding". The variety of foods that they label with the term have made it essentially meaningless to me. Most of the foods labeled as "pudding" do not match the north american concept of pudding.

@GcL I think pudding is often used simply for any dessert (or dessert in general)

GcL
@Someone_Evil blood pudding is not a dessert.

@GcL I said often, not always

GcL
Pudding as a synonym for dessert is a north american thing. Macaroni pudding... it's macaroni and cheese.

@Someone_Evil My understanding was that it was any soft-ish starchy mass of stuff. Like, mashed potatoes are probably pudding.
(not a Brit, should probably not be believed)
surely there's a SE site where one could ask this

3:15 PM
@GcL but it is yummy

GcL
I don't think I've ever heard of mashed potatoes described as pudding... but I haven't ever looked for it.

@GcL Henceforth we shall call Mashed Potatoes Potato Pudding.

GcL
@Someone_Evil I'm not sure what the proportion of dessert puddings are to the savory (and unsavory) variety. There are sufficient non-dessert puddings that when a pudding is on the offer... you can't expect it to be dessert.
@NautArch The original MP3?

3:40 PM
Puddings are a type of ooze, usually with various immunities and low AC

@GcL If you can eat it with a spoon, or a spork, or even a fork, go ahead and label it pudding.
As long as it's lumpy.
Or smooth.

GcL
Precisely demonstrates the issue with the precision of the term.
Oh, and yorkshire pudding is basically a pancake muffin... so no fork required.

Well, yeah, but... Yorkshire.

4:38 PM
@BESW got undo and redo mapped, which was a great call. I'm not having luck so far mapping a button to swap pen<-->eraser, but that seems to be completely because MS Whiteboard has no shortcuts built in, no tooltips, and no documentation =/

5:09 PM
Has anyone played the video game Jurassic World Evolution?

@nitsua60 And popovers are Yorkshire Pudding batter poured into a cup cake pan and baked like a cup cake, yet served with roast beef. I loved them as a kid.

GcL
@KorvinStarmast have you ever had a dutch baby pancake? similar to a popover but bigger and usually served with fruit for breakfast.

5:56 PM
@GcL sounds vaguely familiar but it's been over two decades since I was in the Netherlands

Can we get some more VTCs on this question?

6:20 PM
@NautArch Ye. I was well aware of this, having been raised vegetarian.

1 hour later…
7:37 PM
@V2Blast is the warforged tag right for the changeling question? It's not really about warforged. Not a big deal either way.

8:28 PM
@NautArch Expertise with warforged could be a factor in crafting a good answer.

@Powerdork I'm not sure why? Expertise in warforge isn't required, expertise in changeling is.

@NautArch Warforged are defined by certain functions and behaviours (notably, innate armour plating and a lack of sleep), which is an important matter for a shapeshifter to consider.

I don't think it's worth debating, but I don't think it's necessary. I'd removed it and v2 added it back
Not worth an edit war

If warforged didn't have confounding factors, there wouldn't be a question.

GcL
@Powerdork They got rid of a lot of those in the 5th edition conversion. Also, no more warforged specific spells. C'est la vie.

8:37 PM
I quit. Nobody is willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt.

GcL
I'm trying to recall if it ever came up in the novels. Shifters and dragonmarked were explored pretty extensive, but I don't think changelings were addressed very much.

@Powerdork every race is defined by it's traits. I don't see any difference with warforged. @GcL put up an answer going into more detail, but it's a question about changelings ability.

GcL
I think it's definitely about warforged as well. I could anticipate similar questions regarding shifters as well. I'd tag the question with both changeling and specific race if it's one of the non-standard ones.
By 3.5 rules, the warforged weren't valid targets for a lot of things, including changelings impersonations as they were "living constructs"
The 5e conversion simplified and wiped a bunch of the distinction as it was kind of a pain in the butt to deal with. Like requiring separate healing spells for warforged vs everyone else.
Also, there were some really nasty anti-construct spells that did a number on warforged.
I don't miss the rules complexity at all. It was a bear to keep track of and play with.

Ah, so it's kind of a edition issue

GcL
8:55 PM
Yeah. Lots of 3.5 and 4e baggage... especially since those source books are called out as useable for setting information in the 5e content.
One of the welcome changes is, you can't target warforged with heat metal.

I like this answer making an argument that "spell slot" and "slot level" are the same thing.
Don't the wizard subclasses have features that trigger when they cast a spell using a spell slot of X level?

Not all of them. Abjuration does for one, but I don't think Divination has one
Scratch that, found the divination one

@GcL Since you bring it up, the argument isn't that "spell slot" and "slot level" are the same thing; it's that a slot level is the level of a spell slot.

They don't get at consistent levels, do there's no pattern, just a features using the same trigger that isn't unique to wizard subclasses

GcL
@MarkWells That I concur with. It is the level of a spell slot that was used to cast the spell the first time. The second time it's cast, out of the ring, there is not spell slot used. It similarly retains the other characteristcs from casting time such as spell DC.

@GcL OK, now look at any spell that has slot-level-dependent effects. It will say something like "When this spell is cast using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher..." If the spell is cast without using a spell slot, then it's not cast using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher.

GcL
9:23 PM
@MarkWells The spell was cast using a spell slot the first time, and the level of that slot was explicitly retained so the effects would be the same power as they were going in. You can definitely have spells cast at higher power that don't use spell slots. Lemme go find some examples from the DMG.
Robe of Stars on pg 194 casts magic missile at level 5
If that uses a spell slot, you could cast it from the robe into the ring.

Normally only a creature can cast a spell into the ring. Does the Robe of Stars cast the spell, or does it let you cast it?

GcL
I think it's another deficiency of not having a formal ontology of terms defined... which would be tedious, but probably eliminate these fun edge cases.

(I'd argue that "cast magic missile as a 5th level spell" is nonfunctional as written, same as the Tiefling's racial hellish rebuke, and the only way it makes sense is to interpret that as "as if a 5th level spell slot were used".)
(because it's not a 5th-level spell)

GcL
"you can use an action to pull off one of the stars and use it to cast magic missile as a 5th-level spell." The robe wearer is casting the spell as a 5th level spell.

@GcL Meaning what, that it's harder to counterspell? Magic missile's effects don't depend on its level, only on the level of spell slot spent to cast it.

GcL
9:32 PM
@MarkWells You get more missiles.

@GcL "When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the spell creates one more dart for each slot level above 1st."

GcL
5th level magic missile gets 4 extra darts.
Necklace of Prayer Beads supports that kind of nomenclature as well: "Cure wounds (2nd level)"

So, the way those items can work as you describe (because I agree that's almost surely the intent of Robe of Stars) is that the magic missile is treated as if it was cast using a 5th-level spell slot.

GcL
Necklace of fireball also refers to fireball at higher levels: "When you do so, increase the level of the fireball by 1 for each bead beyond the first."

But it's kind of absurd to treat it as if it was cast using a 5th-level spell slot for some purposes, but as no spell slot for other purposes.

GcL
9:36 PM
I think it's a semantic inconsistency that's generally not an issue as nobody's slicing hairs so thinly.

Q: Can goblin food of poor quality cause some sort of damage?

OrlyynTo start as a new DM, I choose the first adventure of "Tales from the Yawning Portal", "The Sunless Citadel". During the adventure, the players ran into a store room (Goblin Pantry) filled with food & water of "poor quality", as well as "Elf Pudding" made previously by goblins. I was wondering i...

Particularly when the argument for Ring of Spell Storing requiring a spell slot is that it specifies its capacity in terms of slot level, not that it actually says "the spell must be cast using a spell slot".

GcL
@MarkWells I think it's describing the magnitude of the effect. Spells slots are a limited resource that characters have.
@MarkWells I think that got errata'd in
maybe not. I can't find it in SA

@GcL The D&D Beyond version of the item doesn't say so, and I assume it would be current on errata.
Anyway there's clearly a semantic inconsistency somewhere.

GcL
The text I have is "The level of the slot used to cast the spell determines how much space it uses." This was taken to mean if it doesn't burn a spell slot, it can't go in.
Which is why it can't store infinite cantrips.

9:46 PM
@GcL I think I understand your position, and I don't think I have anything else specific to say, so I'm going to disengage at this point.

10:23 PM
@MarkWells As far as I can tell, the sentence "You can increase the spell slot level by one for each additional charge you expend." in the wand of fireballs description is indeed the latest version, at least as of the November 2018 printing of the DMG.
It hasn't changed since the 1st printing either
oh wait, that was in response to the Ring of Spell Storing
the Ring has never been errataed either
@GcL the "The spell uses the slot level, [...] of the original caster" sentence has been there from the 1st printing all the way through the 2018 printing of the DMG as well. as has the "The level of the slot used to cast the spell determines how much space it uses." sentence

@nitsua60 I'm glad I could be helpful! Wacom's stuff can be kinda intimidatingly feature-dense, and they're designed for use with programs that have more comprehensive keybinding so MS Whiteboard must be extra tough to use with one.

10:50 PM
@BESW Yeah--from a cursory reading I'm just not going to worry about it too much. Having Undo/Redo mapped is awesome, and "dipping in the well" to grab the eraser is a little annoying, but not too bad.
I hold out hope that I'll somehow figure it out, as my laptop's stylus nicely plays with Whiteboard: if you click the button while "drawing" it auto-switches to eraser. So I figure if I can dig into the Wacom stylus's buttons, I may be able to recreate that.

Keep your eye open for any other actions you use regularly and check if they can be keybound instead.

Cycling through the pens, changing stroke-weight, swapping to eraser, lasso selecting... those are the everyday ones.

(Also, Wacom's button bindings can be customized per program! So you can have it behave differently depending on what app you're interacting with. It's magical.)

But honestly, I've been using on-screen presentation stuff that's not great for long enough that dipping into an application's menu to reset pen characteristics while talking is a natural part of my workflow.
@BESW I saw that. I can't wait to try it out with inkscape and some tutorials this summer!

Speaking of magic, and I guess Nits, your story of axework made me go all lyrical
