Morning all

Time zones sure do exist

Ben
It's a figment of your imagination. I am actually using a device to post from the future in your own time.
So I can inform people of imminent apocalyptic events, and give adequate warning to the rest of the world
So far, nothing on the horizon.

Lol

Yeah that certainly made me laugh, thank you

I too am in the future
XD

Q: Accidentally let party wander into a high level situation, how do I help them get out without cheesing?

R. D.TL;DR - due to poor planning on my part in my sandbox-esque game, a party of four Level 5s (fighter, warlock, non-healer bard, wizard) is about to wander into a high level situation and I'd like them to not die while still letting them accomplish something. Here's the situation. The party rece...

Q: Do you keep Ability Score Increases from Manuals when Shapechanged?

Gael LShapechange is a 9th level spell that lets you assume the form of a different creature, replacing your game statistics, including your Strength, Dexterity and Constitution scores, by that of your new form (but keeping your initial Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores, as well as any benefits ...

Ben
@trogdor We do have a few in this group, in case some of us are unable to post about future events. Trogdor, BESW, Miniman, linksassin and myself are the main ones, I believe

Is there any purpose for specifying the spellcasting ability of racial spells that don't even have a save or an attack?

@Himitsu_no_Yami I suppose it's in case of any mechanics that involve the spellcasting ability modifier of an existing spell

@MikeQ Can you think of any mechanics that do that?

Ben
@Himitsu_no_Yami I think some of them have an effect that do rely on the modifier. E.g. you might not have to make an attack or force a save, but you still deal damage, or the spell lasts for an amount of time based on the modifier

1:35 AM
@Himitsu_no_Yami I think we may have a question on this....

Ben
Hellish rebuke?

@Ben lol XD

What prompted me to ask about it was Water Genasi having Shape Water and Create or Destroy Water and specifying CON as spellcasting ability

Ben
@Himitsu_no_Yami Water djinn/golems?
Normally this spell would not need to have any kind of check or damage, etc... but I don;t see how it couldn't be used on creatures made of water?

@Himitsu_no_Yami There is an Entry in the database! It must not be NULL! Define the Ability! :D

Ben
1:49 AM
Opposed checks too. If two people are using shape water in the same area, you'd have to fight for control
@BlackSpike Error at line 3: value cannot be null

@Himitsu_no_Yami One reason is the Arcane Trickster Rogue's Spell Thief feature: "Immediately after a creature casts a spell that targets you or includes you in its area of effect, you can use your reaction to force the creature to make a saving throw with its spellcasting ability modifier. The DC equals your spell save DC."

oh good to know

Can Racial Spell-Like Abilities be counter-spelled? Does that need an Ability?

Ben
@BlackSpike Counterspell can be used on any spell, but only requires an opposed check on 3rd level spells or higher, I believe?

example of spell-like ability that isn't just a spell?

1:56 AM
Monk's using ki sometimes IIRC
Also the Stone Golem's Slow feature probably?

@Himitsu_no_Yami tbh, I don't know the Rules, so my words might be inaccurate. Is is a Spell? Just thinking out loud :)

jgn
SLAs don't exist so you probably need to determine if its a spell or not a spell by looking at the "SLA" in question

Ben
Yeah I think there's a definite line between what is and isn't a spell. If it's in the spell list, it's a spell that you can use "Counterspell" on, if it isn't in that list, "Counterspell" has no effect

most of them say "you cast X spell without X component"

Ben
@Himitsu_no_Yami I'd say that's the only difference.
It's a racial trait, so it's a SLA

1:58 AM
@Himitsu_no_Yami If something says "you cast X" it's a spell

I know

jgn
@Medix2 Ki is never a spell but you can use ki to cast spells shrug

I don't really think "spell-like ability" is used in 5e, maybe somewhere?
Though there are ways to make spell attacks without casting spells, so that's pretty close

jgn
"spell like" is used (eg "a spell like fireball"), but not "spell-like", that isn't something that exist anymore

I don't know if it helps the conversation but there's my answer here:
38
A: What counts as a spell?

RubiksmooseA spell is called a spell and listed in a spell list Something that is a spell will be listed in such a way that indicates it is a spell. Or, as Jeremy Crawford says here: Want to know what spells look like? See "Spells" (PH, 211–89). Nothing else is a spell unless it is presented as a spel...

jgn

But yeah, 5e doesn't have anything that I know of that explicitly is defined as an SLA

12
A: Can you Counterspell a spell-like ability?

Miniman5e has no concept of "spell-like abilities". If a monster has the ability to cast a spell, it will specify that. Any ability that doesn't specify that it's a spell isn't a spell. Or, to address your specific example: No, you cannot use Counterspell against any of a Beholder's abilities.

Ben
@jgn also did a search in the PHB for "Spell-like; spell like; spellike" and the sentience you had was the only match "For a spell like x"

jgn
5e is a lot easier to understand if you forget previous versions

Ben
My dyslexia is really flaring up today. Lol

2:06 AM
@Himitsu_no_Yami I think this is the question I was thinking of earlier.

jgn
That could probably do with an update.

@BlackSpike I've dropped a note to someone who has experience making armor. In a few days when they've gotten back to me and I stumble in here wondering who was looking for armor tips, remind me it was you? kthx =)

@nitsua60 We should put safety tape up or something so people stop stumbling around here ;-)

@nitsua60 Thanks! :)

@jgn I think it was actually always incorrect. Arcane Trickster is in the PHB
Actually, who knows, maybe it's still correct... Just realized the Trickster one doesn't do anything to misty step

2:12 AM
Sorry if I confused things. 5e has Races that grant Spells? SLA's are not a thing? ok.
So: Does a Race Spell need a Spell Casting Ability? Yes.
1) To fill the database slot.
2) future-proofing

And possible for the Arcane Trickster Rogue's Spell Thief ability
"Immediately after a creature casts a spell that targets you or includes you in its area of effect, you can use your reaction to force the creature to make a saving throw with its spellcasting ability modifier. The DC equals your spell save DC."

jgn
@Medix2 True for misty step, but in general something to be aware of.

@Medix2 3) Possible interaction with other effects

Ben
@BlackSpike I think that counts as future-proofing

@Ben Not if it already exists as an effect
Or are you bringing in your "I already went to the future" again?

jgn
2:15 AM
I doubt it's for future proofing. There is a design document saying "all spells need a spell casting ability", which may enable future design to continue under that assertion rather than having a ton of exceptions.

Is that not future proofing?

@jgn that's kinda what I meant :)

jgn
@Medix2 I would say it's more for consistency. Not "we should do X because in the future Y", it's "we should do X because all other cases do X"
future proofing is one of the benefits of consistency, but it isn't the only one.

"We should do X this time (and all times) so that later, we can assume X" ?

jgn
Another is that there are less questions on the site in the same vein as "what do I do in Z obscure situation where the rules say X but this spell doesn't conform"

Ben
2:18 AM
The opposite could also be offered. "If we give all spells a casting ability, it covers all bases for any future iterations"

I guess we should just be glad they did it at all, even though we can't know why they did it

jgn
@BlackSpike Maybe thats what they are thinking, but "we should do X at all times so that [the system is easier to understand / we can manage player expectations / the rules are easier to write / ... etc]" consistency has a ton of benefits

So:
All Spells (even Race Spells) must have a Spellcastng Ability, even if it seems like they don't need one, just in case.
case 1: Spell Thief
case x: other.
@jgn yup. Sounds like good design :)

jgn
@BlackSpike I'd say just because that's how spells work, it just be that way

@jgn true. A spell is cast 'with an Ability' . That is how spells work. :)
@Himitsu_no_Yami have we helped?

@V2Blast It's the 2nd riddle from the lost knight and based on an older nursery rhyme. I think i'm just going to print out the nursery rhyme as part of the clues.

@NautArch Good idea

@doppelgreener Ages are 12/10/8/7, so I think that's reasonable. It still probably isn't that easy.
And who cares if it is too easy. THey're having fun :)

3:05 PM
@NautArch Fundraise for your kid's/kids' clubs by constructing riddles out of references from before their time and charge money for clues.

@Yuuki Microtransactions are so last year. Charge money for lootboxes which may or may not contain clues.

3:21 PM
@doppelgreener Each lootbox contains at least one red herring, and one partial clue

@Medix2 An actual red herring and when the kids ask why they're getting fish, say that you'll have to charge them for a possible clue.

3:39 PM
Does the City of Brass have any other names?

@NautArch I think I've seen NPCs call it "The Brass City"

@goodguy5 Any other variations? As background, in our previous campaign there was an efreeti mob-boss type there that we had several run-ins with and my new PC is kind of a bastard of his (post-several generations) on a world that's been cut-off from planar travel. Inheritor background, but wanted to do something thematic to him (previous DM never actually named the NPC who played a freaking large role in the campaign.)

@NautArch not that I'm aware of, but I'll check a few things.
As a fun, dumb activity:
you can put "city of brass" into this:
https://lingojam.com/D%26DIgnan

and you get back out "Tshh kitash shaf drrissss"

Which, if you run through again, you get "The cadue hupe bracccc".

I'm aware of a few real life examples that are names/nicknames based on bastardizations of translation

@goodguy5 DO NOT WAAAAAAAAAAAAAANT

why mad

3:51 PM
Perhaps a reference to the do not want meme

even so

It's from a movie where the entire thing is bastardization of translation, seems topical

oh really? I never knew that

Actually, it's from Revenge of the Sith. But a bootleg Cantonese/Chinese version.

Yeah from Backstroke of the West

3:53 PM
With English subtitles.
So basically feeding the original English into an English -> Chinese translator and then feeding the result into a Chinese -> English translator to get "English" subtitles.

perfect

My plan is to be a 'good' guy, but who was raised with a different take on our previous 'heroes'.

I believe it's Mandarin Chinese, or at the very least, many of the translational fudgery made sense to me as if it had been Mandarin
Though I probably should learn more about exactly how similar/different Mandarin and Cantonese are. You'd really think I'd have looked into that...

It's spoken differences mainly.
So if you're dealing with text only, there aren't really any differences.

Yeah it's a "dialect" (laughs in lack of mutual intelligibility)
Ah good to know, I knew there were some textual differences and it was mostly speech. Just wasn't sure how extensive the text differences really were

3:57 PM
As far as I know, as long as you're using the same script, there are no textual differences.

My brain just tried to figure out the adjective form of "brass" and unfortunately came up with "brassen"
It's mostly traditional vs simplified
Actually, I think that's entirely the difference in writing

Some time ago, the CCP government developed Simplified Chinese. Obviously, given politics, certain Cantonese-speaking areas or areas with high Cantonese-speaking population (Hong Kong, Taiwan) refuse to use Simplified script and instead retain Traditional script.
But these are 1-to-1 so there shouldn't be anything lost in translation.

Yup, and there's lots of other politics in there too. Movements and articles about why simplified is bad and "ruins meaning and characters" and then plenty of counterargument things as well
Yeah that makes sense. Though some of the traditional characters are vastly different enough to be unrecognizable

Personally, reducing stroke count by nearly half for some characters is an improvement, imo.

what's the detective game with gumshoe in the title?
bubble gumshoe?

4:00 PM
Some of us would rather not have carpal tunnel syndrome.
@goodguy5 Sounds about right.

@Yuuki The existing standards are meh and/or there are too many of them. Let's solve that by making a new one, preferably with iffy reverse compatibility! ^_^

Look man, if you want to write 學 instead of 学, be my guest.
I'll just be sitting over here with a normal wrist.

Some simplified characters ended up having more strokes, which I do honestly find funny. It was like three characters, but still. Then there are those that went from 10 or so down to 3 or so
Yeah I'm good sticking to simplified xué

4:14 PM
@goodguy5 Well, there's Gumshoe. Which is old. And there's Bubblegumshoe, which you'll hear @BESW mention occasionally and is aimed to recreate the feel of teen-sleuthing writing. (Nancy Drew, Veronica Mars, et al.)

I can't find any evidence that The City of Brass has any nicknames.

But it'd be well within reason for mistranslations through the other primordial languages.

and you could take inspiration from Arabic (with the City of Brass being a reference to 1001 nights) and use something there

@goodguy5 Yeah, arabic is where i was heading. Nahas is "brass" in arabic.

@goodguy5 Funkytown.

@Yuuki double funky town

Brass Mobster is: nahas alghugha'
i think that may be the name.

4:17 PM
Hmm... what other genre uses a lot of trumpet/trombone/horn/etc.?

@Yuuki music? :D

@NautArch don't forget that ignan is clicky and hissy

As a linguist, seeing a language described as clicky and hissy honestly made me laugh
Oh, not saying it's a bad thing. Just genuinely found that funny especially since it's not exactly far from a linguistic description

Given how clicks seem to be common in some areas and absent entirely in others, I can't say such a distinction is unusual to mention.

@goodguy5 Or maybe i'll just be Puster Boindexter.

4:29 PM
@NautArch XD

@vicky_molokh Clicks being an areal feature is one of the great debates of linguistics
There's a lot of theories as to their origin and the like, often requiring some very physically distant languages to be related

5:00 PM
@KorvinStarmast Very nice of you to answer for someone :P

@NautArch what was funny is that they cut and pasted a comment that looked like an answer, so I just gave them support. :) Yeah, I know, not a best practice.

@KorvinStarmast I guess it's better than watching the downvotes come in.

@NautArch It has turned into quite the furball, with all of the edits to both questions and answers.
@NautArch shadow assassin; is that in one of the supplements? Not ringing a bell.

@KorvinStarmast It's from Dungeon of the Mad Mage

@Someone_Evil Ah, our group has not yet played that. Here's a homebrew that looks a little OP, but intriguing.

5:17 PM
@KorvinStarmast shadow assassin?

@Medix2 Even if not directly geographically caused, with/without clicks is still a pretty distinct dividing line, thus it's expected that clickiness would be one of the first descriptors to add when talking about how a language sounds.

@NautArch yeah, eternal lord also told me that its in dungeon of the mad mage pub adventure.
@Medix2 would this be like some of the features of the Bushman's language in sub Saharan Africa? I recall reading about that in the papers when the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy" first came out.

@KorvinStarmast Probably? I believe Bushman languages and Khoisan languages are the same
But there's a reasonable amount of debate on how to tree and family and group Khoisan languages. Or whether it's even a meaningful grouping; it's changed quite a lot over time

@Medix2 I've added a comment on my question answering all of your questions

@Himitsu_no_Yami Do please edit them into the question

5:33 PM
@KorvinStarmast I'm confused...not sure what's being referenced here...
@Himitsu_no_Yami I'm honestly not sure this is going to be answerable without significantly narrowing it down beyond what you're looking for.
At a minimum, i think a level requirements, whether you are talking about 'hardest to hit' or best save against X. Or if it's something else.
Or if there is a dupe in the list of questions @Medix2 linked.

@NautArch Shadow Assasin is a monster from the Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage published adventure, which was one of the examples in the true polymorph question posted. Querent edited it out themselves, presumably because they realized it is an undead and not a relevant example (as far as I can see)

@Someone_Evil oh, okay! I totally missed that.

@Someone_Evil should it be edited out again?

@KorvinStarmast I'd say yes
The normal assassin creature might make more sense as an example

@Himitsu_no_Yami I'm a bit unsure, is the character now required to have 100 HP? What if they had 101 HP, any damage will make them vulnerable to PWK

5:46 PM
You have a point but I didn't know how else to factor PWK in without saying to assume PWK won't be an issue
I'm 100% open to suggestions though

You can just say: ignore the spell

@Someone_Evil Are we also ignoring disintegrate? Or other spells?

Didn't disintegrate get an errata so it only does the thing if you end with 0 HP?

> The target is disintegrated if this damage leaves it with 0 hit points.

Also this might be relevant, or a reason shapechange is simply the best option always: "Are Trolls immune to all instant death effects?"

5:50 PM
@Someone_Evil that begs the question does that mean any ability that's like "If damage drops you to 0 HP but does not kill you instantly" affects that or not?

You could say to ignore effects which kill outright

@Himitsu_no_Yami I still think you need to more strictly define "hardest to kill"

Yeah it may be best to just ignore instant-kill and similar things since a lot of what they do is not well agreed upon

I think I'll say to ignore effects which kill without dropping to 0 HP first. And as far as defining hardest to kill I'm not sure which way would be best

You could specify a specific attack/save based effect/combination of the two as the threat, but it's getting a bit synthetic

5:53 PM
You could open several separate questions, but then you'd be getting very different answers...

@Medix2 Unless what @Himitsu_no_Yami really is looking for is one of your linked questions.
I mean, the various levers are highest AC, highest HP, best saves, best abilities to not drop to 0, etc.

And advantage on those saves

Ability to avoid or halve damage, which will depend on type and source

Question is just way too broad
BUt I think narrowing it down also makes it less useful, but that's up to @Himitsu_no_Yami

"Without running away, how long can it survive pummeling from a (the?) Tarrasque?"

5:59 PM
I thought there was some UA or subclass where you came back to life 1d10 days later or something, but perhaps not

@Medix2 if you find that let me know, I'd be very curious about it

@Medix2 this has a revenant subrace that does something like that

@Sdjz Yeah them, they basically just won't die

6:19 PM
how does one search for subreddits if you don't know the exact name/if it exists?

@goodguy5 google?

Any more information to go on?
There's also the gargantuan list of all subreddits

I'm just hoping it's not supergirl roleplay.

there's /r/wellthatsucks
and I'm wondering if there's a pseudo companion to the effect of wellthatsgreat

(/r/wellthatsgreat does not exist)

6:21 PM
you could just try typing /r/subredditguess and see if it's there.

@Medix2 that's the ticket. thanks
actually, this ended up being the thing:
http://redditlist.com/all
then you can search

@NautArch That question made me chuckle

:5323672 definitely!

How did that happen? ^ The :5323672, oh probably a backspace

weird

It looks like you deleted the last number?

@KorvinStarmast definitely!
yeah, that looks like it. deleted the final digit.
Not sure why TJL keeps editing out my sourcing, but i'll stop trying.

We talked about it at the stack meeting last month.

aw, man.

it was overlapping edits.

Oh I see now

was trying to add a link to the spell and page citation.

Oh my gosh how many edits can one question have XD

tfw you're at work typing up notes for a case for 10 minutes and while typing you accidentally refresh and lose all of it

@Medix2 answers are all guessing at intent of question. I voted to close.

@NautArch Same
@Himitsu_no_Yami Oh dang... Yeah I know that feeling, back to typing things in I guess, best of luck

7:25 PM
Today is one hell of a day. So far, I've gotten up to find a little bit of gravy from dinner last night found its way onto my glasses, my glasses didn't come clean when I tried to clean them at first, I spent 10 minutes typing case notes only to lose them all, and just now had a customer ask to speak to my supervisor

oof. oh no.

God speed

@Himitsu_no_Yami Was their name Karen?

nope, it was Patrick and he was super respectful about it

@Himitsu_no_Yami Unless of course if you ever asked if this is the Krusty Krab.

I wouldn't be too worried. Sometimes folks just want to try and get something more.

7:29 PM
Well this one was my fault
It's not even about getting more unless more is more information cus we're customer support for Pearson
on the plus side it reminded me of a funny meme
Which damage type is typically considered "stronger" Psychic or Fire?

5e presumably?

yeah
i keep forgetting there are other TTRPGS that aren't D&D 5e

@Someone_Evil technically, 5e still isn't as specific as it could be.

Fire is more often resisted, while immunity to psychic is relatively common (see constructs)

@Himitsu_no_Yami Psychic, imo, but s1e raises a good point

7:42 PM
hmm fair

lemme pull up a specific answer

@goodguy5 I don't think either of the "5e" systems have damage types

really? Shadowrun doesn't?
I thought it did, for some reason

@goodguy5 I've never seen by nickname shortened like that before

84
A: What are the most and least-resisted damage types?

AndrásUnsurprisingly Poison and Force, respectively Here is a nice summary of Monster Manual I shall transfer the relevant parts of the chart here in case of link rot: \begin{array} {|r|r|r|r|} \hline &Resistance &Immunity &Vulnerability \\ \hline Acid &18 &15 &0 \\ \hline Cold &46 &20 &4 \\ \hli...

7:44 PM
@Himitsu_no_Yami how are you defining "stronger"...

@goodguy5 I didn't think of shadowrun. Didn't realize it was possible to ask such a straight forward question about it

For the curious, I have a specific character concept in mind but it would require a tweak on the UA psionic rogue subclass. So instead of psychic daggers they'd be fire and do fire damage and I wanted to be aware of if it would be really over- or under- powered in comparison before I asked the DM about it

@goodguy5 Worth noting that this table has the problem of being skewed by creature variety. Dragons and Devils all have like 50 entries in the monster manual, and each of a given type tend to all have the same resistances/vulnerabilities.

@NautArch Presumably less likely to be resisted/negated/etc

@Xirema and many are fire/poison.
Not sure how you quantify resistance vs immunity.

7:45 PM
@NautArch regarding that "8 players" question, now I'm just hoping for another populist badge.... gotta get that question to hit hotness bot somehow

@goodguy5 hehe. Folks definitely like your answer. Even if the great and humble nautarch doesn't fully agree.
I agree with everything but the table size thing, though.

So what we really need is an aggregate of all encounters that show up in prebuilt campaigns (or in homebrew campaigns that DMs are willing to submit for analysis...), and how the resistances/vulnerabilities distribute across those encounters. Far more likely to give useful results.

@Xirema stop giving yourself more fake work
I think partially it depends on how everyone wants to handle problems, which your session zero hits on.

but I've run into big table woes across multiple years, players, and DMs.

combat is the biggest issue.

I'm honestly a bit worried about my wizard being a bit too fire-focused, but as he progresses I'm hoping i pick up some other spells and eventually cantrip(s) to help balance me.
but choosing fire genasi made me kinda want to stay fire-focused.
@goodguy5 Yeah, although even with 4 players, the slowdown is real.

@Xirema Would doing it on the random encounter tables in XGtE be valid/useful?
@NautArch Or go all in and pick Elemental Adept

@Someone_Evil I may do that, but from my optimization reading that seems...suboptimal.
especially since as a wizard i can have other options.

@goodguy5 When my workplace actually gives me some real work to break up the new year lull, I'll consider your suggestion. XD

BUt right now, my cantrips are necrotic (toll the dead) and fire (firebolt). Also have Shocking Grasp, but that's more of a way to GTFO when I need to.

@Someone_Evil Probably the DMG first, since I think that's more common for DMs to reliably use (if they're using anything at all).

GcL
@NautArch Chess clock fixed a lot of those problems for one of my tables. Basically, "Hey, how long do you all think combat should last?"

@GcL we're pretty combat-focused, so combat takes up much of our sessions and we're okay with it. definitely not okay with the time it takes some folks.
i mean, we've got one player who, after multiple years, is still asking "which die do I roll"?

7:52 PM
@Xirema Is there more than the example encounter table (Sylvan, p. 87) in the DMG?

GcL
@NautArch The recommendation I saw, but never tried, for individuals were those little minute hour glasses.
The fun of slapping the clock is enough to speed up play... and it's fun.
but the timers are all players vs dm.

@Someone_Evil There's a whole section on random encounters: dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/creating-adventures#RandomEncounters
Oh... I see what you mean. There is only one example table

GcL
@Xirema That's if the DM is selecting uniformly from the sample set provided... like in AL. Although, I think it would be a reasonable approximation ... if not a bit obnoxious to go through.

@GcL I think he means counting each preset encounter and an average of the random encounters. So if a room triggers 2 random encounters between 8 options, each random encounter gets a weight of 1/4 compared to the set encounter in the next room which has a weight of 1

@Someone_Evil Hmm, I always assumed the tables I was using came from the DMG, but I guess they're coming from XGE instead.

7:58 PM
Although that becomes a problem when most random encounter tables are tied to overland travel and in more open-world campaigns like CoS or OOtA you can't really figure the proportion of random encounters to set encounters easily

GcL
@DavidCoffron Yeah. Seems like a reasonable approximation. I personally pick a lot more stuff the players are resistant to or prepared for. E.g. picked up on the subtle neon sign that said "fire monsters live in the volcano" and bought fire resistance... fine... going to pick lots of fire damage monsters so the players get some mileage out of their good planning.

@DavidCoffron Those campaign modules do usually have their own rules for creating random encounters.

@Xirema Right but how would you decide (if trying to evaluate the number of resistances) how much "random encounters" the average campaign hits? A party might spent almost no time in the wild where they take place, or most of their time there

GcL
@DavidCoffron Pick a heuristic and run with it. Assume two encounters from each table or something

I've had groups in OOtA (which I've probably run the most) that spent 6 months in the caves, and groups that rush through the caves for the next city
@GcL True. You basically just have to take something as an assumption

GcL
8:03 PM
@DavidCoffron I concur. When someone wants to see how the assumptions affect the outcome, they can re-run the data with a different assumption and write a paper post about the implications of the assumptions.

8:39 PM
@NautArch work with DM about type-swap spells?

GcL
@NautArch Can't wizards find and copy other spells pretty readily at low levels?

$$$

GcL
It's 50 gp per level of spell? Not outrageous for some adventurers with a couple of treasure hoards, albeit from kobolds or goblins, in their kitty.

8:58 PM
Assuming DMG generated loot, it becomes vastly more affordable once you reach Tier II
There is also the problem that you need to find spells, which puts it largely up to the DM/adventure

9:11 PM
^^
That's more of the issue
Prior to my precious wizard's demise at level 4, DM had given me two spell scrolls
Mirror image and invisibility
Good news is I think the party tooknhis spell book, so I'll be able to copy his spells pending time and money

10:02 PM
@NautArch aaw man, sorry to hear the wizard died.

10:19 PM
@KorvinStarmast gnome diviner gone, hello genasi evoker
Kinda bummed about the shield bashing battlemaster having died

10:47 PM
So web filters are down at work meaning I can access Meta. Can someone link me to the meta post about the fine cheese collection?

Q: Purveyors of fine cheese!

nitsua60[modeled on this well-posed and highly ranked meta over at WB.SE] We've got some answers that've really gone above-and-beyond in answering rigorously and completely some superlative questions. And by "superlative" I don't mean that the questions are excellent, I just mean that they contain sup...

@NautArch I love gnome diviners. Probably my favorite wizard to play (gnomes just have a divination-esque feel to them imo)

Thanks

@NautArch as the ground hog said: gofer it! :)

@DavidCoffron I was pretty bummed at his death. Time to rain fire now.

11:09 PM
Morning all
The pool man has come to fix my friends pool. He's just called in backup
It appears it has transformed into a gelatinous cube

@Ben The pool or the pool man?

Ben
Lol

What happened to the pool though?

Ben
The pool filter has just been broken for so long, and is only just getting replaced. The only way they could get the real estate to do anything about it was to put in a notice of remedy breach

yikes

Ben
11:19 PM
New TV show: pest control reality show where they have to deal with D&D monsters

"Honey? I think the Tarrasque got into the garbage again."

Ben
Guy rocks up at the house: I hear you've got some kobolds I your yard?
Yeah, they've taken over the garden shed and are using the tools to keep us out of the backyard.

It's like a more mundane Witcher

Ben
Would watch/10

Q: How does the Drow House Captain whip attack work?

Eternallord66In MToF pg. 184 it states as one of the Drow House Captains actions (bold for emphasis): Whip. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d4+4) slashing damage. If the target is an ally, it has advantage on attack rolls until the end of its next turn. The ally bit is ...

11:28 PM
@NeutralVax Sounds like Hilda to me.

user15026
@BESW Yes!

Ooh that sounds cool. I'll need to watch that eventually

I like the show a lot. Haven't read the graphic novel yet.

You should read the web comic Bad Machinery, simply so that I'm not the only person who knows what it is.
Anyway what's everyone's opinion on the Witcher show?

@NeutralVax Not seen it yet, but my gf is a convert

11:39 PM
Intensely disinterested.

user15026
I know nothing about it, and I am okay with that

We've been watching Grimm. About halfway through season 4 now.

user15026
We finished the Mandalorian last night, and are currently watching a mix of Voyager (first time for me) and Downton Abbey (rewatch)

Oh, Grimm's one of those shows, like Haven, that I like partly because of a couple of great characters, partly because it's so obvious everyone's having fun, and partly because over the course of the show's seasons it escalates wildly and complete abandon.

user15026
I haven't seen it, but that description makes me want to.

11:51 PM
Grimm was fun

Right now, I'm trying to catch up on Critical Role.

It's got me thinking about an urban fantasy crossover campaign (that I'll probably never run). Start with Grimm; throw in vamps, slayers, etc from Buffy; maybe witches, demons, etc from Charmed. Maybe maybe some of Dresden (I've only seen the TV show).

Stick with the TV show, honestly, especially for TRPG setting inspiration.

Make some of Grimm's royals into vamps & demons. Have the party consist of Grimms, Slayers, witches, & Wesen.

I'd recommend the Peter Grant novels/comics, though.
