@Eternallord66 Targeting is inconsistently defined in 5e :P
11
Q: What counts as a target for a spell?

Medix2There have already been several questions regarding what counts as a target for a spell; some, such as this Q/A, are regarding glyph of warding as it states: The spell must target a single creature or an area... Some such as this Q/A and this Q/A are about the War Caster feat which states: ...

But there's no general rule saying that, e.g., moving a spell has to follow the initial targeting rules. So it only needs to do so if the spell says it does.

Q: What's the greatest number of hands I can have to annoy my mother-in-law with?

BlueMoon93My mother in law is coming to visit tonight, for dinner. She hates me, and will criticize my food. But tonight is my night. I've prepared the dish she most hates, a beautiful roasted Tarrasque chop, and as soon as she makes her first comment, Oh dear lord, this meal looks dreadful! I want t...

@Eternallord66 Yes, duplicates are still valuable as "signposts" to the primary question. (And thanks to @Medix2 for bountying that primary question - I was thinking about doing it myself before I refreshed the page!)
@Eternallord66 I think it's good practice to leave a comment asking OP to confirm whether it's a duplicate. I think SE also changed the automatic comment when you vote to close something as a duplicate such that it now explicitly asks OP if the duplicate answers their question.
(sorry for all the pings in such a short duration :P)

1:26 AM
@Medix2 is:q works as a shortcut for is:question.

@Nitsua60 True true, but I find typing it out to be more obvious to learners. Like how typing closed:0 is less intuitive (to most) than closed:no

I just got 17 announcer badges and 2 booster badges. Anyone know what's going on?
Nevermind, found it.

Q: Missing publicist badge?

aioobeI've had a link on my webpage to one of my StackOverflow answers for a long time now. For fun, I track it with Google Analytic events, so I know for sure that I've received more than 1000 clicks. Yet I haven't even gotten a booster badge for it. Here's a screenshot for the click events from Goog...

If anyone else is confused.

@Medix2 Makes sense.
@Miniman I only got 11 announcers =(
(But the rep re-calc for questions netted me Legendary, finally :shrug:)

@nitsua60 Hey, congratulations!

@Miniman Thanks--that'd been my "recommended next badge" for, like, two years!

@nitsua60 Yeah...they did that to me, too. It's a bit weird, considering how many other badges would be easier to get from scratch.

@Medix2 The questions are not duplicates because they're about entirely different spells, though they are certainly related.

Tuque Games' D&D video game was just announced: Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance, a third-person action RPG set in Icewind Dale. It's being marketed as a “spiritual successor” to the Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance series, and features characters from R.A. Salvatore’s novels. The four playable characters are Drizzt Do’Urden, Catti-Brie, Bruenor, and Wulfgar. It has single-player and multiplayer (couch and online co-op for up to 4 players). The trailer is here:

Happy St. Lucy's day my fellow Nordics and anyone else who celebrates it

12:38 PM
From yesterdays St. Lucy baking session

1:01 PM
That looks great. Are those .... raisins?
What's St Lucy's Day?
https://www.google.com/search?q=st+lucy%27s+day

Saint Lucy's Day, also called the Feast of Saint Lucy, is a Christian feast day celebrated on 13 December in Advent, commemorating Saint Lucy, a 3rd-century martyr under the Diocletianic Persecution,[1] who according to legend brought "food and aid to Christians hiding in the catacombs" using a candle-lit wreath to "light her way and leave her hands free to carry as much food as possible".[2][3] Her feast day, which coincided with the shortest day of the year prior to calendar reforms, is widely celebrated as a festival of light.

@Someone_Evil Cthulhu Day ?

@goodguy5 They are

It's a normal feast day for many Christian churches, but here in the Nordics (where saints aren't usually venerated much thanks to a long tradition of Lutheranism) it's got some local traditions of its own
It's three o'clock in the afternoon and it's dark outdoors (technically... I guess "Nautical twilight"?) so I I can see the appeal of having a few extra festivals of light rolling around

@kviiri aaaaaaand yet, I somehow suspect that baking small sweets in the shape of the Sleeping One isn't exactly a tradition :P

@Glazius I'll have to check that out

1:13 PM
@Derpy St. Lucy, according to the myth, fed Christians who were hiding in the catacombs
So she was a voluntary servant of the deep ones

XD

2:13 PM
Good morning all.

MOOSE!!!!!!!!!!
\o/ \o/ \o/ \o/

[Cheers music plays]
I feel like that's the most enthusiastic reception I've ever gotten anywhere lol
How's it going?

oh, you know. I guess I'm ok.
:p

lol

:) Actually, things are decent. Finally through the PI planning sessions and the datacenter failover tests, so I can actually sleep at night.
As much as the kids let me anyway :p

2:25 PM
I appear to have an amazing grace hat. Grace Slick would approve.
@Rubiksmoose As Ed McHahon might have said, "heeeeeeere's Moosie!"

@JohnP oh! well sleep is a great start for sure.

hey

@KorvinStarmast Also probably Grace Hopper!

@Rubiksmoose I wonder if her parents realized that her name was enough like grasshopper that they like the humorous implication?

@KorvinStarmast Huh, I wonder.
@JohnP Will you get an actual break over the holidays?

2:33 PM
@KorvinStarmast How is it that I've never thought of this

@Rubiksmoose Yes, our company gives all employees from Xmas eve (1/2 day) through Jan 2 off.

Even funnier is that she's the one who coined the neologism about a bug in a computer process (an actual bug in an old room sized machine) . A moth. The engineers who found the moth were the first to literally "debug" a machine
Oops, no, she didn't coin the phrase, sorry, I guess that term had been around for a while.

@JohnP Nice! That's something to look forward to.

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, my parents are coming down from Co to visit the grandkids. Dad and I will play a lot of golf :D

> On September 9, 1947, computer scientist Grace Hopper reported the world’s first computer bug.
Still humorous enough though
@JohnP Hah! You warm climate people able to do outside things on Christmas ;)

2:40 PM
@Rubiksmoose IN SHORTS! :D

@JohnP Monsters. [jealousy intensifies]

But hey, I spent my formative years in Colorado, and college at 8500 feet up on the western slope running x-country workouts at -12 degrees in the mornings, so I'm entitled. So entitled. :p

Meanwhile I'm sitting here in a room with a bunch of plants and citrus trees that would immediately die if I put them outside right now lol

@Rubiksmoose Building snow forts would be fun but we haven't been graced with snow
:(

@kviiri Actually we haven't really yet either. Not nearly enough to make a fort anyways.
How much do y'all usually get?

2:45 PM
@Rubiksmoose At least you don't need to worry about scurvy !

@JohnP I spent the first decade of life in Arizona, so I got to experience 120 degree summers as well as 60 degree winters. And after moving north -10 winters and mild summers. So I've had some variety as well.

@Rubiksmoose cries in Celsius

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, I'm miserable in the summers. Never really have adapted, and I've been here 20+ years.

@PierreCathé hah! Well maybe in a couple weeks when my oranges ripen :) The limes have stubbornly refused to produce anything lol
@PierreCathé XD

hello

2:46 PM
@PierreCathé 49 to -23. That better?

Character idea: villain who's supposedly Chaotic Evil but repeatedly does Lawful Good things because they're so self-involved and lazy.

@Gwideon hi!

> Party member: "Wait, why did you help us rescue the guard captain?"
> Villain: "Because I already know his patrol schedules and personnel rotations by heart and it'd be a massive waste of time to learn new ones when they replace him."

Just the other day somebody said to me on a chat here on SE "it's really cold here, it's -40." Me: "F or C?" [quick Google] [facepalm]

@Yuuki So... crowley?

2:48 PM
@Rubiksmoose how are you

@JohnP Good Omens, Supernatural, or To Aru?

@Yuuki Good Omens.

@Gwideon Mostly good if you exclude my stomach currently.
@JohnP Very nice.

oof

@Rubiksmoose the last few years we've had ample snow but only quite late in the Winter
Let me check the records...

2:50 PM
@Rubiksmoose By all means exclude the stomach. What a vestigial organ anyway.

@Gwideon eh, could be worse. Gave me an excuse not to be at work today. I'm working from home because let's just say that I need to keep close to appropriate facilities at the moment.

@Rubiksmoose the meterological institute statistics say the average depth of snow in mid-march is something between 20 and 30 cm around here

[googles] 8" to ~1'. That's quite a lot.
For March.

But snow has had time to recede by then so it's thicker (but more loose) earlier in the winter
And it comes in bursts, all too often. One day there's none, the next day there's a few dozen cm of snow everywhere. A couple of years ago on the West coast I recall there having been over 70 cm
over the course of 24h

> "Be careful out there, the temperatures are going to reach -200 degrees!"
"Fahrenheit or Celsius?"
"First one, then the other."

-200 Celsius

-328 Fahrenheit

Formula
(-200°C × 9/5) + 32 = -328°F

@Xirema When we get into negative Kelvins is when it's going to get real freaky

@kviiri yikes! not fun.

@PierreCathé Fun fact: it is possible to describe real world systems in terms that would be accurately represented as having a temperature of negative Kelvin(s).

3:08 PM
@Rubiksmoose true

@goodguy5 @Xirema TIL

new episode of the mando is really freaking good

Mando Kamrissian?

@goodguy5 I'd watch that

nah the mandalorian

"In a universe, where all the 'l's are replaced with 'm's"
"In a Gamaxy far far away, and Mong Mong ago.
Emite warriors battme with Might Sabers and their own Force of Wimm"

With character favorites such as;
Muke Skywamker
Mando Kamrissian
Han Somo
and Princess Meia
4

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, it's a bit of a showstopper at times but OTOH we have quite decent infra and planning for handling those situations :)

@goodguy5 Actually Might Sabers sound even more badass than lightsabers

I did have that same though.
But every time I look at "Muke Skywamker", I giggle and derail my thought.

@goodguy5 N works too. Night Sabers, Nuke Skywanker...

ya gotta be careful with that last one.

3:17 PM
> wank·er a contemptible person (used as a general term of abuse).
But I see your point, yes. :p
FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US!!!

hahaha
anyways

I have to celebrate Festivus, it was invented the same year I was born (1966)

i'm kinda ready for today to be over

3:35 PM
@JohnP I feel like nuking Skywankers is a sensible proposal.

@Yuuki inorite??
\o
Today, I shall watch Scrooged. Tomorrow, I shall watch The Ref and then my minimum standards for holiday movie viewing will have been met.

Have you seen Klaus?
I actually thought it was pretty good, especially since it's a traditionally animated movie in the modern CG-animated era.

i just realized something

It does have some innovations of its own so it's not a complete "hey, all animation was better pre-2000" snobfest either.

Using horror music is great for a moment where a dragon is chasing down the players

3:43 PM
@Gwideon What tracks did you settle on?

@PierreCathé Basically, it's because we scientifically define temperature as a relationship between how entropy changes as we change the energy in a system. Any time an increase in energy causes a corresponding increase in entropy, you have positive temperature [Kelvin]. If an increase in energy causes a corresponding decrease in entropy, you have negative temperature [Kelvin].

@vicky_molokh i have an entire doc dedicated to tracks I might use and um yeah

@PierreCathé Ironically, objects which have a negative temperature tend to be some of the "hottest" objects in existence, since the conditions that produce this behavior tend to involve being pumped full of way too much energy.

@Gwideon Cool. Would you be willing to let others view it?

@Gwideon Yay, it's got Atrium in it.

yeah
@vicky_molokh They had some really good ambiance for actual dungeons

@Gwideon Yeah, Cryochamber records are full of good ambients.

@Yuuki I have not, but it is now on the list.

4:05 PM
@vicky_molokh yeah

@Gwideon I'm listening through the list. Some of them sound like tracks I might end up using, others are too fantasy-ish for my current two campaigns. Thanks for making and sharing it.

youtube recommended has been my friend here

@Gwideon Oh great, the link rabbit hole lead me to this site full of free ambients, where I can conveniently download them and plug them into the player (with the player plugged into Discord's audio channel, for setting the mood for the whole party across the globe).

4:25 PM
yep

The awkwardness of downloading is actually a major reason why I find Youtube playlists off-putting.

@vicky_molokh Youtube-dl can download whole playlists in one go
just type ./youtube-dl.exe https://url-of-playlist
in your favourite command line utility

@PierreCathé Thanks. I remember similar sites and software springing up and either disappearing or becoming overrun by ads and malware after becoming popular, and am not up to date on the contemporary no-nonsense high-utility options.

@vicky_molokh np

@goodguy5 Han fmies the old freighter, The Mimmenian Famcon

4:30 PM
It works on a bunch of other sites too

Ruke Skywarker and Princess Reia and Han Soro also works, if you like R's better than M's.

@vicky_molokh I use a bot that plays music from youtube links directly into a voice chat channel

@KorvinStarmast New strategy: met the Wookie win.

@KorvinStarmast I think a friend of mine went to Famcon

4:45 PM
@KorvinStarmast *omd. And I still like N better (Minnenium Fancon).

5:06 PM
@KorvinStarmast XD Mimmemian Famcon
Again, I know the answer, but I can't back it up... or rather don't feel like looking for it.

Wisdom vs Charisma
Resolve vs Exuberance
Determination vs how strong your soul light shines
Ones ability to withstand being tortured, vs Wesley's ability to withstand the life drain

@goodguy5 It's always just struck me as pure gamism driving that particular split of saves, personally. (On the design-side.)

Likely, but even so.

I wish there were more CHA saves. It really makes me feel like my warlock is just squishy to anything that makes me make a save

@Himitsu_no_Yami If it makes you feel any better, you're unlikely to be hit by a creature trying to possess you, OR a creature trying to frighten or charm you.
Your DM clearly just needs to use more of the latter.

The question is if there's even any of that in this module

@Himitsu_no_Yami You're in the Tomb of Annihilation module, right? There should be a lot more of that.... eventually.

like there's possession of a sort but it's more like you have a back seat driver telling you what to do but making you do it yourself
And in most of the cases we just passed on the save cus we were alright with it

@Himitsu_no_Yami Hmm. Unless the module is a cheating Bungalo, those should still be CHA saves.

@nitsua60 Hey, nits. Was everything satisfactory with the demivery?

5:31 PM
Overrides Willpower→Charisma
Overrides Emotions→Wisdom
Overrides Logic→Intelligence
Curiously, that implies that spells like Hold Person don't literally prevent you from moving, they just make you feel like you can't move.

Humble has a Pathfinder Lost Omens lore archive available.

Overrides Wizards --> Charisma
Overrides Bards --> Wisdom
Overrides not Wizards --> Intelligence

@nitsua60 I agree with this, the adage of "you're thinking about it harder than the designers ever did" comes to mind :)

6:36 PM
@nitsua60 Thanks for pointing that question out. It actually got a good train of thought going. Can an elemental have exhaustion? Yes. But only if you shame change into one.

hey

@Xirema They are CHA saves but they're like the only ones we've seen. And even then so far it's been "make a CHA save or let it enter willingly" and we've been taking the latter option

Hmm. Yeah, there's not a lot of times to show off your ability to resist possession if you're always choosing not to resist possession.

In this case it's the fact that being possessed has major benefits

@Gwideon Greetings. You're probably wondering why you received that letter summoning you here. Simply put, someone in this mansion is a murderer, and I intend to reveal whom!

6:45 PM
@Xirema is very very confused

Such as our beefy wizard having 23 STR, our bard having 23 DEX, our warlock/cleric hybrid having the ability to turn invisible at will, and my character taking no fall damage under any circumstances

@Xirema GM to players during first session: 'You wonder why I invited you all here today. Well, thing is, back in middle school each of you did something nasty to me . . .'

The last session of our LMoP campaign happens monday night. We get to find out whether the party can save Phandalin from being irradiated by the raw mana now surging out from inside Wave Echo Cave, or not.

anyone know of an rpg where you can play a giant kaiju

6:51 PM
1. aren't all kaiju giant? Or do you mean bigger?
2. do robots count?

no I want to play the giant destructive monster. also yeah my phrasing in that question was dumb.

You want to be a kaiju that's giant compared to other kaiju ;)

no
i just want to be a kaiju

shh you want this trust me

nope

6:57 PM
@Gwideon You can play anything in GURPS if you find the right campaign . . .
(Admittedly, the handling of extreme sizes has imperfections . . .)

I haven't played any of these, but I've heard people talk about:
Atomic Robo
Adeptus Evangelion
I'm pretty sure Mutants and Masterminds can handle Kaiju (citation needed)
And I was trying to remember if GURPS and RIFTs had rules for Kaiju

@Gwideon FATE's Mecha vs. Kaiju has Kaiju . . . but played as NPC monsters by the GM.

I've played Ad Eva, and don't recommend it. I would suggest Fate instead, it's way better at using simple mechanics to represent huge-scale chaos.

And Slapdash can support Kaiju, unless you want PVP

okay fate it is

7:04 PM
I suppose if you wanted a short game about people in mechas having mental breakdowns in response to kaiju-induced panic , and strategic mecha combat, then you could try Ad Eva, but only at low levels of play. Otherwise the system gets exponentially broken.

I found the editing, particularly in the Stunts section, to be iffy, but MvK has some cool ideas that I'd totally use with some amount of houseruling/homebrew.

Q: Is there an equivalent to the monkey grip feat in d&d 5e?

RorpWhile I was DMing a D&D 3.5 adventure, one of my players played a character with the monkey grip feat (because he liked the manga Berserk, where the hero has a giant sword). And turned out it was fun. Now I DM for D&D 5e, and I plan to play with this player again, and he might want to play a sim...

Monkey Grip makes me think of the times I tried to make a WoW Fury Warrior build, dual-wielding two-handed weapons.

7:42 PM
anyone tried spellbreak

7:54 PM
@Yuuki I reeeeeeeeaalllly want to homebrew a Barbarian subclass that does exactly that.
I feel like WotC are leaving a great concept just sitting on the table.

As a full subclass, that barbarian should be able to grip more than two monkeys. Maybe they can hold extra monkeys while raging.

> Grip all the Monkeys. You can grip all the monkeys. All of them. What are you waiting for?

8:18 PM
@Xirema ಠ_ಠ

Anyone else have a deebot?

8:35 PM
Been thinking about getting a robotic vacuum cleaner, although I don't know which one to get.
Today is the 13th Friday the 13th since 2013.

@Yuuki Thanks, I hate it.

well today is really unlucky

I ordered computer parts for my new computer and tried not to get any of them to arrive today... and then UPS said "hey! Your package is going to arrive early, and now it's going to arrive today! ^_^"
It's the power supply too. 😨

I need computer parts to complete my pc

Have a good weekend, stackizens
@Yuuki I like ours, but the past couple days, he's been complaining about his brush

Why are graphics cards so freaking expensive
mumblesstupid bitcoinmumbles

IIRC only some models are worth bitcoining.

they just so happen to be the ones good for gaming pcs

I thought prices were getting better with the bitcoin craze dying down somewhat?

9:30 PM
not for nvidia ones really

Be careful when buying used cards though, also because bitcoin.

yeah gonna get it new
nvidia ones are still stuck at the 500 dollar mark

@Gwideon FWIW, I went with an AMD card for my new build. Was a lot cheaper than the equivalently placed Nvidia card. Context though: I do a lot of discrete Heterogeneous Computing, and the Double Precision speed on AMD cards is something that actually matters to me, and tends to matter very little for gaming performance.

hmmm i'll look into that
@Xirema what's the equivilant of a 1070

@Gwideon Probably the RX Vega 56, according to several sources found through google.

9:42 PM
also um is a 1060 decent

@Gwideon Yeah. My previous build uses a GTX 980, the 1060 is about half as expensive and only about 20% slower.
The GTX 980 was probably overkill, since I only started playing heavy high-GPU-use games with stuff like Apex Legends.

@Gwideon I looked into that line. The AMD RX570 seems comparable for a lower price

yay I found one that is so much cheaper
I hate how over priced the nvidia stuff is

Yeah. Nvidia will get you that extra edge in terms of gaming performance, but it's just not worth the extra $ you're paying for that slight edge. Might as well just pay for a higher tier AMD card.

Although I'm unclear about the impact of power draw, if that could be expensive enough to offset the difference in price between GPU models

9:51 PM
also um i'm trying to get the basic parts to get it running. um I've gotten the case and i'm getting the ssd. I'm just really wanting to finish this

@MikeQ Technically relevant, although I usually build PCs expecting them to last at least half a decade, so I usually shell out for PSUs that are over-watted by ~50% to make sure it'll keep going as its performance inevitably degrades.
(Although I definitely overshot on my first build. I unwisely jumped on the SLI/Crossfire bandwagon for my first build)

Over-watted? Does that mean having a PSU with higher wattage than what is listed for the other components?

@MikeQ Well, a higher capacity. Like, PSUs are rated for like 500W, 600W, etc.
I went with a 900W PSU for my first computer. Waaaaaay overkill, I'm barely using 500 at peak load.

/r/IsTodayFridayThe13th ranks up there with one of the weirder subreddits I've seen.

I just hope for the love of god that all goes well

9:54 PM
It's not absolutely insane but it's so innocuously bizarre that it's weirder than some more straight-up crazy subreddits.

10:05 PM
Okay, first pass on the Path of the Titan Barbarian subclass. Gives you the ability to one-hand wield two-handed weapons, bumps small characters up to medium, and while raging, you can use Two-Weapon fighting with your two-handed weapons.

10:19 PM
d6

thank you, chat, may I please have another?
d6

@Xirema mmm size modifications are tricky, iirc

@Yuuki Yeah, but they already cracked open that can of worms with the Rune Knight, so......

10:38 PM
@Yuuki Small to medium aren't really a problem

@Someone_Evil Medium to Large though?

@Someone_Evil Well, level 10 also bumps the character up to Large.

@Xirema Hadn't gotten to that part. Large is awkward..

An easy fix would be to make it rage-only, I suppose, but it means a lot of features of the subclass are only activated by rage.

The cleaving blows is also awkward, because it might make the rage end early if you aren't also dealt damage during that round

@Someone_Evil Hmm. That's a good point. Will need to examine that.
> As an Action, you can make a special attack that strikes multiple creatures in front of you. In liu of making an attack roll, each creature in a 10 ft cone must make a Dexterity Saving Throw....
Do you think that would fix it?

Also, since you're probably dualwielding greatswords/mauls with this subclass, it should probably be a bit clearer that it only uses the dice of one of the weapons. (I don't know if this is necessary

@Someone_Evil ......... Ooooooorrrrrr.......

@Xirema I think so. There's already precedence for an attack which hits multiple things so it should be fine

> damage equal to your weapon's damage dicedamage equal to your weapons' damage dice
Grammar saving the day as usual.

It might still benefit from an example

@Someone_Evil Yeah.

Balance-wise it largely comes down to action economy. With attack + offhand at that level its 6d6 + 3Rage + 2Str. 10ft. cone is probably 3 targets (expected high-end), so total damage is 6d6 + 3R with the now one, and 12d6 + 3R when using both.
Titanic Stature and effects that push 5 ft sounds awkward for folks playing on a grid. Probably solvable for the table, but maybe its better to do it for them? Maybe say that 5 ft is reduced to 0 and any greater distance is halved?
Because you are you, I assume you've done some basic (or even detailed) DPR analysis on this?
