@MikeQ Agreed. But "change the ranger's tactics in an interesting way" is not the kind of goal the favored enemy feature has; we're talking about a totally different design philosophy at that point (cf 4e).
I think the problem is less with Favored Enemy and more with the environment the feature lives in.

@MikeQ That requires that leveraging a monster's strengths and weaknesses isn't primarily a matter of player knowledge, which is not really fixable
short of some FATE-y solution where the ranger's player can narrate new weaknesses into existence

@MarkWells The Monster Slayer archetype implements this somewhat
@BESW True. Since it's possible that the ranger rarely (or never) encounters their favored enemies, perhaps it's best to leave it as a minor benefit, and not a primary feature of the class.

@MikeQ Or, as above, a benefit which extends beyond direct interaction with that particular subject.

Q: How much will studying magic in an academy cost?

RorpHere is why I ask this question: I want to create a wizard character that goes on the best magic school in the Eberron settings: the Arcanix. But, I want to say in his background that he has a debt of a big amount of golden pieces that he got to pay for his studies. I wanted to find how much it...

10:27 PM
Morning all

hey there @Ben and @JohnP, how're things going?

Ben
\I was gonna post an image of "which of these nine medieval cats are you today", but then I realised #6 had some genitals in its mouth.

user15026
@Ben For some reason this made me crack up laughing.

@Shalvenay howdy howdy shal!

Ben
@Ash Mission accomplished? Haha
@Shalvenay Hey hey hey

10:29 PM
@Ben cat, amirite? :D

@NautArch how're things going? sure has been a while :)
@Ben now a better time for discord?

@Shalvenay doing well. Miss ToA, but getting some minor traction in my game. Learning a lot about my new players and how to build a game for them.

Ben
@Shalvenay I'll be free after lunch :)

@NautArch ah, what are you playing?

@Shalvenay 5e, homebrew world/camaign
but have come to learn my players are a bit...tactically challenged
they really do make the worst decisions at the worst times

Ben
10:37 PM
@NautArch Makes for the best fun :P

@NautArch is that the dndb you sent me?

@JohnP No, that's another campaign :) THe one I sent you was originally for Nitsua60's ToA campaign.

Ah, OK. Gotcha.

@Ben They got unbelievably lucky last session. I've been trying to help them out by giving them opportunities to plan in advance. THey've passed on those opportunities twice.
Last session, I set them up for a rescue caper. Gave them the house location and layout.

@NautArch plans never work anyway.

10:39 PM
They very smartly decided to case the house. And then two of them (out of 4), decided to do it RIGHT NOW. And begun the operation.
@JohnP I was going to do my best to help the plan work :P

Ben
Is it running the game at all?

The two who broke into the house for the rescue rolled the two highest initiatives. That basically saved them. THe guards never really had a chance to catch up.

@NautArch nothing more dangerous than a dm being "helpful"

@JohnP I'm learning that :)
But now I've got another plot hook for them. So they've got them going for them.

@NautArch I haven't been a good dm since Ad&d.

10:43 PM
@JohnP Heh. I'm not sure I am, but i'm trying. Well, i'm off to my game night. WIsh my wizard luck!

@NautArch may you smite your enemies, and failing that may your death be one the bards sing of

Ben
Ruining*

The Affinity company (a non-cloud, non-subscription rival to the Adobe Creative Cloud for graphic design and publishing software) has a store-wide 20% off sale in celebration of the official release of their layout software "Affinity Publisher."

If anybody's interested in a non-Adobe professional design suite, this is probably the place to look.

hey there @BESW -- did you get a chance to read the paper I linked you last night?
hey there @SunnySideDown, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

Ben
@BESW I have passed it on to all my artistic friends :D

user15026
10:52 PM
@BESW curious face

@Ash Hm?
@Shalvenay Not yet, just read the abstract. My brain doesn't wrap itself around those kinds of papers very well, and this week is focused on things like chasing people down about badly written contracts.

@BESW aaah

@Shalvenay I keep getting distracted by incredulity at the notion that we need historical justification for the idea that a public office's power shouldn't be used for personal gain.
That doesn't seem like the sort of thing we should demand precedent for before we accept it as a standard.
@Ben [cackles maniacally] Yes, more nails in Adobe's coffin.

@BESW yeah, it's the "common sense isn't common" problem, unfortunately.

> The challenge of overcoming corruption in public life is multidimensional in nature. The adoption of administrative procedures and legal safeguards, however important such measures may be, will not bring about enduring changes in individual and institutional behavior. For governance, in essence, is a moral and spiritual practice whose compass is found within the human heart. Thus, only as the inner lives of human beings are transformed will the vision of a "genuine civilization of character" be realized.

Ben
11:01 PM
@BESW muhahahahaha

user15026
@BESW Mmm, just mentally cataloguing this as an option for people I know who want to get away from Adobe.

@Ash Ah, yes. Non-cloud, non-subscription is great. (you pay once, and download it onto your own system forever)
Adobe treats its customers so badly, but it's integrated so thoroughly into worldwide workflows that it's hard to jump ship.

user15026
@BESW nods Yeah, that's excellent. I know a few humans who might apprciate the thing.

As soon as somebody comes up with a viable alternative, though.... the cloud is not a good look for professionals and we're starting to realize that.
Affinity looks to be doing their best to compete, which I love.

Ben
In theory, the cloud is ok... for accessibility and variable storage.
But it is terrible in that they can close down at any time, no guarantee of your information being recovered, and with everyone's stuff in one place, more of a target for hackers.

11:09 PM
They pushed massive performance upgrades to Designer and Photo two weeks ago, then released Publisher with a store-wide sale and an awesome "you can use Photo and Designer features inside Publisher without switching apps" feature.

Ben
And cloud based software is a whole other ball of needles

@NautArch BTW did you miss my earlier message about that? Never saw a reply from you...

@Ben Adobe pushed an update midway through a major project and broke my cross-references and text variables.

user15026
@BESW that's terrifying

Ben
@BESW I just got an involuntary shudder reading that.
I don't use adobe or anything like that, but I know them feels

11:20 PM
Every year they release a massive update that forces you to re-save old work in the new year's format.

user15026
@BESW I feel like the reasoning here is "because we hate everyone"

Ben
@BESW CAD does that too. They use perpetual licenses and subscription etc... but you upgrade when you download the new software installer, and you can still save in old formats, for anyone that hasn't upgraded to later versions of the software yet
@Ash EA-dobe

user15026
@BESW This is me at work so often

Ben
@BESW How to piss off an IT tech: Ask "have you tried turning it off and on again"

11:25 PM
@BESW yep,

user15026
@Ben hey, that is a cliche because it works a lot.

That fixes like, 90 percent of my computer problems

Ben
@Ash Oh yeah, it's the first thing I do.
They make a joke of it in the IT Crowd, but it is literally the first thing you do.

@Ben And if that doesn't work, out comes the axe.

Exactly

user15026
11:28 PM
@Ben Most of my support calls are "turn this thing off, turn it on, OH LOOK IT IS BETTER"

Ben
The issue is, when that doesn't work, and you're 3/4 of the way through deconstructing the network to try an find the issue, and someone says "Have you tried turning it off nd on again"....

user15026
Ah yes

Ben
Calm... peaceful birdsong... steady breaths...
Lol

@Ben then the answer is yes
I mean, if you called an IT call center, they are specifically supposed to ask you that first
Mainly because it's been shown to fix a lot of issues
It's not like it's a personal insult to your intelligence

user15026
Yeah, if it's the first interaction, assume that no matter how much you've done, you're gonna get that, because there are usually steps we gotta follow to prove we did our jobs correctly.

Ben
11:32 PM
I actually have my clients trained. (I'm so proud of them). They call up with an issue and they say "I've tried turning it off and on again, reset the network, disconnected to printer and plugged it back in, but it's still not working"

Yeah
I'm pretty sure the boss gets mad if you skip stuff

user15026
@Ben That's nice but it's not possible in all shops.

user15026
@trogdor They can yes

user15026
On hte flip side I love people who go "I rebooted the thing" "no you didn't" "YES I DID" "the uptime on hte device is 92 days, so no, you did not."

Ben
@Ash No. I'm in specialised IT support, not just general "I stuck a bagel in my CD drive and now it doesn't work" IT shop support. Haha
I have specific clients, and I go out every month or so, update things, fluch their netowrks, etc.

user15026
11:35 PM
I work in ISP support, mainly rural residential fixed point wireless so thats a whole different animal

user15026
(sometimes literally.)

Ben
I also flush* their networks*…
Lol
@Ash Fortunately I've never had any personal experience with that side of IT Support

I almost ended up doing call in tech support
I was not looking forward to that
I don't think I can handle that kind of work

Ben
@trogdor Whatever pays the bills I guess

user15026
@trogdor You'd be surprised what one can get used to. I hated it at first, and now I tolerate it :P

11:39 PM
Not if I go insane in a month

user15026
(I still however hate making phone calls.)

user15026
@trogdor I'd prefer that not happening, because who else would yell about Xandri books with me

Ben
Actually I think my anxiety would probably get me fired haha

@Ash XD
I would probably do that from a padded cell

user15026
giggles oh good

Ben
11:42 PM
Actually along those lines... there is a 50/50 chance that I either don't have epilepsy, or that my epilepsy is coming from my amygdala, causing a "fear" response in my attacks

@Ash Priorities will be straight (jacket)

user15026
@trogdor snortlaughs

user15026
Love it

@V2Blast that's...better than at least I would have expected -- it at least acknowledges the historical issues present and tries to provoke some of the right questions

11:54 PM
@Shalvenay Yeah, I was worried about it when I clicked on it
It seems to combine two seemingly different issues, but I do think it approaches them from the right perspective

@Ben That's... I don't know if that's good or bad.

I mean
The "I don't have it" would be great
The other thing is confusing at best

Ben
@BESW The amygdala-based epilepsy is the lesser of the two options. If it's just a physical response ot anxiety, that is much better\
