Q: Is it possible to play as a necromancer skeleton?

HaloI am a new DM. One of my players, my boyfriend, wants to be a necromancer skeleton that basically can't die, sort of like Voldemort with the horcrux. We are starting off at level 1. Is it at all possible to do, and if so, how would you do it? I'm trying to be extremely careful not to make him...

1:00 AM
@HotRPGQuestions Yes. First, open a game other than D&D. Second, have fun in a system that isn't actively trying to channel your creativity into its tightly-fit boxes.

hey @nitsua60 -- would you be cool with Mike playing Zindash for the final boss battle in the mino-maze in the case you can't make it to the game tomorrow?

@nitsua60 lol
@HotRPGQuestions Yeah my answer to that question is "play something that isn't D&D"

@trogdor -- speaking of not-D&D-things, my brain came up with something that might be a viable adventure to run in GSS, if you want me to PM it to you on Discord or w/e....

I wish I got that answer when I wanted to play a lot of things you just can't be in D&D
@Shalvenay I would be happy to see your idea

@trogdor pinging on Discord :) unless you'd rather I share it here

there's been a debate going on in the /r/dndnext Discord for nearly a day now
the question: "What are the chances of rolling the same number on 2d20s?"
"To rephrase: What are the physical chances of me matching* the number I rolled on the first die in order to proc the feature?"

5:31 AM
1/20, I'd think. The probability of the first event is 1.
anydice.com/program/63cc oh look the math backs it up
1/20 probability.
Yup.
@V2Blast I found you a source.
anydice.com/program/15d69 this is the probability of the feature triggering though - slightly less than 1/20th of the time, because it only procs on 19 out of 20 sides.
19/400ths, if I have hastily done this mental math correctly. 19/20*1/20.
You may quote me on this.

6:22 AM
Looks correct to me :)
I often use visualizations to teach probabilities to my table mates --- not very rigorous, but gets the job done and often piques their interest in probabilities which is nice to me.
You could visualize this as a 20x20 matrix of results. The diagonal represents successes, which number 19 once we leave out the (1, 1) case.

phir ek baar

What?
I'm sorry, I don't understand.

Ben
7:45 AM
Well wow
I just lost 80 rep after a user was removed

8:09 AM
@Shalvenay whoops didn't notice that, either was really fine but wtv XD
I was watching Avengers Endgame

8:43 AM
@kviiri looks like Hindi. apparently it means "once again". I don't know why they said it though

9:00 AM
@Ben Interesting. I lost 25. Oddly enough, 5 of it was from my homebrew.se question.

Ben
9:19 AM
I lost 60 from arqade and 20 from rpg
Must have been a fairly long-term user?
@trogdor Did you enjoy it?

yeah actually
I was a little disapointed when I watched Infinity War
I thought Endgame was much better

@trogdor The mangling of time travel while at the same time daring to make fun of other time travel films? (That's a common complaint I've read.)

Ben
@trogdor I hated Infinity war. Haha

@V2Blast I would've guessed Icelandic :P

Ben
@vicky_molokh Yeah there were a lot of loose ends there
Be careful though... Spoilers

9:32 AM
Except I think Scandinavian languages don't usually have double vowels (Finnish does but it's a different kind of language anyway)

@Ben I dunno if I hated it but it wasn't as good as it should have been

@kviiri "ek" means "1" in Hindi

@V2Blast I think it's "oak" in Swedish, and maybe "I" the pronoun in some other Scandinavian language

@kviiri The only one I can think of is aa as an archaic 'spelling' for å

@Someone_Evil Oh yeah, true

Q: In the current era, do any wizards survive from 1372 DR?

Quadratic WizardThe D&D 3e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting places its base year at 1372 DR. Someone once told me that, at a point between this and the year of the current D&D 5e products, a sundering of the Spellweave killed off the wizards of Toril en masse. Did any wizards survive this event, and do any wiz...

Q: Who is depicted in Dragon Heist's cover?

BlueMoon93Who are the characters depicted in the cover of Dragon Heist? I've just started DMing this, and I'm reading through the 1st chapter, but I don't recognize the characters here. The beholder in the background looks like Xanathar. None look like Volo or his missing cousin Floon.

Thanos, is that you!?
What are you doing in a D&D adventure!?

@doppelgreener Hey everyone needs a change of pace now and again ;)

4:30 PM
I've been hearing again and again, from people here in the chat, about D&D 3.5e players needing to understand the tier system and to gain some system mastery in order to create characters that do not over/under-perform when compared to the rest of the party.
What about if I wanted to help my players achieve the level of optimization that's ideal for a certain PF Adventure Path?

@Zachiel "how, as a D&D 3.x DM, can I help my players create characters at the correct optimization level for a given adventure?"

@Shalvenay Subjective?

@Zachiel Good Subjective should be possible, though, no?

Mmmmh maybe yes. I'll throw down something when I have some time to spere, then.

A: Can Pass Without Trace affect anyone within 30 ft. at any time while the spell is active, or only those who were within 30 ft. when it was first cast?

mattdmIs there another example in the rules where you might make a single check and then use the same result with or without a modifier depending on future circumstances? I can't think of one offhand but that doesn't mean there isn't one.

Q: Which is the common name of Mind Flayers?

Q PaulWould the average person in the Forgotten Realms call Mind Flayers "Mind Flayers" or "Illithid?"

was wondering when that would hit hot
