2:00 PM
@goodguy5 Is there a reason you don't want to just fix the title?

You can't actually vote to close as a duplicate of a question with no answers, I am pretty sure
As in the close dialog won't accept that as a valid choice

@Rubiksmoose You're right. But the answer doesn't specify If and only if... so maybe it's just a set of criteria for which mark duplicate is true, but is not inclusive of all cases. A partial answer.

@Rubiksmoose because the title is based on a misunderstanding and the answer addresses the misunderstanding and I'm not sure how to proceed.

We could probably ask the person that posted the answer, but it's pretty old and I doubt they'd respond.

If I'd seen it when it was first asked, then it could have been solved easily, but now there are other issues.

2:01 PM
@Rubiksmoose I never touch people's titles aside from fixing minor grammar and spelling issues.

@ColinGross I've rephrased a bit

@doppelgreener Ahhh! a ghost!

@goodguy5 I'm reading the title as matching the body. Am I missing something?
@ColinGross that's fine of course (do what your are comfortable with), but there's nothing wrong with adjusting titles. Titles not matching body is a very common problem and something that we explicitly do fix.

The title asks if the bugbear joins combat in a different Round than the players, who's "first round" do you go by?

What is "the first round of combat"?

Let's mark it as a dupe and close >:-)

2:07 PM
@goodguy5 I mean I agree that the title is very much based on a misunderstanding of the rules, but I'm still not certain I see what you are saying. Sorry if I'm being slow this morning lol

Players start combat with something, like they're want to do.
later. Bugbear Koolaid-mans in and clotheslines a player.

Is the "first round of combat" only the actual first round of any combat?
or does the "first round of combat" change when more enemies enter?

@ColinGross I'm not sure I agree that that is adupe actually.

@Rubiksmoose It's a proper subset and it answers the question,.
The non-subset question would be, "does the bugbear count as a separate encounter?"

@ColinGross Has nothing to do with the bugbear ability though which alone makes it enough to be at least non-obviou IMO

@Rubiksmoose surprise doesn't? or characters being surprised mid-combat?
The bugbear question is about the character being surprised mid combat.

2:11 PM
@ColinGross the other question doesn't mention the bugbear ability at all

@Rubiksmoose because you'd have to change the noun out for the thing doing the surprising?

I guess it answers my question, but I don't care for it.

@ColinGross I'm not sure that is explicitly true actually.

@ColinGross SpaaAaAaAAAaaAAce GhooOOOoooOoOoooSt!

Is it a duplicate question if we swap bugbear for rogue? or cave fisher?

2:13 PM
or doppelganger

who? where!? [sweats]

@Rubiksmoose No? I read it as there's an ongoing combat that moves into an adjacent room. There is a bugbear in that roomy lying in ambush. Does the bugbear surprise the characters?

@ColinGross the question has at its core a misunderstanding. Though I don't think it is a bout suprise midcombat. I think it is a misunderstanding about what turns and rouns means
@ColinGross ah yeah I see. Hmmm

@doppelgreener There's a poodle in my struedel, and his name is Minky Boodle....

I'm not sure, actually. rererereading, I think there's not a misunderstanding, but idk

2:14 PM
@goodguy5 let's start over, are you still saying that the title doesn't reflect what is asked in the question body? Or am I misunderstanding your point completely.

I think the answer is the correct one... the bugbear was taking turns at the beginning of combat... namely hiding and readying to ambush.

^

@goodguy5 Yeah I'm getting a different vibe this time as well
And I see @ColinGross point.

The question title would be a bit more clear if it was asking if the surprise applies to the first turn the bugbear takes or the first turn of the encounter.

There's a fine line that I'm still not sure about.

What defines the bugbear "in combat"?

And IF something can truly enter combat later, how does that interact with "first round of combat" abilities?

2:17 PM
If a bugbear gets put in a box and the lid is shut, how many bugs and/or bears are in the box?

@goodguy5 Yes. That's a non-duplicate question. Can something be surprised mid-encounter. I would answer yes. If the bugbear was teleported into a melee, it would be pretty surprised by the characters that were already in combat. Where is @GreySage... i'm about to invoke RAW and I know he lies that.

@goodguy5 I'm going to backtrack this a teeny bit before adressing that: just so you know we won't (or shouldn't) dupe a question based on its title alone. If you are asking a different question it isn't a dupe. So if that is your primary concern I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Now if we are worried about the clarity of the question itself, then yes that should be addressed.

Questions have to be substantially the same such that a relative newbie could understand why they're being pointed from A to B and find an answer there they understand for their situation.

Well, My "concern" is that the title is misleading. I'm not as sure as I originally was.

@goodguy5 I think the title could be made clearer.

2:19 PM
@ColinGross Do you have a suggested wording? MAybe that would help me out.

Frequently we don't ask the question as succinctly nor directly as we'd like until @Rubiksmoose makes a half dozen or so comments on it.
>The question title would be a bit more clear if it was asking if the surprise applies to the first turn the bugbear takes or the first turn of the encounter
Which still matches the answer.

@ColinGross but it might be making a logical leap that changes OP's question at least superficially.

"Does the Bugbear’s “Surprise Attack” feature apply on its first round of combat or the encounter?

That is my concern on first thought
At least I understand what you both are saying now though

I don't change titles, so unless the OP wants to do it I'd say leave it.
is @vicky_molokh around?

2:27 PM
Hmm?

with regards to rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/141121/…, is thrust vector appears to be indicating a method for controlling propulsion. The three examples you have indicate different methods of generating the thrust fan, unspecified, and ionic. Wouldn't it be on the thrust generation method to indicate if it works in atmosphere or high g?

It's ambiguous - one entry seem to indicate that the 'tag' includes thrust generation method (turbofan or ducted fan), but another entry implies that it is or can be vacuum-suitable.

So as I read it the question is based around whether the fighting kite's mention of being usable in vacuum is a statement of what's generally true of thrust nozzles or whether that's specific to fighting kites. Does that sound right?
(Disclosure: knowing nothing about EP I'll not be answering anyway, but I enjoy reading the "hard sci-fi" questions. Maybe it's because I'm mourning Mars Rover.)

@vicky_molokh Yes. Seems like it's missing a key component... how is thrust being generated, because thrust vector just tells you how it gets pointed.

Well, there's an entry on how it is being generated, but I already mentioned that in the question.

2:35 PM
@vicky_molokh They seem to conflate the two in some cases and specify separately in others.

@nitsua60 That's another way of looking at it. Either way, I indeed hope that people answering will have some familiarity with the books/setting itself, or with the source material on which they were based in this case (that's some literary archeology, but it has shown moderate success with EP in the past).
Thankfully, the answer isn't urgent, as in the upcoming session the party should be fine using actual ducted fan propulsion systems (as atmosphere is available).
/me stares at the recent edit of rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/9722/eclipse-phase-and-the-soul, and tries to figure out since when contractions and parentheses are considered errors.

You're playing with original Eclipse Phase and not the Fate version right?

I'm playing the FATE version (with houserules), but I'm using the original books to figure out what makes sense within the fiction.
Thus researching the technical parameters of the original.

Ah, gotcha

@vicky_molokh I look at that and assume someone wanted to correct the spelling of "emotional" and needed to find six other characters to change so the edit would go through.
But I might be wrong.

2:43 PM
@nitsua60 Seems like a case of a trivial edit to me.
@doppelgreener Right now the party's dolphin is taking the turbofan flight Stunt for the possible need of out-of-water mobility. Others will probably be taking morphs which are capable of travelling on land right out of the box.

@vicky_molokh Perhaps. Worth starting a meta discussion if it's bothering you--it's been a while since we've had a community sounding-board on minor editing practices.

@nitsua60 Not sure if sarcasm.

No, no sarcasm. Sorry if it seemed that way.

@vicky_molokh That they're being revised out doesn't mean they're considered an error.

(I fully recognise that I'm the loud newcomer raising fuss over edit/style wars.)

2:48 PM
Like that editor may be thinking, I would also imagine an entire paragraph that constitutes the vast majority of the post does not need to be a parenthetical.

@doppelgreener Was largely a comment on the way the edit comment was phrased.

@vicky_molokh I mean honestly we could deal a lot more with newcomers raising their voices when they see stuff that bothers them. Old folks too.

@vicky_molokh To the extent that's true, it also means you're the fresh set of eyes helping identify broken stairs.

Our edit summaries won't always encapsulate everything we do in the edit.

@Rubiksmoose Rephrase please? I want to make sure I understand you correctly.

2:49 PM
I will leave edits with a message of "fix typo" when I am also adjusting grammar or punctuation

@doppelgreener Ah, I sit informed. Though in this case the note itself was more detailed anyway.

@vicky_molokh Newcomer input is valuable and not received often (because often they are too overwhelmed/shy/unsure). There certainly possible issues that experienced people just "get used to" and do consider fixing without someone new pointing out that it isn't right.

@Rubiksmoose Thanks.
I'm just unsure how much boat-rocking is still a welcome fresh look, and how much is just boat-rocking that only annoys everyone.

@vicky_molokh No problem :)

@vicky_molokh So in this case, for instance, a meta along the lines of "I may be newish, but this seems like a trivial edit that the help center/edit privilege guidance should be avoided. Casting no aspersions on the editor, was this a good edit?" would probably generate some good conversation.
Though I suppose you might be careful taking advice from this crowd: we're largely self-selected as a group of people who like speaking out =)

2:54 PM
@vicky_molokh I wouldn't really worry about that too much. It isn't like Meta is something is intrusively present in everyone's lives. If people get annoyed with your feedback they largely don't have to interact with it. The mods might feel compelled to make sure concerns are addressed if nobody else is, and I'm sure some will point it out if you are trending on being too naggy or whatever.
Just be polite and respectful and receptive to advice and answering and I think you won't have any issues.
That is my thinking anyways
@nitsua60 Too true lol

That said all things in moderation; the community will frown upon someone opening a lot of metas that don't seem constructive.

Moderator moderation advice is moderation. Seems a little meta =)

A moderate moderator moderates moderately in moderation.

(Though only a moderator for mah duration.)

@Rubiksmoose Lest they be mod-rated.

2:59 PM
@Yuuki Rated M for Moderator

@vicky_molokh I can rock two issues on a boat. If you want to offload one.
As long as it's not about date formats, I probably won't care enough to get ruffled.

Alrighty time for Japanese class.

@Rubiksmoose How much moderation would a moderator moderate if a moderator could moderate moderation?
2

@doppelgreener Here. Take your damned star.

hehehehehe

3:02 PM
That's the first chat message I haven't downvoted in a long time.

(And now to catch up on what happened after last reading of the chat but before submitting the meta . . .)

Who moderates the moderators?

@vicky_molokh I think V2Blast is the one I've seen making the smallest edits. I think it's his thing.

@doppelgreener Ask your ma how maw-ch moderation a moderating moderator would mod or, ratings aside, mudder eighteen mods.

@Yuuki Moder' mudder. A CaPiTaL crimE.

3:32 PM
I wish my research would do itself so I could spend all my time playing the piano and RPGs

@Yuuki I understand all of that perfectly

Is there a way I can disable certain popups? like the ones about angrygm?
that guy is poop

@goodguy5 angry poop? What don't you like about him? The opinions proffered? The walls of text?

@ColinGross I feel like his content used to be mostly ... well... content. It was disguised as an angry wall of text, but now it's just an angry wall of text disguised as content.
I think that it's either:
He feels he needs to keep up his bit and goes overboard

or that he's high on his own farts.

@goodguy5 I'm entertained. You could write a grease monkey script to omit it from your browser... but you'd have to handle the edge case where angrygm was the only thing in the feed.
@goodguy5 I thought the farts thing was only for prius drivers

3:40 PM
I feel like Prius drivers have successfully merged into society.
Priui (priuses? priusi?) used to be unique and edgy and a statement, now it's just another toyota that gets good mileage.

@goodguy5 Priucetta is the plural.

huh, it IS prii
https://toyotanews.pressroom.toyota.com/releases/toyota-announces-the-plural-of-prius.htm

"pree-eye"

@goodguy5 I think that's the sub-infinitively small form of the plural

I don't understand

If I'm not making sense, it's because I'm not making sense. I'm being absurd. Infinitive is a grammatical term.... which I always read as infinitely and it sounds small. So i just thought I'd play on words with what sounded funny to me. Also, whenever someone corrects grammar with the form of the thing it reminds me of people who are high on their own farts.

3:48 PM
ah, it all comes back to farts

farts.

@goodguy5 I'm afraid not. You are also however welcome to vote on the feeds this room receives:

Q: RPG General Chat: vote for your feeds!

Alex PChat? Feeds? SE sites have associated chat rooms. This site's main one is RPG General Chat. Check it out! SE chat supports feeds, which shows up as little ticker pop-ups from time to time. Since really we want the chat (like every site feature) to be useful to the users, it makes sense to have...

@goodguy5 Knowing him a little bit personally, I'd lean toward the former rather than the latter.

@nitsua60 Does he drink coffee, tea, or hard beverages?

@ColinGross Umm... why?

3:52 PM
@nitsua60 I would very much support The Angry GM rebranding to something that doesn't perpetuate some of our hobby's worst stereotypes.

@nitsua60 I was wondering how well you knew him... and I find people that consume none of those options suspect.

@ColinGross I will confirm that the doesn't drink none of those.
@ColinGross That said: by way of full disclosure, I guess you need to suspect me now =\

The Angry GM is nitsua60's infant child.

@nitsua60 I've always suspected you. Now it's double suspectivity!

Having tags visible in the feed would be helpful. Some questions are interesting if they're about 'my' systems and uninteresting if about a system I don't know well.

3:55 PM
@doppelgreener OMG no. If only because on a recent podcast he described how thankful he was to his dad for a full year of playing HeroQuest--which the dad hated--with Angry as a child. I'm not nearly that good a father =)
@ColinGross [sheepish grin]

Though ignoring based on tags would be useful as an alternative.

@vicky_molokh There is a watched/ignored tag feature
Have you looked into that one?

@doppelgreener for the feeds that pop up in chat?

@ColinGross Not for chat feeds

@doppelgreener I ignored a bunch of tags. Questions from those tags still show up in the chat feed.

3:57 PM
Oh, OK. Yeah chat feeds are not remotely personalised.

The ignores, they do nothing.

hey someone asked the non-duplicate question! rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/141131/when-does-combat-end

The feed is simply subscribed to every mainsite and meta question, in addition to a bunch of blogs and news sources as voted on in that meta I linked above.
The meta questions get posted as chat messages by The Oracle, of course, with mainsite questions just going into the ticker.
There is no capacity for per-user filtering.

@vicky_molokh This is an interesting thought. I'd vote for it.

Q: How Trivial an Edit is Too Trivial to Make?

vicky_molokhI know that trivial edits (and style wars/most style edits) are inappropriate on RPGSE. But the question arises, how trivial is trivial? For example, I recently saw this edit on an old question: one genuine typo fixed, parenthetical paragraph replaced with a regular one, and a contraction was rep...

4:13 PM
Oof, people did not like my self-answer to that question about mount sizes. XD

@Xirema Maybe they're like me and they just don't like self-answers.
You should accept it anyway. The green check will show em' what's up /S

Lol
I don't like accepting my own answers.

@doppelgreener thanks

Kinda feels like... I dunno. Some weird esoteric nepotism.

@nitsua60 that was the feeling I got.

4:18 PM
@Xirema Just repeat this mantra in the mirror: You're good enough. You're smart enough. And, gosh darn it, people like you.
@Xirema You're your own nephew? I think that's a different problem.

@ColinGross One out of three ain't terrible. ;)
@ColinGross FryScreaming.gif

One of my favorite broad-leaf compliments is "You're pretty and smart and everyone loves you."

@Xirema Should be StephenFryScreaming in Brittish.

@ColinGross I'm actually thinking of Phillip Fry, from Futurama.

@goodguy5 Is your favorite needle leaf compliment, "You're evergreen" ?

4:21 PM
AKA the man who is his own Grandpa, due to Time Travel shenanigans.
(It's as horrifying and hilarious as you'd think)

@Xirema Yes, but the British actually have the problems of being their own relatives... because of European royal family inbreeding consolidation of power

@ColinGross Gotta keep some difference between the royals and the peasant masses.

1. I appreciate the joke.

2. wouldn't a needleleaf compliment be very specific?

Like "Colin, not only do I like your avatar, as it reminds me of the music video for Take on Me, but Ah Ha, but I also think that you have thought provoking discussions in rpg chat"?

@GreySage Yeah.... like the number of chromosomes. Zing!
@goodguy5 Well that's lovely to hear. I'd totally help you out in Stardew Valley.

@ColinGross brutal

4:28 PM
@ColinGross Is it still a zinger if the royals are proud of it?

@GreySage Good question. Can't shame the shameless?

a royal reading that: "ha, it's true, the peasants are neandertals. this is a good joke."
a peasant reading that: "ha, it's true, the royals are inbred. this is a good joke."

@doppelgreener I'm entertained.

4:59 PM
@ColinGross "You're prickly, smell nice, and will substitute for tea in a pinch."

6:38 PM
Action economy I hate you

oh?

7:14 PM
I need these NPCs to spend a move action every three turns. I need them to take a full round action to recover 3 maneuvers every now and then. Maybe I should go light on boosts and recover less often, maybe I should use regular full attacks whenever I can using boosts to move. Maybe the "all your attacks next turn are sneak attacks" that comes with spending a turn doing nothing but recovering maneuvers is worth recovering often. I have no idea.

7:28 PM
what system?

I believe they play PF.

Blarhg, more work keeps getting pushed to the top of my stack, meaning I have a bunch of old work half done that I don't have time to finish off.

got to go now

@GreySage :'( that is frusterating
I'm pretty bad at finishing off old partially complete tasks.

7:45 PM
@Rubiksmoose herd yaks together. Spend a day finishing all the yak shaves?

8:43 PM
@ColinGross: I'd appreciate not being specifically called out (even if your intent is to support me) in your answer to that meta, specifically because I've cut down substantially on "correcting minutiae" that are just a matter of preference. (I'll still make non-subjective corrections and try to clarify wording when something really needs an edit for some other reason anyway.)

@doppelgreener his book is written with a lot less wasted text. I like it.

@ColinGross Are you the originator of yak shaving, or is that another member of a couple here?

@V2Blast If people are dissing you for edit mania, I wish to come out in support of your sincere efforts to improve the quality of our questions and answers. Editing is a thing, and is encouraged. I'll find the link to the SE/SO blog post on that in a mo ... something else popped up.

^

9:07 PM
Heh, thanks. I appreciate the support. I try to find a balance where I'm improving questions and answers but not in a disruptive way. :)
Can I star a message just because it's praising me? :thinking:

@V2Blast Stars are anonymous we'd never even know it was you ;)

Hahaha

@V2Blast You star how you want, you star you.

9:34 PM
@V2Blast hmmm, the old SO blog post isn't where I thought it was ... but it encouraged editing, and editing again, in a more detailed manner than our help page does

Oh, Happy Valentines day for everyone else on the other side of the world :D
And if you don't have a special someone this V-Day to love you, well I do, and so does a bottle of rum :D

Lol
No rum for me thanks
More for everyone else
Of they want it
Pour it into a heart shaped glass maybe? XD
Unless you just want a practical container

Ben
I would have loved it if it was more realistic

@goodguy5 I play PF, yes. And 3.5e, and 4e and 5e if it matters, but this NPC is for PF.

Realistic hearts aren't as romantic

@trogdor nor as red.

11:28 PM
@trogdor I disagree.

Lol

Ben
Perhaps not, but the effort made in finding one would be enough for me

@BESW agree to disagree then, realistic hearts are gross
XP
That is why I only eat unicorn hearts

Lol
XD
Did he eat unicorn hearts?

11:36 PM
Book one, unicorn blood.

Oooh ok
Yeah ok

Ben
@BESW I was going in a different direction, but this... I don't.. I'm not...

That is my point.

@Ben There's a phrase you probably didn't expect to type today.

Fair enough

user15026
@BESW Okay, from the bottom bit I saw when I popped in the room I thought I knew what this was and then I saw the whole thing and it got better and weirder.

@BESW HA

Ben
@BESW Very true hahaha

11:41 PM
@Ash yeah I was confused for a second too
But it got really good when I realized exactly what it was

user15026
@trogdor What about unicorn poop?

Hearts ok
That's all
Not hooves, not blood, definitely not poop
Not fur or even unicorn steaks

I always worry about how much edible glitter is in those cookies.

Much better. gives cookie

user15026
@BESW This has seriously gotten me through some terrible days.

Ben
@BESW precisely
So I was just reminded of a conversation I had a while back with a friend - they'd bought the Twisties that turn your tongue blue when you eat them.
We talked about it for about 20 mins, then I asked if they'd tried them yet.
They said they "hadn't had the apatite"
I replied with "I didn't realise you needed any special minerals for this, but ok"
Apatite is a group of phosphate minerals, usually referring to hydroxylapatite, fluorapatite and chlorapatite, with high concentrations of OH−, F− and Cl− ions, respectively, in the crystal. The formula of the admixture of the three most common endmembers is written as Ca10(PO4)6(OH,F,Cl)2, and the crystal unit cell formulae of the individual minerals are written as Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, Ca10(PO4)6F2 and Ca10(PO4)6Cl2. The mineral was named apatite by the German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1786, although the specific mineral he had described was reclassified as fluorapatite in 1860 by the German...

People say that dad-joke people have a terrible sense of humour. The reality is we don't care for the jokes... It's the reactions we crave

The Squatty Potty Prince has only two acting credits on IMDB, but he's been in a number of theatrical productions and many more boring advertisements.
