8:00 AM
Pixie dust can be used as non-toxic disinfectant in small quantities.
Try to only use a pinch or two for each scoop of gnomes.

Should you be unable to precure pixie dust child tears are an acceptable substitude

oooooh child tears yep have plenty of those
my tears count for that right? :P

Hmm. Worth a shot
Want me to fetch my whip to help you out?

8:17 AM
not necessary
I can actually make myself cry with some small amount of effort

Well that got creepy fast.

yes, yes it did

2 hours later…
9:58 AM
Hey

Hey! How's the pancreas doing?

That hasn't changed much, currently waiting for the doctor to ask some more detailed questions (no chance yesterday, and doctors are busy with emergency stuff during the weekend, so a few questions have accumulated)
However, the high fever from the weekend seems gone, the thorax drain seems to be doing its job and slowly running dry, and food was tasty again today.

That's good!

Yes! So much better. It's still unclear how long the core problem will take, but at least it seems like the side complications are getting out of the way.
Also, I feel like sitting in front of a computer and communicating, which is nice.

that is good
I hope you get a doctors attention sometime soon

10:28 AM
All of that sounds pretty good :' D I'm glad to hear it

10:41 AM
Tonight I fried carrots and onions and green beans in sesame oil with garlic and pepper and ginger, then fried salmon in olive oil with calamansi juice and cayenne pepper. Tossed them together and served on whole wheat noodles.

11:40 AM
@Anaphory So glad to hear you're getting better. :)

@BESW @trogdor I don't recall if I said, but on the weekend I mentioned to the Cthulhu Dark author something: we were never quite sure what exactly we should do with a character who goes totally insane, but that it never turned out to be much of a problem since that only ever happened right at the end. He nodded and said he'd very carefully engineered it that way. Playtesting ho! o/

oh, I didn't realize that that was a thing he was trying to do with it
to get it to happen at the end

11:55 AM
Cthulhu Dark?Is it like Call Of Cthulhu?

@MaikoChikyu It's a horror game in a similar vein, but very lightweight and simple.

Ok.
By the way i am thinking of trying out a system called Anima. Does anyone have experience with it?

Cthulhu Dark's ruleset fits on both sides of a single sheet of typing paper with room to spare. It's designed for quick-start one-session games, and unlike Call it's very much focused on the helplessness of the protagonists.
But it's not particularly focused on mystery-solving, like Trail, either.
Anima: Beyond Fantasy?

In the one i played i was really helpless. Also yeah.
From a glance it looks like D&D and WOD had a child.

Call of Cthulhu is... well, the Basic Role-Playing engine is open to a lot of adjudication by the GM. On its own the CoC system doesn't have much in the way of mechanical push toward any particular genre or playstyle.

12:03 PM
Is Call of Cthulhu also the d20-adapted game that makes the folly of statting all the elder gods so that they can actually be defeated?

It tends to default towards high-resolution mechanics while allowing narrative creativity to override hard mechanical barriers to whatever extent the GM can be persuaded to allow.
Call of Cthulhu uses the Basic Role-Playing engine (percentile dice). There is, however, a Call of Cthulhu d20 edition that's been modified for the d20 System.

I mean Anima when i say it looks like the child of D&D and WOD

I know next to nothing about Anima.
[rummages]

I played a game on steam called Anima Gate Of Memories which got me interested in the system/setting

@MaikoChikyu IIRC a friend of mine got into Anima and started by making an expert AI system for character optimization. Sounds a bit nasty to me.

12:05 PM
@Shalvenay and @kviiri might be able to help with Anima questions? Maybe @SevenSidedDie too.

That's literally all I know about Anima :P
And it might've been Exalted too, now that I think of it.

Lol
I don't have any particular questions. I just never played anima before or have seen it played so i wanted to ask if there was anything to watch out for.

12:22 PM
This carved globe, made from joining the lower halves of two ostrich eggs,may be the oldest known depiction of the New World.The globe, dated to 1504, contains the phrase HC SVNT DRACONES ("here be dragons"), which appears above the coast of Southeast Asia http://www.ancient-origins.net/artifacts-other-artifacts/globe-ostrich-egg-world-s-oldest-depiction-new-world-008514
Using an egg for a cast must be nerve-wracking.

hello
@BESW Can I have a question re: Fate Economy?

12:42 PM
Fate Economy?
Fate as in the system?

@MaikoChikyu Fate Point Economy. It's an emergent subsystem in Fate family of games which describes how characters gain and spend Fate Points, usually in cycles of abundance and scarcity, though not always.
My question is whether I should make (as a GM) conscious effort to spend more Fate Points invoking and compelling against the players when they are low on FP, and also, whether I should feel obligated using all FP in my GM pool each scene.

Ah. Well from personal experience starting to award people more when they are low on that resource encourages them to spend it more often so the important question is: Do you want your players to spend their points to accomplish epic feats or would you prefer it if they avoided situations where they will need to perform epic feats using their brains
Also don't feel obligated. Those points are to be used for dramatic encounters rather than usual encounters so trying to deplete them in each session will make the game less dramatic.

unless each "encounter" is dramatic

If you can pull that off then good job.
I tend to build up to things among sessions and then have one big encounter.

I'm a fan of super-aggressive pacing
also, I don't really have "encounters"

12:50 PM
I'm not sure Fate recognizes the notion of "dramatic" and "usual" encounters. If a scene is not dramatic, then why play it?

I'm in it for the story, not combat or adventuring. if the scene does not advance the story (e.g. shopping scene or uneventful travel") it's not worth playing
just go straight to the heist and use FP to establish how you prepared for it

It doesn't have to be dramatic in order to advance the plot but i understand your technique.

or say "it's three days later and you arrived at your destination - I'll give you all a Fate Point if the way was difficult and you are all out of provisions"

@eimyr I've always been uneasy with the FP economy, but I think you should just hand out points by compelling/invoking whenever you think it's appropriate. If you keep ending up with players who never have fate points or ones who always have an abundance, you need to find the specific reason for that - there can be many one can't address in the abstract.

@eimyr You're not obligated to use your scene's FP up. There will even be plenty of scenes where you simply cannot because there is nothing to invoke. They're there to be available, but not a must.
@eimyr Also, in general, I don't think you need to make any change of pace -- but I do suggest making a point of offering compels to players who've used up all their fate points when an opportunity presents itself. It's a present! One with teeth attached!

12:57 PM
@doppelgreener I always forget that if I simply invoke their aspects they get the points after the scene
ALWAYS

@eimyr Compels immediate, invokes later. Yeah.

I'd guess, as a player with no fate points left, I'd be looking out for good self-compels all the time. You still get Fate points from those, right?

Of course

I look for self-compels when I'm full on FP, to stockpile them and also, because it's safer this way
#hoarder

I think the whole compel idea is a good way to disconnect drawbacks suffered by the character from being displeasing to the player

1:01 PM
I think the guideline here would be:
- as a player, look for self-compel opportunities all the time
- as a GM, look for opportunities compel your players all the time
- do this no matter how many fate points you/they have
- as the GM, grin evilly when your player has no fate points left, doubly so when you're offering them a compel
@kviiri a while ago, BESW and Lord_Gareth were speaking about compels. BESW had described that a player was about to be subject to mind control, was prepared to spend almost all their fate points to resist it -- but when offered a single fate point to actually lose to the mind control, they took a few seconds to think about it then accepted unconditionally and took the fate point.

@doppelgreener Yeah, the good ol' "trust me, it'll be more fun this way" :P

Lord_Gareth was amazed because in freeform gaming such a prospect usually takes at least half an hour of negotiation‌, while the game gets frozen up to discuss exactly what mind control means & doesn't mean, where the limits are, what they'll be forced to do, etc.
Fate Points as a mode of rewarding complication short-circuited that negotiation process entirely into a five second decision.

When I describe Fate aspects to my friends they're like "oh, sounds like edges and hindrances from Savage Worlds"
But when we were playing Deadlands: Reloaded, pretty much all our party had rather tame and boring hindrances.

@kviiri ahh, the minmaxed "flaws" of many a game

I remember spending 3 fate points in order to be able to watch anime IC. Now i feel like running a FATE game.

1:08 PM
Our sheriff was illiterate, big deal. The others in the party could read for him. My character feared cats and loved to talk about it, but it seldom kicked in because no one else remembered what cat phobia actually does (it's a boring -2 modifier when in presence of cats).
Stuff like that.

@MaikoChikyu which anime did you choose? Please say fate/zero

Right, Fate aspects are Not That.

No game no life

Supposedly, the GM is supposed to grant bennies for role-playing hindrances, but "oh gosh, I can't read, can someone else read it for me?" is not really interesting role-play because it's just cruft tagged on a character's personality for build points and not an actual personality trait.

Fate Aspects are "here are things true about your character" that are often double-edged, and critically, come with Fate Points that outright reward you powerfully for playing straight into all the bad stuff that can follow from your character traits (even the positive ones).
Atomic Robo's super strong -- but that means he often over-estimates his strength, so if he uses his super-strength, he's probably going to horribly break something important.
There's a point where he tries to break out of a prison in an airship, and does so so sucessfully that his prison entirely detaches from the airship and plummets a mile into the ocean below.
So his strength is entirely positive but we can still play into its complications via compels like that.
Atomic Robo's also an invincible robot built like a tank, but we can play into the complications of that: he's extremely heavy (weighs over a ton) and has a critical weakness to magnets which, if powerful and used right, can knock him out cold.
Also, the Tesladyne field manual (i.e. the survival guide for field agents & scientists in Atomic Robo's private military & science company) advises that nobody ever stand near Robo during a field fight, because he has a perfect 100% track record of becoming surrounded in explosions in every fight he's ever been in. He can survive those just fine, but his human comrades not so much and they're better off keeping their distance.
I have seen games that try to suggest you have flaws and try to make you pay attention to them (e.g. D&D 5e) but they only do so much and you're usually best off making your flaws have as little impact as possible. Fate on the other hand rewards you for actively exploring as many flaws as you can find and playing into them to the fullest and makes a player feel OK to explore those flaws freely; I haven't yet seen another game that does that.

1:17 PM
@doppelgreener DnD overall isn't very good with the "failure is fun" bit. That's exactly what I mean by disconnecting "character has fun" from "player has fun" :)

@doppelgreener Better yet, Flaws encourages to find a way that your super-positive, carefully worded High Concept has a hidden catch that's worth compelling

@eimyr DnD totally fails on that point

@Alphaeus and so does a number of other systems

Quite true
because, like most games, games = playing to win
Playing to win = not doing/having bad stuff

@eimyr "So I see you're playing a dryad....... what are the odds these enemies get out some herbicide?"

1:19 PM
HAaaaaaaaaaaahahahahah

(This is a serious thing BESW and I contemplated for my dryad character in our Amaterasu game.)
@Alphaeus in fate, exploring all kinds of bad stuff = how playing to win happens. in fact, minmaxing a character necessarily means losing all the time!

Well, kinda along that note I had a group that went full plant-hippy in DnD once.
Made the villains an enclave of Blighters
:D

@doppelgreener Remember when we played Morts and I tried to light the fog on fire with my character that was essentially a collection of food puns? That WASN'T a good self-compel.

@doppelgreener That's actually really cool. I keep wanting to get into Fate but never have. Tell me, does fate have an online SRD/OGL element that I could use to get my feet wet?

@Alphaeus fate-srd.com
@Alphaeus Fate is free...

1:23 PM
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Free = Superb in my book

Thanks mate

no worries, make sure to check out FAE too

I need to head out to run my pathfinder game
Take care everyone

Cya mate

1:25 PM
I mentioned Pathfinder and i am not called heretic. I am finally home.
9

@MaikoChikyu this is a big crowd and we respect all playstyles. Have fun!

@MaikoChikyu Hey, I love PF

PF has many friends here.

I mean, if we like DnD, then anyone worth their skin should also like Pathfinder as a slightly-more-sensible revision of DnD

@Alphaeus 13th Age > D&D5e > PF > D&D 3.5 > D&D 3e
now let's fight

1:30 PM
Haven't played 13th age.
So can't say that
What I will say, is this:

@Alphaeus Well, I and some others here consider 4th edition to be a slightly-more-sensible revision of DnD, but I think that also aligns quite well with people who don't really like DnD much in general.

Right.
My mentality is... PF > DnD 3.5e > DnD 5e > DnD 4e > DnD 3e

@kviiri I didn't include 4th in this progression for the same reason I didn't include Dungeon World or OD&D. These are fundamentally different games

While I love the older editions of DnD for their charm, I can't help but realize they were borked on many levels

@eimyr 13th Age is quite similar to 4th edition, isn't it?

1:32 PM
@kviiri Perhaps?

1:43 PM
At least it has powers
:)
Or a similar mechanic.
I'm having a serious urge to play FAE with my friends, too bad most of them are rather wary of new systems.

2:08 PM
@Alphaeus @eimyr What are these progressions measuring or comparing?

Preferences of systems
In relation to DnD-based systems

Ah, okay. Well I'm in the same boat as what eimyr said -- some of those systems are too different to compare.

Agreed, generally

@Alphaeus 1,000% free, with tons of Worlds of Adventure for Fate available for pay-what-you-want-including-free because they're already paid for via patreon. (They generally break even or make a small amount of profit.) My favorite among those is Masters of Umdaar, a laser fantasy game like He-Man or Thundercats.
@eimyr Yeah, I'm not sure we handled that one right.

Cool, that sounds really good
I'm juggling work and reading that right now

2:26 PM
Also the links eimyr provided were legit; there's a PDF copy of Fate Core available, and a PDF copy of Fate Accelerated. Both free. Then there's the Fate SRD site which is a full reproduction of both (except for illustrations), which also incorporates after-the-fact developments, commentary, and clarification from the developers as they ongoingly work to improve the system.

@MikeQ Personal preference.

3:04 PM
@MaikoChikyu As a community we aim to embrace all games and playstyles. Except for FATAL, which we keep at a safe quarantine distance and examine via binoculars.
deadEarth has similar quarantine restrictions, but can be handled safely with the right hazmat equipment for comedic examination.

@doppelgreener lmao, what's so bad about those two? Never heard of them, really, except in passing jokes.

Most of the rest of the worst RPGs ever have comparable quarantine & safe handling restrictions.
@Alphaeus FATAL and deadEarth each embody and mechanise almost every single offensive ideology on the planet. DeadEarth does that but also gives you a character generation process that involves rolling over 600 dice -- and possibly makes you reroll nearly the same number at least once -- for just one character, and during character creation you must make three, and probably all three will die and/or become unplayably crippled during character creation, or else will die within hours after.

The CENSORED

Yep.
They're bad. They're on the worst RPGs ever list for a reason. That list isn't just being facetious.

I gotta read that

3:08 PM
@Alphaeus To put it lightly... it's obscene. And unplayable, both in terms of "no human should play this" and also in terms of "this system is too complicated to comprehend, let alone execute"

Just how in the flippety flip did someone say "Haha, Isa make-a yousa disa game, ya"

@Alphaeus That sounds like a Jar-Jar accent and if he was involved that would make the situation only a little bit more believable.

Reading the FATAL rulebook is so disturbing and mentally taxing, I would equate it to reading the Necronomicon while vomiting uncontrollably. For reasons that are difficult to explain, I attempted to read the rulebook myself, and I would never recommend it to anyone, ever.

@doppelgreener That was my immediate reasoning, yes :P

@MikeQ While the Necronomicon is vomiting uncontrollably, even.
I mean, us vomiting uncontrollably while reading FATAL is just a given.
This is why we have the quarantine procedures though.

3:16 PM
I've only heard one story of people who attempted to actually play the game. They were stuck in character creation for around 6 hours (and required copious amounts of booze just to tolerate that) and eventually gave up.

I just gave up reading the full review of it
I'm at work, so laughing that much isn't particularly acceptable

The simple version is... DnD-like setting, except you effectively roll a d1000 (or more) for everything, and instead of successes or failures, you have to look up results on large tables that were written by socially maladjusted and perverted (and grossly uninformed) 12 year olds

Interesting.
Yeah, I noticed it they said it had a system for determining anus size

But it's never "so bad it's good" or "so bad, you just have to see it". It's just really, really bad.

i read that FATAL review. I msut admit, i think some members of my table would actually want ot play it

3:26 PM
In other words its like some cut-rate comedian attempted to remake Monty Python's Holy Grail
Holy Grail is so non-sensically bad it's a classic
Someone trying to take themselves serious and doing a remake would end up with this

No. None of Fatal is remotely funny or amusing. Talking about how ridiculous the game is, now that could be funny sometimes, but the book itself is just... sad.

Oh wow
It's THAT bad
Not even twisted British humor?

No?

You don't sound confident
:P
That said, I'm in no danger of playing this

I cannot fathom any culture in which it would be considered entertaining. It's unclear if it was intended to be humorous at all.

3:31 PM
I'm sure there is someone in some obscure subculture of alt-life furry goth teen demons that would enjoy it

See, there's two big issues. First is the flavor, which can be summed up as "Deranged". Maybe, maybe, there's a subculture out there of very sick and confused teenage boys who would be interested. But then again, I doubt they would have the social capacity to interact with each other and form a cohesive group.

I think it might be a good place to switch topics. Sounds like we're moving into "not nice" territory

The second issue is the mechanics. Even if a group was somehow assembled, the game mechanics are so overbearingly complicated, it's basically impossible to play. The flow of doing any action involves rolling a d100 (or higher), looking up a table, then possibly rolling again and looking at more tables, and so on.
@Adam I agree. I am just trying to nail in the point of why this game shouldn't be explored. I don't mean to advertise it or rouse interest.

Don't worry, interest not aroused

OK, then. Topic switch: does anyone know why anyone would ever use a smite spell in 5e? (BTW would this be a valid question on main?)

3:36 PM
@Szega for the effect

Agreed. For the effect

@NautArch Those are so underwhelming..

Ditto
Well, no one said it was the best effect....

@Szega blindness and frightened are not underwhelming

I mean, there are possibly better spells, ofc, but situationally speaking it's a good spell

3:38 PM
neither is lighting up an invisible enemy with branding smite

And Banishing smite banishes, which is awesome

but I haven't used a smite spell for a very long time. MOstly because of my +3 Cha which is just too low to risk a failed effect. I'd rather get the extra damage on a divine smite.

Hmm. I have to say I didnt consider all of them. But the low level ones seemed so meh. eg searing smite

Searing smite is the weakest out of the bunch for sure.

I took a look at blinding smite vs blindness: the "normal" spell is a level lower and needs no concentration. The damage added is not exceptional for a 3rd level slot
also, conc can be broken before you hit with it
taking up conc is just too big a price I think, there are a number of buffs that would be way better

3:43 PM
The normal spell also isn't a paladin spell, and doesn't do any damage at all. Smite spells add to the normal damage for your attack, and you can still use your divine smite on that hit

Yeah, but you get it 6 levels after a caster gets it
And you don't have that many slots to burn

@Szega You are correct. Searing smite can provide extra damage output, but it's not particularly reliable. In general, it's a weak choice.

True. I'm not saying they're golden spells that you should be casting all the time, but they can each fill a niche that you might not otherwise have covered. For example, it doesn't matter how early other casters get blindness/deafness if your party doesn't have any full casters

I just can't see myself preparing them... This whole idea was brought up by the forge domain having searing smite as a domain spell and me not having any idea why the spell exists

@Adam unless you're fighting something with a fire vulnerability

3:48 PM
@NautArch Yup.

@Szega i have zero prepared
but again, that's mostly due to my lower charisma than i'd like.

@NautArch Fire vulnerability and a weak constitution saving throw and not high enough melee attack to risk breaking the paladin's concentration.

@Szega It's something that I imagine you'd prepare reactively. If you were fighting in an area or in a situation where a particular smite could be useful, you use it. Otherwise you keep it off the list.
In the same way that you don't really need to prepare things like raise dead or remove curse until the need arises.

@Szega IIRC, you can use a smite spell and Divine Smite together.

@Adam Well, yeah. But then they start gumming up domain slots :(

3:50 PM
So if you need Big Damage NOW, that's an option I guess.

i just turned 15th level and keep bless, command, cure wounds, protection form evil and good, shield of faith, dispel magic, revivify, aura or life, aura of purity, find greater steed

@Adam I do prepare remove curse. There are some nasty and quick ones

as a vengeance paladin
@MikeQ it ain't easy to break a paladin's concentration. Hopefully you picked up Resiliency (CON) or warcaster.

Plus you have your aura adding your cha to the save

@Yuuki It would be cataclysmic if your diviner friend rolled a 20 at the start of the day :)

3:53 PM
In fact, if you multiclass Warlock, I think you can spend three spell slots on a single attack (smite spell, Divine Smite, Eldritch Smite).

@Szega And if they didn't use up domain slots, then your prepared spells would be "gummed up" with situational stuff too.

@Adam exactly. Paladins are save machines.

@Adam I don't really get your point. I would prefer practically anything else in that domain spot if I could choose.

Are hexes unlimited in pathfinder?

Forge cleric would quench a lot of things too I suppose. What about having create water on the list instead? :p

3:56 PM
@MaikoChikyu No. They just use a different form of limitation, compared to spells. Spellcasting is limited by a fixed number of daily usages, whereas some hexes are limited according to the target.

I'm sorry I'm just being silly now
The spell is there as a domain spell for thematics probably more than anything. And players will use it if they find that it fills a need.

@Adam It could be plain burning hands or even unseen servant

@Szega yeah, i'm not super keen on my domain spells. i've rarely used hold person. but i do frequently use misty step and haste.

@NautArch Actually the other spells in the domain are rather good, so I can forgive it. I was just wondering why it was there
fluff is the obvious answer

@Szega which domain?

3:59 PM
but it is just so bad a spell

I'd wager $20 on them going "Searing smite sounds like something a cleric working at a hot forge would get. Let's give it to them"

@Adam Eh, water's not the best quencher IIRC. You want an oil or fat or some kind.

forge

@Yuuki I think you're right.

@MaikoChikyu Other hexes have theoretically unlimited usage, like cackle, but only work in certain contexts, so they're limited by applicability.

4:00 PM
Okay, looks like it depends on what you want out of your metal.
Water makes for the hardest metal, but can cause distortion and cracking.

@Adam Yeah. But they could've slapped on +d6 damage and/or forget the save ends
This is just unusable

I'm still pretty annoyed that Tempest Clerics get Destructive Wave at 9th level as a domain spell.

I'd disagree that it's unusable.

@Szega that's basically hunters mark with fire damage
which is fine :)

@NautArch Not even close! You only get the damage for one hit, then save ends. Which means it will deal 2d6, maybe 3d6 on a good day
over 3 turns

4:04 PM
@Szega Where are you getting this Domain from? I can't find anything about the "Forge" domain online

@GreySage Xanathar's Guide

@GreySage It was an unearthed arcana entry that they added to Xanathar's Guide

@GreySage UA and Xanathar

Ah, I thought you were talking about Pathfinder

Jinx!

4:05 PM
@Szega that might be all you need to kill a troll. It would do twice that amount to anything vulnerable to fire damage, and since it sets the target on fire, it could maybe be used to counter invisibility (depending on the DM)
Some of the smite spells also work for any weapon attack, which can be a boon since divine smite has to be a melee attack.

@Adam Well, you are right. But I could prepare inflict wounds to hit for 3d10 and not break concentration for the same 1st level slot.
I will stop whining anyway :) got it outta my system

You could. But I'd posit that you don't use the smite spells because of the raw damage output. You use them because of their additional effects. The extra damage is just something nice on top

@Adam Ok, but searing only does damage. It being fire damage, the most common magic damage ever is not really that impressive.

Again, it ignites the target in flames. That's not just flavor: it's part of the effect. That may be useful for certain things.

@Adam Mechanically it only does damage. There are no other effects of being on fire from the spell.

4:12 PM
@Szega It's a level 1 spell. At low levels, it can be useful, sometimes.

and you can upcast it

@MikeQ I will do a trial by fire (hur-hur) and see if I ever use it in practice.

From the spell itself yes. But I distinctly remember that there is some creature that has a chance of being banished to its home plane if it is engulfed in flames for more than an instant. This spell would trigger that. And I could also see, and personally would rule, that being on fire would effectively nullify invisibility.

@NautArch And deal 3d6 damage with a 3rd level slot?

@Szega yup
@Adam while i'd love a ruling like this, that takes away the specific option of Branding Smite.

4:15 PM
@Adam Well, you would. I would not. So it is rather unreliable.

@NautArch Perhaps not nullify it then. You might have still have disadvantage, but now you can technically see it, and so could cast any spell that requires sight.

@Adam i dunno. i still think if you want to negate invisibility, you need to use branding smite. but if the guy is running around something flammable (like web?) maybe there's an effect.

@NautArch I just can't imagine somebody having full benefit from being invisible while also being on fire. I suppose you could rule that the fire itself is invisible too, which I'd only accept without contest if anything I picked up after turning invisible also turned invisible with me.

@NautArch The fire spreading to anything else would be a GM ruling...
@Adam They don't turn invisible?
Per the exact wording of invisibility (the spell) they do.

The web spell says "Any 5-foot cube of webs exposed to fire burns away in 1 round" I'd say being in the same square as somebody who is actually on fire counts as being exposed to fire.

4:21 PM
@Adam Ok, yes, I will give you that.

@Adam i hear ya. logically it makes a lot of sense, but it's a cheap way of getting a 2nd level effect at 1st level.

@Adam You can conceal something under something invisible? the hell

and that doesn't sit 100% with me

@NautArch True. After you bringing that up, I would definitely tone down the benefit. Maybe something as simple as "they can't hide in plain sight anymore" but still have all the advantage/disadvantage stuff aside from that intact.
@Szega That second part starts with "I would" which to me signals that it's his personal ruling, but not an official mechanic.
I feel like the flames should do something but maybe not nullify invisibility entirely like branding smite does.

4:27 PM
@Adam All this "rulings over rules" makes keeping things consistent between GMs really difficult.

Indeed it does. Definitely leads to many YMMV situations.

4:40 PM
@MaikoChikyu Alright, so I've been polish up mechanics today on your RTS Tabletop. Magic is turning out to be simpler than I thought, so that's moving fast.
Things finished so far:
Personal stats for your Lords (your PC)
Locations/benefits for towns
A map (general)
People (Commoners, Soldiers, Priests, Producers, Engineers, Merchants)
Soldiers stats and training levels and basic combat dynamics
Engineers abilities/basic dynamics
Producers abilities/basic dynamics
(training levels for both Engineers and Producers too, btw)
Priests are partially done (they are directly tied to/the source of magic, so that's taking a bit)
Merchants are fleshed out in my notes, haven't typed them up yet.
Buildings are fleshed out in my notes, haven't typed them up yet
So that aside, the only big thing left is working on travel/distance mechanics as well as the overall handling of "Jobs/Actions" (Jobs are already typed up, as are combat actions)

Q: Burninate [draconic-bloodline]?

MindwinWhat the draconic-bloodline is about? Is it relevant? Should we burninate it? If not, can we do a tag wiki on it?

5:18 PM
As a further note, I'm aiming for dynamics that are logical, interrelated, but simple
Because when you're dealing with something like this, you don't want complexities on every little aspect of it.

1 hour later…
6:31 PM
hello!

Hey mate
Just getting ready to leave
But hey nonetheless :P

@Alphaeus lol, take care!

howdy @DForck42

@NautArch hello!

on the good news front, it really seems like my DM has changed his attitude. Although I have a feeling it's a storyline change (the suffering stage is over and now we're in the final rush as heroes)

6:35 PM
@NautArch yay!

but in general, we're having muchmore fun at the table - and that's what i care about the most.
laughing, joking, great battles

we're starting my monthly game up this weekend :-D

nice!

@DForck42 Hello!

@NautArch good!

6:36 PM
@NautArch Hooray!
@DForck42 What are you going to play?

@DForck42 and i'm about to start book 12 of the dresden files :)

@NautArch coo! which one's that? I don't have the numbers memorized
@Adam I'm dming
5e, storm king's thunder

@DForck42 Changes
just finished Turn Coat last night

@NautArch ahh, really good book!

i've been super happy with the series

6:38 PM
@DForck42 Nice! My group was going to play that one, but we've since drifted apart :/ I hope you guys have fun with it!

@Adam that's sad

@DForck42 I do hope at some point i can play with @nitsua60. I've never done a published adventure and i don't think we ever will.

my plan for this group is that we'll play as long as there's me and 2 players
and I have a waiting list of players, so...

I'm going to be finishing up the battle of Brindol soon with my group in our 5e conversion of Red Hand of Doom. If not this weekend, then the one after is my guess. Aside from a nifty two-tone breath weapon and a few spells though, the General of the horde just seems like another fighter. I'm trying to come up with some ideas to give him a little more juice than just that. Do you guys have any idea how I could spice him up a bit?

@Adam i know nothing of the module, but what about giving him some legendary actions where he can command troops to act?
call in reinforcements, air strikes (magical bombardments), etc.?
seems like something a general should do

6:47 PM
@NautArch I was thinking about something like that too. There's a warlord stat block in Volo's guide that I was going to use as a base. Would be pretty easy to tweak the legendary actions to handle that.

@Adam ooh. yeah! I like the frighten action, too. But I'd say definitely calling in an air strike (fireball/lightning/etc) could be a third option.

Danger close?

danger mouse?

Well, the warlord can already command another creature to attack with advantage. I suppose I could tweak it so that a nearby creature could instead cast a spell. Maybe one action for a 1st level or cantrip, two for a 2nd level spell, or 3 for a 3rd level. That way, the players have the option to direct the fight they start focusing the creatures around him.

7:05 PM
my only concern with the command creatures bit is that you'll need a lot of creatures on the table rather than itnroducing them as needed
but I guess that isn't really an issue, you just move creatures in and then you can command them.

Indeed. My biggest concern though is that the players are pretty low on resources. They've been fighting an uphill battle and will only have time for a short rest before the big fight. They'll probably have near full health, but the cleric and wizard will be low (basically out) of spell slots.
But at the same time, they knew going into this that it was a siege from a massive horde, and they made the decision to burn through their spells as fast as they did.

hmm, that's a tough situation for a dm

Yup. I want it to be the hardest challenge that the PCs have faced thus far, but I don't want it to be guaranteed death.

7:27 PM
there's always the perception check to find a healing potion or two :)
but blasting through your slots knowing you haven't reached the BBEG is often a path to TPK

@NautArch on a person trying to kill you, lol

@DForck42 on the battlefield

I can just see it like a Jackie chan fight where both sides are trying to take a drink from it
@Adam what lvl are they?

fountain of health - have to decide to go and drink or continue with the battle
or cure wounds glyphs spread about
those would be mighty hard to see with a much higher perception check

There are some NPC clerics around the town that have been preparing for the battle, but if their supplies are starting to run out. And most of those NPCs are dead now unfortunately.
@DForck42 Three are 7th level, and two are 6th level.

7:32 PM
@NautArch Well, the enemy soldiers obviously want Potions of Healing for themselve, but didn't have time to drink them. So loot!

7:44 PM
@Adam hmm, they should know better at this point to not just willy nilly spend their spells

That's why I thought it was pretty funny that they blew through most of them on encounter #1 :p
Rather, they blew through all of their high level ones.

@Adam :-/

@GreySage bingo bango bongo
mistakes like that will get you killed

7:59 PM
@NautArch You're so happy in the jungle?

Oh, no-no no-no no!
