Well, I just scrolled through the first 50 game-rec questions and 8 of them were closed/on hold.

Six of the second 50 were closed, though one was as a dupe so I don't think that counts.

Although I guess what I really want to know is more subjective. How many of these produced a good answer, or an answer better than just asking on any forum?

@BESW I have, and taken that into consideration. Much appreciated! It's all being filed under "ponder later". It felt like the idea needed more time to germinate. Doesn't help that I've apparently started writing a novel. Which is something of a surprise.

So that's... 42 of 250, or nearly 17% of game-rec questions asked are currently closed, not counting duplicates.

@AlexP Yeah, every once in a while we mods have a come-to-Jesus moment and realize we're not helping anyone by not being stricter on the rules there. Then we are, and someone has a hissy fit. Then we try to avoid the problem for a while again.

Apparently every game-rec question has at least one answer, which doesn't say a thing about quality but I thought I'd throw it out there.

So, umm, based on the front page, I think most of the good game-rec questions aren't actually "Recommend me a game." They're more like "Recommend me a component for a system I already use."

"Recommend me a game" fails for three reasons.

First, ignorance on the part of the asker: It is almost impossible to know your group well enough to actually ask the question you want to get answered, so you wind up with answers that are good for the question you asked but not the problem you have.

@BESW Did you read that defence of his opening words though?

Second, ignorance on the part of the answerer: We've got a relatively small pool of people to draw answers from, and a lot of our game system experience overlaps, so That 1980s Game That Is Perfect For Your Situation But Never Really Caught On may never have crossed our radars.

@BESW I'm actually OK with it. It tells me it's a dark and stormy night - great, scene set. Then it tells me more about that. Which is what the defence mentioned - it doesn't have to avoid telling me it's a dark and stormy night (or that it's dark, for that matter) just because later information also tells me about the darkness, or the storminess, or the nightyness.

It's come to be a cipher, a symbol for bad writing of a particular kind, rather than being an example of particularly egregious fault itself.

I'd be much more interested in an article on how that happened.

there was a two-story book my parents once bought me. One story was Which Witch? and it was all about a wizard trying to find a wife from a variety of potential suit...ettes(?). It was very boring and the first novel I ever actually decided with my mum (who was reading it to me) to simply stop reading.

Enthusiasm imposes blinders: Frequently we have a system we like so much (or at least feel so committed to) that we will bend it into shape to fit whatever we want it to do whether it was designed for that or not. This leads to recommending systems which we could make fit the OP's needs, but the system by itself does not.

Hence Mxy's regularly-heard complaint that we think Fate and GURPS can do anything.

In some sense they can. If you don't care how it's done.

But they aren't made for it.

I think in general sys-rec runs into this problem. To really nail down a system that someone wants, you need to know a lot of different aspects of their tastes.

That said! Today on RPGnet, someone said "I want to play a game like Hillfolk but it should work for fewer than 4 players" and three of us all said, "Sagas!" and that was that.

@Problematic and I have this idea that Fate can do D&D hack-and-slash better than D&D can, but it's as yet untested. And certainly Fate is inappropriate for optimization play or mix-n'-match character building from prefab components.

(I don't have any intent to belittle such things, I'm just saying that D&D does them better than Fate can. If they're what the group values in the D&D experience, Fate can't pick up that slack however hard DFRPG tries.)

Well, being the Fate-disliking heretic that I am, it's not really a surprise to me that Fate can't be all things to all people.

I don't think it's a bad game but it is soooo NOT FOR ME.

I do my best to keep my Fate enthusiasm in its proper place on the site--if I don't honestly think the system as intended can answer a question, I'll leave it alone and find something else.

No. People asking for techniques should ask for techniques not games. We had refactored rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/7328/… that way but it was too late. People should ask for diceless techniques, character background techniques, etc. - not "games with X."

Huh, that is a great description of the problem with a lot of game-rec.

You should only ask for a game if you intend to run that game in toto.

My main recommendation is to avoid needing to do maps. They complicate the heck out of online play.

There are tools for it and such, but it really does become all about learning and using the tool.

Fate Accelerated Editions is my go-to.

You could run that in one of our rpg.se chat rooms, since we've got d6 capability.

My two suggestions:

1. Dungeon World for D&D-like stuff in more of a story game framework.

We wrote a script to make d6s look like Fudge dice in that room alone, and we have another script for typing indication.

2. If you have a highly variable play group, you might want to check out the "West Marches" style of campaign. Basically whoever's currently around goes on an adventure to reveal more of the world map, which everyone sorta shares.

My two biggest challenges were a) coordinating a large number of players across multiple time zones when I was the only GM, and b) having a lot of players in a PbC was rather chaotic.

@BESW do you have any past or current ongoing sessions I can take look at (for inspiration)?

So the rules themselves are a little different.

RFS is a disgustingly simple ruleset for improvisational games. It requires no prepwork on the part of the GM or the players, and is almost party-game-like.

For those not knowing, vrylokas are basically redhead pale aristocrat almost-vampires. The only similar looking character I've found is Queen Elizabeth, but she isn't particularly good looking (We need a young, good-looking, moderately-busty redhead vampire-looking, spoiled lady in fantasy clothing). @Aaron The problem isn't storage, it's that I am never given this information at any point. I can change my interface to ask the code calling me to supply it, it's not a big deal, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

Hmm... it appears he is accusing children of possessing pornographic material and threatening to arrest them as an officer of the law, but I feel the name offered is unlikely to be an actual name.

@shatterspike1 yeah, it seems unlikely to be a real name...if it is, it might explain some of the behavior though.

This thing from the feeds amuses me: "Everything you know about critical hits is wrong"

I feel that critical hits are having expanded crit range, more stuff on crits, is what keeps melee, specifically non divine and non arcane classes in line with the insane power of magic casters in most D&D editions

I mean, I think it's fair to say that 3.x style crits contribute to "rocket tag." But they're kinda a gimmick to help fighty guys keep up with the preexisting rocket tag.

Crits are also important for that feeling of "something special happened". Especially important for fighter-types where combat mechanics get very monotonous.

My DM bought these crit cards that give special effects for crits.

I dealt a crit with my hammer and it did crushing hand. We changed this as I dealt the final blow to crushing head but it was still cool.

@AvnerShahar-Kashtan They're kind of an awkward patch in that way, though.
