Now if only they could extend that non-mechanic to not having to figure out what the player is supposed to roll in the first place.
"Uh, is the wizard influencing me or overcoming my sense of self?"
"Who cares, just roll d20."

@AlexP [gasp] But... subsystems! Intricacy breeds realism, doncha know.

Q: Why exactly was my answer deleted?

OpaCitiZenThe question I answered is What's a good system for many (6+) players? My answer, deleted by a mod, read: Personally, I'd go for Warhammer Fantasy RP, either the first or the second edition. (I have no experience with the third one, but that might suit you as well.) It's grim, dark ...

Q: Are game recommendation questions on topic?

mxyzplkMany Stack Exchange sites, like the similar gaming.SE, do not allow game recommendation questions (aka shopping questions) because they pose an intractable quality problem. And this is after long, contentious discussion and learning on the topic. Should RPG.SE similarly reject game recommendatio...

@mxyzplk Thanks for your quick and concise replies to the question and my comments. I'll delete my comments now.

Has there been a lot of game-rec lately, or does it just seem that way??

2:55 AM
Sure feels like it.

I'd be curious to get some numbers/examples of good vs. bad game-rec.
Like, using that data-miner tool.

Questions, or answers?

Both.
Questions that end up being closed compared to site average for all kinds of questions.

@BESW np thanks for the help

Deleted answers compared to site average.

2:59 AM
Well, I just scrolled through the first 50 game-rec questions and 8 of them were closed/on hold.
Six of the second 50 were closed, though one was as a dupe so I don't think that counts.

Although I guess what I really want to know is more subjective. How many of these produced a good answer, or an answer better than just asking on any forum?

well, we had a lot of bad old ones necroed lately too

11 of the third 50.
(not counting dupes)
10 of the fourth 50.

@AlexP My contention is "all of them not closed," because asking any of those questions - regardless of what it's asking - on a forum gets you the same people with the same list. "FATE! Risus! GURPS! Derp!"

7 of the fifth 50.

3:02 AM
@mxyzplk I feel that way about some of ours. >.>

@BESW I have, and taken that into consideration. Much appreciated! It's all being filed under "ponder later". It felt like the idea needed more time to germinate. Doesn't help that I've apparently started writing a novel. Which is something of a surprise.

So that's... 42 of 250, or nearly 17% of game-rec questions asked are currently closed, not counting duplicates.

@AlexP Yeah, every once in a while we mods have a come-to-Jesus moment and realize we're not helping anyone by not being stricter on the rules there. Then we are, and someone has a hissy fit. Then we try to avoid the problem for a while again.

@mxyzplk I, for one, welcome our consistently-enforcing-the-rules overlords.

@mxyzplk It's a thankless job! But at least you're not having to moderate "political" discussion.

3:05 AM
Apparently every game-rec question has at least one answer, which doesn't say a thing about quality but I thought I'd throw it out there.

So, umm, based on the front page, I think most of the good game-rec questions aren't actually "Recommend me a game." They're more like "Recommend me a component for a system I already use."

"Recommend me a game" fails for three reasons.
First, ignorance on the part of the asker: It is almost impossible to know your group well enough to actually ask the question you want to get answered, so you wind up with answers that are good for the question you asked but not the problem you have.

@BESW Did you read that defence of his opening words though?

Second, ignorance on the part of the answerer: We've got a relatively small pool of people to draw answers from, and a lot of our game system experience overlaps, so That 1980s Game That Is Perfect For Your Situation But Never Really Caught On may never have crossed our radars.

@BESW Duplicates are or aren't part of the final tally?

3:17 AM
@Metool Aren't.
@JonathanHobbs Hm?

@BESW Regarding the Lytton phrase from yesterday.

Yes, but what defense?

You say it's bad because it repeats information, but that is exactly a criticism the defence responded to.
The one Magician linked.

Oh, that bit. That's not what I'm talking about.
"It was a dark and stormy night" is repeating the information given in the rest of the paragraph.
And in a much less interesting way.
It reads like a thesis statement, not prose.
I think you mean AlexP, though.

Erm, I... posted the link in the first place?

3:22 AM
The defense there is only talking about the first seven words, not the paragraph as a whole, and I find the words out of context to be less objectionable than in context.

Yeah, wasn't me :)

Also I posted the Lyttle Lyttons link.

That is, without the rest of the paragraph saying "It was a dark and stormy night" better, "It was a dark and stormy night" would itself be more acceptable.

Because the regular contest is broken due to bad rules.

@AlexP Oh, sorry. My memory failed me.

3:24 AM
> The men greeted each other, wearing various smiles on their faces.

@BESW I'm actually OK with it. It tells me it's a dark and stormy night - great, scene set. Then it tells me more about that. Which is what the defence mentioned - it doesn't have to avoid telling me it's a dark and stormy night (or that it's dark, for that matter) just because later information also tells me about the darkness, or the storminess, or the nightyness.

Aye. It's not awful.
It's come to be a cipher, a symbol for bad writing of a particular kind, rather than being an example of particularly egregious fault itself.
I'd be much more interested in an article on how that happened.

Well, apparently Bulwer-Lytton was prolific in general.

Why not something from James Fenimore Cooper, for example? He was and still is widely considered a hack.

@BESW Me too.
there was a two-story book my parents once bought me. One story was Which Witch? and it was all about a wizard trying to find a wife from a variety of potential suit...ettes(?). It was very boring and the first novel I ever actually decided with my mum (who was reading it to me) to simply stop reading.
That could be a better candidate. Though that's storytelling more than writing I suppose!

3:31 AM
@BESW You left us hanging on reason #3.

@AlexP I got a handful of other things being said to me and forgot it.
Oh, right.
Enthusiasm imposes blinders: Frequently we have a system we like so much (or at least feel so committed to) that we will bend it into shape to fit whatever we want it to do whether it was designed for that or not. This leads to recommending systems which we could make fit the OP's needs, but the system by itself does not.
Hence Mxy's regularly-heard complaint that we think Fate and GURPS can do anything.

Yeah.
In some sense they can. If you don't care how it's done.

Heh.
But they aren't made for it.

I think in general sys-rec runs into this problem. To really nail down a system that someone wants, you need to know a lot of different aspects of their tastes.
That said! Today on RPGnet, someone said "I want to play a game like Hillfolk but it should work for fewer than 4 players" and three of us all said, "Sagas!" and that was that.

@Problematic and I have this idea that Fate can do D&D hack-and-slash better than D&D can, but it's as yet untested. And certainly Fate is inappropriate for optimization play or mix-n'-match character building from prefab components.
(I don't have any intent to belittle such things, I'm just saying that D&D does them better than Fate can. If they're what the group values in the D&D experience, Fate can't pick up that slack however hard DFRPG tries.)
[pats DFRPG and offers it a cookie] He tries so hard, you know?

3:42 AM
Well, being the Fate-disliking heretic that I am, it's not really a surprise to me that Fate can't be all things to all people.
I don't think it's a bad game but it is soooo NOT FOR ME.

Ayuh.
I do my best to keep my Fate enthusiasm in its proper place on the site--if I don't honestly think the system as intended can answer a question, I'll leave it alone and find something else.
(Like the Realm Guard mod for the LotR game-rec question.)

I looked at my Mouse Guard book recently and I so want to run it now.

You've seen Realm Guard, right?

Yeah.

@AlexP Yeah, but those should be asked differently - "recommend me a component," mainly. A lot of these old sys-recs are bad because they're asking for "games" when they want "techniques"

3:57 AM
@mxyzplk Sorry, I'm kinda confused about the "but" there. (I think they're "game-rec" just because we had that meta thing about how game-rec was gonna refer to module-rec and adventure-rec and splat-rec, for now. Is that what you're referring to also?)

No. People asking for techniques should ask for techniques not games. We had refactored rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/7328/… that way but it was too late. People should ask for diceless techniques, character background techniques, etc. - not "games with X."

Huh, that is a great description of the problem with a lot of game-rec.

You should only ask for a game if you intend to run that game in toto.
2

That or people just asking for a list of games with a technique. Which is not our thing.

rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/22504/… was closed with that same justification.

4:11 AM
This is at 4 close votes and could do with a fifth.

Mine's already in.

@JonathanHobbs Agreed. Done. I think you could've been the fifth, FYI (none of the close votes were yours).

@AlexP I made a vote to close earlier then retracted it, so I couldn't do another VTC and be the fifth

@AvnerShahar-Kashtan Nice try, but don't bother. There's nothing to be found there but hyperbole, misdirection, strawmanning, and alienating people who agree with him because they don't agree in the right way.
Hey, chat, I need a synonym for "beard" that conveys fullness, mass, and body.

@BESW You could describe the particular style.
This has the benefit of being more specific, also.

Mmm. Context is pretty generic.
It's for T2CB, and this is the tweet.
I'm thinking something along the lines of "Tweets to Campaign By reports disastrous news from the Journey to the Center of the Beard."

A mighty chin-covering? :P
Hmm...
So, umm, I guess that depends on how you want to "campaign" it?
I dunno, I'd visualize a particular style of beard.
although I guess most don't have very useful names

Most beard names don't resonate with the public, and things like "Journey to the Centre of the Mutton Chop" are nonsensical.
"Journey to the Centre of the Chin Curtain," perhaps.

7:20 AM
The idea of a noteworthy beard effectively consuming your chin is sort of a common one.

"Chin curtain" is apparently a specific kind of beard, but it's also obvious enough what it means even if you haven't heard it before.
Tweets to Campaign By reports disaster during the Journey to the Center of the Chin Curtain.
We have just heard of the death of Scott Killingsworth, who dropped dead in his beard. MS1908

So, is this originally a typo? Or?

I have no context.
"in his bed" would make sense, except that "dropped dead" is a bit too active for dying recumbent.

And "bed"->"beard" is a bigger-than-average typo.
Mysterious!

[wiggles fingers ominiously] Mysteeeeeriouuuuus.

7:31 AM
Well, about as mysterious as something can be when I can type his name and date of death into my magic box and see a picture of his grave in five seconds flat. WE LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES.
Looks like it's one of those old tiny cemeteries.
Yeah, sigh, still can't figure out anything about his beard-death, though. Oh well.

Yes, but findagrave is only sporadically useful for getting more information.

So, I think I have a bit of an irrational soft spot for Robin Hood stories that hate on King Richard.

I blame Disney.

I blame Walter Scott, I think?
Ditto there was some BBC show (Robin of Sherwood?) that had King Richard come back just to kinda try to tempt the outlaws to abandon their cause with personal favors while not resolving whatever they were supposed to be rebelling against (taxes? Normans?).

One of those rebel-y things.

7:40 AM
He's enchanted by Herne the Hunter. So I guess he is also fighting for quasi-Celtic paganism or something?

Oh, that's always awkward.
One never knows whether to have the hunters killed for trespassing in the royal forest, or invite them to join the Hunt.

No, no, Robin Hood is enchanted by Herne.

...oh. That's just redundant and confusing.

Shrug, it's 80s action-adventure TV from Britain.

"I, an agent of lawlessness and shooting things with pointy sticks, am now the avatar of an agent of lawlessness and shooting things with point sticks!"
@Krazer Hi!

7:46 AM
@BESW good late night to you fellows~

Just about to start making dinner over here. What brings you to our fine and off-topic chat?

Some folks at Arqade.SE are thinking of starting thier own D&D session I thought I should ask you guys for some pointers to get things started. Everything is flexible.

Oh, cool.
What edition?
Ah, I see, that's one of the yet-to-be-determineds.

@BESW That's still open to discussion. Some of the prospective players are new while other have a few notches on their belts. I though I'd ask you guys hereto see what you recommend.

An app like roll20.net is commonly used for the online interface.
Does it have to be D&D, or is "D&D" being used euphemistically to refer to tabletop RPGs as a group?

7:51 AM
@BESW I think the latter. I'd personally be open to other PnP Fate-likes

My main recommendation is to avoid needing to do maps. They complicate the heck out of online play.
There are tools for it and such, but it really does become all about learning and using the tool.

Fate Accelerated Editions is my go-to.
You could run that in one of our rpg.se chat rooms, since we've got d6 capability.
4d6

I've run FAE games in the Fate game room:

 Fate chat and game room

Good questions raised here should hit the main site too! Fudge...

@BESW definitely open to that.

7:55 AM
You can find our play sessions in the conversations tab.

My two suggestions:
1. Dungeon World for D&D-like stuff in more of a story game framework.

We wrote a script to make d6s look like Fudge dice in that room alone, and we have another script for typing indication.

2. If you have a highly variable play group, you might want to check out the "West Marches" style of campaign. Basically whoever's currently around goes on an adventure to reveal more of the world map, which everyone sorta shares.

@AlexP Thanks I'll take a look.

I'm gonna run off to sleep now. Good night!

7:58 AM
My two biggest challenges were a) coordinating a large number of players across multiple time zones when I was the only GM, and b) having a lot of players in a PbC was rather chaotic.

@BESW do you have any past or current ongoing sessions I can take look at (for inspiration)?

@Krazer You can find our play sessions in the conversations tab.
Keep in mind that they're mostly using the pre-publication beta version of FAE from the Kickstarter.
So the rules themselves are a little different.

@BESW I don't think time zone will be too much of an issue. I'm willing to take the burden of GMing, do you know of any resources I can take a look at to get better acquainted with the role?

We also have a Discourse forum for the campaign.
@Krazer That's going to depend a lot on what system you ultimately choose.
Different RPGs approach the GM/player relationship to the story differently.

@BESW What do you recommend as a lead-in for newer players?

8:03 AM
I frequently suggest the Same Page Tool for a group to get an idea of what kind of game experience they want.

Okay, I'll take a look. Thanks. I'm sure I'll be back with questions.

You might even want to just try (Rules found here).
RFS is a disgustingly simple ruleset for improvisational games. It requires no prepwork on the part of the GM or the players, and is almost party-game-like.
One moment, let me see if I can find the play sessions.
This is a frozen room with some RFS in it:
And this is another RFS game.

I see. This is wonderful thanks.

I'm bookmarking our conversation and linking it in the Arqade meta post.

Alright. I was going to repost most of it anyway.

8:12 AM
We just had a conversation on this topic in the RPG General Chat. — BESW 32 secs ago
I'm afraid I won't be monitoring that meta post much, though. Arqade's pinstripe background image synchs with my monitor refresh rate, making it flicker like a dying florescent bulb.

@BESW I'll be sure to keep you in the loop, when I can.

Much obliged. Happy to help however I can.

8:49 AM
@BESW Depending on your browser, you can disable background images/colors. (Including just for specific websites)

That sounds lovely. I'll look into it.

9:03 AM
@BESW cdn.sstatic.net/gamingmeta/img/bg-body.png is the bg image you are looking to target. You can make a simple userscript that hides/replaces the style attribute and that should take care of your sync flicker.

Or I'll ask someone else to do that for me; I'm in print media, not programming. Even the simplest of coding is Dark Magic to me.
But yes, thanks, the bg file link is very useful.

@BESW you can always adblock that image, too.

@BESW I've contemplated making that script active in all of stack exchange's chat rooms, but having it enabled by default only in the Fate one

@JonathanHobbs Like, including a toggle switch per chat room or something?

@BESW Yeah, that escalated very quickly, didn't it?

9:08 AM
@BESW Yes. [ACTIVATIFY THE DICEOMANCERY]

I've had minor run-ins with him before on some issues, but I always give it a try anyway.

Ouch, what happened?

@JonathanHobbs Eh, another chat room discussion.
Arguing the argument you can win instead of the one everyone else is having.

Oh dear. :(

Although I have to say that the quick pivot to cold war paranoia and hatred of fellow travelers kinda took me by surprise.

9:14 AM
...yes.
Sometimes I wish I could employ a Same Page Tool for chat topics.
3

@BESW Now that is a brilliant idea.... If only people would actually care

Aye, there's the rub,
For in that Same Page Tool, what trolls may come,
When we have shrugged off this bickering,
Must give us pause.
(My apologies for the meter.)

@BESW your apology is refused, that was beautiful
(you did screw up the meter but I don't care xD)

I found this tab open in my browser and I'm trying to remember how I got to it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernoulli_process

Randomly. Obviously.

9:27 AM
I don't even know what stochastic means.
Ok, now I kind of do.

9:53 AM
there is something in this screenshot that delights me
(and it caught me by surprise too - I forgot area 51 had them)

They're everywhere.
Badgering their way into every nook and cranny.

the badgering is nigh
hide yourselves the badgering is coming

10:11 AM
Hullo.

@Sven Hi!

2 hours later…
11:50 AM
Hello chat. I think I need your geekery and movie knowledge again.
My group and me, we're looking for an avatar for a D&D 4e vryloka female sorceress.
For those not knowing, vrylokas are basically redhead pale aristocrat almost-vampires. The only similar looking character I've found is Queen Elizabeth, but she isn't particularly good looking (We need a young, good-looking, moderately-busty redhead vampire-looking, spoiled lady in fantasy clothing). Anybody knows of a similar character in any franchise?
Ah. No full vampire fangs. That has been a huge problem to me while googling images.

Franchise only?
Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed (Báthory Erzsébet in Hungarian, Alžbeta Bátoriová in Slovak; 7 August 1560 – 21 August 1614) was a countess from the renowned Báthory family of nobility in the Kingdom of Hungary. She has been labelled the most prolific female serial killer in history and is remembered as the "Blood Countess," though the precise number of victims is debated. Her story results mainly from those who accused her and was apparently recorded more than 100 years after her death. It quickly became part of national folklore. After her husband Ferenc Nádasdy's death, she an...

@BESW not necessarily. One of the big noes with screenshots from Elizabeth - the golden age were the hair.

Mary, Queen of Scots (8 December 1542 – 8 February 1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, was queen regnant of Scotland from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567 and queen consort of France from 10 July 1559 to 5 December 1560. Mary, the only surviving legitimate child of King James V of Scotland, was 6 days old when her father died and she acceded to the throne. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558, she married the Dauphin of France, Francis. He ascended the French throne as King Francis II in 1559, and Mary briefly...

So I don't think any historically accurate portrait from that age will do - but let's see them.

Do image searches on these people and see what you find.
What was wrong with Queen Liz's hair?

11:54 AM

@Zachiel Hotlink.

Nope.
How about Darla from Buffy and Angel?

Might need some photoshop to turn her into a redhead

That's not too hard.

11:58 AM
If I really need to do that I think I'm going to use this image instead. fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/…

At least there are images available for such a character
I gave up trying to find an image of a fang dragon (medium sized) in a full plate using claw blades ;P (and I sadly can't draw myself)

I think complicated hairstyle is somehow a turn-off for me and my friend
The one woman at our table suggested this pic. fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/…

her idea was too fangy, but I think you get the idea of the tropes of the character

Try image searches for victorian era redhead or elizabethan era redhead.
You'll get a lot of junk, but probably some decent possibilities too.

12:04 PM
I tried gothic redhead, vampire redhead... I also tried ginger and I tried google, dA, safegirlbooru, hell yeah monster girls..., one more search won't kill me. After lunch. See ya.

Cosplay and costume searches can also be good.

12:46 PM
Here I am again. I've tought at it while the laptop was getting ready and I think I can nail why I was looking for movies or tv-serials. I'd like something on the style of game of thrones, dress- and hair-wise. Unfortunately, Ygritte is too innocent-looking.

try variants on dracula wife and dracula bride.
("Wife" is more likely than "bride," as the Brides of Dracula usually aren't wearing much.)

A search on "Aleera" will yield you a lot of (often disturbing) redhead vampire images.

Yeah, I found about Aleera from some van helsing screenshots, but she's not the kind of face we vere looking for. Marishka and Verona are both better, but wrong hair.

1:05 PM
all the images
good morning

hello
Every actress looks ugly to me today.
Better go looking for redheads in Luis Rojo's work.
Mmmmh, Satine from Moulin Rouge. Could work.

just grab something like adam hughes' black widow

I just need to find some good "I'm important, I'm better than you and I'm in ******* control" face

Can't go wrong with SLJ.

lol looking at redhead felicia day comes up
have looked at any MTG art?

1:12 PM
Of course she would. She's the queen of the internet.

@Kethryweryn Oh, looking for a female?

@InbarRose I'm not. But Zachiel is. Read a bit further, before all the image spamming starts.

maybe some old school ann margret headshots

ripley

also rita hayworth
christina hendricks as joan making a bamf face

1:16 PM

Gmorning

@Aaron Hi!

ooooooo - From "voice actors dressed as their characters"

theres probably some renegade femshep fan art out there that would fit teh bill

@InbarRose That looks like Ellen DeGenerous

1:19 PM
@Aaron Jeez, you are right. Somehow that makes it better.

I thought that was who it was until I read what you said above the pic

I was not commenting on the photo
gun is way too big to be a mass effect weapon (barring 1 or 2 exceptions)

... I bet that is ellen
Google here I come
What is the costume from?

it could be mass effect, I just think its bad cosplay

The image url says it's the military character from the space marines game in Wreck-It Ralph.

1:24 PM
Oooh I know who that is then. She is also in Role Models

1:37 PM
Femshepard is hot. But she's in the wrong dress and is not sultry enough. Right now I'm browsing Pinterest, sorry if I don't reply you
I think I found one.
She has her hair in one of those elaborate shapes I despised before, but at least they look like they've been recently washed.

@Zachiel How unrealistic!
[grin]

The funny thing is that I had that photo as my the Burning Wheel character avatar.
It didn't stick to me she was a redhead.

1 hour later…
2:58 PM
At this point, I think I'm posting questions in SO with the express purpose of getting the Tumbleweed badge.

its one of those days where I just wanna play D&D on the internet
(work is very dead)

It's one of those days where work is relatively dead, but I still won't run the searches for all those pictures @Zachiel mentioned. :)

lol
@besw yes, yes yes yes same page for some chat conversations

3:24 PM
@AvnerShahar-Kashtan SO is the main stack exchange right?

@Aaron Yeah. I'm working with a less-than-mainstream technology now, which means I get an awful lot of silence on my questions.

@AvnerShahar-Kashtan By mainstream you mean a new tech that most don't know yet?

@Aaron Nah, just a niche.

@AvnerShahar-Kashtan Oh. What was your question maybe I can throw random advice at you untill something clicks

Q: Retrieving current user's UserId object

Avner Shahar-KashtanI'm writing some code that does administrative tasks on an Exchange server, and I need to set a folder's permissions, giving myself (that is, the mailbox/user that is connected to Exchange) permissions on a given folder. The code for this is along these lines: UserId userId = ???; myFolder.Perm...

3:28 PM
@AvnerShahar-Kashtan Does the program have any form of session so it keeps the id of the user somewhere you can pull it from? That is about the only experience I have on something like that.

@Aaron The problem isn't storage, it's that I am never given this information at any point. I can change my interface to ask the code calling me to supply it, it's not a big deal, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

@AvnerShahar-Kashtan Ah. Sorry I couldn't help.

No worries. Thanks for trying. :)

It has been awhile sense I have had a chance to dive into code. I miss developing.

Well, doing it professionally is a good way to stop missing it. :)
I kid, I kid. I still enjoy coding, even if I don't enjoy some other aspects of the job.

3:35 PM
Same here. Developing is fun. All the fuss around it, not so much.

I work in sharepoint support.

Sometimes I wish there was a way for the community to choose best answer to a question that has languished

I worked as a Sharepoint developer for quite a while.
Do not wish to touch it ever again. :)
@JoshuaAslanSmith That came up on SciFi.SE meta a couple of times.

Q: Is it desirable to have the community award "acceptance" to answers on abandoned questions?

DVKThere are many questions like this one: Identifying a story about a girl named Sarah who finds out she is a robot The pattern is the same: User (usually new one) asks a question. Often, it's their only question no the site Someone produces an unequivocally correct answer. "Correct" as evi...

Sorry, I'm not sure how to direct link answers

Three languages that never should have been: Swaganees, Moronic, and Hypocritic.

Hmm... it appears he is accusing children of possessing pornographic material and threatening to arrest them as an officer of the law, but I feel the name offered is unlikely to be an actual name.

@shatterspike1 yeah, it seems unlikely to be a real name...if it is, it might explain some of the behavior though.

Now I'm wondering if it's even possible to give a kid that name legally

Hey folks. Can I ask a quick Meta question?

@shatterspike1 There is a kid named la-a or something legally and it is pronounced ladasha

4:35 PM
Actually, my daughter is friends with a Ladasha who spells it like that...

"The dash don't be silent"

I would have called her La hyphen a
Cause that is not a dash it's a hyphen

Could be La–a

If someone asks a question that gets closed or put on hold or some such, and I have info that might be of use to them, is there an acceptable mechanism to get that to them? I feel odd editing or commenting into a closed question.
There's no personal messaging or email connected to these sites, right?

Outside of making a private room between two people? I don't think so.

OK, Thx.

I get the feeling none of the diamond mods are online, given that that answer is still there

This thing from the feeds amuses me: "Everything you know about critical hits is wrong"

I feel that critical hits are having expanded crit range, more stuff on crits, is what keeps melee, specifically non divine and non arcane classes in line with the insane power of magic casters in most D&D editions

@JoshuaAslanSmith Most editions?

less important to 4th
and anyone can get access to crit shinangins via paragon paths, especially multiclassing to gain access to a specific pp

I mean, I think it's fair to say that 3.x style crits contribute to "rocket tag." But they're kinda a gimmick to help fighty guys keep up with the preexisting rocket tag.

6:25 PM
yep

6:56 PM
Crits are also important for that feeling of "something special happened". Especially important for fighter-types where combat mechanics get very monotonous.

My DM bought these crit cards that give special effects for crits.
I dealt a crit with my hammer and it did crushing hand. We changed this as I dealt the final blow to crushing head but it was still cool.

@AvnerShahar-Kashtan They're kind of an awkward patch in that way, though.

Yeah, but a well-established one.
