All the components for my brother's computer are here. As well as my new graphics card and monitor. :) Now I only need to order the Core i5 when it drops after Haswell comes out

@BenRichards you really think prices will drop that much after Haswell comes out? I think with the state of the economy and everything, prices are going to hang firm :(

prices on Ivy are already slightly decreased from what they were when it launched, but I can't see them going much lower until months after Haswell is out

Yeah mine is fine. I only upgraded my graphics card to get four mini-DP outputs. I need 3 to do what I want. Only have 2 atm.

I have Ivy Bridge in my Sony. Works just fine.

But battery, yeah.

"just fine"; but it'd be awesome to get 10 hours of battery life instead of 5 in my 'Pro, and the capability to play high end 3d games on low detail at solid 60 fps (currently getting about 45 in Unreal Engine 3 games)

I can do gaming but I don't. I have a computer for that. But it has to be set on low. :P Also, I get around 8-9 hrs with the extended battery. I can pop it on when necessary. That's why I got it.

While it's a bit heavier, it's manageable.

But yeah, of course if Haswell was out, I'd go for that instead :P

@JourneymanGeek Java for desktop is perfectly fine. I like Java for desktop programming, actually. It's really nice, there. Also, Vuze is the best bittorrent client and is Java. :P

I wanted to have something for me to use on vacation in June. I guess next year (hopefully) I'll have a Haswell ultrabook... probably will sell my Surface Pro to recoup some cash to put towards a Haswell ultrabook

then again, Microsoft's hardware division seems to move at a snail's pace

I got nervous briefly. Was working outside in the sun and for kicks opened the Camera app. The front facing camera was freaking out with artifacts. But going inside it was fine. I guess it could deal with all that sunlight. :P

I'd be stunned if Surface Pro 2 is out before Q3 2014

@allquixotic Yeah, we'll see. At least the hardware is quality. For a software company, they make good hardware. :P

If only Sony made good software, now. :P

@BenRichards I remember seeing "Microsoft Hardware" used like a company name at the top of the old red background website for their mouse/keyboard products

@BenRichards it is definitely a subdivision but it operates like a separate company, more or less.... which it won't if hardware is going to become a primary profit center for Microsoft, since Microsoft Corporate HQ will start to put a lot more eyes into Hardware and get it "streamlined"

Apple does the same thing, they have hardware and software, but the hardware division of Apple has always been the primary thing that Steve Jobs (and now Tim Cook) paid the most attention to

Yeah. That's why they partnered up at the outset. Microsoft provided them with software and they did the hardware.

IIRC, Microsoft even helped build Mac OS back then.

@BenRichards I like their horizontal scrollie thing that scrolls when you scroll

@OliverSalzburg Yeah that's really handy. I also noticed that if you just keep moving the mouse past the edge of the screen, it scrolls the start screen.

Though I don't use that as much.

wow

today i fixed a problem that has been dogging my every step for a year

i figured out that cntlm hangs when its stdout/stderr buffer fills up, which is why i had to keep restarting cntlm every once in a while

so i used cmd.exe facilities to redirect stderr to stdout, then stdout to NUL (equivalent of /dev/null)

it freaking works O_O

@tapped-out I have that occasionally. The actual problem being a Chrome process that didn't die properly

So when you open Chrome again, it's actually just a new window

Then I have to kill all processes manually, start Chrome and it'll be like "Your last session crashed OMG"
