@Ariane they were just suggestions. perhaps they helped you to find the answer then you can post the answer. or if you don't find a good answer then don't post it. If my suggestions were as good as the answer, then you didn't find a good answer!

@barlop: I donno about @Ariane but you sure did confuse me ;p

@JourneymanGeek (in so far as I believe in having pride ) i'm proud of that(confusing you), it's an accomplishment

it's an accomplishment to confuse @JourneymanGeek?

yeah he's a clever guy

9:03 AM

TIL @JourneymanGeek is a dog.

@Leathe: its one of the (not quite so many) memes of superuser ;p

nah. you're a dog.

@Ariane You are very easily impressed(plus 1ing that answer that told you a basic option you should have already known, and that shows things funny). But I suggest you follow my suggestions, which in themselves don't answer it in that they won't get you the answer straight away, but they may lead you to a good answer.
@Ariane so far you don't have a good answer and personally I would not have voted that answer. I hope you don't say "oh i haven't had an answer for 3 months i'll accept that one". Personally I wouldn't accept a rubbish answer. My suggestions in themselves if you read them as an answer, are rubbish. You are too easily impressed.

9:11 AM
It needs to be next week sooner ><

@barlop what question are you refering to?

XD, I was wondering that too

OH which reminds me
@Ariane: I totally forgot what the question I offered to bounty was. If you still want me to, let me know

Hmm. Can't you just go to Control Panel -> Display and increase the percentage in the "Make it easier to read what's on your screen"?
oh wait, that was the first answer. nevermind

9:20 AM
lol
I think I may give it a crack

you can make a custom DPI though

but nope, dosen't work as I think @Ariane wants
or dump winscp, and switch to cyberduck ;p

:P
but if you put the DPI to something like 110% instead of 125%
maybe it doesn't screw it up as much

here's a fun one

Q: Do you believe that one cannot tell the difference between 120hz and 60hz displays?

DARMOKANI read your dismissive comment on this page: What is the point to 120Hz in 2D mode? I actually hate to inform you that you are incorrect. I can verifiably discern 120hz from 60hz, as can most humans. I wonder, where did you chance upon this false affirmation? Yes, films are commonly shown at ...

f me sideways

Bob
9:27 AM
huh
@JourneymanGeek something happen?

@soandos dafuuuuuu...

I learnt something new by accident ;p

someone's raging

Bob
@soandos -___-

Im just pointing it out so we can all vtc. Plus, I honestly don't get the last paragraph

9:29 AM
I flagged it as "doesn't belong in this community"
or actually it says "not welcome in our community"
Ï just want to comment with "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE"

@JourneymanGeek is the policy to edit out the profanity or leave it in?

I don't think it's necessary to edit anything in that post. It's going down.

I mean in general

@soandos: I usually do that myself

Does anyone know where is the info about the andriod device stored ?

9:33 AM
oh, that last paragraph is a quote from the comment he's talking about

I mean the name of the chipset and stuff

@HackToHell: settings, about, hardware information I think

No I mean the actual file from where the settings app reads stuff
My manufacturer has pulled a lame( yet effective) trick to prevent rooting by leaving the chipset name blank causing the flashing tool to fail :'(

lol
superuser.com/a/601585/10165 anyone wants some flags?
sad thing is, I've heard of the company, they do cheap, slightly better than total crapgadget tablets

hahaha @soandos "baloney" :D

9:39 AM
@Leathe nice touch no?

yeah :D

@soandos: oh, THAT kinda profanity
I thought you meant me ;p

nope

hmm /proc/cpuinfo shows the correct info

wait, what did that lion video have anything to do with his rant?

9:42 AM
I didn't even see the video ;p
@soandos: flag as offensive, don't bother to edit

got it

@JourneymanGeek, he shouldn't provide an answer to his question, since the question is asking for a specific persons personal opinion
it simply doesn't belong in superuser and should be removed/closed

@Leathe: if he could objectively state that 120hz in 2d has a practical purpose, with citations and sources to back him up, he could
I know he won't tho ;p

lol, running top from andriod is really funny :D

it doesn't feel right. he's asking the question though. he's basically ranting over something that was posted over a year ago
and also, I disagree with him :I
oh well. I'm gonna go get lunch now before I can't help myself and post a comment there

9:53 AM
lol

10:09 AM
Ugh, if you upload an updated addon to addons.mozilla.org, you lose your review queue position
Dropped from 13 to 100

ouch

I uploaded the original version 15 days ago, in that time, it climbed from position 65 to 13. Just for a time reference :P
Pretty interesting, both Mozilla and Opera review every single addon and update thereof
Google does no such thing

ffff even the Bin4ry root is fixed in my phone
hell even google glass has that vuln :'(

Q: superuser.com layout bug: divs overlapping & comments not working

BenubirdThere are several problems with the layout. Right sidebar is overlapping slightly; share/edit/delete/flag links are pushed to the side; and when I click on "add comment", the add comment link disappears, but the box to add a comment with does not show. Running firefox 21.0; I think these problem...

10:43 AM
@OliverSalzburg o.o no

anyone on FF can repro this?

I posted it as a comment

@Sathya ;D
@Sathya Nope, everything is fine

Bob
@Sathya fine here

@Sathya nope. no overlapping for me

I feel kinda bad about voiding my warranty !_!

Bob
@HackToHell In what way?

:9668539I flashed a custom Recovery environment

was there a lot of time left on the warranty?

Bob
@HackToHell ...that voids your warranty? o.O

10:58 AM
@Leathe I got the phone yesterday

Bob
Normally, the warranty only applies to hardware...

ah :P

@Bob No mods :|

Bob
OH it's a phone

I just read it

10:59 AM
@HackToHell just don't break it :P

I'll try my best :P
I tend to break everything :P

Then might've not been the best choice ;P

Does anyone remember the site with all the "you want this" type of items?
It was here on chat a long while ago, with for instance the car elevator...

I know what you're talking about but not remembering the name :/

Went through 40 pages of http mentions from myself, should have just asked instead; thanks. :D

Was just a wild guess :D

nhinkle on May 30, 2013

‘Tis the season: as family and friends head off to college, the requests for laptop recommendations start rolling in. It’s a semi-annual tradition for me to blog about my recommendations, so let’s get started! If you haven’t seen my 3 part series on “choosing a computer for college”, check those posts out for some good background info that’s mostly still relevant:

Computers and College Part I: How do I choose?

Computers and College Part II: Saving Money

Computers and College Part III: Protecting Your Computer …

Bob
:(
wish @nhinkle wrote that before i got my laptop :P
it does look great :D
(I did end up getting a HP, but it's working out reasonaby well.. damn Beats to hell.)
Honestly, though, we've had more issues with Dell.

1:22 PM
@Bob Haswell devices will come much later than the CPUs themselves. and usually desktop procs launch first, and laptop procs come much later
honestly I would be stunned to see even a cheapo rushed-to-market laptop of ANY kind with Haswell in 2013
Intel is moving really slow these days.

1:42 PM

> 27.1 W [≈ approximate power consumption of the human brain]
love that dictionary of numbers
my brain consumes about the same amount of energy as an Intel 5500 PCH

is it per hour?

@jokerdino No. When you say that the "power consumption is X Watts", you are saying that it uses X Joules of energy per second.
where Joules are an absolute measurement of energy itself and Watts are an expression of Joules per second
so if an average human brain consumes 20 Joules per second and an Intel 5500 PCH consumes 27 Joules per second, they're pretty comparable :D
except your brain doesn't have a massive heatsink / fan
the energy comes from oxygen and glucose instead of electricity but it's still (eventually) kinetic energy

1:48 PM
lol
the brain does have a network of blood vessels moving blood out
its liquid cooled!

@allquixotic yeah. looks like brain has a better heat management than my stupid laptop

2:09 PM
@jokerdino and better battery life :D
about 16 - 20 hours if you stretch it

meh gerd. human body is a genius

now I wish the brain had a sleep or turn off button.

I can help you turn it off.

not my brain ;P
and good to know we have an assassin in our midst.

^_^

2:12 PM

2:38 PM
@Leathe: worse

@JourneymanGeek hm?

that punishment room in the show hyperdrive!
we put you in a room and show you kittens until your brain goes to mush

punishment room? I'm confused :I

lol
you need to see it to understand
and I have trouble finding references to it online ><

what was that "worse" a reply to, though?

2:44 PM
@Leathe Yeah

being put in a room and shown kittens until your brain turns to much?
oh, turning off your brain
unrelatedly (can anything be related to KILL THE HUMANS?)

Q: Meaning of parameters in classic 'LOAD "*",8,1' Commodore command

MPelletierIn the good old days of Commodore (64 and 128), the command to type to load the first program off a disk was: LOAD "*",8,1 Where I take it that "*" was probably a wild card that would just effectively give all the contents of the disk to LOAD which would then successfully load whatever happene...

Q: attached domain name own pc

CorbeeI'm interested buying a domain name then installing it into my linux PC, but I couldn't find resources on how to do it. So far as I search, terms such as BIND, dyndns came up, but I don't understand them. What are the things I need to know to make this possible? Where do I start?

voted to close, commentified an answer-like-comment

Bob
3:00 PM
@Tanner Hey, you can install domain names on Linux now? Wow, that OS can do everything! :D

@allquixotic Please tell me your place of employment doesn't attempt to remove viruses to avoid licensing issues o_o

@Bob TIL

Heh, that reminds me of things like open#1,8,15,"N0:wibble" ; close #15

oh noes. the powerstrip is giving off too much power
I think some serious electrical clue is missing.

Bob
3:06 PM
@Hennes Eh. "power supply go bad because of ... too much power" kinda makes sense.
If he means a surge, overly high voltage, etc..
...
Bluetooth headset:
> With this headset, you will be far away from radiation

It does? I plug a power strip into the wall, (power from that is fine), and then there is much more power coming out of the strip. Free power (voltage) gain ?

Bob
Uhhhhh
@Hennes Oh, i kinda read the last two sentences out of context.

@Hennes: eh, there's a LOT wrong there then

Maybe I wrongly understood it, but for me a power strip is just an extension cord with a few extra sockets.

@Hennes: yup
tho, maybe a short somewhere?

3:09 PM
No magic, no electronics, no conversion, filtering... and not much that can go wrong.
Yeah, it can have a short. But that would short circuit the power. Not cause too much power

Bob
> Not suitable for phones with iOS or Android.
Uh.. ok?
o.O

@JourneymanGeek do you think asking a question like the following would be on-topic?
> Do I need anti-virus software if I'm careful about where I browse?

@KronoS: personally, not really
you're attempting to justify a personal preference, and its likely to spark extended discussion

i think it's a question for the chat

Heh. I think you do not need anti virus.
But you do not a good firewall
And common sense.
.... for everybody who uses that computer .....

3:12 PM
@Hennes: the problem here is, really, its a leading question

Yup. No good single answer to it

by asking it, you already expect that you should be able to run sans AV

The only thing an anti-virus is good for is to tell you that you're already hosed.

lol
I've had pretty good luck with mine

@JourneymanGeek What do you use?

3:13 PM
MSSE/Defender

Meh, it depends on the anti virus. But some programs claim to the AV while trying to do a 1000 things.

we occationally print stuff outside, their systems are gnarly

What sparked this question is that I had a friend say this:
> I don't use Anti-Virus software at all, I am just careful about where I go and what I click on.

AV caught stuff once, now, I insist we use a seperate USB drive, and format it after every time this happesn

I was shocked that anyone would have this mentality

3:14 PM
@KronoS: how does he know he dosen't have a virus?
if he ran limited user, he might get away with it

@KronoS i dont use AV though.

@KronoS That's not always up to your control... Java is rife with zero day exploits and major sites do get hacked...

To me, that state is comparable to "I don't wear a seatbelt at all. I'm just careful about how fast I go, and where I drive"

Watching what you click alone won't do it. You'd have to run around the web with everything disabled.

I have run for months without anti virus.... But with only visiting a few sites. And no external media. And plugins such as PolictyControl to see what a webpage was doing.

Bob
3:16 PM
@Tanner That's why I don't have Java installed.

@Tanner using the same analogy you can't prevent every car accident, but you can be protected from the brunt of it

Bob
And I refuse to do so.

@Bob internal sites require it yadda yadda can't get away from it always :(

I need java for my remote console (DRAC) and for a few locql programs. But I do not need it enabled in my webbrowser

Bob
@Tanner Sorry, best I can do is a VM :P

3:17 PM
@KronoS: closer to "I sit on top of my car and drive it using my suspenders...

@KronoS I've heard that argument too. >_<

Bob
Currently on Win8 with the default stuff, which works well enough.

embarassingly, I mainly have java installed for minecraft
3

Bob
Norton is a piece of shit.

@JourneymanGeek starring your shame.

Bob
3:18 PM
It's deleted freshly-compiled programs which I just wrote before.

@Bob Win 8 comes with anti-virus working in the background
I believe it's a derivative of MSE

Bob
@KronoS Hence "default stuff".

Bob
I forgot what it was called.

@KronoS: it IS msse
defender

Bob
3:18 PM
I think they named it Defender again.
Yep, "Windows Defender".

its just designed to gracefully get out of the way if you install something else

I like MSE/Defender. I don't figure it's going to really protect me, but it's good and yelling when something nasty gets on my PC.

@Bob: I've refused to use norton after a trial copy hosed my system
@Tanner: only time MSSE/Defender got in my way was the time I was trying to create an eicar file to see if I could get a virus past gmail's filters ;p
hm

@JourneymanGeek Yes.

IRL I love problems like this
the advantage of being closer to an old school electrician/EE than a programmer

3:34 PM
Is anyone aware of a web application where you can create control points for a spline and have the resulting data exported?
I really don't want to write my own right now
Like, I'm working on a particle engine, but there is no UI to control particle movement. And I just want to drop the data in there

Q: Do I really need an Anti-Virus software if I'm careful about where I browse?

KronoSA friend told to me the following: I don't use Anti-Virus software at all, I am just careful about where I go and what I click on. I've also heard this from other people as I've repaired their PC's and cleaned up the malware/viruses they've received from browsing to the "wrong" sites. Fina...

alright... here goes

@KronoS Screen Savers?! XP? That's from like forever ago, where Windows OSes were insecure out of the box because they listened on exposed ports with vulnerable services
if you have an operating system, such as modern Windows, that listens on exactly zero inbound ports, then nothing (and I mean nothing) can compromise the box if you don't actively go out on the internet and actively navigate somewhere
however, even navigating to legitimate, known good websites can be a risk, because things like Stored XSS and CSRF can steal your data or make requests on your behalf, etc. which is really where the new and active front of computer security is -- web based attacks
"I have a virus on my computer" is a thing of the past, more or less -- the forefront today is "somebody stole my password" or "somebody stole my credit card number" or "somebody made a purchase on my behalf and had it shipped to their address"
(none of which require any attack code running on your system)

@allquixotic That's only because when people catch a rootkit today, they don't notice it while it works in the background :P

@allquixotic the other thing that I don't think people are aware about, is DDOS attacks are carried out, by regular joe computers that have been compromised

@OliverSalzburg: happened to me

3:43 PM
they would have no idea that their PC is even being used

So what about that spline editor? ;D

caught it by accident cause they fucked up and had a process running in a directory that was invisible yet listed in task manager

3:56 PM
@JourneymanGeek What else can it be used for?

;p
protege in my case

Which reminds me of a thing I wanted to code!

amazing software. I could run it on a supercomputer, and it would STILL grind to a halt

ooooooy ya ya ya.... ya ya ya, ya YA ya, ya ya. dududududu dududu dududu...

@OliverSalzburg WANT

It works with everything :D

4:50 PM
@OliverSalzburg did you get it reviewed by Mozilla already?
or was that a different addon?

@Leathe lol, no

so that was something different then? :b

@Leathe It's the same addon, but it can be used without being reviewed by them ;D

aah

It's cross-browser anyway. I use/develop it in Chrome
Just added another small feature as well. Still working on the one shown in the screenshots above

4:54 PM
I see

Should have cleaned it up a little before committing :P

:P
nah. the // suits in well.

@OliverSalzburg //I have no idea why this works is the best.

Well, at first I just wanted to add the highlight style. But then I realized it would be much more awesome to mark the clicked message with the script internal marker

5:08 PM
holy hell .io tlds cost $100? somebody's making a killing...

@Tanner Get .im, they're much cheaper :P

@Tanner Hey man, I/O isn't cheap. You have to rent out the Moscone Center in San Francisco for that, which is the BMW of convention centers.
I've been there. It is lush. And huge.
It's also a bit confusing. I was in my late teens or maybe 20 when I was there. You don't hold a convention at Moscone without HNW.

5:39 PM
Neat
And if it's a reply to one of your own messages, it now even gets the colors right \o/

@OliverSalzburg awesome :D

Timestamp not always included ;P

@OliverSalzburg chrome push --all ? :(

@allquixotic Just pushed to GitHub
Or maybe I didn't...
> FATAL ERROR: Network error: Connection timed out
@allquixotic Alright, should be live any minute now
Still needs work, but it's a start
There's also a little change when you click the "link my next chat message as a reply to this" arrow now
As in, that message is now highlighted (the feature the extension was initially created for ;D) and you can then move the reply (with up/down arrow) relative to that message
Yay
And it fully works with chat dark theme and the alternative timestamps extension \o/
Alright... what was I originally doing...

6:03 PM
@OliverSalzburg awesome, love it :)
works with Opera Next, too :D

6:24 PM
@OliverSalzburg wow nice.

@JourneymanGeek It was the question about left-aligning titles on Windows 8.

6:48 PM
i havent tried Windows 8 yet.
