1:39 AM
@Tanner @kronos meta.superuser.com/questions/6822/… thanks for making my point for me XD

2:33 AM
hm, blah

Hey! I actually fell asleep. And I've just woken up an hour ago. At the time I'd normally go to bed.

oops ? ;p

Hehe. Well, I'd been working day and night on that &&$% project for days. I was really, really tired.
@barlop You know, your suggestions on my window enlargement question were just as good as the "answer". You should've tried an answer; would've made less of a mess in comments to answer everyone. oo'
Say, if a question by someone else has had no attention for 4 months and I'm really interested in having an answer, what's the best (or rather, acceptable) course of action to heighten my chances of getting an answer?

2:53 AM
^^^ Survival with a smart phone

@Luke Interesting, but how do you dismantle the phone without a screwdriver?

@Ariane: in many cases how do you dismantle a phone with a screwdriver ;p

@JourneymanGeek Don't buy an iPhone?

@JourneymanGeek That only matters if it's an Android; Apple phones are used to being disassembled without screwdrivers

@Ariane: or get a damned nokia 3310 ;p. You can probably bash to death large animals with it.

3:02 AM
@Luke Really? Apple is so protective about not letting people open their stuff... and just so crappy overall I have trouble believing it's actually easier to open than something else. Where's the trap? Will something explode?

/me facedesks a few times

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, no, actual recent phones people have a chance of actuall ystill be using. :p

@Ariane I'm hinting to just break the iPhone

"you need to open the database with sqlite3.exe filename.db" "that means I can't work on another file right? and why the exe, it works anyway"

@Luke But the mirror screen?

3:03 AM
of course dad dosen't get why you need to capitalise database commands.

@JourneymanGeek I don't either.

You don't need a large screen to make the mirror

@Ariane: readabilty, one glance at a command and you know what's a instruction to the db, and what's a command to it

@Ariane mention it here! :D i'm pretty sure you can start a bounty on other users' questions...

@JourneymanGeek Then we should capitalize our whole code but not the arguments?

3:06 AM
@Ariane: for example INSERT somearguement IN somedatabase ORDERBY somecriteria

@tapped-out I put a bounty on a question once and it was useless, so... But anyway, here. superuser.com/questions/542495/…

as opposed to insert some arguement in omedatabase orderby somecriteria

@JourneymanGeek Also, putting line-breaks and perhaps tabs at appropriate places in your query does the same effect with probably less annoyance.

Can someone help me with two quick questions?

@becko: you've used up one already ;p
(go ahead, ask!)

3:07 AM
@becko "What's your name?" and "How old are you?" - those are quite quick.
(We're such trolls.)

@Ariane: I can throw a 50pt bounty on it

1st: I've always used klite codec pack with media player classic. Is there something better out there? Or should I continue using it?

@JourneymanGeek Just like that? o.o Well, if you want to, feel free.

usual rules apply - you keep an eye on it until it expires and let me know if there's a worky answer

@JourneymanGeek ok, i'm asking 3 questions

3:08 AM
@becko: I use cccp these days

:)

@becko I advise to use VLC. No codecs required, ever, as far as I'm concerned.

but personally, if it works for you, why change?

cccp... what's that?

3:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek no particular reason... just wondering if there's something much better

anime oriented codec pack
for some codecs and some cards, there's specific combinations that work well
but that's super specific

the second question: What djvu viewer can I use? I've been using SumatraPDF, but it gets stuck with some of my djvu files

like with windows 7, the onboard codecs work brilliantly on intel video, on some formats

@JourneymanGeek I have windows 8. But I can't play .mkv files with a clean windows installation. I need 3rd party codecs

ooh, there I'm lost

3:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek nevermind. Maybe someone else uses .djvu?

Bob
@becko Can Calibre open them?

@becko: yeah, I know, I mean, in some cases, you're best off looking up your video card/codec combo to see if there's specific combinations that work better

Bob
Oh, wait. Calibre can convert, but not sure about opening.

@Bob let me see...

@becko Did you take a look at this? pcsupport.about.com/od/fileextensions/f/djvufile.htm
@JourneymanGeek Isn't that complicating one's life a lot when VLC can read pretty much anything out of the box (or rather installer)?

3:13 AM
@Ariane: cccp handles MKVs pretty well, and a LOT of sub groups use it

@Bob nope. calibre doesn't open djvu files

I have VLC installed too. Some stuff dosen't work as well on it

Bob
@Ariane 1. VLC doesn't support everything (it actually includes a bunch of codecs, it does not run codec-less)

@JourneymanGeek I can believe that, but VLC has handled well everything I've thrown at it so far. Do you have an example?

Bob
2. VLC's interface leaves much to be desired.

3:14 AM
@Bob Yeah, I meant "external codecs". Haven't run into anything it couldn't read yet.

Bob
3. A DierctShow (is that what it's called?) codec will work with any program that plays videos through DS, of which there are many

@Ariane: eh, not at the moment

Bob
@Ariane Yea, the common ones.

@Bob I used to have Splayer... is it good?

Bob
I've had some trouble with some specific ones I can't remember right now.
Apparently MPC works with those.

3:15 AM
@Bob Uhm, as far as I know it's highly customizable if you put some time into looking for a theme or playing in the advanced options. Though to be honest I don't quite care for my video player's interface as I just watch stuff full screen.

@Bob: precisely. You can even use cccp with the metro video player

Bob
Honestly, the if some video doesn't work I convert it so it does. I don't want a bunch of codec packs.
@JourneymanGeek there's also a bunch of embedded players with other programs that work

@Bob: cccp is kinda standard on my systems

Bob
but I haven't had much luck with CCCP in the past

kinda like foobar2000 (and various plugins)

Bob
3:16 AM
or maybe it was the matroska demuxer that failed

It's possible to be able to convert a video but not play it?

Bob
@Ariane yes, definitely

there's native programs that work, but I know 99% of the time, on my systems, cccp should handle things

Bob
more often, people will just install codec packs
I haven't had luck installing them myself
oh yea
@Ariane VLC has some trouble with 10-bit video, last I checked
but there has been several releases since then
Hm.. they may have introduced support as of 2.0.5

@JourneymanGeek cccp comes with a player?

3:20 AM
@becko: mpc-hc
@Bob: was reading this on tested tested.com/tech/…
and was laughing at this review stereophile.com/content/…

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Thousand dollar speakers? Pssssh.
That's nothing.
Wait till you see the thousand dollar audio and power cables

@Bob: 10,000 dollar power cables.... ;p
chewed by rabbits.

Bob
:P
Probably sourced from some ebay seller based in China

Bob
o.O

3:24 AM
so obviously if I troll audiophiles go into the audio business I need to sell armoured power cables ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...I thought you were joking.
Sadly, I can't read it.
Crappy network connection :\
@JourneymanGeek Covered with a DU casing.

@JourneymanGeek mpc-hc... is that a Media Player Classic?

cryogenically treated of course
@becko: yeah
(thats your standard 'armoured' water pipe)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Is that... water inlet piping?

then claim seperating the lines sheilds it from harmonics or some crap like that
@Bob: :)

3:28 AM
http://img.weburbanist.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/fake-cell-tower-disguises.jpg
Lol. Antenna towers. Apparently there've even been giant fake boulders.
2

@Bob: cough Its high grade water-proof cable protection.
also, rabbit proof

3:46 AM
XD
I totally forgot how lulzy parts of that community is
I need to pick up some batteries, AAs for my camera, and a C for size comparison ._.

1 hour later…
4:51 AM
grrr my phone won't root :'(
And the Enter key is not working in the Recovery mode @_@

5:20 AM
@HackToHell Where do you find out whether roots for certain Android phones exist?

@Luke xda

Alright... Is there a search there?
NVM
Dumb question

Hey, uhm. Firefox has kept giving me errors about how it can't sync for weeks, and Windows Update hasn't done anything in months even though I've set it up for automatic updates.

And I know there are updates for Windows, because when I logged out earlier, there was a message on the login screen saying there were importand updates available.

Any ideas?

@Luke sathya answered !

Yup, saw that... Trying to find out if I can do it for my LG Optimus G

5:33 AM
Apparently a new rom has been released and I can't find the new flash tool for it :'(

For my phone? Or yours?

Heh, my phone is way too unpopular for anyone to make anyone for this, so I've given up the idea of rooting it.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...why do you need a C battery?
do they even make those anymore?

@Bob: yes and tradition
I use it for size comparison photos ;p
they're standard, and everyone knows more or less how big they are
I could use a advertisement fake credit card instead
quicky crappy photo of my music gear as of now ;p
want to take a nicer photo once I get my new headphones next week ^^

Bob
@JourneymanGeek most have forgotten by now

5:46 AM
XD
9V then? ;p
we use C batteries in the bigass torch dad uses for dog walking (well used to, we use the rechargable 4.5 powerpack instead)

@Luke my phone :'(

What one @HackToHell

(fastrackUSB on the right, new amp on the left, my little fiio e3)

@JourneymanGeek I think you might be too old. C and D batteries are but an ancient relic for the most part. I'm not even sure I remember their size. It would probably be much smarter to use an AA battery for size comparison. Or apple. Or pencil. Or eraser. Or pound of butter. Or a 355 mL drinking can. Or... C batteries are probably very far from something "everyone knows the size of".

@Ariane: most of those arn't standard sizes, and AA batteries are too small
and credit cards are one dimentional

5:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek Still, find something better than a C battery. How about lip balm / lipstick? Everyone knows that kind of size. And pounds of butter are very standard. oo'

@Ariane: ... I don't have lipstick. What would I do with lipstick? ;p

@Ariane Where are you from?

and the C battery is a silly tradition, from the famous fish liberation kit

@JourneymanGeek Mostly lip balm. Everyone knows the size of a tube of lip balm. Also, how about a number padlock, that we use for lockers at schools? That's even more universal and obvious.
@Luke Canada. Why?

Same here... I am just used to talking to Americans, and I saw you say mL...

5:56 AM
@Ariane: don't have any of the former, the latter is not standard
and drink cans are 330 ml here ;p

355 here

see? not standard!
Batteries are the same size everywhere

@JourneymanGeek 330 or 355, it's still pretty much the same. And padlocks, there are non-standard ones, but they don't vary much, and the very standard kind is overwhelmingly more common
Being standard doesn't mean it's a good idea. Some obscure computer chip LX-44567d (random name) might be the most standard thing on Earth, no one knows it. The same problem arises with ancient batteries.
Relatively same-sized is enough.

The 'C' battery (or R14 battery) is a standard size of battery typically used in medium-drain applications such as toys and musical instruments. As of 2007, C batteries accounted for 4% of alkaline primary battery sales in the United States. In Switzerland as of 2008, C batteries totalled 5.4% of primary battery sales and 3.4% of secondary battery sales. Properties A 'C' battery measures 50 mm in length and 26.2 mm in diameter. The voltage and capacity of a 'C'-size battery depends on the battery chemistry and discharge conditions. Alkaline 'C' batteries can hold up to 8,000 mAh,...
(for all you folks with no clue what I am on about)
what about 9v batteries?

I do know what a C battery is but I argue people aren't familiar enough with them, and people younger than me might not even have seen one, ever.
9 volt batteries, pretty much everyone has seen and/or used one, but how many are familiar enough with them to know their size at a glance? I've used one even just a few months ago for my alarm clock, yet I'm still relatively unsure of the size, because I use them so rarely.
@Luke American units are evil.
4

6:03 AM
Imperialist measures!

@Ariane I agree! I just hate how no one I know in Canada uses A4 paper, but uses Letter instead :P

hmm
I could use a laptop hard drive, but even fewer people know what that is

@Luke That's just basic standardness. You don't live next to the US without using the same paper formats. It would just be super inconvenient.
@JourneymanGeek How about a CD? They're not outdated enough for young people to know about them yet

I know, but when I'm selling printers, and they default to A4 cause you choose Canada, it gets annoying

@Ariane: flat!
the 3d-ness of it is pretty important

6:05 AM
I'd say an audio cassette, but I'm among the very last generation of people who saw and used those in their childhood.
@Luke Weird. THey should know A4 is not an Canadian standard at all.

Should... But it's that way with HPs and Lexmarks alike

@Luke Wishful thinking companies? :p

Yup...

@JourneymanGeek I know! An individual size of yogurt! They do vary a bit, but they're so, so, so everywhere, and the variation is minimal.

@Ariane: we do not buy yogurt ;p

6:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek

1. Why?
2. I bet you know its size very well regardless, from the marketing it has.

@Ariane: we make our own

Show off!

hmm
the standard 500ml bottle?

No standard 500mL bottles here...

@Luke: tradition, really

6:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek Isn't that too big? Also THOSE vary a LOT.

its pretty easy to make, tho we swapped fresh milk

Never tried myself...

@Ariane: there's a 'generic' 500 ml bottle here ;p

@JourneymanGeek Really? My mother stopped making it because it was a huge pain in the butt.
@JourneymanGeek What does it look like?

@Ariane: we're indian.
@Ariane: squareish

6:10 AM
Square?! Picture.

trying to find a picture ;p

Evening @TomWijsman

@Luke A Indian phone :P

?!?
Oh right
What type?

which is prolly not available in the international market

6:12 AM
Gotta give some specs or a model

@JourneymanGeek I just thought of a 2 L container of milk/juice, that is super standard, but that' way too big.

@HackToHell Looks like a Samsung Galaxy S3
@Ariane 2L of Coke?

well yes :P

coke bottles arn't standard either ._.

6:14 AM
@Luke There's a big difference between a 2L BOTTLE and a 2L carton container of milk/other.
https://content1.animepaper.co/thumbnails/preview/198984/1/animepaper.net_picture_standard_artists_refeia_size_comparison_198984_nat_preview-6858d678.jpg
This has shown up very high in Google image search results for "standard size comparison". I don't know if I should be scared, amused or despaired.

403 forbidden
heh
and a metric ton of poodles
eh might be NSFW... so...
might want to delete it for allquixotic's sake ;p

NSFW?

yes
If bob or quixy come in ...

Don't say yes, explain what it is.

@Ariane not safe for work

6:20 AM
not safe for work

403 for me too, but nice find

^^' People use that instead of "inappropriate"? Meaning as long as the boss isn't shocked it's all right? That's... strange.
Also, I can't delete it, so @JourneymanGeek will have to do it.

You can delete your own

I can't either

6:20 AM
@Luke I can for like one minute I think.

need to get a mod to do it ;p

Oliver's extension is working well for me

Sathya's here

and I REALLY don't want to flag it
XD

@Sathya What extention?

6:21 AM
I thought italic username meant moderator.

nope
means channel owner
its totally useless XD

@Luke it doesn't onebox items from imgur & YouTube

... Onebox?

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/q84/s480x480/923130_511993882181341_2147182718_n.jpg
Cats are like perverts but for hugs.

@Luke it doesn't preview/embed("onebox") the images in chat

6:23 AM
Ahhh

@Sathya What's "onebox"?

@Ariane chat takes certain links & embeds them in one line

Lol, people are being so mean to Justin Bieber. They make him like the devil. Or even worse, like Apple. fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/…

@Sathya I know, but I still don't understand what "onebox" is.

6:27 AM
^^ the image is oneboxed
ta da !

Oooooh. Sorry, but that's a pretty awful idea for a verb.

@Ariane: basically its an inline preview

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/382655_161066560746964_1446893651_n.jpg
So much awful stuff on my Facebook feed today.

@Ariane Did you log in to fb after years :P

6:29 AM
@HackToHell Not that bad, but I don't even always go daily, indeed.
fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/… I probably look like the espresso picture with a normal coffee. oo'
fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/… LOL! And I actually did laugh out loud just now.
Okay, I normally don't mind ads, but seriously, ads that have sound are unacceptable.
Especially when you fiddle through the 10 tabs you've just opened to find them.
Sorry, I'm spamming you guys with absolutely useless off-topic stuff. Maybe I shoud stop.

lol
if we minded, we'd complain ;p
(not a licence to overdo it, course)

Erases 10 links
(Kidding, of course)

erases all the things

Erases all the th... what?

Sorry, this is so ridiculous I just couldn't resist.

6:45 AM
the name in french makes it sound... edible

@JourneymanGeek It's an automatic, awful Google translation, but true.
A more appropriate translation would be pistolet à patate or pistolet à pomme de terre

actually, I need to torment someone with that

I had that
Anyways, fading off to sleep... Talk tomorrow

@Luke Bye.
@JourneymanGeek Seriously, throwing potato pieces everywhere and making a mess? Guns that throw vacuum projectiles are one thing, but seriously, that's cruel cleaning-wise. xD (Not to mention it must be pretty ridiculous in a play gunfight between children to say "oh wait, I need to take a bit out of my potato to load my gun"... or just to play-fight all serious-looking, holding your fake gun.... and a potato in the other hand. xD

naw, the french ;p

6:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek I don't understand

@Ariane: friend of mine occationally lapses into french
and I reply in utterly horridly broken franglish.

Lapses into french?

yes!
its a running joke

I don't understand the meaning of "to lapse into French".

hm
I'm not sure how to explain lapsing into a language ;p
like you randomly switch and rant in another language

6:54 AM
Oooooh, yeaaaah. Like the classic Spanish lady that stats speaking very high, very fast, undistinguishible insults in Spanish when really angry?

PRECISELY!

Okay. :p
What's the English term for an ad declared illegal because it led to believe that a product did something it did not?

hm
misleading advertising?
OFCOM in the UK does that a lot

Thanks.

@Luke Morning. :)

7:07 AM
I'm watching a video/slideshow of old ads that would be scandalous today, and I noticed this. Shocking how that clearly very old thing has design trends similar to what we see today. Also shocking is the difference between the awful, old and badly coloured logo and the partly recent-looking design of the ad.
Lol, an ad about "AUTOMATIC toasters". How is it a toaster and not just a grill if it's not automatic? xD
"More doctors smoke CAMELS than any other cigarette!"

7:22 AM
:o

This is sort of on-topic for once. Is it possible for an image not to be square? (Or rectangular)

Also, I'm super shocked. I had never noticed before that my "pointer" mouse cursor (when you hover over a link) has a sleeve. o_o

no idea
eheh, custom cursor theme?

@Ariane I suppose an image could be another shape
but then it has to have transparency

7:25 AM
@Leathe So the image file itself remains square?

technically it's still a square
yes.

I'm guessing so

What about an SVG or other vector image? Is the file itself still square?

I'm guessing so
I actually have no clue ;p

Lol, a picture of a woman with a big glass of beer in hand, breast-feeding her baby with the other hand. "Beer is nourishing!"
LOL! "Never drive after a good meal without a little glass of Cointreau liquor."

7:29 AM
@Ariane Not quite sure. I assume it depends on what software you're using to view the image
browsers view images as squares or rectangles regardless of the file format

@Leathe So the definition of the file itself isn't square, but some browsers, for example, will make them a square frame because it's easier?
Hah, you beat me to it.

to my knowledge, yeah
let's say you have an image on your website and with CSS you edit the image to have rounded corners
it's only going to look like it has rounded corners, but placing anything in that "empty" space is still overlapping the image itself

Mhm.

don't take my word on this as fact, though. I could be wrong :P

Well I'm pretty sure CSS doesn't make an image round. :p

7:36 AM
no :P it only makes it look round

Mhm.

can make it look round*

Thanks.
http://www.topito.com/top-50-des-pubs-qui-feraient-scandale-aujourdhui
You should take a look at these. Some are in French, but those old hilariously unacceptable ads that would cause an uproar today are just so entertaning.

also, I have yet to come across an image editing software where you can make the image a round image. also I have no idea how the aspect ratios would work with a round image

And this is my last off-topic annoyance for today! I'll go back to bed.

7:38 AM
but.. this is a chat. everything is off-topic by default :P

Lol.
Anyway, bye-bye!

also, I'm at work so I'm not going to click the link :<
bye

Haha. Lose your time, but discreetly, is it?

;b
I call it waiting for instructions.

Ahaha. Bye!

7:40 AM
bye

7:52 AM
lol

:D

8:42 AM
lol
there's an XKCD for everything
