I got 4 "old" servers from work at home that I wiped and use for my home lab. They are super hot, and only hold up to 6 HDDs each. Because they're old, I don't want to use them for anything mission critical. Only 2 are running though
I also feel like, depending on budget and how old they are, a modern 'consumer' system likely would be more efficient, lack of organic out of band management aside
But I offer being another factor for one business I help out - a chiropractor office with about 25G of data to keep backed up within our nation's borders
That was also my Zoom background during COVID-19 before they allowed anyone to WFH
@forest Using iffy drives in raid would be hell, I really wouldn't... Every bad block that gets hit during a read or write results in the array being labeled DEGRADED, then making you go through a lengthy rebuild... and if it finds more bad blocks on other drives you'll go for a full FAILED :x

the one I have (/he has) now is pretty compact, like 18cm wide and 30cm deep/tall, and has a bunch of small drawers that can be individually clasped shut, and a carrying handle up top... it's so incredibly convenient, but impossible to find back
@JourneymanGeek lol, another thing my dad picked up somewhere is a tiny aluminium carpenter's square... we were doing some DiY the past couple of days, and that thing came in incredibly handy... Also from some dollar store and probably impossible to find again
had to level my new fridge years ago, quickly picked up one of these from a local store... then after having to adjust the feet on both sides a few times, I flipped it on the spot and found out that it wasn't exactly level
basically the levelling vial with the bubble in the middle was not glued in place at a right angle, so it'd look level when in fact it was like 1 degree off
a very simple mistake which makes the whole product unusable o_O
I guess quality control costs money... it also implies both quality and control, both of which i don't think applied on that thing :x
so she comes home exhausted 5 days a week, and hardly sleeps because of stress, even on friday night because her body is still in work(/stress) mode for an additional day :(
uni is better in that sense - yes, we do usually work crazy hours close to deadlines, but the periods between those tend to be far more manageable and flexible
If I want to take a friday off because I need to do stuff or we want to go somewhere for an extended weekend, I can... In gf's case there's so many last minute emergencies (you never know which ones, but they WILL be there because of shitty management and planning), we've hardly been away even after covid
but I also have a pile of projects I don't have the time or energy to do
I need to test out ubuntu 22.04 for my router builds, and I have a system I need to stand up so I can test out 10 gig links at my new place without lugging my desktop everywhere
bunch of marines sent into Iraq in 2004, who pretty much begged friends and relatives to mail them batteries so they could operate their night vision goggles o_O
also, there's 2 types of biscuits in the standard pack, choco and butter(has eggs), and no one likes the former, so I tend to trade the butter ones (which I can't eat)
@JourneymanGeek prices will probably at least triple when this would be required, but maybe they should be triple
going full vegan is a great thing btw imo, for me personally however there's a recent development that makes it difficult - sensitivity to mannitol and fructooligosaccharides, which are in soy and a lot of mushrooms, and those are a major component of most meat replacements
