1:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek Whoops, misread

@CanadianLuke a lot of the data I have is shrug, I can get it again

At this point, I only backup documents and pictures. The rest can be re-obtained

yup
so. assuming I had a 'pile of semi reliable drives' - I'd probably use em lol

2:10 AM
cough Use RAID cough

2:48 AM
@forest I do, but I'm currently limited by the space on my servers :P Physical space
If I could get a large 24- or 48-bay system for 3.5" SATA drives, I'd be golden! And super warm too with all the heat

lol
I used to work on those :D

Get some HBAs... Experiment with fiber....
I got 4 "old" servers from work at home that I wiped and use for my home lab. They are super hot, and only hold up to 6 HDDs each. Because they're old, I don't want to use them for anything mission critical. Only 2 are running though

@CanadianLuke on the bright side, if your're only using 2, got spares? :D

I mean, technically I have spares... But I think the shipping would kill

lol
I mean the other 2 lol
I also feel like, depending on budget and how old they are, a modern 'consumer' system likely would be more efficient, lack of organic out of band management aside

2:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek Exactly. These are 10+ year old servers

right now most of the stuff I have runs happily on a 6 core xeon D
so practically, outside the 'nice things', I can do everything on a modernish desktop
I was actually pondering fully self hosting after the move
but bob kinda pointed out uh, there's always the risk I make someone angry, and better that a hosted server get say DDOSed than my poor home system :D

3:34 AM
That's one way to look at it. I look at it as redundancy - if I get hit by a bus and am the only one with access to a server, that's no good.
I host stuff for people I know, but that's it. No new customers get to host on my systems

Hah. The bus factor for the stuff I run at home is... bad

4:03 AM
Exactly
But I offer being another factor for one business I help out - a chiropractor office with about 25G of data to keep backed up within our nation's borders
That was also my Zoom background during COVID-19 before they allowed anyone to WFH

4:18 AM
Lol
Family is completely untechie and I literally have no one who can do something as simple as power cycle a box
It's also a big, mostly concrete flat so getting reliable wireless has been a challenge
Meanwhile dad forgets to check if his domain and email is paid up until things break....

2 hours later…
MiG
6:24 AM
@forest Using iffy drives in raid would be hell, I really wouldn't... Every bad block that gets hit during a read or write results in the array being labeled DEGRADED, then making you go through a lengthy rebuild... and if it finds more bad blocks on other drives you'll go for a full FAILED :x
@CanadianLuke :D
@JourneymanGeek That invites domain squatters... I guess your dad is now unwittingly in the business of selling VIAGRA-CIALIS and sex toys? :P

@MiG lol usually manage to do it during the grace period

MiG
I set my own calendar alarms now tbh, you never know how bad someone is at tracking these until you know they aren't

6:51 AM
I should lol
tbh its cheap enough I should just pay up for the next decade or so and let it autorenew lol
but them that's putting off the problem for a decade

MiG
better reduce the risk to one window in ten years than ten windows in ten years imo

MiG
although the other risk is you in ten years forgetting wth that reminder email is about, or the hosting company changing names a couple of times
ah, biannual?

lol ya

MiG
coincidentally finding myself shopping for a screw/plug organiser atm btw :)

7:05 AM
lol

MiG
borrowed one from my dad when we moved to the current place... one and a half years ago... and for some reason he wants it back (:

I have a bunch of daiso pill organisers

MiG
not familiar with that brand, prob not available here

@MiG Daiso's a japanese dollar store

MiG
the one I have (/he has) now is pretty compact, like 18cm wide and 30cm deep/tall, and has a bunch of small drawers that can be individually clasped shut, and a carrying handle up top... it's so incredibly convenient, but impossible to find back
@JourneymanGeek ah :)

7:08 AM
They're awesome for small storage boxen

MiG
might browse some of these dollar type stores here, I'm pretty sure this thing came from one of them as well
problem is they commission or buy batches of stuff, so the store complement changes over time
this thing is at least 10-15 years old I reckon

lol yup

MiG
and it's paaahhhfect :'(

I have this tiny crowbar that I found once
its the neatest thing, and super useful
never dound another one
3
Q: What is this 15 pins connector?

Winter I do not think it's a serial port as there's too much pins. It's used to plug a very old controller. Will I be able to find any adapter to USB?

I feel old

MiG
7:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek lol, another thing my dad picked up somewhere is a tiny aluminium carpenter's square... we were doing some DiY the past couple of days, and that thing came in incredibly handy... Also from some dollar store and probably impossible to find again

I KNOW

MiG
15cm long, includes a spirit level in the handle
although I know from experience that budget spirit levels are usually a really bad idea :x

lol
uh
I've not really messed with my digital one lol
maybe once my notice period is over lol

MiG
had to level my new fridge years ago, quickly picked up one of these from a local store... then after having to adjust the feet on both sides a few times, I flipped it on the spot and found out that it wasn't exactly level

lol
you can use a phone for that
the fancy one that's still in the box has a laser

MiG
7:30 AM
not at this accuracy level
basically you need it to be level width wise, but sit slightly back so the door closes on its own... that's millimeter accuracy you need
the shitty one was definitely, totally unsuited for that :x

MiG
basically the levelling vial with the bubble in the middle was not glued in place at a right angle, so it'd look level when in fact it was like 1 degree off
a very simple mistake which makes the whole product unusable o_O
I guess quality control costs money... it also implies both quality and control, both of which i don't think applied on that thing :x

yup
Even with good levels there's differences tho
(I watch machining videos.. something I'd love to learn to do but erf)

MiG
I'm not building a chip fab, I just want stuff to not roll off of the table on its own

That was about 30 sgd?

MiG
7:35 AM
"aliexpress", full stop :P

MiG
have you tested it? ;)

nothing wrong with stuff off there lol
Haven't had the time and spoons
2 weeks from now maybe

MiG
it's very easy - put it on your table, turn it on, and then rotate it 180 degrees in place

MiG
7:36 AM
if it doesn't give the same reading, you may want to consider alternatives :P

Its literally been sitting in a box for... a month or two lol

MiG
oh dear :x

which is why I quit my job lol

MiG
@JourneymanGeek I mean, it's aliexpress so warranty void when pressing 'buy now', so I guess unboxing on arrival day wouldn't change anything :P

MiG
7:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek eh? :(

well ya

MiG
How come?

@MiG lol, my shifts went even nuttier
and at some point the money ain't worth it

MiG
oh, that sucks :/
yer
I think that applies to gf's job, the problem is she hasn't arrived at that conclusion yet

If your life is basically work and sleep, and you realise you're literally too tired to do the things you love, its time to quit

MiG
7:40 AM
so she comes home exhausted 5 days a week, and hardly sleeps because of stress, even on friday night because her body is still in work(/stress) mode for an additional day :(

I'll need to find another job but...
some time to sleep would be nice

MiG
@JourneymanGeek exactly that

its not even stress for me. its the schedules
lol

MiG
man :(
uni is better in that sense - yes, we do usually work crazy hours close to deadlines, but the periods between those tend to be far more manageable and flexible

lol
work's also basically a dumpster fire
but stress means caring. I'm kinda past that
I print out a monthly roster. I've been crossing out the days, and I've marked out my last day lol

MiG
7:42 AM
If I want to take a friday off because I need to do stuff or we want to go somewhere for an extended weekend, I can... In gf's case there's so many last minute emergencies (you never know which ones, but they WILL be there because of shitty management and planning), we've hardly been away even after covid
@JourneymanGeek dumpster fire sounds about right

then its
"But we're short of manpower"

MiG
@JourneymanGeek she cares, that's part of the problem

we've been short almost the entire time I have been in the team
@MiG well

MiG
@JourneymanGeek I bet they were already short of manpower BEFORE you left, same with gf
@JourneymanGeek lol exactly

your employer dosen't care about you
@MiG we finally hit estab lol
and one guy got promoted
THEN I quit

MiG
7:43 AM
she had a promotion, then pretty much did most of her old job on the side because she's the only expert in that field there :/

so its 3 newbies (and an opening) and my team lead lol

MiG
eek
@JourneymanGeek estab?

total people in the team
we need 4+1
and if we did 12 hour shifts 2+2 or 3 days a week... we're actually good

MiG
ah

right now I have...
5 different kinds of shifts
including 12 hour shifts ONLY ON WEEKENDS
My boss feels he knows better?
He can go find someone else

MiG
7:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek oh fuck :(

language!

MiG
yeah, that's not long term sustainable

I'm ok with 12 hour shifts
IF I HAVE 2-3 days off afters

MiG
@JourneymanGeek every weekend?

MiG
7:46 AM
when's your last day?

alternate, day or night
29th

MiG
still, that really disrupts your social life if you have long weekend and night shifts to fit in

I'm doing a 14:30-2200 shift I think

MiG
hehe, 11 days and counting

What social life?

MiG
7:48 AM
begrudgingly went to amazon to check for screw boxes... damn, they have quite a selection
@JourneymanGeek ouch :(

lemme put it this way
I can't remember the last time I went out with friends
my social life is mostly talking to people on the internet

MiG
heh, I guess WE are flexible :P

lol
waves a phone
I'm always connected
but I also have a pile of projects I don't have the time or energy to do
I need to test out ubuntu 22.04 for my router builds, and I have a system I need to stand up so I can test out 10 gig links at my new place without lugging my desktop everywhere

MiG
tbh, that I recognise
The disadvantage of living together in a relatively small apartment... For some of these projects I need quiet time, and that's impossible

lol
I can do the 'space'
but right now its "go to work" "come home and sleep"
the memory lapses are a bit troublesome too

MiG
7:53 AM
that's also not a good sign
had some very stressful periods, then you start forgetting things and making mistakes

Oh god
I hate that so much

MiG
it's mostly getting disorganised that stresses me out about the lack of time part
part of the summer holidays, including this week, is cleaning, clearing out and organising stuff
having to spend an hour looking for something I could normally retrieve in a minute adds to the stress levels

lol
think 'forgetting to add attachment' type stuff
or literally forgetting what you were doing halfway through it

MiG
ended up buying a new multimeter because I couldn't find the old one... then of course when cleaning up, it resurfaced

lol
I don't have that problem
mine's on my desk... where it shouldn't be

MiG
7:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek oh, I'm good at that as well... going through stuff and making piles, then switching up the piles halfway :x

oh just everything ends up on my desk
or the floor now that I don't have a dog

MiG
that I try to keep as empty as possible, only things I need that day on there

cleaning up needs effort

MiG
and time, that's my problem

honestly
I can squeeze the stuff I need to do into the spaces between things
I just don't have the energy to

MiG
8:04 AM
hopefully that'll change
any idea what you want to do next?

well yes and no
I'd like to switch over to something more hands on - sysadmin side of things
but apparently my experience is... not enough or the right sort

MiG
any way to plug that differently? usually having applied knowledge of something makes the IT part of it more valuable

I was chasing a community management role here but - that's not likely to happen any time soon
@MiG I need certs, so gonna do certs till I get hired I guess

MiG
that always seemed alien to me, a company (like MS) giving you a certificate and that apparently being something really valuable :)
what was the thing? MSVP or something?

it has value to HR folks

MiG
8:08 AM
ugh, HR folks

its basically "Yes, this person has paid to take a test to do the thing"
\o/
HR folks have all the power

MiG
I guess HR people are so utterly disconnected from the work processes they're supposed to find people for, they solely rely on certificates and stuff

lol yes?
Or formal experience

MiG
yer

cause its easier to look at those things

MiG
8:09 AM
and I get the impression HR people are also usually utterly uninterested in trying to do the right thing
COMPUTER SAYS NOOOO

lol
why do the right thing?
When you can do the "procedurally easy thing"

MiG
that reminds me of that WW2 saying... "there's the right way, there's the wrong way and then there's the army way"
@JourneymanGeek that
have you seen the miniseries Generation Kill?

No, but it rings a bell

MiG
bunch of marines sent into Iraq in 2004, who pretty much begged friends and relatives to mail them batteries so they could operate their night vision goggles o_O

War never changes I guess
and heh
my last reservist is this year

MiG
8:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek I hear Ron Perlman when reading that :D

so I need to check then where I can dump my gear (legally) :D

MiG
@JourneymanGeek departing the age range? :)
is there still conscription in SG?

@MiG almost - but also met my required number of things
yup

in theory all my gear belongs to the army bit just gonna dump the stuff I don't need

MiG
8:14 AM
"There is a right way, a wrong way, and the "army way" which yields the same results as the wrong way, but takes much much longer." :D

my boots are nearly new (but can't really hand them down, too big) , the duffle bag MKII is a actually quite nice
but stuff like my helmet and uniform can be returned

MiG
@JourneymanGeek you're not keeping dangerous stuff at home I assume? I know the Swiss send everyone home with a battle rifle o_O

naw
I could get tetanus from the old duffle bag, and food poisoning from the mess tins!

MiG
lol
- Meals Rejected by Everyone
- Meals Rarely Enjoyed
- Meals Rejected by Ethiopians
- Meals Rejected by the Enemy
- Meals Refusing to Exit*

lol
SAF combat rations arn't bad warmed up... as long as its veggie
some of the non veg items are notorious

MiG
8:16 AM
heh, how so?
@JourneymanGeek that reminds me btw, had my worst bout of food poisoning in Morocco last month :*(

also, there's 2 types of biscuits in the standard pack, choco and butter(has eggs), and no one likes the former, so I tend to trade the butter ones (which I can't eat)
@MiG they don't taste terrible :D

MiG
I've never had a fever during that, but I got a high one there - with an outdoor temp of like 46C and a badly functioning AC unit in the hotel room :/
@JourneymanGeek allergic to butter?

Oh
can't eat eggs
(relgious reasons)
the cocoa ones don't have egg in it

MiG
religious reasons?

I have no idea why
Yeah, religiously lactovegan

MiG
8:19 AM
hindu thing?

hindu/caste thing

MiG
ah, the abolished-but-not-really caste system :x

and tbh, couldn't bring myself to, I like animals :D

MiG
which caste isn't allowed delicious omelettes? :(

I'm fine with that
I mean, if you feel its not important to you,I'm not judging

MiG
8:20 AM
tbh, I don't think the chickens are terribly upset about their eggs (:

well - potential life + factory poultry farming is terrible
but ehh
I'm not one of those silly "YOU ARE BAD AND YOU MUST FEEL BAD" sorts
I respect your life choices

MiG
ah, we don't even have battery cage eggs anymore, prohibited by law
that's one of the good things of living on the tree hugging hippie side of Europe, fewer things to be concerned about

AH current job's in a checkpoint
have you ever smelt a truckload of chickens?

MiG
Having said that we do have a huge number of pigs kept in less happy conditions, "mega stables" (translated) is a thing in the south of the country

I once had a solidly blocked nose
and nearly gagged

MiG
8:23 AM
ew

So, short of people eating dogs and cats.
I'm like not judging

MiG
eek

but "geek's lactovegan" comes up a lot in context of food

MiG
nitrogen pollution in Europe... North of NL is fine, south is where all the pigs are kept
Also, apparently like 80% of Belgium has a problem, and northern Italy heh

lol
@MiG there's this netflix TV show called "Salt Fat Acid Heat"

MiG
8:26 AM
to be fair, also all heavy industry and Rotterdam port are there

and there's this pig famer who takes super good care of his pigs

MiG
@JourneymanGeek yes, loved it
@JourneymanGeek prices will probably at least triple when this would be required, but maybe they should be triple
going full vegan is a great thing btw imo, for me personally however there's a recent development that makes it difficult - sensitivity to mannitol and fructooligosaccharides, which are in soy and a lot of mushrooms, and those are a major component of most meat replacements

I can't give up yogurt lol

MiG
heh

8 hours later…
4:04 PM
@JourneymanGeek Not a fan of greek yogurt. Other yogurt is fine though.

@Michael ah, ours is kinda like greek but not quite
but apparently bulgarian yogurt is different

Maybe american greek yogurt is different

Might just be preferences

1 hour later…
5:30 PM
Is this the upside down?

I don't like that question mark

I mean, it isn't to me
but it depends n your definition of upside down

5:45 PM
The alternate dimension where everything is trying to kill you and Microsoft owns all OSS

uh, so almost australia?

MiG
6:54 PM
@Michael Still haven't started watching that one, I hear good things

roar
@Michael Yeah, that one was a huge surprise. I had to go to gimp.org just to double-check.
Anyhoo...
> Microsoft ❤️ Open Source
And it shows.

The "edge://surf" game lets you play as a penguin. Does cultural appropriation apply to software mascots?

lol
