For me it is Fribre coming unto house -> 'fivre to ethernet' (which turned out to be a full fledged wire less routes ) -> Wireless access point/router

current place is fibre - ONR -> splits to 3 one end's the other apartment with an AP and TV, one AP and TV on the second one, and my stuff on the third ...

+ my current Aps are chinese mesh routers with the management app accidentally broken so I can't manage or update them

I have no idwa big my home it. But I only use the kitchen to cook in, the living room only when I have guest etc. So I basically live in the same room as all my equipment

I've built all my home stuff for silence, and even then I moved the big server to the storage room

No, R300 #1 was my main server at uni, the other two were bought as spare parts and test server

when we were running the dorm server room we got a full sized 19" rack (2m tall or something?) and filled it up... for home use now I can do with far less :P

building my stuff according to usage these days... everything I want to run 24/7 can be done off of a Raspberry Pi... if I need more power or access to the giant storage array, I send a WOL ping

Probably dumping my 3rd gen intel - its too noisy, and I am not sure why

I'd keep it tbh, I use a similar setup (but on linux) to access my home stuff securely from anywhere on the planet

and it won't need much computing power, so doesn't have to be something that draws a lot of electricity

I'd want 16-20 tb, wth some NVMe for extra zooooom

but that's about 6-8 months of budgeting and planning

and I'm checks 6.4 months from being able to afford my apartment with no issues :D

maybe less if i got a raise or a loan :D

@JourneymanGeek I admittedly went a bit overboard, but I wanted ample storage and reliability... went the ZFS route :)

just realised, my profile pic is actually said server :D

the idea btw is that that thing spends the majority of its time offline, it's a huge power hog

I keep local caches of things I'm working with and/or watching, every once in a while I turn it on and exchange stuff, then power it down again

gonna add an 1-2TB SSD to said Raspberry Pi, that'll be the proverbial pilot light

There is absolutely no excuse for me to be wasting time doing meaningless things when I could be working on the same sorts of projects, learning JavaScript/PowerShell/Docker/LXD/ZFS/whatever while simultaneously meeting all of my personal and professional obligations.

yep, same

so I only power it up once a month or so

went from RAID to ZFS btw, because rebuilding got to dangerously long times

basically the chance of a second drive failing during rebuild time became realistic, few reliable manufacturers left so the drives tend to be similar in brand, type and batch

gotta say the effort was quite doable, FreeNAS and ZFS are relatively straightforward, and the case I got was a dream to assemble the server in
