3:43 PM
19" wide coffee tables :)

yup :S
there's a whole page on those lol

I never mounted equipment on those, but I have a trio of those tables since I moved houses

They started at 5 beers (10 EUR) price, then halved in price.
So I got them as temp solutions

I was looking at ikea for the kitchen, and possibly those!
I literally have no idea what I need ._.

3:48 PM
oh, your linked tb video also mentions the same mellanox X2's
including the USD $35 which I paid for a pair of them

My AE ones were ~100ish sgd each
but I plan on using ethernet and transievers are pricy
new apartment has the cables, might as well use em

For now I just use dual NICs.
One with direct connnected copper to the NAS.
One 2.5 regular port on a Gbit port
Work, but coule be better.

And I would like to remove the SPF+ NIC to add an extra SSD

That's one reason I shoulda gotten the newer cards :D

3:54 PM
also, less complex network for the win.
I have not done seriouis network stuff since 2013

oh god
my home network is a mess... 2-3 switches :D
new place will be I think 2?
(6 ports, tho 2 are in the bedroom)

For me it is Fribre coming unto house -> 'fivre to ethernet' (which turned out to be a full fledged wire less routes ) -> Wireless access point/router

ugh, I want to avoid that

I was told I would be getting fibre to Ethernet. Not that I would get a full AP

current place is fibre - ONR -> splits to 3 one end's the other apartment with an AP and TV, one AP and TV on the second one, and my stuff on the third ...

3:56 PM
With (now physically removed) wireless antenna's

each has a switch or router

Ah, no TV's here

I do want to replace the APS for better ones.

Not since I moved houses (15 ish years ago)

yeah
I'd probably want a TV for a big screen
also if I go, I can probaly swap the switches + APs for 'simple' routers as APs
since I only have switches there for that
+ my current Aps are chinese mesh routers with the management app accidentally broken so I can't manage or update them
new place should be simple
its 45sqm and one bedroom

4:14 PM
I have no idwa big my home it. But I only use the kitchen to cook in, the living room only when I have guest etc. So I basically live in the same room as all my equipment

lol Its a nw build so they said how big it is when I bought it
Its not finished yet tho, covoid delays :/

MiG
4:50 PM
@Hennes you're not planning to actually run those are you? The noise coming from those is horrible :x
I've built all my home stuff for silence, and even then I moved the big server to the storage room

@MiG Its white noise :D

No, R300 #1 was my main server at uni, the other two were bought as spare parts and test server

MiG
sounds like a damned jet engine -_-

(actually one of the reasons I'm not looking at rackmount gear ._.)
Even if I have an essentially soundproof place to put them

MiG
when we were running the dorm server room we got a full sized 19" rack (2m tall or something?) and filled it up... for home use now I can do with far less :P

4:52 PM
lol
@MiG I was looking at a 6U one in a moment of weakness

MiG
yeah, those days are definitely behind me :P

(I'm probably looking at a new 'router', and consolidating the 2/3 other machines and my old NAS to 1 or 2 boxen)

MiG
building my stuff according to usage these days... everything I want to run 24/7 can be done off of a Raspberry Pi... if I need more power or access to the giant storage array, I send a WOL ping

@MiG makes sense if you can get second hand/old stuff...

MiG
the electricity usage kinda went through the roof, so my current equipment is based on those principles

4:54 PM
@MiG oh... I run a windows box to remote into, a linux box for downloads
Both 3rd gen ryzen

MiG
all the server stuff is linux, desktops are windows

If I switch jobs I probably won't need the remote/jump box ;)
Probably dumping my 3rd gen intel - its too noisy, and I am not sure why

MiG
I'd keep it tbh, I use a similar setup (but on linux) to access my home stuff securely from anywhere on the planet
and it won't need much computing power, so doesn't have to be something that draws a lot of electricity

@MiG Could be a VM :D
all it runs is a web browser and 2 chat clients

MiG
@JourneymanGeek aaand we're back to humongous power usage

4:56 PM
the other box mainly runs a torrent client

MiG
yeah, but I assume you don't run the VM off of a postage stamp?

I could consolidate those to 1 box
@MiG NUC class machines
MAYBE a i5 or i7 SFF box

MiG
@JourneymanGeek not familiar with those

so ~15-30w

MiG
that's pretty good

4:57 PM
@MiG basically a step up from a rpi
an x86
also run one box as a router

MiG
no individual electricity bills at my dorm, was quite a shocker when I moved house after graduating :D
ah alright :)

and I have a one disk 3tb nas

MiG
gonna go Raspberry Pi 4B, need to bring gf's apt up to spec :d

so consolidation makes sense ;)

MiG
yeah... couldn't do that in my case

4:59 PM
for now, I think I caould move 'tommorrow' and not buy any new computer gear :D

MiG
my NAS is a 12 disk 100TB one

@MiG yeaah, I mean, if I could afford it sure
I'd want 16-20 tb, wth some NVMe for extra zooooom
but that's about 6-8 months of budgeting and planning
and I'm checks 6.4 months from being able to afford my apartment with no issues :D
maybe less if i got a raise or a loan :D

5:26 PM
@JourneymanGeek lol @ "zooooom"

MiG
5:55 PM
@JourneymanGeek I admittedly went a bit overboard, but I wanted ample storage and reliability... went the ZFS route :)
just realised, my profile pic is actually said server :D
the idea btw is that that thing spends the majority of its time offline, it's a huge power hog
I keep local caches of things I'm working with and/or watching, every once in a while I turn it on and exchange stuff, then power it down again
gonna add an 1-2TB SSD to said Raspberry Pi, that'll be the proverbial pilot light

There is absolutely no excuse for me to be wasting time doing meaningless things when I could be working on the same sorts of projects, learning JavaScript/PowerShell/Docker/LXD/ZFS/whatever while simultaneously meeting all of my personal and professional obligations.
Let's go!

1 hour later…
MiG
8:09 PM
yeah, that's getting difficult these days

@MiG I shudder to think
I have a raid6 dealie with 12ish drives? and my power bill is, um... not fun

MiG
8:30 PM
yep, same
so I only power it up once a month or so
went from RAID to ZFS btw, because rebuilding got to dangerously long times
basically the chance of a second drive failing during rebuild time became realistic, few reliable manufacturers left so the drives tend to be similar in brand, type and batch
gotta say the effort was quite doable, FreeNAS and ZFS are relatively straightforward, and the case I got was a dream to assemble the server in
