Remember when this room was active and we even had our own bot?

@vbnm Well - yes :D

I miss those days

So cool when someone bashes something together to win an internet arguement :D

5 hours later…
10:46 AM
I bet that started with '...but someone on the Internet is WRONG!'
:)

11:03 AM
@Hennes I would not take that bet :D

But... :)

> They are decent render cards for adobe and blender ad well as folding at home even without the registry hack
interesting
if I had the spare readies I'd consider it

2:29 PM
They should rename the USB standard to Oops-B. Much more accurate. :)

3:27 PM
I am still waiting for oops-B version 4
With proper PC-E chain though :)

anybody heard of sim cards in routers?
I just noticed this question https://superuser.com/questions/1649700/using-a-foreign-sim-card-in-us-in-a-router Why would anybody do it?!?!

@barlop two reasons... three actually...

At home or work, it's better to use WLAN than mobile data. And at internet cafes or banks or places with routers then people use WiFi(WLAN).
Who is putting a sim card in a router and why?!

Backup, mobile use and there's no fixed line in the area
Did you see the router?

5G can be faster than landline internet in some places

4:44 PM
I think some home routers can use USB modems also
(slightly different to "putting a SIM into a router" but not entirely dissimilar idea)

Actually, I've been toying with having a second sim for my unlimited line as a backup for future place (tm)

@JourneymanGeek re did I see the router.. no my curiosity was just caused by seeing that question!

if there was a PAYG plan that didn't have expiring credit I'd consider it for OOB access

@barlop lets say you have a critical monitoring system
and there's ah...
uh... escavator incident

yeah I can see it useful as a backup

4:46 PM
and your lines are cut.

I used to have broadband and dialup back in the day and used dialup as a backup, though even then it wasn't instant. Still having broadband go and no other option is a big problem. A SIM card is absolutely a huge life safer.. I see that
I've had an instance where my internet went during a competitive chess game... I was pissed(uk for angry!) . I was winning and my time ran out due to my internet being down so I lost.
That said.. I could have set up a mobile hotspot.. though the app wasn't working for some reason.. some update.

ouch
sounds frustrating

@barlop and that's essentially your answer

Are there routers that can connect to a mobile hotspot as a backup system?

hmm
Not as far as I know
Its usually a USB connection or an onboard sim card slot

5:30 PM
It'd be cool and I'd love to do it (my mobile provider gives unlimited data, although it slows down after 25GB), but they also block a lot of the ports I would rely on for mobile use
