@Michael As a rule of thumb, you can't run a mail server on a residential IP address. Well, you can probably receive, but anything you send will be rejected as spam.

"running your own email" is best done by running your own domain against a paid mail host (O365, Google for Business, etc.).

Difference there is if the mail host dies for whatever reason, you can simply route your domain to a different one

And a domain is a lot harder to lose, as long as you keep up the payments

I got backups in my parents safe, and on two sets of drives (onw with 2019 backup, one with 2020 backup) and I am about to reconnect my NAS.

I use Backblaze, not for the backup service, but for cloud storage (B2). I've keep my photo archives there and it's saved my butt several times after unrecoverable FS corruption on an external hard drive (unreliable USB bridge).

Yeah. I used to have eSATA enclosures and laptops that supported them.

Then I lost eSATA and had to use USB. USB-2 is juyst to slow. USB-3 also also slow and has random disconnect with everything on just ebout every system

I tried USB3 to eSTA. Which failed to work. (connect one in 10 times)

I tried using a home build NAS (hence that Z170 motherboard, with a slow CPU but with thunrderbolt which I might have used as 10Gbit direct connection)

And eventually moved to a real NAS and some fast network cards (10Gbit SPF+, Melanox X2)

@Hennes USB controllers can be extremely picky about EMI. My newest laptop (ThinkPad T14) is better behaved, but it's my understanding that the USB spec mandates connection resets in the event of persistent errors, including due to EMI or alien crosstalk.

USb just has been hit and miss for me. Noidea if copying toa pendrive or HDD will have any consisytent speed (from 200MB/sec for minutes, then suddentlky down to 3KB/sec)

While the same drive on eSATA was consistent in it speed

aka fast for sequential data sunch as movies, slower for 3k text files (mud rooms)

That's more of an issue with the drive itself. Some flash drives have crappy garbage collection and will literally drop to 0 IOPS as they erase flash memory blocks for reuse.

If you want consistent performance, get a portable SSD.

USB reliability is very dependent on the controller chips. Some chips are just very sensitive to EMI and will barf at the slightest sign of EMI. Others will cope remarkably well. Good cables can help immensely, too.

@Hennes Backblaze is the cheapest for 'unlimited' storage but it only works with drives attached to your computer, and you have no control over the encryption (They claim end-to-end but to get your data back ... you send them the encryption key. Which is stupid on so many levels.) Scaleway C14/Glacier is what I use for archives.

There was an FreeBSd based serivice (or at last was 1-2 years ago) which gave you an app. You generated the key (and was told to backup that elsehere) and you backupped encrypted data

But I think there needs to be something in the USB spec that requires some higher degree of error tolerance and recovery that doesn't resetting the entire connection.

Only my photos and certain other mediat. get the offsite/cloud treatment. System backups are considered too volatile and too large to get offsite backups, though there's almost always at least one (and usually two) additional copies of data. Portable SSDs are used to speed up backups.

I haven't looked in a while. The last time I've done any serious work inside the machine was when I replaced the graphics card (RTX 3090, pulling out a GTX 1080 Ti).
