@Michael As a rule of thumb, you can't run a mail server on a residential IP address. Well, you can probably receive, but anything you send will be rejected as spam.
"running your own email" is best done by running your own domain against a paid mail host (O365, Google for Business, etc.).
Difference there is if the mail host dies for whatever reason, you can simply route your domain to a different one
And a domain is a lot harder to lose, as long as you keep up the payments

7 hours later…
7:50 AM
Switched to Bitwarden. Seems good but lacks built-in browser.
Maybe I could have stayed with Lastpass for $30 a year... I don't know. They are too popular I think and it makes them craved target of hackers. Also LogMeIn has dodgy reputation.
2,400 USD for 3080 here... Some dealers are audacious enough to ask almost double of that.
Actually no, that's for 3090 almost double of that is what I meant.

8:18 AM
@Boris_yo now is probably the worst time to buy a GPU

4 hours later…
12:00 PM
@Boris_yo You can pop out the extension thing into its own window, if that's what you're looking for?
it also has a web interface to manage saved logins/cards/etc

@bertiebHi, did you find anything reliable on posting? If not I can put it up for a wider audience.
But my current system is almost fine now. I just need USB-C on the front end. For which I got a PCI-e plugin card which is in the back of the system. Well short of the cable lenght to the front USB-C plug
Re safe backps.
Anyone know of a good afforable service?
I got backups in my parents safe, and on two sets of drives (onw with 2019 backup, one with 2020 backup) and I am about to reconnect my NAS.
Thought e last used to be the online backup. But with the new desktop no longer having spinning rust I will need to use it for storage.
SSd's are getting cheaper but I am still maxed out at 3x 2TB

12:21 PM
I use Backblaze, not for the backup service, but for cloud storage (B2). I've keep my photo archives there and it's saved my butt several times after unrecoverable FS corruption on an external hard drive (unreliable USB bridge).

Aye. USB is deep SH8T

@Boris_yo Well, I paid $1,840 (plus tax) for an RTX 3090. GPUs are still in extremely short supply due to inadequate supply, cryptocurrency mining demand, and scalping (the latter being encouraged by COVID-19 layoffs).

I used to use eSATA for backups.
Connect dock. Insert year backup drive or monthly update drive (2 districnt one in case it died)

Yeah. I used to have eSATA enclosures and laptops that supported them.

Then I lost eSATA and had to use USB. USB-2 is juyst to slow. USB-3 also also slow and has random disconnect with everything on just ebout every system
I tried USB3 to eSTA. Which failed to work. (connect one in 10 times)
I tried using a home build NAS (hence that Z170 motherboard, with a slow CPU but with thunrderbolt which I might have used as 10Gbit direct connection)
And eventually moved to a real NAS and some fast network cards (10Gbit SPF+, Melanox X2)
PCIe-e v2 x8.. feels ancient

12:27 PM
@Hennes USB controllers can be extremely picky about EMI. My newest laptop (ThinkPad T14) is better behaved, but it's my understanding that the USB spec mandates connection resets in the event of persistent errors, including due to EMI or alien crosstalk.

But works. Even in a x4 slot
USb just has been hit and miss for me. Noidea if copying toa pendrive or HDD will have any consisytent speed (from 200MB/sec for minutes, then suddentlky down to 3KB/sec)
While the same drive on eSATA was consistent in it speed
aka fast for sequential data sunch as movies, slower for 3k text files (mud rooms)

That's more of an issue with the drive itself. Some flash drives have crappy garbage collection and will literally drop to 0 IOPS as they erase flash memory blocks for reuse.
If you want consistent performance, get a portable SSD.
Where do you live, @Hennes? I want to make sure I'm not going into Shabbat...

Netherlands

Ah.

And Bartrieb was in Scotland. Across a channel and outside EU
Which is rather touch and go atm

12:32 PM
Okay, so we have a few hours left.
USB reliability is very dependent on the controller chips. Some chips are just very sensitive to EMI and will barf at the slightest sign of EMI. Others will cope remarkably well. Good cables can help immensely, too.

Bob
@Hennes Backblaze is the cheapest for 'unlimited' storage but it only works with drives attached to your computer, and you have no control over the encryption (They claim end-to-end but to get your data back ... you send them the encryption key. Which is stupid on so many levels.) Scaleway C14/Glacier is what I use for archives.

There was an FreeBSd based serivice (or at last was 1-2 years ago) which gave you an app. You generated the key (and was told to backup that elsehere) and you backupped encrypted data
Nice and clean
And affordable for real data\

But I think there needs to be something in the USB spec that requires some higher degree of error tolerance and recovery that doesn't resetting the entire connection.

But if I would wish to backup my (cough: legal) movies and musci collection that woukd get expendsive

lol

12:42 PM
Thus far the buy a new HDD every 2 years) has worked.
backup to that.
Which also means I have multiple 2TB HDDs, and 3x ununsed dell R300's
(1U quad core2 servers)... With up to 2TB per drive via their SAS controller
Old NAS setup was wake up the server via DRAC, backup, Shutdown server
Which is fun, but not very flexible.
I guess I should add 3x Dell R300 to the list of (heacy weight) items offered.
No sane person would use them.
not unless you want a personal lab, and use physical domain controllers
Which would be fun if I had surplus time, but so would be dozens of other things
I got a decent job for the last 5 years, so I now can offard decent hardware.
Well, other then frivilouus GPU upgrades. Damn those are expensive today
Fun detail, my 1080 now uses 1 out of 6 PCI-e power plug on the PSU.

Bob
@Hennes That's the illusion Backblaze gives you. But when it comes time to restore, you have to give them the key.
But yea I find C14 the cheapest per TB

I do not want to think I just want to dump 6-7TB (aka everything) to an on-line place

Bob
€2/TB-month on C14
I just rclone my backups up via their S3 API

7x2 = 14Euro mont,
12x14 150ish euro. I can ge my own drive of that size and store it
Cheaper if you get the drive in an USB case

@Hennes There's a shipping comparison website which seems to think it would be around £20-30 with the estimates of size/weight I used as I couldn't remember the actual dimensions/weight

Bob
12:53 PM
Ya, I only keep local copies of my bulk unimportant data

About 1.5kg
Heavy motherboard.

Bob
I only put ~150 GB backups on C14

the 7 layers and or thick copper plate backed ones do indeed weight more

Oh yeah

I've got about 600 GB in B2.

12:54 PM
that actually doesn't change the estimate

Bob
I think I'm at 3 copies on there

I try to keep two distinct copies. Which means one off site. And one on site

@Hennes RTX 3090 taking up 2 of 8. Another 2 are in use for EPS12V processor power, and one more for extra motherboard power (ASUS EZ Plug).

4x power for motherboard (3 needed, but according reports it should owrk with just 2 unless doing heavy overclocking. Which I am not)

then 6x PCI-e for graphics. But it seems my 1080 is 1x 8 pins (while my older GTX960 used 2 connectors)
and 6x SATA/Molex connectors. 1x used for the fan controller
I tend to go overboard with PSU and keep resuing them for a decade
In this case a titanmax 800Watt titanium+\

Only my photos and certain other mediat. get the offsite/cloud treatment. System backups are considered too volatile and too large to get offsite backups, though there's almost always at least one (and usually two) additional copies of data. Portable SSDs are used to speed up backups.
@Hennes Seasonic Prime Titanium 850W.

1:02 PM
I had a 450W coolermaster (for the 1080, AND Z170 AND I6600k)
A 550w for the self build NAS (duial core pentium, but abot 10x rotating rust)
and now the 800W for the new build.

Upside, fanless until 55% power is aked of it. Which means 100% fanless for me
Be quiet dark rock 4 pro cooler.
Be quiet 802 case.

it *is* less noise then before :)\

Case fans all run off the motherboard; the liquid cooler runs off SATA power (which uses separate connectors on the power supply).
Hmm. So it turns out Molex isn't in the same group with the PCIe power connectors on the power supply.

I never considered liqued cooling. But seeing people assmble the 802 case with matching cooler really makes me wonder how well they worka nd if they are silent
Aye same here.
Multiple rails
thogh all PCI-e GPU conneectors are on the same rail (which is not always the case)

Which means 4 of 8 PCIe power is in use, and 4 or 5 (don't recall) of the 6 peripheral power connectors are populated.
Seasonic Prime is single-rail.

Yeah, the cheaper ones often are not

I haven't looked in a while. The last time I've done any serious work inside the machine was when I replaced the graphics card (RTX 3090, pulling out a GTX 1080 Ti).
Replaced the RTC battery while I was at it because it's hard to get to without removing the graphics card.
(the system is more than three years old and still going strong)

1:10 PM
Mine was about 5 years old. But I tend to repalce whole sysem less and less
Which is one reason to go AMD. There often is a CPU upgrade path for the same motherboard

Processor was upgraded from a Ryzen 7 1800X to a Ryzen 9 3950X over a year ago.
Sadly, no further upgrades, but I'm very happy.
(X370 motherboard; ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Extreme, the only EATX board of its kind)
32 GB (2x16 GB) RAM, DDR4-3200.
2.5TB of storage, all flash.

1:43 PM
I was intel Pentium 100, AMD K6-200, amd K6-300, dual celeron-366, dual celeron 466, AMD 2200+, AMD x3800, quad core2 (R300), i7-920 on X55 chipset (still have that if anyone wants it), pentium 3300 on Z170X (discussed item), I5-6600k om another z!70X, and now B550 with amd 5800x
the dual celeron era was fun. Fun supported unless you modified your CPUs
Drill a hole here, cutting a mid board wire. Add a resister here, ...

1 hour later…
2:52 PM
@Bob Great advice, thanks.

@Hennes AIO is... pretty straightforward

3:22 PM
Anyone interested in a steam key for
at ik dubbel heb is:
- Ticket to ride
- Terraforming Mars
- Pandemic: The Board Game
?
I got al of those from humble indy budle, but alreasy had them
s/dubbel (dutch)/dubble (engrish)

3:57 PM
Hi.

2 hours later…
5:54 PM
@Burgi :-O

6:07 PM
@Hennes But those are board games?

6:32 PM
you can simulate board games on computers
i got the ticket to ride one free on the epic store ages ago

6:54 PM
Well, yeah, but someone still has to program it?

1 hour later…
