Google discontinues services pretty frequently and seemingly arbitrarily (boo), but they're usually good at giving people sufficient time to get their data out

home hosting costs aren't high*, but aren't as convenient as fancy-shmasy cloud providers

*note: have independent backups, ideally at least one offsite

@PaulVargas So - my take is, you can't trust google for long term stuff. Services die, or plans get changed all the time

they're going to have significantly better availability where something is supported

simply cause if one of their servers dies, you don't notice

if ALL of their servers die, everyone does

Always have at least two copied, more if it's truly irreplaceable and you expect it to last a long time.

For critical pics you want to see again in 20+ years? I'd want 5 copies in different places (hard drives you stash in friend/family's homes, 1-2 cloud copies, a couple local...).

And with that length of time you'd want to maintain them at least every 3-5 years, i.e. make sure they're all still readable, maybe rewrite all the data, maybe even replace the physical media in the case of hard drives.

You should also go with parity archives and/or resiliant filesystems to detect bitrot.

Over a long enough period of time, that's an actual concern.

As far as cloud services, you could use a couple of the specialised archival ones that tend to be cheaper per unit of time, e.g. Amazon Glacier, Backblaze B2 (or normal Backblaze if you have a copy always attached to a running PC...), Scaleway C14, etc..

The problem with relying on a service like Google isn't so much the risk of them disappearing (though that does happen), but rather issues like:

* You accidentally delete the data. Poof. Gone.
* You forget some payments. Poof. Gone.
* You violate some ToS and they delete your account. Poof. Gone.
* They mistakenly *think* you violated some ToS and they delete your account. Poof. Gone.

It's near-immune to physical hardware failure, given their scale, but it's still a single point of failure on the software and administrative sides.

@Michael actually the big stopper for me is account management

flurdy.com/docs/postfix is a great guide other than needing to figure out how to share the certs from my web container (or other means to do certs), and needing to do raw sql for account management (which is doable but ugly)

Q: Android Phone crashes when viewing settings

Android phone, launch the Phone app, then 3 dots > Settings and every time the app crashes with the message Phone has stopped. How do I go about diagnosing why this is happening?
