@PaulVargas Whereas I store more than photos on my home servers, so it's simply an added benefit for me. According to that table, I'm saving $100/mo by hosting it at home on my own. Total upfront cost was around $600

@PaulVargas Are you optimising for cost, convenience, reliability, or something else?
Google discontinues services pretty frequently and seemingly arbitrarily (boo), but they're usually good at giving people sufficient time to get their data out
home hosting costs aren't high*, but aren't as convenient as fancy-shmasy cloud providers
*note: have independent backups, ideally at least one offsite

**note: "cloud" means "someone else's Internet-accessible computer

Serverless is 'someone elses server'
@PaulVargas So - my take is, you can't trust google for long term stuff. Services die, or plans get changed all the time
they're going to have significantly better availability where something is supported
simply cause if one of their servers dies, you don't notice
if ALL of their servers die, everyone does

@PaulVargas The best place to store your data is multiple places
Always have at least two copied, more if it's truly irreplaceable and you expect it to last a long time.
For critical pics you want to see again in 20+ years? I'd want 5 copies in different places (hard drives you stash in friend/family's homes, 1-2 cloud copies, a couple local...).
And with that length of time you'd want to maintain them at least every 3-5 years, i.e. make sure they're all still readable, maybe rewrite all the data, maybe even replace the physical media in the case of hard drives.
You should also go with parity archives and/or resiliant filesystems to detect bitrot.
Over a long enough period of time, that's an actual concern.
As far as cloud services, you could use a couple of the specialised archival ones that tend to be cheaper per unit of time, e.g. Amazon Glacier, Backblaze B2 (or normal Backblaze if you have a copy always attached to a running PC...), Scaleway C14, etc..
The problem with relying on a service like Google isn't so much the risk of them disappearing (though that does happen), but rather issues like:

* You accidentally delete the data. Poof. Gone.
* You forget some payments. Poof. Gone.
* You violate some ToS and they delete your account. Poof. Gone.
* They mistakenly *think* you violated some ToS and they delete your account. Poof. Gone.
It's near-immune to physical hardware failure, given their scale, but it's still a single point of failure on the software and administrative sides.

@Bob then there's the terraria guy...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...terraria guy?

Bob
Ahhh
Yea Google/YT does that. A lot

I can't imagine loosing access to my Gmail account. Every single online account I have is tied to that. O_O

2:33 PM
@Bob I do a complete download of all my Google account data once a month or so, and save it to an external hard drive.

@Michael that's kinda the problem

I'm not about to run my own mail server any time soon...

@bertieb I have an external hard drive, but it started making strange noises. I think its death is coming. :'(

4:47 PM
@Michael I've been thinking about it

I guess it wouldn't be that hard. You'd just need a domain and a static IP address from your ISP.

lol
and a bunch of things we need cause... spammers ruin everything

Oh yeah, that complicates things doesn't it.
Side note: Firefox finally improved their print preview.

@Michael actually the big stopper for me is account management
flurdy.com/docs/postfix is a great guide other than needing to figure out how to share the certs from my web container (or other means to do certs), and needing to do raw sql for account management (which is doable but ugly)

@JourneymanGeek damn
@PaulVargas I have a hard drive, which has no speaker/buzzer, which beeps
Geek can verify ;-P

4:56 PM
@Michael also this crowd is very much "run whatever makes sense yourself"
@bertieb that thing haunts my dreams still

@JourneymanGeek :D
I should make a better recording
get some proper sound equipment in there, film it on my MkII
give it the standard horror-film grey tinge

Q: Android Phone crashes when viewing settings

AlainDAndroid phone, launch the Phone app, then 3 dots > Settings and every time the app crashes with the message Phone has stopped. How do I go about diagnosing why this is happening?

Can anyone explain Alan's comment about if something is explicitly stated to be out of scope and how that can be slightly pompous?
which means "affectedly and irritatingly grand, solemn, or self-important."

I'd just leave it where it is

You get a Chrome-like dialog when you go to print now. No more ancient print dialog. You also get a Save as PDF option. Really great improvements.

what's changed?
I only rarely print from my laptop as the printer's in the loft, and it's always "print using system printer" dealie

9:19 PM
Used to look like this (ignore the foreground dialog)
New design is so much better imo

10:14 PM
Ohhhh
In Firefox
Cheers :)
