has anybody ever found moving a partition to be a bad idea?

Not if you fist make backups off everything
Not just the data on that partition

@barlop I have many times. It's scary until it says it has succeeded

7:34 PM
Back in the win98 era (so a long long time ago, with OS's far away). It mostly worked fine
Mostly I sued:
1. Fresh OS install. Oh, I need to change this but recofig is a lot of work -> repartition
2. Unbackupped data in disk. -> Nope, Nyet, nada

7:48 PM
@CanadianLuke but once it succeeded , no problems? how often did it fail for you?

8:12 PM
No problems that weren't solved by the partitioning. I did it in the Win98 days, XP days, and routinely in 7, 8.x, and 10 days. Plus, I do it constantly on Linux in VMs. No issues so far, but knock on wood... No power outages or stuff have happened during the process
It has not yet failed for me, ever
But knock on wood, or use a 4 leaf clover, or something... Just in case

I think about 1 in 10 failed for me
Mostly windows and windows FS invalid blahg errors

@Hennes what software did you use? and any idea what caused the failures?

8:28 PM
partition magic. Since it was licensed stuff for ADT/Tyco

wow.. I used PM.. great software, didn't have it fail.
though maybe I didn't move partitions on a bad hard drive
so got lucky there
maybe worth doing a read only chkdsk before moving it

Aye. Most of the failures started with 'bad NTFS
