Hi all,
Where does one learn about what (e.g. commercial) server softwares are available to do something?
I'm looking for backup / file serving software but didn't get any hits on software recommendations SE (softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/75989)
I'm interested generally how people discover server software. Word of mouth, presentations at conferences? Google?

That's quite a complex set of reqs
although it sounds like what you want is an authenticated web frontend for borg

have you thought about offering a bounty for the creation of such a thing?

That's what I was originally thinking, borg + file server, but ideally something wrapped up in a big safe package
The bounty for that very question had just expired heh

2 hours later…

I was thinking more of a "pay a dev to implement these few things" type of bounty ;-P
ie cash money

@AntiEarth Google, and that's two utterly seperate requirements, whihc would likely be met with two utterly seperate tools
'How do I fix two pipes together and hang a picture?"
Also depends what you mean by 'server'
if we're talking businesses there's usally architects who'll look into various products and decide what meets hte requirements
if you're talking some guy at home (like me) - google, and asking other people

@AntiEarth well, by "commercial server software" ? you say you mean backup/file serving software. Do you mean like dropbox re file serving? To find others, google for alternatives to that.
acronis does backup and does imaging, so if you want to find others like it, then look up alternatives to that.
really what you call server software is just regular software but that has been configred to listen.
As to how they discover things, I think probably companies.. one company usese it, an employee comes from one company to another. Or a company's IT department recommends it maybe the manager of the IT department found it somehow. Not sure how IT managers find different things.
though nowadays many companies might subcontract and have no or small IT departments. But still anybody that has worked in a company sees particular things used.
